This study was performed to investigate effects of low fat diet and saturated fat supplementation on the function of the immune system. Forty male BALB/c mice average-weighing 15g were divided into two dietary groups: 0.7% safflower oil group and 4.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil group. Results are as follows; 1) Food intake, body weight, organ weight, agglutination test, differential white cell count and histological examination of spleen were not different in two dietary groups during the experimental period. 2) Delayed-type hypersensitive test of the mice fed 4.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil was significantly higher than that of the mice fed 0.7% safflower oil ($\alpha$=0.05). 3) Plaque forming cell was significantly reduced at 10th week compared to 7th week in both groups($\alpha$=0.05). Although there was no significant difference between two groups. 0.7% safflower oil groups showed slightly higher plaque forming cell than 4.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil group.
Experiments were performed on mice to investigate the effect of methionine diets (MET) on the immunotoxicity of ethanol. ICR female mice were divided into 5 groups, Met (Basal (B)+0.19% methionine(M), B+1.71% M and B+5.13%W) and ethanol(4%) were administered ad libitum for 21 days. The mice were evaluated for changes in immune status as measured by antibody titer, Arthus reaction, delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH), rosette forming cell(RFC) and plaque forming cell (PFC) to sheep red blood cells (S-RBC). To investigate the change of the non-specific immune response, the number of leukocytes in peripheral blood and phagocyte activity were measured. The results were summarized as follows: (1) The weight ratios of spleen and thymus to body weight were significantly increased by the B+0.19% M, B+0.57% M and B+1.71% M groups in comparison with control group(B), but B+5.13% M group was significantly decreased. (2) Humoral immune responses were significantly increased by the B+0.19% M and B+0.57% M groups in comparison with control group, but B+5.13% M group was significantly decreased. (3) Cellular immune responses were significantly decreased by the B+1.71% M and B+5.13% M groups in comparison with control group. (4) Phagocyte activities were significantly increased by the B+0.19% M, B+0.57% M and B+1.71% M groups in comparison with control groups, but B+5.13% M group was significantly decreased. (5) The number of circulating leukocyte was significantly increased in the B+0.19% M and B+0.57% M groups in comparison with control group, but B+5.13% M group was significantly decreased.
The present study was carried out to investigate whether the aloe had a radioprotective effect in mice exposed to cobalt-60 gamma radiation or not. The survival ratio of mice for 30 days, hematopoiesis of blood-forming stem cells by spleen colony assay, chromosomal aberration frequency of bone marrow cells and histopathological findings of bone marrow were investigated. The survival ratios of aloe administered groups with concentration of 250, 500, 1,000 and 1,500mg for 3 days before irradiation and control group in cobalt-60 gamma irradiated mice(700rads whole body irradiation, dose rate of 50rads/min.) were 77.4, 79.3, 80.6, 90.0 and 53.1%, respectively. The survival ratios of pre-irradiation aloe administered groups were superior to those of post-irradiation aloe groups and control group. In spleen colony assay, Aloe vera administration before irradiation enhanced the recoveries of numbers of blood-forming stem cells of bone marrow of irradiated mice. There were decreased chromosomal aberrations of bone marrow cells at the first day after irradiation in aloe administered groups compared to that of control group. Histopathological findings in the bone marrow of irradiated mice were hypocellularity due to the depletion of myelocytes, abundant of fat vacuoles and these changes were weakened in aloe administered groups compared to that of control group.

The purpose of this study was to suggest the most effective method of group formation necessary fro the cooperative learning of the home economics in the middle school. For this purpose, 12 classes students in the 3rd grade of a middle school in Inchon City have been divided as 3 groups: 4 classes were consisted of the groups by the records, 4 classes by close friend. and 4 classes by lot. The STAD method of the cooperative learning methods has been evenly introduced to all 12 classes for 10 hours in 10 weeks. After those sessions. some questionnaires asking . and were collected from all students, Data, which were analyzed by the method of group formation for male and female students groups, showed following results: 1. The most effective group forming method was the group consisted by lot. This group was more effective than the group by close or the group by records. 2. While male students were influenced by the group forming method in the cooperative learning. female students were not. 3. More activity of the groups resulted more effects of the cooperative learning and made more positive attitude to the study of the home economics, and thus. teachers should care for the activity of each to make the students cooperative and to activate in the class.
This study was conduced to investigate on immune response of the hot water extract(PHE), 50% methanol extract(PME) and acetone extract(PAE) from Glycyrrhiza glabra. The experiment was carried out by phagocytosis, plaque forming cell(PFC), hemalysin titration(HY) and rosette forming cell(RFC) assay by using BALB/c mice. The results obtained from this study are as follow ; The effects of Glycyrrhiza glabra extracts on phagocytosis was tended to be slight increase in GME and GAE groups compared to the control group, but not significant. In the experiment of PFC and HY, the results of experiment groups which was given each samples were significantly higher than the control group. The result of rosette forming cell in GME and GAE groups were significantly higher than control group.
This study was performed to investigate effects of dietary fat content and degree of saturation on the function of the immune system. Sixty male BALB/c mice average-weighing 17g were divided into three dietary groups: 5% safflower oil group, 20% safflower oil group, 19.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil group. Food intake and body weight were measured every day. At 4th, 7th, 10th week after dietary treatment, organ weight measurements, delayed-type hypersensitivity test, plaque forming cell test, agglutination test, differential white cell count and histological examination of spleen were performed. Results are follows; 1) Body weight, food intake and calorie intake were not different in the three dietary groups during the experimental period($\alpha$=0.05). 2) Liver weight was significantly higher in 5% safflower oil group($\alpha$=0.05). Spleen index was slightly higher in mice fed 5% safflower oil and 19.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil. Thymus index in all mice was decreased by aging. 3) Delayed-type hypersensitivity of the mice fed 5% safflower oil and 19.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil was significantly higher than that of the mice fed 20% safflower oil. 4) The number of plaque forming cell was significantly reduced at 10th week compared to 7th week in all group($\alpha$=0.05). Although there was no difference in plaque forming cell among three groups at 10th week, 5% safflower oil group showed slightly higher plaque forming cell than 20% safflower oil group at 7th week. 5) At 4th week, agglutination test seems to be higher in 5% safflower oil group and 19.3% beef tallow & 0.7% safflower oil group compared to 20% safflower oil group. 6) Percentage of neutrophil and eosinophil was slightly reduced in 20% safflower oil group. 7) Spleen tissue was not affected by and dietary treatments. According to our results, the higher the fat content & unsaturation of the diet the lower the cell-mediated immunity of the mice. Humoral-immunity did not appear to be affected by the dietary manipulation. However humoral-immunity was decreased significantly by aging in all dietary groups.

Bacteria were isolated from roots of plants belonging to family Solanaceae and Gramineae, inhabited in Dokdo island. Fifty six endospore-forming bacteria grown on tryptic soy broth (TSB) agar medium and 23 nitrogen-fixing bacteria (NFB) grown on nitrogen free agar medium were isolated, respectively. The isolates were partially identified by analyzing the 16S rDNA and categorized into phylogenetic groups. The 16S rDNA sequences of each identified isolates were compared with sequences of each type strains to analyze phylogenetic relationship by phylogenetic tree. As a result, endospore-forming bacteria and nitrogen-fixing bacteria were classified into 4 and 6 lineage groups, respectively. Among these isolated, 18 were presumed to be novel species candidates based on the similarity (lower than 98%) analysis of the l6S rDNA sequences.
Hierarchical structure of star-forming regions is widespread and may be characteristic of all star formation. We studied the hierarchical structure of star-forming regions in the Local Group galaxies (M31, M33, Phoenix, Pegasus, Sextans A, Sextans B, WLM). The star-forming regions were selected from Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) far-UV imaging in various detection thresholds for investigating hierarchical structure. We examined the spatial distribution of the hot massive stars within star-forming regions from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) multi-band photometry. Small compact groups arranged within large complexes. The cumulative mass distribution follows a power law. The results allow us to understand the hierarchical structure of star formation and recent evolution of the Local Group galaxies.
In order to research the effects of Shipjundaebotang(SDT) and Orostachys Herba(OH) on anti-tumor and immune response, the author performed this experimental study. Experimental groups are divided into five groups, which are solid extract of Orostachys Herba by water(OHW), solid extract of Orostachys Herba by ethanol(OHE), solid extract of Shipjundaebotang (SDT), solid extract of Shipjundaebotang added by solid extract of Orostachys Herba by water(SDT+OHW) and solid extract of Shipjundaebotang added by solid extract of Orostachys Herba by ethanol (SDT+OHE). In these experimental studies, extension of survival days for anti-tumor effect was observed, and de layed type hypersensitivity and rosette forming cell for cell-mediated immune response, hemagglutinin titers and hemolysin titers for humeral immune response, spleenic natural killer cell activity and carbon clearance (K-index) in vitro were measured with mice. The result were summerized as follows: I. SDT, SDT+OHW and SDT+OHE treated groups were significantly recognized to extend the survival days of tumor bearing mice as compared with the control group. 2. Delayed type hypersensitivity was significantly increased in SDT, SDT+OHW and SDT+OHE treated groups as compared with control group. 3. Hemagglutinin titer was increasred in all sample groups as compared with control group, but not significantly. 4. Hemolysin titers was significantly increased in SDT, SDT+OHW and SDT+OHE treated groups as compared with control group, and SDT+OHE treated group showed the increasing effect with significance as compared with the other sample groups. 5. For the effect of roselle forming cell quantitation, SDT, SDT+OHW and SDT+OHE treated groups showed the increasing effect with significance as compared with control group. 6. Natural killer cell activity was significantly increased in SDT+OHW as compared with comrol group, but the other groups, except OHW and SDT+OHW treated groups, revealed the increasing effect as compared with control group, but the significance was not admitted. 7. For the effect of K-index(Carbon clearance), SDT, SDT+OHW and SDT+OHE treated groups showed the increas ing effect with significance as compared with control group. 8.
