It is important to ensure the reliability of the first localized reactor vessel steel. To satisfy with this purpose, a study on the impact/hardness, low cycle fatigue(LCF), crack growth rate(da/dN) and fracture toughness( ) of base material(BM) and weld metal(WM) were performed under room temperature air and corrosion conditions. A summary of the results is as folows : (1) Charpy impact absorbed energy of BM was the highest value, heat affected zoon(HAZ) and the lowest, WM. The hardness of BM was similar to HAZ. (2) Coefficients of Manson equation using the monotonic tensile test data were obtained for the present material. (3) The effects of stress ratio and ambient (120.deg. C and NaCl) condition on da/dN were investigated, da/dN with NaCl condition expressed the highest value. (4) The results of Charpy V-notch impact test had good correlation with $K_{IC}$ characteristics and the lowest curve of $K_{IC}$ for BM was derived, more researches about WM and HAZ are required hereafter.
In many cases, the field fracture mechanism of the thermoplastic pipe is considered as either brittle or environmental fractures. Thus the estimation of the lifetime by modeling slow crack growth considering such fracture mechanisms is required. In comparison of the some conventional and empirical equations to explain the slow crack growth rate such as the Paris' law, the crack layer theory can be used to simulate the crack and process zone growth behaviors precisely, so the lifetime of thermoplastic pipe can also be accurately estimated. In this study, the modified crack layer theory for the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of high density polyethylene is introduced with detailed algorithm. The oxidation induction time of the HDPE is also considered for the reduction of specific fracture energy during exposed to chemical environments. Furthermore, the parametric study for an important SCC parameter is conducted to understand the slow crack growth behavior of SCC.
In this study, a laminated composite material with dispersing aluminum oxide powder between the CFRP laminate plies, and also CFRP composites without aluminium oxide powder were fabricated for Mode I experiments using the DCB specimen and a tensile test. The behavior of the crack and the change of the interfacial fracture toughness were evaluated. Also in order to evaluate the damage mechanism for the crack extension, the AE sensor on the surface of the DCB test specimen was attached. AE amplitude was estimated for CFRP-alumina and CFRP composite. And the fracture toughness was evaluated by the stress intensity factor and energy release rate. The results showed that an unstable crack was propagated rapidly in CFRP composite specimen along with the interface, but crack propagation in CFRP-alumina specimen was relatively stable. From results, we show that aluminium oxide powder spreaded uniformly in the interface of the CFRP laminate carried out the role for preventing the sudden crack growth.
In this study, the adhesive fracturing characteristics of a DCB specimen due to single and heterogeneous bonding materials under tearing load was investigated. The experiments were conducted to examine the fracturing properties of the adhesive DCB specimen. As an experimental condition, a forced displacement of 3mm/min was applied to one side while the other side was fixed. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the AL6061-T6 material was superior to the CFRP material in terms of maximum stress, specific strength, and energy release rate when compared to the adhesive fracturing property of a single material. We tested CFRP-AL, a heterogeneous bonding material, and compared its experimental results to the results from the single materials. Based on these results, CFRP-AL with a heterogeneous bonding material was observed to have the superior structural safety compared to single materials for the mode III fracture type.
Since delamination often propagates at the interfacial layer between a surface skin and a foam core, a crack arrester is proposed for the suppression of the delamination. The arrester has a semi-cylindrical shape and is arranged in the foam core and is attached to the surface skin. Here, energy release rates and complex stress intensity factors are calculated using finite element analysis. Effects of the arrester size and its elastic moduli on the crack suppressing capability are investigated. Considerable reductions of the energy release rates at the crack tip are achieved as the crack tip approached the leading edge of the crack arrester. Thus, this new concept of a crack arrester may become a promising device to suppress crack initiation and propagation of the foam core sandwich panels.
A new concept of tungsten heavy alloy composite was suggested and manufactured in this study for the kinetic energy penetrator. The composite heavy alloy was composed of two parts, the center was molybdenum added heavy alloy compositions which were designed to promote the self-sharpening effect and outside was conventional heavy alloy in order to sustain the severe stress condition in the muzzle during the firing. The center part showed an intergranular and brittle mode at tungsten/tungsten interfaces by which self-sharpening effect could be activated. On the other hand, that of outside showed conventional ductile fracture mode under high strain rate condition. From the sub-scale penetration test, the depth of penetration in heavy alloy composites showed greater values than those of conventional tungsten heavy alloys. It is suggested that the heavy alloy composite could be considered as one of the future penetrator materials.
The metis element method (Hung 1978) has been applied to analyse free edge interlaminar stresses and delamination in composite laminates, which are subjected to extension and bending. The paper recalls Lekhnitskii's solution for generalized plane strain state of composite laminate and Wang's singular solution for determination of stress singularity order and of eigen coefficients $C_m$ for delamination problem. Then the formulae of metis displacement finite element in two-dimensional problem are established. Computation of the stress intensity factors and the energy release rates are presented in details. The energy release rate, G, is computed by Irwin's virtual crack technique using metis elements. Finally, results of interlaminar stresses, the three stress intensity factors and the energy release rates for delamination crack in composite laminates under extension and bending are illustrated and compared with the literature to demonstrate the efficiency of the present method.
The propagating crack problems under dynamic plane mode in orthotropic material is studied in this paper. To analyze the dynamic fracture problems in orthortropic material, it is important to know the dynamic stress components and dynamic displacement components around the crack tip. Therefore the dynamic stress components of dynamic stress field and dynamic displacement components of dynamic displacement field in the crack tip of orthotropic material under the dynamic load and the steady state in crack propagation were derived. When the crack propagation speed approachs to zero, the dynamic stress component and dynamic displacement components derived in this study are identical to the those of static state. In addition, the relationships between dynamic stress intensity factor and dynamic energy release rate are determinded by using the concept of crack closure closure energy with the dynamic stresses and represented according to physical properties of the orthotrophic material and crack speeds. The faster the crack velocity, the greater the stress value of stress components in crack tip. The stress value of the stress component of crack tip is greater when fiber direction coincides with the crack propagation than when fider direction is normal to the crack propagation.
