  • It is known that the elastic modulus, maximum stress, and maximum strain of fiber-reinforced polymer composites are affected by high pressure. Fracture behavior is also known to be affected by high pressure. In this work, the pressure effect on the compressive fracture toughness of thick quasi-isotropic composites was investigated. Dog-bone type specimens of stacking sequence, [0$^{\circ}$/$\pm$45$^{\circ}$/90$^{\circ}$]$_{11s}$ were used. Compressive fracture tests were conducted under four pressure levels. The pressure levels applied were 0.1 MPa, 100 MPa, 200 MPa, and 300 MPa. Fracture toughness for each pressure level was determined from the compliance method. The results show that the compressive fracture toughness increases with increasing pressure. Specifically, fracture toughness increases 44% as the pressure increases from 0.1 MPa to 300 MPa.

  • Polymeric composites can be subjected to a wide variety of environmemtal conditions in practical use. One of most important conditions to be considered in the stuctural design using such materials is the miisture envirnment. Thus the moisture effect on interlaminar fracture toughness $G_IC$ and $G_IIC$ of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastic) composed of carbon fibers and epoxy resin is studied in this paper. Specimens were first processed in 25, 50, $80^{\circ}C$ flesh water and $25^{\circ}C$ sea water for various periods of time. After that, the water absorption and fracture toughness tests were performed under laboratory atmosphere. As result, the specimen processed in $80^{\circ}C$ flesh water indicates the highest misture absorbing capability, the second in $50^{\circ}C$ flesh water, the third in $25^{\circ}C$ sea water, and the specimen in $25^{\circ}C$ flesh water does the lowest. The interlaminar fracture toughness $G_IC$ increases, approaches to the maximum, and decreases as the immersion time increases. In case of interlaminar $G_IIC$, the value of the specimen processed in $80^{\circ}C$ flesh water turns out to be higher than others. In addition, the scanning electron micrographs(SEM) of fracture surfaces were also examined in order to explain the mechanism of fracture.

  • Unpredictable failures can occur due to the DHC (delayed hydride cracking) or the degradation of fracture toughness by hydride embrittlement in CANDU pressure tube which can result from the absorption of hydrogen or deuterium in the high temperature coolant. To investigate the hydride embrittlement of CANDU Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube, the transverse tensile test and the fracture toughness test were performed from room temperature to $300^{\circ}C$ using three different specimens which have an AR (As Received), 100, and 200 ppm hydrogen. As the amount of absorbed hydrogen was increased, the transverse yield strength and the ultimate tensile strength were also increased. In addition, as the test temperature became higher they were decreased linearly. While, at room temperature, the hydrogenbsorbed specimens represented the embrittlement which resulted in sudden decreasing of fracture toughness, the fracture characteristics became ductile such as AR specimen at high temperatures. Through the observation of fracture surface using SEM, it was found that the stress state of mixed mode could be related to the fissure which was believed to decrease the global fracture toughness.

  • The amount of VC and C/N ratio in Ti(CN) was varied to investigate the effect of VC addition on the mi-crostructural change in Ti(CN)-Ni system. As the amount of VC addition increases in Ti(C0.7N0.3)-20Ni sys-tem a complete solid solution was observed in Ti(C0.7N0.3)-20Ni-25VC system. It implies that the ratio of the dissolution rates of Ti(C0.7N0.3)to that of VC is nearly 2:1 at the sintering conditions used in this study. It was found from the experiments that the system composed of the Ti(C0.7N0.3) phase exhibits a rimless structure and relatively small amount of solid solution. That is among Ti(C0.7N0.3) phase exhibits a rimless structure and relatively small amount of solid solution. This is among Ti(C1-xNx) phases the dissolution rate of Ti(C0.3N0.7) is the lowest. Also fracture toughness(KIC) of the cermet was measured by indentation method. Attentions were paid to crack propagation path to look for a dominant fracture mode and to cor-relate it with fracture toughness values. The fracture toughness was relatively high with the addition of VC content. But the addition of a large VC content reduced the overall toughness of the cermet. This result is explained with the difference in fracture mode.

  • Elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{1c}$ can be used as an effective design criterion in elastic plastic fracture mechanics. Most of these systems are operated at high temperature and $J_{1c}$ values are affected by temperature. therefore, the $J_{1c}$ valuse at high temperature must be determined for use of integrity evaluation and designing of such systems. Elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{1c}$ tests were performed on SA516 carbon steel plate and test results were analyzed according to ASTM E 813-8, ASTM 1813-89. Safety and integrity are required for reactor pressure vessels vecause pthey are operated in high temperature. there are single specimen method, which used as evaluation of safety and integrity for reactor pressure vessels. In this study, elastic-plastic fracture toughness$(J_{1c})$ and $J-\Delta{a}$ of SA 516/70 steel used as reactor pressure vessel steel are measured and evaluated at room Temperature, $150^{\circ}C$, $250^{\circ}C$ and $370^{\circ}C$ according to unloading compliance method.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate fracture toughness and fatigue crack propagation behavior in the Reduced Activation Ferritic Steel (RAFs) JLF-I. The fracture toughness tests were performed with various size(plane size and thickness) and various side groove of specimens. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of the JLF-I steel was investigated by the constant-amplitude loading test for the stress ratios R=O.I, 0.3 and 0.5 respectively. The effects of stress ratios and specimen size on the fatigue crack growth behaviors for JLF-I steel were discussed within the Paris law. The test results showed the standard CT specimen with the side groove of 40 % represented a valid fracture toughness. The fracture resistance curve increased with increasing plane size and decreased with increasing thickness. However, the fracture resistance curve of half size specimen was similar to that of the standard specimen. The fatigue crack propagation rate of a half size specimen was similar to that of a full size specimen at the stress ratios of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 respectively. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of this material were evaluated by using a half size specimen.

  • Impact toughness and fracture behavior were studied in five kinds of non-heat treating steels containing bainite; standard(0.25C-1.5Mn-0.5Cr-0.2Mo-0.15V), high V(0.3V), Ni(0.5Mn-2Ni), W(0.4W instead of Mo), and high C-Ni(0.35C-0.5Mn-2Ni) steels. The good hardness and impact toughness balance was exhibited in the $1100^{\circ}C$-rolled condition, while the impact toughness was deteriorated due to coarse grained microstructure in the $1200^{\circ}C$-rolled condition. The impact toughness decreased with increasing the hardness in all steels studied. The fracture behavior was also basically identical, that is, the fracture area was divided into 3 zones; shear and fibrous zone, fracture transition zone with ductile dimples and cleavage cracks, where the cracks initiate and grow to critical size, unstable cleavage fracture propagation zone. The energy absorbed for the critical crack formation through the plastic deformation inside the plastic zone in front of the notch root contributed to a mostly significant portion of the total impact energy.

  • In this study, alumina matrix composites reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were fabricated by ultrasonic dispersion, ball milling, mixing, compaction, and sintering processes, and their relative density, electrical resistance, hardness, flexure strength, and fracture toughness were evaluated. 0~3 vol.% of CNTs were relatively homogeneously dispersed in the composites in spite of the existence of some pores. The three-point bending test results indicated that the flexure strength increased with increasing volume fraction of CNTs, and reached the maximum when the CNT fraction was 1.5 vol.%. The fracture toughness increased as the CNT fraction increased, and the fracture toughness of the composite containing 3 vol.% of CNTs was higher by 40% than that of the monolithic alumina. According to observation of the crack propagation path after the indentation fracture test, a new toughening mechanism of grain interface bridging-induced CNT bridging was suggested to explain the improvement of fracture toughness in the alumina matrix composites reinforced with CNTs.

  • From typical stress-axial strain curve and stress-volume strain curve of a concrete under uniaxial compression, the initiation and localization of microcracks within the interior of the specimen can be identified. The occurrence of random microcrack indicates the end of the linear elasticity, and the localization of microcrack implies formation of major crack, which triggers the onset of unstable crack propagation. The interval between initiation and localization of microcracks is characterized by a stable microcrack growth. Based on fracture behavior observed from a uniaxial compressive test of a concrete cylinder, a model has been developed to extract fundamental fracture properties of a concrete, i.e. the equivalent fracture toughness and the size of fracture process zone. The introduction of cracking Poisson's ratio accounts for tensile failure characteristics of concrete even under uniaxal compression. To justify the validity of the model proposed, tests on three-point bending have been performed to obtain the fracture toughness in accordance with two parameter fracture model and double-K fracture model. Surprisingly, it yields favorably comparable results and provides an encouraging alternative approach to determine fracture properties for concretes.
