Faults in rock mass have strong influences on the behaviors of rock structure such as rock slope, tunnel and underground space. Thus, it is very important to analyse for the characteristics of fault rocks in design for tunnel. But, due to the limitation of geotechnical investigation in design stages, tunnel engineers have to carry out the face mapping and additional geological survey during tunnel excavation to find the distribution of faults and the engineering properties of faults for support and reinforcement design of tunnel. In this study, various geological survey and field tests were carried out to analyse the characteristics of the large thrust fault zone through the large sectional tunnel is constructed in mica-schist region. Also, the distribution of structural geology, the shape of thrust faults and the mechanical properties of fault rock were studied for the reasonable design of the reinforcement and support method for the highly fractured fault zone in the large-span tunnel.
With the exploitation of natural resources in China, underground resource extraction and underground space development, as well as other engineering activities are increasing, resulting in the creation of many defective rocks. In this paper, uniaxial compression tests were performed on rocks with double holes and fractures at different angles using particle flow code (PFC2D) numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. The failure behavior and mechanical properties of rock samples with holes and fractures at different angles were analyzed. The failure modes of rock with defects at different angles were identified. The fracture propagation and stress evolution characteristics of rock with fractures at different angles were determined. The results reveal that compared to intact rocks, the peak stress, elastic modulus, peak strain, initiation stress, and damage stress of fractured rocks with different fracture angles around holes are lower. As the fracture angle increases, the gap in mechanical properties between the defective rock and the intact rock gradually decreased. In the force chain diagram, the compressive stress concentration range of the combined defect of cracks and holes starts to decrease, and the model is gradually destroyed as the tensile stress range gradually increases. When the peak stress is reached, the acoustic emission energy is highest and the rock undergoes brittle damage. Through a comparative study using laboratory tests, the results of laboratory real rocks and numerical simulation experiments were verified and the macroscopic failure characteristics of the real and simulated rocks were determined to be similar. This study can help us correctly understand the mechanical properties of rocks with defects and provide theoretical guidance for practical rock engineering.

In order to delineate the flow system of fractured hard rock aquifer, numerical experiments are conducted and the results are analyzed with Mote Carlo simulation. The results show that the percolation threshold and the effective conductivity of a fracture network can be estimated with power law exponent (a) and fracture intensity. But the dependability of the estimated value relies on the percolation threshold, the system scale, and the characterization level.

The construction road and addition work are increasing now. Therefore, slope stability is important in construction slope on the fault and fractured zone. Rock bolt method, soil nailing method and anchor method are applied to reinforcement method of slope. This paper is the study for construction management on reinforcement method of slope.
Alpha center theory which was first proposed by Stefanescu has been proved to be effective for the detection of the location of the conductive orebody. A numerical forward modeling was conducted to verify the effectiveness of this method. Field works were carried out along the three profiles in two different areas for the purpose of finding fractured zone which might be accompanied with the presence of the groundwater. And the results were modeled by alpha center method, which was later testified by wellproven 2-dimensional finite difference inversion scheme. Field data could be successfully modeled with this alpha center algorithm, especially for the smooth-varying resistivity models. For the abrupt change of the resistivity values, the alpha center coefficients have a tendency to be negative to simulate the steep resistivity gradients. This method is quite simple and easy for the future applications. The numerical calculation can be performed very quickly with the personal computers.
This paper describes an effective utilization method of well logging data and boring cores for understanding the geology of Keoje-do area. Six holes were drilled in 1988-1989, and all rock cores were recovered. Nevertheless, seven kinds of logs were carried out in each borehole. The geologic situations of the drilling sites are accurately evaluated from a comparison between core descriptions and well logging data. Porosities and clay contents of sedimentary rocks can be calculated using the data of density and gamma-ray logs. Fractured zones are easily detected from the change in inside diameter of borehole by caliper log. Sonic, density and gamma-ray logging data clearly indicate alternated and dyke zones; the former can be detceted from an acoustic wave attenuation and a decline of compaction by sonic and density logs, the latter can be detected from the amount of potassium contents of bed rock and dyke by gamma-ray log.

The geological research as a part of HLW disposal program in Korea is carried out to provide necessary data for the establishment of the reference repository system in term of design and safety assessment in the crystalline rock terrains. Six deep boreholes were drilled to obtain hydrogeological and hydrochemical data from Jurassic granites in the Yuseong area, Korea. The core observation, televiewer logging and hydraulic testing were carried out during and after drilling and multi-packer system were installed in the boreholes of 500m depth for hydraulic and hydrochemical monitoring including environmental isotopes. The integration of hydrogeochemical and hydrodynamic data would be built greater confidence for the understanding of groundwater system in fractured rock mass. This geoscientific program could be possible to suggest a general guideline to develop the reference disposal concept of high-level radioactive waste in Korea.
Aperture is an important parameter for determining the hydraulic characteristics of fractured media. In this study the topography of artificial rock joint surface was measured using 3D laser profilometer to analyze the aperture distribution. The initial aperture distribution was determined when the contact area became one percent of total joint surface. The initial aperture distribution of granite joint, with the mean value of 0.78 mm and the standard deviation of 0.34 mm was much different from that of the marble joint, with the mean value of 0.57 mm and the standard deviation of 0.26 mm. Apertures of both granite and marble showed normal distributions. Aperture distribution with the contact area of 25% was also analyzed. Mean value was decreased to one third compared to the initial aperture, but the standard deviation was decreased slightly. To determine the spatial correlation of the aperture distribution variogram analysis was carried out on the initial aperture data. Most experimental variograms were fitted well with exponential model. It is expected that the measured aperture characteristics can be used for stochastic analysis of fluid flow through rock joints.
