Using a Lagrangian-Lagrangian approach for studying flow behavior inside a bubble column

  • Bubble columns are widely encountered in several industries, especially in the field of nuclear safety. The Eulerian-Eulerian and the Eulerian-Lagrangian methods are commonly used to investigate bubble columns. Eulerian approaches require additional tasks such as strict volume conservation at the interface and a predefined well-structured grid. In contrast, the Lagrangian approach can be easily implemented. Hence, we introduce a fully Lagrangian approach for the simulation of bubble columns using the discrete bubble model (DBM) and moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) methods. Additionally, we propose a rigorous method to estimate the volume fraction accurately, and verified it through experimental data and analytical results. The MPS method was compared with the experimental data of Dambreak. The DBM was verified by analyzing the terminal velocity of a single bubble for each bubble size. It agreed with the analytical results for each of the four drag correlations. Additionally, the improved method for calculating the volume fraction showed agreement with the Ergun equation for the pressure drop in a packed bed. The implemented MPS-DBM was used to simulate the bubble column, and the results were compared with the experimental results. We demonstrated that the MPS-DBM was in quantitative agreement with the experimental data.

  • 본 논문에서는 MPEG-2 비디오 스트림의 프레임을 디코딩하는 멀티미디어 태스크에 대한 효율적인 실시간 스케줄링 기법이 제시된다. 태스크 모델에서 각 프레임은 각각의 멀티미디어 태스크에 의하여 디코딩되며 각 태스크는 비디오 스트림내 프레임의 순서와 중요도에 따라 우선 순위가 설정된다. MPEG-2 비디오 스트림의 디코딩 기능을 수행하는 멀티미디어 태스크마다 CPU 대역폭을 효과적으로 할당하고자 우선순위에 기반한 스케줄링 기법을 사용하는 것이다. 본 논문에서 멀티미디어 태스크에 할당된 CPU 대역폭을 우선순위에 따라 동적으로 제어하는 방법이 기술된다. 우선순위에 의한 스케줄링 기법의 주요 목적은 멀티미디어 태스크들의 디코딩 시간을 감소시키는 한편 종료시한 이후에 실행이 완료되는 디코딩 태스크의 수를 최소화함으로써 멀티미디어 시스템의 실시간적 성능을 향상시키는 것이다. 제시된 스케줄링 기법의 성능은 시뮬레이션 실험을 통하여 다른 기법과 비교 분석된다.

Preliminary Study on the Elemental Quantification of in Ambient Liquid Samples of Microliter Volume Using the In-air Micro-PIXE Technique

  • Quantifying the trace elements in infinitesimal ambient liquid samples (e.g., single raindrop, cloud/fog water, and the soluble fraction extracted from the particles collected for a short time) is an important task for understanding formation processes, heating/cooling rates, and their health hazards. The purpose of this study is to employ an in-air micro PIXE system for quantitative analysis of the trace elements in a thimbleful of reference liquid sample. The bag type liquid sample holder originally designed with $10{\mu}m$ thick $Mylar^{(R)}$ film retained the original shape without any film perforation and apparent peaks of film blank by the end of the analysis. As one of tasks to be solved, the homogeneity of the elemental distribution in liquid reference species was verified by the X-ray line profiles for several references. It was possible to resolve the significant peaks for whole target elements corresponding to the channel number of micro-PIXE spectrum. The calibration curves for the six target elements (Si, S, Cl, Fe, Ni, and Zn) in standard solutions were successfully plotted by concentration (ppm) and ROI of interest net counts/dose (nC).

  • The Sri Autobindo Learning Center(SALC) is sponsoring the development of a passive solar village in Creston, Colorado, Situated near the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Savitri Village will be one of several religious communities in the area. This village will incorporate 12 permanent residences and teaching and guest facilities for fifty to one hundred people. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the passive solar elements and performance of guest house at the Sri Autobindo Learning Center(SALC). To do this evaluation, the following tasks needed to be addressed. 1. the guest house design 2. the location of weather data 3. The determination of the building heating load As part of the evaluation process, guest house design will be modified and the building load and solar saving recalculated. This process will be completed until the building performance is deemed satisfactory. The conclusion is as follows; The high solar savings fraction predicted by SUNCODE should taken as an indication that further design changes would probably not be cost effective. But adding removal overhangs or other low costs measures to increase comfort in the summer appear to be appropriate.

Building Mathematics Competence via Multiple Choice Competitions

  • The paper focuses on a type of mathematics competence noted as synthetic. It is needed for success in multiple choice competition problems and it is crucial for the further development of advanced school students. The concept of synthetic competence includes a large fraction of mathematical competences, but also competences and skills related to informatics and linguistics. The general structure of a multiple choice competition is considered as the first level of assessment of the mathematics component of the synthetic competence. As the second level under consideration is the set of complex tasks in a competition test any of which is a bouquet of ideas. Our standpoint on the didactic specifics and goals of the two levels in perspective of the gifted education is briefly presented in the article and some examples are given.

Red Ginseng Ameliorates Place Learning Deficits in Aged Rats Young Rats with Selective Hippocampal Lesions

  • Ameliorating mechanisms of red ginseng on learning deficits were investigated in the following 3 experiments; its effects on 1) place learning deficits in aged rats and in young rats with selective hippocampal lesions (behavioral study), 2) long-term potentiation in the hippocampal formation (neuro- physiological study), and 3) ChAT (choline acetyl transferase) activity in various brain regions of aged rats (pharmacological study). In the behavioral study, first, performance in the place learning tasks were compared among 3 groups of young and aged rats; control young intact rats (10-12 week old) treated with water, aged rats (28-32 month old) treated with water, and aged rats (28-32 month old) treated with red ginseng (100 mghglday) suspended in water. Second, performance in the place learning tasks was compared among 3 groups of young rats; control intact rats treated with water, rats with bilateral hippocampal lesions treated with water, and rats with bilateral hippocampal lesions treated with red ginseng (100 mg/kg/day). Each rat in these 2 behavioral experiments was tested with the 3 types of the place learning tasks in a circular open field using intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) as reward. The ICSS reward was delivered if the rat (1) moved distance of 100-160 cm (DMT): (2) entered an experiment-determined reward place within the open field, and this place was randomly varied in sequential trials (RRPST); or (3) entered 2 specific places, and did a shuttle behavior between the 2 places (PLT). Performance of the aged rats in the ginseng group was not significantly different from that of control young rats in ICSS (current intensity, bar press rates), DMT and RRPST. However, treatment with red ginseng significantly ameliorated place-navigation learning deficits in aged rats in the PLT. Similarly, red ginseng ameliorated learning and memory deficits in young rats with hippocampal lesions in the same tasks. In the neurophysiological study using young rats, perfusion of hippocampal slices with non-sapon in fraction of red ginseng significantly enhanced magnitudes of the long-term potentiation (LfP) in the CA3 subfield. In the pharmacological study, treatment with red ginseng did not affect ChAT activity in aged rat brain including the hippocampal formation. These results strongly suggest that red ginseng ameliorates learning and memory deficits in aged rats through actions on the CA3 subfield of the hippocampal formation, which were independent of the presynaptic components of the cholinergic system

수공구 손잡이 형태에 따른 청.노년층의 악력과 손가락 힘 및 편안함 분석 (Grip Force, Finger Force, and Comfort analyses of Young and Old People by Hand Tool Handle Shapes)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate aging (young and old), gender (male and female), and handle shape effects on grip force, finger force, and subjective comfort. Four handle shapes of A, D, I, and V were implemented by a multi-finger force measurement (MFFM) system which was developed to measure every finger force with different grip spans. Forty young (20 males and 20 females) and forty old (20 males and 20 females) subjects participated in twelve gripping tasks and rated their comfort for all handles using a 5-point scale. Grip forces were calculating by summation of all four forces of the index, middle, ring and little fingers. Results showed that young males (283.2N) had larger gripping force than old males (235.6N), while young females (151.4N) had lower force than old females (153.6N). Young subjects exerted the largest gripping force with D-shape due to large contribution of the index and middle fingers and the smallest with A-shape; however, old subjects exerted the largest with I-shape and the smallest with V-shape due to small contribution of the ring and little fingers. As expected, the middle finger had the largest finger force and the little finger had the smallest. The fraction of contribution of index and ring fingers to grip force differed among age groups. Interestingly, young subjects provided larger index finger force than ring finger force, whereas old subjects showed that larger ring finger forces than index finger force in the griping tasks. In the relationship between performance and subjective comfort, I-shape exerting the largest grip force had less comfort than D-shape producing the second largest grip force. The findings of this study can provide guidelines on designing hand tool handle to obtain better performance as well as users' comfort.

초등학교 4학년 학생들의 수직선 이해 분석: 분수 개념 및 분수의 덧셈과 뺄셈을 중심으로 (An Analysis of Elementary Students' Understanding of Number Line: Focused on Concept of Fractions and Addition and Subtraction of Fractions)

  • 분수 학습에서 수직선 모델의 중요성에 따라, 본 연구에서는 초등학교 4학년 학생들의 수직선에서의 분수 개념 및 분수의 덧셈과 뺄셈에 대한 이해가 어느 정도인지 살펴보았다. 수직선 검사 도구는 분수 나타내기, 분수의 크기 비교, 분수의 덧셈 및 뺄셈과 관련된 문항으로 구성되었으며 구조화된 수직선과 반구조화된 수직선을 제시하였다. 연구 결과, 전반적으로 정답률이 높지 않았으며, 정답보다 오답의 반응이 높게 드러난 문항들도 있었다. 또한 구조화된 수직선에 비하여 반구조화된 수직선이 제시되는 문항에서의 정답률이 낮게 드러났으며, 다양한 오답 반응을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 초등학생들의 분수 이해 및 수직선 이해를 위한 교수·학습 방향에 관한 시사점을 논의하였다.

예비교사의 시각적 표현에서의 수학적 이해와 문제 만들기 능력의 관련성 분석: 분수의 곱셈과 나눗셈을 중심으로 (Analysis of the Relationship Between Preservice Teachers' Mathematical Understanding in Visual Expressions and Problem-Posing Ability: Focusing on Multiplication and Division of Fractions)

  • 본 연구는 분수의 곱셈과 나눗셈에서 예비교사의 수학적 이해와 문제 만들기 사이의 관련성을 탐색하였다. 이를 위해여 41명의 예비교사들을 대상으로 분수의 곱셈과 나눗셈에 대한 시각적 표현과 문제 만들기 과제를 수행하고 수학적 이해 정도와 문제 만들기 능력을 측정하였으며, 수학적 이해 정도와 문제 만들기 능력 사이의 관련성을 교차분석을 통해 알아보았다. 그 결과, 예비교사들의 대부분은 분수의 곱셈과 나눗셈의 개념적 이해를 나타냈으며, 다섯 가지 유형의 어려움이 나타났다. 문제 만들기에서는 대부분의 예비교사들이 풀 수 있는 수학 문제를 만들지 못했으며 이 과정에서 네 가지 유형의 어려움이 나타났다. 또한 교차분석 결과, 수학적 이해 정도는 문제 만들기 능력과 연관이 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 예비교사의 수학적 이해와 문제 만들기에 대한 시사점을 제시하였다.

비와 비례 과제에서 가법적 전략을 사용하는 학생의 문제해결특징 : 중학생 2명의 사례 연구 (Characteristics of Students' Problem Solving Using Additive Strategy in Ratio and Proportion Tasks)

  • 이 논문의 목적은 비와 비례 과제에서 가법적 전략을 사용하는 학생의 문제해결 과정에서 나타난 수학적 표현을 분석하여 가법적 전략을 사용하는 학생의 수학적 표현이 비와 비례 과제를 해결하는데 어떤 영향을 미치는지 탐구하기 위한 것이다. 가법적 전략은 비와 비례 문제를 해결하는 과정에서 학생에게 많이 나타나는 오류 중의 하나로, 한 양에서 다른 양을 빼어 그 차를 다른 양에 적용하는 전략이다. 학생의 응답을 분석한 결과 학생의 가법적 전략의 유형은 단위를 고려하지 않고 빼기, 전체에서 부분을 뺀 양과 부분 비교하기, 차만큼 더하기, 차만큼 빼기로 나눌 수 있었다. 학생의 가법적 전략을 승법적 전략으로 변화시키기 위해 단위량을 구하도록 유도하였고, 이 과정에서 다음과 같은 특징이 나타났다. 첫째, 두 수 사이의 관계가 정수배가 아닌 경우 똑같이 곱하고 빼어서 원하는 수를 만든다. 둘째, 자연수와 자연수 사이의 중간값으로 표현한다. 셋째, $a{\div}b$$\frac{a}{b}$가 아닌 소수로 표현한다. 넷째, 큰 수를 작은 수로 나눈다. 이상과 같은 결과는 나눗셈과 분수 표현을 잘 관련짓지 못하는 것이 가법적 전략에서 승법적 전략으로의 전환을 어렵게 하고 있음을 보여준다.
