  • The term "Big Data" has been defined to encapsulate a broad spectrum of data sources and data formats. It is often described to be unstructured data due to its properties of variety in data formats. Even though the traditional methods of structuring data in rows and columns have been reinvented into column families, key-value or completely replaced with JSON documents in document-based databases, the fact still remains that data have to be reshaped to conform to certain structure in order to persistently store the data on disc. ETL processes are key in restructuring data. However, ETL processes incur additional processing overhead and also require that data sources are maintained in predefined formats. Consequently, data in certain formats are completely ignored because designing ETL processes to cater for all possible data formats is almost impossible. Potentially, these unconsidered data sources can provide useful insights when incorporated into big data analytics. In this project, using big data solution, Apache Spark, we tapped into other sources of data stored in their raw formats such as various text files, compressed files etc and incorporated the data with persistently stored enterprise data in MongoDB for overall data analytics using MongoDB Aggregation Framework and MapReduce. This significantly differs from the traditional ETL systems in the sense that it is compactible regardless of the data formats at source.

A Study on the Performance Comparison of 3D File Formats on the Web

  • 3D file formats typically include OBJ (Wavefront file format), STL (STereoLithography), and FBX (Filmbox). Each format has limitations depending on its configuration and usage, and supported formats are different depending on the software application. glTF helps uniform integration of 3D file formats and allows for more efficient transmission of large 3D geometry files by organizing them in a binary format. This paper presents explanation on OBJ, FBX, and STL which are major examples of existing 3D file formats. It also explains the concept and characteristics of glTF and compares its performance with other 3D file formats on the web. The loading time and packets of each 3D file format are measured according to the web browser environment by means of Google Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge. Experimental results show that glTF is the most efficient and that it exhibits the best performance. As to STL, relatively excessive traffic was observed. This study is expected to contribute to reducing rendering time on the web as 3D file formats are used.

Research for Vitalizing the Exportation of Korean Entertainment Program Format (한국 예능 프로그램 포맷 수출 활성화 방안 연구: 글로벌 예능 프로그램 포맷 특성과의 비교분석을 중심으로)

  • This paper analyzed features of Korean entertainment program formats exported to Asia mostly with that of top 100 Global entertainment program formats exported globally in order to explore Korean entertainment program formats to export globally. Two groups of entertainment program were analyzed in three ways, program category, cast, and material. Regarding program category, quiz game programs showed highest exportation in Global top 100 formats while only 14.3% of Korean entertainment formats exported. As for the cast members, Korean formats prefer well-known celebrities. On the other hand, Global formats produce programs featuring non-famous, ordinary people. Moving on to material of each formats, Global formats focus on puzzle/riddle whereas, Korean formats mainly focus on music/dance and family/parenting. These results indicate that Korean entertainment programs contain strong cultural aspects which generate disadvantages on exportation of these programs, compared to Global entertainment programs. In conclusion, to export Korean entertainment program formats globally, quiz game format with ordinary people and using materials that delivers less cultural aspects are need to be developed.

Analyses on Standard Formats of Spatial Imagery Information (공간영상정보 포맷 분석 및 표준화 방향)

  • This study has analyzed GeoTIFF, SDTS, HDF, and BIIF as the representative formats of spatial imagery information with two parts. First is to compare 4 formats with each other based on 4 comparison criteria (extensibility, interchangeability, current widespread use, long-term stability) by analyzing specification of each format. Second is to estimate current use and interchangeability of 4 formats between 5 commercial softwares used commonly. The result shows that GeoTIFF is currently better than three other formats. However, the more various spatial imagery information are and the larger capacity they have, the more formats are developed and updated, which means that only one format should not be considered as a standard format continuously. It is better to provide a standard format proper to the time through continuous research and sustainable policy support should be followed.

  • The use of program formats has slowly but surely developed into an important component of the television industry. This article examines the surprising gap between the constantly growing, multi-billion-dollar trade of program formats and their unclear and contradictory legal treatment. From both the social and commercial standpoints, television formats are valuable creations. Understanding the two products, the paper and program stages, of a television format and their respective markets, is fundamental to discussions of its legal protection. Interestingly, under current law, the less-developed stages of the process (program ideas and paper formats) are awarded more protection than the aired program format, which accumulates higher levels of investment, creativity, and expression. Internal industry mechanisms, such as vertical integration, damage to reputation, and industry institutions, exist in both markets and are still able to control and influence members' behavior to some extent. However, while the influence of internal industry mechanisms is still strong in the paper format market, in the program format market, which continues to grow, such mechanisms have weakened, amplifying the importance of a clear legal system. The absence of protection will certainly not completely eliminate the production of new program formats. However, these factors do not add up to a case against protection. The changes in the program format market in the last two decades support the theory that the overall effect of providing legal protection for TV formats would promote beneficial competition and encourage more original creations. The underlying question for television formats should not be whether to protect but rather how.

A Study on the Characteristics and Problems of an Integrated KORMRC Bibliographic Formats (KORMARC 형식 통합서지용의 특성과 문제점 분석에 관한 연구)

  • KORMARC formats have been developed in accordance with type of materials at different times. The format was firstly developed and soon after with formats for serials, audiovisual materials, archival and manuscript materials. Although all of the formats were developed according to the same principles, there were same inconsistencies among them. However, there are solved above problems as integrating KORMARC bibliographic formats. First of all, the result was better than we had expected both unified cataloging rules and standard of a descriptive form as accepted KCR4. This study is to roughly analyze integrating process, integrating contents, and problems of KORMARC format.

A Study on Relationship between Printed Book and E-Book Formats Based on Niche Theory (종이책과 전자책의 적소 관계 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze relationship between printed book and e-book formats based on niche theory. Readers with experience reading printed book and e-book were recruited as the research participants. In this study, competition between printed book and e-book formats was measured at gratification niche. five gratifications were derived from an analysis of precedence about printed book and e-book; information acquisition, social interaction & decision making, emotion & habit, portability & storage capacity, and accessibility. The results show that e-book formats have competitive superiority of portability & storage capacity and accessibility. This study suggests that it is possible to replace printed book and e-book formats.

Performance Comparison of 3D File Formats on a Mobile Web Browser

  • As smartphone H/W performance and mobile communication service have been enhanced, large-capacity 3D modeling files are available in smartphones. Common formats of 3D modeling files include STL (STereoLithography), OBJ (Wavefront file format specification), FBX (Filmbox), and glTF (open GL Transmission Format). Each format has different characteristics depending on the configuration and functions, and formats that are supported are varied depending on the applications. Large-size files are commonly used. The 4th generation mobile communication network secures loading of 3D modeling files and transmission of large-size geometric files in order to provide augmented reality services via smartphones. This paper explains the concepts and characteristics of major 3D file formats such as OBJ, FBX, and glTF. In addition, it compares their performance in a wired web with that in the 4th generation mobile communication network. The loading time and packet transmission in each 3D format are also measured by means of different mobile web browsers (Google Chrome and MS Edge). The experiment result shows that glTF demonstrated the most efficient performance while the loading time of OBJ was relatively excessive. Findings of this study can be utilized in selecting specific 3D file formats for rendering time reduction depending on the mobile web environments.

  • In this paper, the comparison and analysis of PTI and IEEE data formats are conducted. and the algorithm and the developed program for data conversion between these data formats are proposed. PTI and IEEE data formats are widely used as the input data form of the software program for power systems. However, they are composed of different formation with each other. So, it is necessary to convert between two formats in order to use more programs with different input data format. Numerical results of the power flow calculation of the test system show that developed program is effective and useful.
