This study was intended to clarify (1) the release of free formaldehyde (2) transfer of free formaldehyde to the contacted fabrics during storing, and (3) the removal effect of free formaldehyde by washing from resin finished fabrics. The results of this study were as follow; 1. The decrease rate of free formaldehyde content in fabrics was higher during storing in open air, poly bag, and glass tube in descending order and the content of free formaldehyde in fabrics was decreased in glyoxal resin finished but, increased in Melamine M-3 resin finished when the fabrics was stored in polybag and in glass tube. 2. Increased amount of formaldehyde transfer to contacted fabrics was noted with Melamine M-3 resin finished than that of glyoxal resin finished. Increased amount of formaldehyde transfer as well as more free formaldehyde were noted in cotton fabrics than in polyester/ cotton blend. 3. The effect of removing free formaldehyde from the fabrics was better in case of solid alkaline soap, synthetic alkaline powdered detergents, neutral detergents in descending order. The romoval of free formaldehyde was marked after the 1st washing and almost no increase in free formaldehyde was found after three times of washing. 4. After first washing, the content of formaldehyde in Melamine M-3 resin finished fabrics increased more rapidly than that of glyoxal resin finished fabrics in condition of closed storing.
In this paper, the extraction mechanism of free formaldehyde in the urea formaldehyde resin finished cotton fabric is discussed. An empirical equation for formaldehyde release has been formulated. $$F=3.7\times10^{-3}\;H\;T^{2.2326}+440$$ in which, F: the amount of free formaldehyde extracted ($\mu$g/g) H: extraction time (min) T: extraction temperature ($^{\circ}C$)
This study was the designed to measure skin irritation caused by clothing at free foraldehde have caused a substantial number of cases of dermatitis type. Free formaldehyde levels were observed in infant's sanitatized goods9disposable diapers, cotton-diapers and under wear etc.) at 1992, 1994. The amount of free formaldehyde was measured by means of Acetyle Acetone method(KS K 0611). As the resort, underwear generally gave the highest free formaldehyde level, but disposable diapers and cotton diapers showed the lowest level. The formaldehyde level in intan's clothing lowered in 1994 than 1992, after the enforcement of the level in intant's clothing lowered in 1994 than 1992, after the enforcement of the formaldehyde level control. it was found that 38.7% of infant's sanitatized goods still exceeded th controlled level(A-Ao : 0.05) In the future, research to lower the amount of formaldehyde released form fabrics will also lead to decreased incidence of garment formaldehyde sensitivity. The possibility of a consumer suffering is being in convenienced form a textile-related skin problem will be even lower than it has been in the past.
In order to control free formaldehyde release from fabric finished with urea-formaldehyde precondensate, the resin finished fabric was padded in urea or acylamide solution, dried and cured at $140^{\circ}C$. The effect of aftertreatment with urea or acrylamide on free formaldehyde release and on characteristics of resin finished fabric were examined. It was shown that aftertreatment with urea was effective to control free formaldehyde release, the free formaldelyde content in aftertreated fabric could be reduced from 900 ppm to 200 ppm and formaldehyde release under accelerated storage condition was also reduced from 8000 ppm to 1000 ppm. Polyacrylamide formed in the fiber during aftertreatment appeared to be a formaldehyde capture. Especially by washing the aftertreated fabric, the ability to control formaldehyde release under accelerated condition was not dimimished in contrast with aftertreated with unea. It suggests that polyacrylamide can be used as a formaldehyde capture which withstand diminution from washing.
As a part of abating the formaldehyde emission of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin adhesive by lowering formaldehyde to urea (F/U) mole ratio, this study was conducted to investigate properties of UF resin adhesive with different F/U mole ratios. UF resin adhesives were synthesized at different F/U mole ratios of 1.6, 1.4, 1.2, and 1.0. Properties of UF resin adhesives measured were non-volatile solids content, pH level, viscosity, water tolerance, specific gravity, gel time and free formaldehyde content. In addition, a linear relationship between non-volatile solids content and sucrose concentration measured by a refractometer was established for a faster determination of the non-volatile solids content of UF resin. As F/U mole ratio was lowered, non-volatile solids content, pH, specific gravity, water tolerance, and gel time increased while free formaldehyde content and viscosity were decreased. These results suggested that the amount of free formaldehyde strongly affected the reactivity of UF resin. Lowering F/U mole ratio of UF resin as a way of abating formaldehyde emission consequently requires improving its reactivity.
To control free formaldehyde release from fabric finished with N-methylol compounds, resin finished cotton fabric was treated with resorcinol solution, dried and cured. Factors affecting to control formaldehyde release have been investigated. It was shown that the aftertreatment with resorcinol greatly suppressed the free formaldehyde release. Up to concentration of about 5% of resorcinol, the concentration of resorcinol effected on the control of free and evolved formaldehyde. And at high concentration of resorcinol, however, the concentration became rather insensitive to contol formaldehyde release. Addition of some salt catalysts such as ammonium chloride, zinc nitrate, sodium acetate and ammonium acetate, was effective in decreasing formaldehyde release. Considering the effect on the control of formaldehyde and crease recovery, ammonium acetate was concidered to be the best catalyst. It was observed that the optimum curing temperature for the resorcinol treatment was about 15$0^{\circ}C$, and that the curing time did not affected formaldehyde release over three minutes. Although the treatment of resorcinol had a little adverse effect on crease recovery of resin finished fabric, this effect could be negligible.
Five low molar ratio urea-formaldehyde (LUF) resins were synthesized in this study. The effects of molar ratio, free formaldehyde content, and catalysts on the curing characteristics of LUF resins were studied by measuring its free formaldehyde content, pH value change after catalysts added, curing rate, and pot life, observing its cured appearance, and analyzing its thermal behavior. The results indicate that: 1) The LUF resin with lower molar ratio than 1.0 can still cure; 2) Free formaldehyde content is not the main factor in affecting curing rate of LUF resin; 3) Compared with ammonium chloride as a traditional catalyst, persulfate salts markedly accelerate the curing rate of LUF resin, and result in the different appearance; 4) the addition of sodium chloride to catalysts can accelerate the curing rate of LUF resin, but the effect is moderate.
To control the amounts of formaldehyde released from the cotton fabric finished with N-methylol compounds, glycerol was used as a formaldehyde-scavenging agent. It was observed the effects of catalysts and curing conditions when aftertreated with glycerol on melamine resin finished fabric. The effects of Different processes of glycerol treatment, and different resins, urea resin and melamine resin, were compared. The conclusions obtained from the results are as follows: 1) It was shown hatt the aftertreatment with glycerol (treated without catalyst) was more effective than treated with catalysts in controlling free formaldehyde. 2) The optimum curing temperature and curing time for the glycerol aftertreatment without adversely affecting the other properties of fabric was about $160^{\circ}C$, 3 min. 3) According to the increase of glycerol concentration in both aftertreatment and simultaneous treatment the amounts of free formaldehyde was reduced. The rate of decrease was manifest within the limits of $6\%$ in the case of simultaneous treatment with glycerol ana resins, and $3\%$ in the case of glycerol aftertreatment on resin finished fabrics. 4) Dry wrinkle recovery angle was decreased the increase of glycerol concentration. Melamine resin had a little adverse effect than urea resin, particulary glycerol aftertreatment. 5) The breaking strength was increased with the increase of glycerol concentration.
This paper is concerned with formaldehyde release from durable press finished rayon fabrics. $100\%$ rayon fabrics were treated with 3 kinds of commercial N-methylol crosslinking agents using a pad-dry cure technique. Aqueous extractions of fabric samples were carried out at $40^{\circ}C$ under pH's of 4, 7, 10. Formaldehyde release was evaluated for the types of resins, catalyst concentrations and extraction conditions. Results indicated that the higher concentration of catalyst leads to the more fixation of resin on the fabric. Total formaldehyde released to the extract was decreased as the catalyst concentration increased. For the resin types, the amount of formaldehyde released was in the order of DMU>MDMDHEU>DMDHEU. Free formaldehyde content in the extract was in the order of pH10>pH4>pH7. This result proved that resins are least resistant to alkaline hydrolysis and the N-C bond cleavage under alkaline condition. Under acidic condition, however, N-methylol formaldehyde was accumulated before the release of free formaldehyde. This suggested the C·0 bond cleavalge to form carbonium - immonim intermediate.
Hexachloro-cyclophosphazene(HCCP), a formaldehyde-free flame retardant (FR), was steam-cured with triethanol amine(TEA) to impart durable flame-retardancy to cotton fabrics. While the HCCP treatment alone showed very limited resistance to repeated laundering cycles, the addition of TEA substantially improved the laundering durability of the FR cotton up to twenty laundering cycles. The extended washing resistance was accomplished by the increased nucleophilic substitution of unreacted P-Cl groups in HCCP by the TEA resulting in the more densely crosslinked FR networks. With increasing molar ratio of TEA to the HCCP up to 2, the flame retarding effectivity and the synergistic effectiveness improved to 2.8 and 1.8 respectively. TGA and microscale combustion calorimetry verified the pyrolysis and combustion behaviors of the FR-cotton, which showed lower maximum pyrolysis and combustion temperatures together with substantially decreased peak pyrolysis and heat release rate, synergistically yielding larger amounts of carbonaceous chars. The formaldehyde-free HCCP and TEA can be a durable FR finishing agents for cotton fabrics acting through a solid-phase flame-retarding mechanism.
