  • The purpose of this study was to evalute the effect of immersion disinfection on the dimensional stability of rubber impression materials. The metallic master model was made in order to simulate the intraoral arch form. Impressions were made from four impression materials (Exaflex, Extrude, Reprosil, Impregum-F) and immersed in three disinfectant solutions (Wydex, Vi-Pon, Potadine). Casts from the impressions were measured according to the interpreparation distance. The A-B and The B-D abutment distance were compared with the control group and disinfected groups. The results were as follows; 1. The measurements of the stone cast increased relative to the master model and there was a significant difference (P<0.05). 2. The relative dimensional change of the stone cast as compared with master model ranged from 0.10% to 0.56% in the A-B distance and ranged from 0.04% to 0.27% in the B-D distance. 3. The dimensional change of the disinfected groups as compared with the control group was significantly different in the three impression materials except for Impregum-F (P<0.05). 4. The relative dimensional change of the disinfected groups compared with the control group ranged from 0% to 0.20% in the A-B distance and ranged from -0.09% to 0.11% in the B-D distance. These results suggest that immersion disinfection of rubber impression materials by chemical disinfectants causes very small dimensional change and the change is clinically acceptable for prothesis fabrication

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 3 dimensional exercises and Klapp's exercise on parameters of scoliosis in subjects with non-structure scoliosis. METHOD: This study was performed on 24 subjects. Twenty-four subjects were divided into two groups; 3 dimensional exercise(n=12), Klapp's exercise(n=12). Both of the group performed the exercise 3 times a week for 5 weeks. The data was analyzed by the Paired t-test for comparing before and after changes of factors in each group and the Independent t-test for comparing the between groups. RESULT: The result are as follows. There was statistically significant difference of before and after arthopometric parameters, trunk flexion, Cobb's angle in 3 dimensional exercise(p<0.05). There was statistically significant difference of before and after acromion high, trunk extension, Cobb's angle in Klapp's exercise(p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference of between the two group in arthropometric parameters, ROM, Cobb's angle(p>0.05). CONCLUSION: As a result of this study, we found that the 3 dimensional exercise may be effective more than Klapp's exercise.

  • In this study, we investigated the methods of using the Cabri3D program for education of problem solving in school mathematics. Cabri3D is the program that can represent 3-dimensional figures and explore these in dynamic method. By using this program, we can see mathematical relations in space or mathematical properties in 3-dimensional figures vidually. We conducted classroom activity exploring Cabri3D with 15 pre-service leachers in 2006. In this process, we collected practical examples that can assist four stages of problem solving. Through the analysis of these examples, we concluded that Cabri3D is useful instrument to enhance problem solving ability and suggested it's educational usage as follows. In the stage of understanding the problem, it can be used to serve visual understanding and intuitive belief on the meaning of the problem, mathematical relations or properties in 3-dimensional figures. In the stage of devising a plan, it can be used to extend students's 2-dimensional thinking to 3-dimensional thinking by analogy. In the stage of carrying out the plan, it can be used to help the process to lead deductive thinking. In the stage of looking back at the work, it can be used to assist the process applying present work's result or method to another problem, checking the work, new problem posing.

  • When we derive multi-scale databases from a source spatial database, thegeometries and topological relations in the source database are transformed according to a predefined set of constraints. This means that the derived databases should be checked to see if the constraints are respected during the construction or updates of databases and to maintain the consistency of multi-scale databases. In this paper, we focus on the topological consistency between the source and derived databases, which is one of the important constraints to respect. In particular, we deal with the method of assessment of topological consistency, when 2-dimensional objects are collapsed to 1-dimensional ones. We introduce eight types of topological relations between 2-dimensional objects and 19 topological ones between 1-dimensional objects and propose four different strategies to convert 2-dimensional topological relations in the source database to 1-dimensional ones objects in the target database. With these strategies, we guarantee the topological consistency between multi-scale databases.

  • In this paper, the approximately coupled method of finite element method and boundary element method to obtain efficient and accurate analysis results is proposed for a two-dimensional elasto-static problem with a geometrically abruptly changing part. As the finite element of a two-dimensional problem, three-node and four-node plane stress element is applied, and as the boundary element of a two-dimensional problem, three-node boundary element is applied. In the modeling stage, firstly, an entire analysis target object is modeled as finite elements, and then a geometrically abruptly changing part is modeled as boundary elements. The boundary element is defined using the nodes defined for modeling finite elements. In the analysis stage, finite element analysis is firstly performed on a entire analysis target object, and boundary element analysis is automatically performed afterwards. As for the boundary conditions at boundary element analysis, displacement conditions and stress conditions, which are the results of finite element analysis, are applied. As a numerical example, the analysis results for a two-dimensional elasto-static problem, a plate with a crack, are presented and investigated.

  • This paper proposes and demonstrates novel flexible contact force sensing devices for 3-dimensional force measurement. To realize the sensor, polyimide and polydimethylsiloxane are used as a substrate, which makes it flexible. Thin-film metal strain gauges, which are incorporated into the polymer, are used for measuring the three-dimensional contact forces. The force sensor characteristics are evaluated against normal and shear load. The fabricated force sensor can measure normal loads up to 4N. The sensor output signals are saturated against load over 4N. Shear loads can be detected by different voltage drops in strain gauges. The device has no fragile structures; therefore, it can be used as a ground reaction force sensor for balance control in humanoid robots. Four force sensors are assembled and placed in the four corners of the robot's sole. By increasing bump dimensions, the force sensor can measure load up to 20N. When loads are exerted on the sole, the ground reaction force can be measured by these four sensors. The measured forces can be used in the balance control of biped locomotion system.

  • The methods developed to measure visual fatigue so far are quite few and lack of validity, and more importantly, they do not figure out the complex properties of the visual fatigue. The purpose of the research was to analyze the factors comprising the visual fatigue and to develop the method to measure it validly. The results are summarized as follows. First, we found that the 3D visual fatigue was comprised of four independent factors (visual stress, eye pain, body pain and image blurring factors). Second, we developed 29 items that measure four factors of 3D visual fatigue. Finally, the watching duration and binocular disparities affected the visual fatigue as had been expected. These results imply that the developed method does measure the three dimensional fatigue validly.

  • Multi-dimensional verbal short-term memory mechanisms are largely divided into the phonological channel and the lexical-semantic channel. The former is called phonological short-term memory and the latter is called semantic short-term memory. Phonological short-term memory is further segmented into the phonological input buffer and the phonological output buffer. In this study, the language performance of each of three patients with similar levels of conduction aphasia was analyzed in terms of multi-dimensional verbal short-term memory. To this end, three patients with conduction aphasia were instructed to perform four different aspects of language tasks that are spontaneous speaking, repetition, spontaneous writing, and dictation in both word and sentence level. Moreover, the patients' phonological memories and semantic short-term memories were evaluated using digit span tests and verbal learning tests. As a result, the three subjects exhibited various types of performances and error responses in the four aspects of language tests, and the short-term memory tests also did not produce identical results. The language performance of three patients with conduction aphasia can be explained according to whether the defects occurred in the semantic short-term memory, phonological input buffer and/or phonological output buffer. In this study, the relations between language and multi-dimensional verbal short-term memory were discussed based on the results of language tests and short-term memory tests in patients with conduction aphasia.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the dimensional stability of wood treated with PEG for better utilization of domestic small-diameter logs. Four species of ring- porous wood(Quercus mongolica FISCH, Quercus variabilis BLUME, Fraxinus rhynchophylla HANCE, Paulownia coreana UYEKI,) and four species of diffuse-porous wood(Prunus sargentii REHDER, Betula davurica PALL, Populus tomentiglandulosa T. LEE, Cornus controversa HEMSLEY) were used for this experiment. The shrinkage of wood decreased with increasing the concentration of PEG. The shrinkage of diffuse- porous woods was lower than that of ring-porous woods. The weight gain increased in proportional to the PEG concentration. Diffuse-porous woods showed a little higher weight gain than ring-porous woods. Bulking effect also increased with increasing the PEG concentration, but was in inverse proportional to the molecular weight of PEG. Diffuse-porous woods showed higher bulking effect than ring-porous woods. Consequently, diffuse-porous woods showed better dimensional stability than ring- porous woods. It was considered that dimensional stability was affected by characteristics of wood such as vessel and tylosis, and density.

  • Alternative binary offset carrier (AltBOC) signals can be approximated by four synchronized direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signals, each pair of which is a quadrature phase shift keyed (QPSK) signal at a different frequency. Therefore, depending on the strength of an incoming AltBOC signal, an acquisition technique can reduce the mean acquisition time (MAT) by searching the four DSSS signals asynchronously; the search for each of the four DSSS signals can start at one of the evenly separated hypotheses on the two-dimensional hypothesis space. And detection sensitivity can be improved by multiple levels when different numbers of search results for the same hypothesis are combined. In this paper, we propose a fast AltBOC acquisition technique that has an asynchronous search strategy and efficiently utilizes the output of the four search results to increase the sensitivity level when sensitivity improvement is needed. We provide a complete theoretical analysis and demonstrate with numerous Monte Carlo simulations that the MAT of the proposed technique is much smaller than conventional AltBOC acquisition techniques.
