In order to study the effect of shot blasting condition on the formability of thin high strength steels, specimens were made by changing line speed of a commercial shot blasting plant with maintaining constant impeller condition. Surface roughness of prepared specimens was multiplied by lowering line speed or increasing density of shot impact. Formability was reduced as increasing shot impact. The elongation and stretching formability of shot blasted sheet were decreased by about 10% compared to original sheet. More significant decrease in bending formability was observed after shot blasting. This might be due to the concentrated impact near the surface where major strain occurs during bending process.

The effects of TRansformation Induced Plasticity(TRIP) phenomena on the plastic deformation of 0.2C-1.5Si-1.5Mn multiphase steels have been investigated at various heat treatment and stress conditions. In order to estimate the formability, the hole expansion(HE) tests and the tensile tests were carried out. The formability evaluated from the uni-axial tensile tests was quite different from the formability measured from multi-axial HE-tests. Consequently, the formability in the multi-axial stress state decreased due to the extinction of the retained austenite relatively at earlier deformation stage and the production of irregular α' martensite. However, the defects of TRIP-steels were initiated exactly at the boundary between transformed martensite and ferrite matrix regardless of stress state. In addition, new experimental formula is proposed in order to predict the multi-axial formability of the TRIP steels from the results of uniaxial tensile test.
In this study, laser welding of aluminum AA5182 with AA5356 filler wire was carried out and the formability of the weld joint was evaluated through Erichsen test according to laser power, welding speed and wire feed rate. Fracture was occurred in both directions, perpendicular and parallel to the weld line at 0.75 of Erichsen ratio. Second order Regression model to estimate Erichsen ratio with experimental variables was proposed and the performance of model was evaluated with F-test and average error rate.

Formability of sheet metals can be evaluated using tensile testing. Easily measured tensile properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, strain hardening exponent, strain rate sensitivity and plastic strain ratio are important parameters to evaluated the sheet formability. This paper briefly explains how these properties are related to deep drawability and stretchability. The plastic anisotropy of sheet metals is usually attributed to the crystallographic texture. However dislocation distribution may influence the anisotropy.
This study investigated the formability and appearance performance of 20 women's worsted fabrics. For this purpose, 10 foreign fabrics (9 Italian + 1 Japan fabrics) were prepared and 10 domestic worsted fabrics for women were made in Cheil woolen textile company for comparing with foreign fabrics. The mechanical properties of the 20 fabrics were measured using KES-FB and FAST systems; subsequently, fabric formability (F) and total appearance value (TAV) were calculated and compared with a virtual 3-D simulation silhouette by i-designer CAD system. The fabric formability of the domestic fabrics, calculated by KES-FB system, was lower than foreign fabrics, which was assumed to be caused by the stiff tactile property. The result was similar to that of the FAST system. Good wearing performance of the foreign worsted fabric was assumed to be caused by high extensibility and the compressibility of the fabrics. The TAV's of the domestic fabrics were also lower than foreign fabrics. Both the correlation between TAV and formability by the KESFB system and the correlation between TAV and formability by FAST system showed a good correlation coefficient. Fabric formability between KES-FB and FAST systems also showed a good correlation. The 3-D simulation silhouette of the foreign fabric by i-designer CAD system appeared superior to the domestic one, and assumed to be attributed to the low extensibility of the weft direction, stiff bending and high shear properties of the fabric.
The press formability analysis of welding parts was studied in the current work by the tailor welded blank. As the body panel is used in the press forming of welding parts by a weld method of the tailor welded blank, the following conditions are demanded: 1) The strength of welding parts must be the higher than base metals. 2) After the welding, severe welding deformatins must be avoided. 3) The press formability of welding parts is similar to that of many base metals. 4) The productibility of a welding has to be higher. There are many welding methods satisfying these conditions, but the purpose of this study is to inbestigate the upset weldability and formability of the material (SPCC). SPCC steel sheet showed good weldability and formability under some welding conditions. The experimental results were discussed by the evaluation of the results obtained from tensile tests, hardness tests, micro-structures and Erichsen cup test was a little lower than that of parent material.
Formability simulation of automotive panels at early design phases can reduce product and tooling development time and cost. However, for the simulation to be effective in leading the design process, fast and reliable results should be achieved with limited design definition and minimum modeling effort. In this paper, nonlinear finite element analysis is used to develop an automated process for the formability simulation of automotive body panels at early design phases. Due to the limited design definition at early design phases, the automated simulation process is based on the plane strain analysis for selected number of typical sections along the panel. Therefore, an entire panel can be analyzed with few sections. The state of plane strain can be easily induced, during simulation through symmetry and applied boundary conditions that simplify the modeling process. To study the reliability and effectiveness of the developed simulation process, the analytical results are compared with measured results of production automotive body side panels. The comparison demonstrates that the developed simulation process is reliable and can be effective for analyzing sheet metal formability, in early vehicle development phases.
The maximum butt-joint gap size in $CO_2$ laser beam welding of SAPH steel plates with different thicknesses and its bending formability were studied. In the range of the gap size$\geq$0.1mm, the optimal butt welding speed was faster than that of no gap (air gap) condition. This behaviour was independent on the difference of thickness at any combination. Also, the allowable gap size in steel plates with different thicknesses was larger than with same thicknesses. In the range of $T/T_0$(bead shape) $\geq$ 0.8, good bending formability was obtained at any combination of thickness. The formability was improved by reducing the hardness in weld bead using pre-heating process. Finally, FEM result of the laser beam welded underframe with different thicknesses was compared to that of the conventional spot welded underframe.

Since the sheet forming of Mg alloy has many difficulties due to the low formability, many forming conditions need to be selected properly. Especially, the process variables should be investigated to increase the formability, such as, forming temperature. In this paper, the effects of forming process variables has been investigated using the bending and deep drawing process. A simple U-bending designed for mobile part could be formed in room temperature and springback amounts are surveyed. On the other hand, square cup part couldn't be formed in room temperature due to the low formability. Therefore, the effects of forming temperature are investigated in deep drawing process for square cup part. As a experimental and FEM results, the optimum forming temperature is presence and formability in a higher temperature is less than that of lower temperature. Above experimental results are compared with the FEM analysis and well coincided with the experimental results. Therefore, more detail investigations could be progressed to select more appropriate process conditions by the FEA.

In order to analyze the stretch forming characteristics of tailored blanks, laser welded blanks of different thickness and strength combinations were prepared and stretching tests were done. The stretching formability of laser welded blanks was reduced as increasing the deformation restraining force ($strength{\times}thickness$) ratio between two welded sheets. Weld line movement was attributed to strain concentration at weaker sheets and resulted in fracture at weaker sid, so that fracture could be predicted by the forming limit of the weak sheet. In the case of a welded blank with the similar deformation restraining force rations between two welded sheets, crack occurred at weld and its forming limit was about 15% less than the base sheet. The effects of lubrication and weld line position on stretch-ing formability were also investigated by experiments. Lower friction did not always give better formability for tailored blanks. Stretching formability was observed to be improved as increasing the area of weak sheet.
