Distributed Bragg reflector porous silicon of different characteristics were formed to determine their optical constants in the visible wavelength range using a periodic square wave current between low and high current densities. The surface and cross-sectional SEM images of distributed Bragg reflector porous silicon were obtained using a cold field emission scanning electron microscope. The surface image of distributed Bragg reflector porous silicon indicates that the distributions of pores are even. The cross-sectional image illustrates that the multilayer of distributed Bragg reflector porous silicon exhibits a depth of few microns and applying of square current density during the etching process results two distinct refractive indices in the contrast. Distributed Bragg reflector porous silicon exhibited a porosity depth profile that related directly to the current-time profile used in etch. Its free-standing film was obtained by applying an electro-polishing current.
We investigated the atomic and electronic properties of graphene grown by Pd silicidation and intercalation using LEED, STM, and ARPES. Pd was deposited on the 6H-SiC(0001) surface at RT. The formation of Pd silicide gives rise to breaking of Si-C bonds of the SiC crystal, which enables to release C atoms at low temperature. The C atoms are transformed into graphene from $860^{\circ}C$ according to the LEED patterns as a function of annealing temperature. Even though the graphene spots were observed in the LEED pattern and the Fourier transformed STM images after annealing at $870^{\circ}C$, the topography images showed various superstructures so that graphene is covered with Pd silicide residue. After annealing at $950^{\circ}C$, monolayer graphene was revealed at the surface. The growth of graphene is not limited by surface obstacles such as steps and defects. In addition, we observed that six protrusions consisting of the honeycomb network of graphene has same intensity meaning non-broken AB-symmetry of graphene. The ARPES results in the vicinity of K point showed the non-doped linear ${\pi}$ band structure indicating monolayer graphene decoupled from the SiC substrate electronically. Note that the charge neutrality of graphene grown by Pd silicidation and intercalation was sustained regardless of annealing temperature in contrast with quasi-free- standing graphene induced by H and Au intercalation. Further annealing above $1,000^{\circ}C$ accelerates sublimation of the Pd silicide layer underneath graphene. This results in appearance of the $(6r3x6r3)R30^{\circ}$ structure and dissolution of the ${\pi}$ bands for quasi-free-standing graphene.
In this paper, we have studied the effect of mechanical polishing to Ga-polar face for reducing the wafer bowing and strain in free-standing GaN. After the mechanical polishing to Ga-polar face, the bowing of the free-standing GaN substrate significantly decreased with increasing the size of diamond slurry, and eventually changed the bowing direction from concave to convex. Furthermore, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD) were decreased, especially the FWHM of (1 0 2) reflection for $1.0{\mu}m$ size of diamond slurry was significantly decreased from 630 to 203 arcsec. In the case, we confirmed that the compressive strain in Ga-polar face was fully released by Raman measurement.

This is an experimental study to investigate the behaviour of piled raft system in different types of sandy soil. A small scale "prototype" model was tested in a sand box with load applied to the foundation through a compression jack and measured by means of load cell. The settlement was measured at the raft by means of dial gauges, three strain gauges were attached on piles to measure the strains and calculate the load carried by each pile in the group. Nine configurations of group ($1{\times}2$, $1{\times}3$, $1{\times}4$, $2{\times}2$, $2{\times}3$, $2{\times}4$, $3{\times}3$, $3{\times}4$ and $4{\times}4$) were tested in the laboratory as a free standing pile group (the raft not in contact with the soil) and as a piled raft (the raft in contact with the soil), in addition to tests for raft (unpiled) with different sizes. It is found that when the number of piles within the group is small (less than 4), there is no evident contribution of the raft to the load carrying capacity. The failure load for a piled raft consisting of 9 piles is approximately 100% greater than free standing pile group containing the same number of piles. This difference increases to about 4 times for 16 pile group. The piles work as settlement reducers effectively when the number of piles is greater than 6 than when the number of piles is less than 6. The settlement can be increased by about 8 times in ($1{\times}2$) free standing pile group compared to the piled raft of the same size. The effect of piled raft in reducing the settlement vanishes when the number of piles exceeds 6.
An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a free-standing frame equipped with a movable base system using cast iron and mortar as the bearing materials. The preliminary friction test indicated that a graphite layer developed on the interface and exhibited stable friction behavior. The friction coefficient ranged from 0.33 to 0.36 when the applied normal compression stress ranged from 2.6 to 5.2 MPa. The effect of the variation of normal compression stress would be small. Shaking table tests on the free-standing frame showed that rock, slide, and rock-slide responses occurred. The cumulative slide distance reached 381 mm under JMA Kobe wave excitation; however, only a few cyclic slides occurred at the same locations along the moving track. Most surfaces sustained single slides. Similar results can be observed in other shaking conditions. The insufficient cyclic sliding and significant rocking resulted in a few graphite layers on the mortar surfaces. Friction coefficients were generally similar to those obtained in the preliminary friction tests; however, the values fluctuated when the rocking became significant. The collisions due to rocking caused strong horizontal acceleration responses and resulted in high friction coefficient. In addition, the strong horizontal acceleration responses caused by the collisions made the freestanding specimen unable to reduce the input horizontal acceleration notably, even when slippage occurred. Compared with the counterpart fixed-base specimen, the specimen equipped with the iron-mortar base could reduce the horizontal acceleration amplification response and the structural deformation, whereas the vertical acceleration response was doubled due to collisions from rocking.
As the old saying 'nothing is complete unless you put it in final shape', although nanosheets (NSs) are a promising functional building block for various electrochemical applications, their true value cannot be realized until they are well woven into electrical conducting materials. As an effort to determine their ideal shape, in this study, a unique manufacturing route to build a layer-by-layer (LBL) structure of two-dimensionally ordered, free-standing ${\beta}$-nickel hydroxide nanosheets (${\beta}$-NHNSs) that are fully electrically addressed with single-wall carbon nanotube fabrics was demonstrated, and its capabilities were verified through a comparative study on the differences between a simple bulky and LBL-structured electrochemical cathode, representing two extreme cases. The LBL-structured cathode showed a discharging current peak that was 25 times larger than the bulky structured one measured in cyclic voltammetry, which implies that the LBL structure is near an ideal electrode configuration for NS-based electrochemical applications.
