  • In this study, blowholes, a kind of solid defects, were intentionally introduced in transverse butt-welded joints which are widely used for the connection of main members in steel structures to evaluate the fatigue characteristics of these joints with blowholes according to the difference of the size and shape of blowholes, and a series of tests were performed. Static test results proved that the static strength of these joints with blowholes was not affected by their size and shape. From the fatigue test results on these joints with blowholes, the size and shape of blowholes inside the weld metals were strongly affected in fatigue strength, and we suggested the relationship between fatigue strength and their size and shape quantitatively. Also, Using the relationship of fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor range, the fatigue life of transverse butt-welded joints with blowholes can be estimated properly.

  • The behavior of fatigue crack growth in the single spot welded joint of zinc galvanized steel sheets was studied experimentally and analytically based on fracture mechanics. Axial tension fatigue tests were carried out with the BSxGAB specimen that the bare plane(GAB) of monogalvanized steel sheet was spot welded to the double thickness bare steel sheet(BS), and with the GAxGAB specimen that the galvanized plane (GA) was spot welded to the equal thickness bare plane (GAB) 1. The relation between maximum stress intensity factor, K sub(max) and the number of cycles to failure, N sub(f) has shown a linear relation on log-log plot in the spot weld of the zinc galvanized steel sheet. 2. The fatigue strength of BSxGAB specimens is about 23% higher than that of GAxGAB specimens at the fatigue strength of $1\times10^6$ cycles. And the fatigue life of BSxGAB specimens at the same load range increases 6~9 times higher than that of GAxGAB specimens. 3. The general tendency at the angle of bending($\theta$) in an applied load has changed rapidly at the initial 20% of its life. After then, it has changed slowly. The change at the angle of bending has increased linearly as the load range increases. 4. It has shown a linear relation between the location ratio of initiation ${\gamma}$ and fatigue life $N_f$ on the semi-log graph paper. Here $\gamma$ means that the crack distance between main crack and sub-crack, 2L is divided by the nugget diameter, 2r. $\gamma=a{\cdot}log N_f+n$ (where a and n are material constant.)

  • The structural materials for cryogenic technology have been recently developed to support the many modern large-scale application from superconducting magnets for nuclear fusion reactor, magnetic levitation railway to LNG tankers. However it is pointed out that quenching phenomenon is one of the serious problems for the integrity of these applications, which is mainly attributed to the rapid temperature rising in the material due to some extrinsic factors of structures. From the viewpoint of fracture mechanics, it is therefore very important to clarify the mechanism of temperature rising of structural material due to cyclic loading at cryogenic temperature. From this purpose, fatigue test was carried out for high manganese steel at liquid helium temperature(4.2K) using triangular stress waveform to identify both the mechanism of temperature rising near crack tip and the effect of loading stress waveform on temperature rising near crack tip and the effect of loading stress waveforms on temperature rising. As the results, two types of temperature rising, that is, regular and burst types were observed. And a periodical temperature rising corresponding to the stress waveforms was also found. The peaks of the temperature rising were recorded near both the maximum and the minimum values of the applied stress. The sudden temperature rises, which indicated the higher values than those of periodical temperature rises under the repetition of stress, were observed at the final region of crack growth. It was shown that the peak values of the temperature rising increased with stress intensity factor range.

  • Recent work in the mechanics of fracture points out the desirability of a knowledge of the elastic energy release rate, the crack extension force, and the character of the stress field surrounding a crack tip in analyzing the strength of cracked bodies. The objective of this work is to provide a discussion of the energy rates, stress fields and the like of various cases for anisotropic elastic bodies which might be of interest. Reinforced concrete, wood, laminates, and some special types of elastic bodies with controlled grain orientation are often orthotropic. In this paper, determination of the stress intensity factors(SIFs) of orthotropic plane elastic body using crack tip singular element and fine mesh in near the crack tip is performed. A numerical method in this paper was used by displacement correlation method. A numerical example problem of an orthotropic cantilevered single edge cracked elastic body subjected to shear loading was analyzed, and the results of this paper are in good agreement with those of the others.

  • As the welding spot forms a singular geometry of an external crack type, fatigue failure of spot-welded specimens can be evaluated by means of a fracture parameter. Recasting the load vs. fatigue life relationships experimentally obtained, we predicted the fatigue life of spot-weld specimens with a single parameter denoted the equivalent stress intensity factor. This crack driving parameter is demonstrated to successfully describe the effects of specimen geometry and loading type in a comprehensive manner. The suggested fatigue life formula for a single spot weld can play a key role in the design and assessment of spot-welded panel structures, in that the fatigue strength of multi-spots is eventually determined by the fatigue strength of each single spot. We therefore attempt to evaluate the effectiveness and validity of $K_e$ in predicting the fatigue life of auto seat belt anchor panel. We first establish finite element models reflecting the actual mechanical behavior of 3 types of seat belt anchor specimens. Using finite element models elaborately established, we then obtain the effective crack driving parameter $K_e$ composed of its ductility -dependent modal components. It is confirmed that the $K_e$ concept successfully predicts the fatigue life of multi-spot welded panel structures represented by auto seat belt anchors here.

  • A digital image correlation(DIC) method is a whole-field measurement technique that acquires surface displacements and strains from images information which characterized a random speckle as intensity grey levels. Recently years, this DIC method is being developed and used increasingly in various research. In this study, we tried to apply to aluminum alloy(Al 6061-T6) using DIC method and strain gauge. DIC results demonstrated the usefulness and ability to determine a strain. The test specimen used in this study was an aluminum alloy(Al 6061-T6, thickness 1 mm). For a strain measurement, a strain gauge was attached at the center of a specimen. A specimen was lightly sprayed with a white paint and a black dot pattern was sprayed on its fully dried white surface to obtain a random speckle. The experimental apparatus used to perform the tensile test consisted of universal dynamic tester(5 kN; T.O. Co.) under displacement speed of 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 mm/min. A Model 5100 B Scanner(V. Co.) used to obtain a strain. A CCD camera connected to a PC uses to record the images of the specimen surface. After acquisition, the images were transferred to PC where the DIC software was implemented. An acquired image was evaluated by the DIC program. DIC method for displacement and strain was suggests and it results show a good consistent remarkably. DIC results demonstrated the usefulness and ability to determine surface strain was better than by using classical measurements. The strain field measurement using a DIC is so useful that it can be applied to map strain distributions at a full area. DIC method can evaluate a strain change so it can predict a location of fracture. The findings of the investigation suggest that the DIC method is an efficient and reliable tool for full-field monitoring and detailed damage characterization of materials.

  • Generally, as the welded region of weld structures has the incomplete bead and welded deposit which are able to behave like the surface cracks occasinally, there is a high possibility that the fatigue fracture of the weld structures is due to the surface cracks on the wlded region. This study was done to investigate the effects of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the fatigue behaviors of the surface crack of the heat affected zone (HAZ) for the multi-pass welds under the repetitive pure bending moment. The obtained results are summarized as follows : 1. The crack grows to the depth direction initially as the number of cylces increase, the amount of crack length is increased for the surface dir3ction and cive versa for the depth direction. 2. The fatigue life is increased in a order of as weld, PWHT specimens and parent. 3. As the number of cycles increase, the crack length is increased to th surface direction. The increase of the depth length is blunted at the center of specimen thickness. 4. The fatigue crack growth of PWHT specimens to the surface direction is dependent upon the holding time and applied stress during PWHT. In order words, the crack growth rate decreases with the holding time and increases with the applied stress during PWHT. 5. As the crack grows, the aspect formed in the course of crack propagation approaches to semicircle for parent and ellipse with the largest semidiameter for PWHT ($1/4hr, 15kgf/mm^2$) 6. At depth direction, it is difficult to apply to the paris' equation because of the scattered data between the crack growth rate and the stress intensity factor range.

  • A fatigue crack found at the coped stringer of the old dismantled Dangsan Subway Bridge was numerically simulated. A model of a single span of the plate girder bridge with its beam elements was created and analyzed in order to obtain the nominal stress history caused by trains. A detailed FEM analysis of the coped stringer was conducted using a shell element model. A fracture mechanical model was used to estimate crack propagation. The stress intensity factors were calculated using the J-Integral method. The simulation with some reasonable assumptions showed that the calculated crack lengths were comparable to those found on the site.

  • Delayed hydride cracking (DHC) velocity and threshold stress intensity factor for DHC ($K_{IH}$) tests in the radial direction on M11 pressure tube material in Wolsong unit 1 were carried out following the Atomic Energy Canada Limited (AECL) standard test procedure in order to identify the effect of undercooling on DHCV and to acquire the $K_{IH}$ data. The results showed that $K_{IH}$ 's were 8.8$\pm$0.8 MPa√m in the back offcut and 11.4$\pm$0.7 MPa√m in the front offcut. The fact that $K_{IH}$ in the front offcut is about 20% higher than that in the back offcut is attributed to the microstructural difference between the materials of the front and back ends. $K_{IH}$ 's in M11 pressure tube appeared to be higher than the values from the tubes made of double melted ingot reported earlier. This can be interpreted by the fact that very small amounts of Chlorine (Cl) and Phosphorus (P) are contained in the ingot and that the content of the harmful elements in the M11 pressure tube is equivalent to that made of a quadruple melting process. DHC velocities at 25$0^{\circ}C$ in the front offcut in the radial direction are measured to be 5~8$\times$10$^{-8}$ m/s. The results show that the prior thermal history change the DHC velocity significantly. This effect was confirmed by the experiment of undercooling prior to the DHC tests.DHC tests.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from ASTM SA516 Gr. 70 which was used for pressure vessel plates for room and low temperature service. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C,\;-60^{\circ}C,\;-80^{\circ}C\;and\;-100^{\circ}C$ and in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. At the constant stress ratio, the threshold stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K_{th}$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$ in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was increased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region. The straight line slope relation of logarithm $d{\alpha}/dN\;-{\Delta}K$ in Region II, that is, the fatigue crack growth exponent m increased with descending temperature at the constant stress ratio. It assumed that the fatigue crack growth rate $d{\alpha}/dN$ is rapid in proportion to descend temperature in Region II and the cryogenic-brittleness greatly affect a material with decreasing temperature.
