Galaxy clusters are the most massive gravitationally bound systems and thus probably the most recent objects to form. One of promising routes to understand the assembly history of galaxy clusters is to measure observable quantities of components in clusters that are sensitive to the evolutionary state of the cluster. Recent deep observations on the nearby clusters show distinct diffuse intracluster light (ICL), that the light from stars are not bound any individual cluster galaxy, however until now this component has not been well studied due to its faint nature, with typical brightness of ~100 times fainter than the sky background. As shown in galaxy cluster simulation studies, the ICL abundance increases during various dynamical exchanges of galaxies such as the disruption of dwarf galaxies, major mergers between galaxies and the tidal stripping of galaxies. Thus, the ICL is an effective tool to measure the evolutionary stage of galaxy clusters. Moreover, the investigation of the ICL evolution mechanism will allow us understand the galaxy evolution process therein. In this pilot study, we target the Coma cluster, where the existing ICL studies are limited only in the central region. With large and uniform deep optical images from the Subaru telescope, available only recently (Okabe et al. 2014), we are developing a robust ICL measurement technique, extracting the ICL surface brightness and color profiles, which will allow us to study the origin of the ICL and its connection to the evolutionary history of the Coma cluster. For the next phase, we plan to utilize the plenty of spectroscopy data from the MMT telescope to compare ICL properties with the star formation history of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCG), and discuss the ICL formation mechanism of the Coma cluster by comparing the distribution of cluster galaxies with the distribution of diffuse light inside the Coma cluster.

Environments (field, galaxy groups, and galaxy clusters) can affect galaxy evolution due to galaxy interaction which is controlled by different galaxy number densities and velocity dispersions. Since the galaxy interaction or merger triggers both star formation and AGN, AGN fraction can be used to understand the effect of environment. We detected X-ray AGN fraction in a nearby galaxy cluster, Abell 133, using Chandra X-ray image and optical spectra. We found ~600 X-ray point sources in the field of Abell 133 using the 2.8 Msec exposure Chandra images. We determined 3 cluster members based on the redshifts derived from optical spectra obtained from Magellan IMACS observation. The AGN fraction in Abell 133 is similar to that of other environments, i.e., COSMOS and CDFS. We will discuss the results by comparing Abell 133 with other environments.

There is growing observational evidence from several galaxy surveys that the cosmic web plays an important role in shaping galaxy properties in addition to the effects of isotropic environment including local density. To study the distinctive effects of anisotropic and isotropic environments on galaxy properties, we simultaneously examine the galaxy properties as functions of anisotropic and isotropic environments using the SDSS data. We focus on galaxy morphology and star formation/nuclear activity, and find the importance of both anisotropic and isotropic environments in determining galaxy properties.
Star formation activities dominate the evolution of galaxies. Elliptical galaxies are believed to be old galaxies in the Hubble sequence, and elliptical galaxies at different evolution epochs might have different star formation activities and/or morphologies. We investigate the connection between star formation rates and the morphology of elliptical galaxies. With the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Galaxy Zoo, we select a sample of elliptical galaxies by morphology and consider their infrared emission as an index of star formation rate to study the relation between the star formation rates and their morphological properties, such as ellipticities. In addition, we select some nearby spiral galaxies with very low MIR emission to probe the mechanisms of these red spiral galaxies. We display our preliminary results and discuss their implication on the evolution of galaxies in this poster.

Galaxy cluster is the most important laboratoriy to study the effect of environment on galaxies, one of key questions in astronomy. In the local universe, it is well known that red, passive galaxies are concentrated in the cluster core. However, it is still controversial whether the star formation-density relation at the low redshift is retained in the distant universe. Many surveys have tried to find galaxy clusters at various epochs. However the optical dataset has limitations in finding galaxy clusters at z > 1, since the bulk of stellar emission of z > 1 galaxies is redshifted into the near-IR regime. We used the multi-wavelength data from the UKIDSS DXS (J and K bands), the SWIRE (4 IRAC bands), and the PAN-STARRS (g, r, i, z, y bands) and IMS (J band; Im et al. 2015, in preparation) in the European Large Area ISO Survey North1 (ELAIS-N1) field to search for high redshift galaxy clusters and study the properties of member galaxies. Using the multi-wavelength data, we investigated overdensities of galaxies at 0.2 < z < 1.6 based on the photometric redshift information. We found several superclusters where cluster candidates are concentrated within scales of few tens of Mpc at z ~ 0.9. Interestingly, some of the supercluster candidates consist of galaxy clusters which are dominated by blue galaxies. We will present high redshift galaxy cluster and supercluster candidates in ELAIS-N1 field and galaxy properties in different environments including dense clusters and fields.

The standard hierarchical galaxy formation scenario in the popular LCDM cosmogony has been very successful in explaining the large-scale distribution of galaxies. However, one of the failures of the theory is that it predicts too many satellite galaxies associated with massive galaxies compared to observations, which is called the missing satellite galaxy problem. Isolated groups of galaxies hosted by passively evolving massive early-type galaxies are ideal laboratories for finding the missing physics in the current theory. We discover through a deep spectroscopic survey of galactic satellite systems that bright isolated early-type galaxies have almost no satellite galaxies fainter than the r-band absolute magnitude of about Mr=-14. The cutoff is at somewhat brighter magnitude of about Mr=-15 when only early-type satellites are used. Such a cutoff is not observed in the luminosity function of galaxies in the field. Physical properties of the observed satellites depend sensitively on the host-centric distance. All these are strong evidence that galactic satellites can become invisible due to astrophysics of satellite-host galaxy interaction. A recent state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulation of galaxy formation does not reproduce such a cutoff in the satellite galaxy luminosity function. But the past history of the simulated satellites shows that many satellite galaxies near or somewhat fainter than the cutoff magnitude have recently become extinct through fatal encounters with the host or other satellite galaxies. Our observation indicates that the missing satellite galaxy problem could be mitigated if the astrophysics of galaxy interaction is more elaborated in the theory.
NGC 4522 is a spiral galaxy located in the Virgo cluster which appears to be undergoing active ram pressure stripping due to the intracluster medium (ICM). What makes this galaxy special is the extraplanar CO gas, some of which coincides with the extraplanar $H{\alpha}$ patches. As one of the few cases where the interstellar molecular gas is thought to have been pushed out from the stellar disk by the ICM, this galaxy provides an opportunity to study the impact of ICM pressure on the dense/star forming gas and its fate in the extraplanar space after stripping. In order to probe detailed molecular gas properties inside and outside the stellar disk and the associated star formation activities, we have observed NGC 4522 in 12CO (1-0) and 13CO (1-0) using the ALMA. We have targeted two regions, one around the center of the galaxy and one centered on the peak of the extraplanar CO, detecting both lines in both regions. Particularly, this is the first case where 13CO gas has been detected outside the stellar disk in a galaxy undergoing ram pressure stripping. In this work, we present preliminary results from the ALMA observations and discuss the evolution of molecular gas properties and star formation activities inside and outside the stellar disk.

Galaxy overdensities such as galaxy clusters and superclusters are the largest gravitationally bound systems in the Universe. Since they contain many different levels of local densities, they are excellent places to test galaxy evolution models in connection to the environments. The environment studies of galaxies at z ~ 1 are important because the environmental quenching seems to be an important mechanism to reduce star formation activities in galaxies at z < 1. However, there have been not many studies about high redshift galaxy clusters at z ~ 1 because of the lack of wide and deep multi-wavelength data. We have used the multi-wavelength data from the UKIDSS DXS (J and K band), the SWIRE (4 IRAC bands), and the PAN-STARRS (g, r, i, z, y bands) in the ELAIS-N1 field. We identified galaxy cluster candidates at 0.2 < z < 1.6 using the multi-wavelength data. We found several superclusters where cluster candidates are concentrated on few tens of Mpc scale. Interestingly, some of the supercluster candidates consist of galaxy clusters which have high blue galaxy. We will present high redshift galaxy cluster and supercluster candidates in ELAIS-N1 field and galaxy properties in different environments including dense clusters and fields.
Ram pressure stripping of early-type galaxies has been largely neglected until now because of their gas poor nature. MUSE IFU observation vividly reveal the presence of star-forming blobs and ionised gas tails, around an early-type galaxy in Abell 2670. The galaxy was identified as a post-merger galaxy with disturbed faint features, in MOSAIC 2 deep optical images. The imaging also revealed a series of star-forming blobs, situated in the direction facing away from the cluster centre. Thanks to the revolutionary wide field-of-view of the MUSE, combined with 8.2-m VLT (UT-4) at Cerro Paranal, we could simultaneously obtain IFU spectra of the blobs, as well as the galaxy. The MUSE spectra clearly confirms that the star-forming blobs are associated with the early-type galaxy. Moreover, MUSE reveals long ionised-gas tails, emanating from the galaxy. The quantity of gas indicates a gas rich progenitor has merged with the early-type galaxy. However the direction of the tails and blobs, and the blob morphology, appears to indicate that strong ram-pressure stripping may have stripped out gas brought in by the merger. We will present kinematic structure of the whole system (the galaxy, star-forming blobs, and gas tails), as well as the star formation history of the system, supporting a scenario where a recent galaxy merger is subjected to cluster environmental mechanisms.
Using numerical hydrodynamics code RAMSES, we perform idealized galaxy merger simulations and study the star formation of merging disk galaxies. In our simulations, we consider the active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback effect. In order to investigate the star formation influenced by AGN, we run ~60 simulations with various initial conditions. We confirm that star formation is more efficiently suppressed in merging galaxies than in isolated galaxies. In the mergers, AGN effect is more significant when the masses of two galaxies are similar. Furthermore, we find that bulge fraction does not affect the star formation when the AGN effect is considered. We discuss the implications on semi-analytic galaxy formation models and the limitation of the current AGN prescriptions.
