This study was to investigate the growth of planted red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et. Z.) seedling, soil properties and understory vegetation structure after fertilizer treatments [unfertilized plot (control), CF plot (Combination Fertilizer), UF plot (Urea Formaldehyde Fertilizer)] in a Pinus densiflora stand planted after the forest fires in Gosung, Gangwon province. The height growth rates of seedlings in four years were 264% in unfertilized, 404% in CF, and 388% in UF plots, respectively. The root collar diameters were increased 340% in unfertilized, 454% in CF, and 427% in UF plots, respectively. No significant changes occurred in soil total nitrogen and potassium ion ($K^+$) with the fertilization. However, available $P_2O_5$, content in the soil surface (0-15 cm) increased with the fertilizer application. Soil organic matter increased significantly with fertilizer treatments, while gradual decrease occurred in unfertilized plots. Sodium ion ($Na^-$) decreased in all sites. Soil pH, CEC, calcium ion ($Ca^{2+}$) and magnesium ion ($Mg^{2+}$) contents were not significantly different among treatments. Although Shannon's species diversity index and species richness in understory vegetation did not change with fertilizer treatments, vegetation cover rates in forest floor increased significantly with the fertilization. These results suggest that the increase of pine seedling growth and vegetation cover rates with fertilization could enhance soil stabilization in forest tire areas.

Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.) seedlings were grown under low light intensity and ozone treatments to investigate the role of the light environment in their response to chronic ozone stress. One-year-old seedlings of Platanus occidentalis L. were grown in pots for 3 weeks under low light (OL, $150{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) and high light (OH, $300{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) irradiance in combination with 150 ppb of ozone fumigation. After three weeks of ozone and light treatment, seedlings were placed in ozone free clean chamber for 3 weeks for recovery from ozone stress with same light conditions to compare recovery capacity. Ozone fumigation determined an impairment of the photosynthetic process. Reduction of leaf dry weight (14%) and shoo/root ratio (17%) were observed in OH treatment. OL treatment also showed severe reductions in leaf dry weight and shoot/root ratio by 48% and 36% comparing to control, respectively. At the recovery phase, OH-treated plants recovered their biomass, whereas OL-treated plant showed reduction in leaf dry weight (52%) and shoot/root ratio (49%). OH-treated plants reached similar relative growth rate (RGR) comparing to control, whereas OL-treated plants showed lower RGR in stem height. However, there were no significant differences in response to those treatments in stem diameter RGR at the recovery phase. Ozone treatment produced significant reduction of net photosynthesis in both high and low light treatments. Carboxylation efficiency and apparent quantum yield in OL-treated plants showed significant reductions rate to 10% and 45%, respectively. At the recovery stage, ozone exposed seedlings under high light had similar photosynthetic capacity comparing to control plants. Antioxidant enzymes activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR) were increased in ozone fumigated plants only under low light. The present work shows that the physiological changes occur in photosynthesis-related parameters and growth due to ozone and low light stress. Thus, low light seems to enhance the detrimental effects of ozone on growth, photosynthesis, and antioxidant enzyme responses.

This study was conducted to compare the growth of Zoysia japonica depending on different soil treatments in Saemangeum sea dike, which is filled with dredged soil. Zoysia japonica was planted using sod-pitching method on the control plot. On plots which were treated with forest soil and soil improvement, Zoysia japonica seeds were sprayed mechanically. Sixteen months after planting, coverage rate, leaf length, leaf width, and root length were measured and analyzed. Also, three Zoysia japonica samples per plot were collected to analyze nutrient contents. Coverage rate was 100% in B treatment plot(dredged soil+$40kg/m^3$ soil improvement+forest soil), in C treatment plots (dredged soil+$60kg/m^3$ soil improvement+forest soil), and D treatment plots (dredged soil+$60kg/m^3$ soil improvement), while only 43% of the soil surface was covered with Zoysia japonica on control plots. The width of the leaf on C treatment plots (3.79mm) was the highest followed by D treatment (3.49mm), B treatment (2.40mm) and control plots (1.97mm). Leaf and root length of D treatment was 30.18cm and 13.18cm, which were highest among different treatments. The leaf length of D treatment was highest followed by C, B, and A treatments. The root length of D treatment was highest followed by C, A, and B treatments. The nitrogen and phosphate contents of the above ground part of Zoysia japonica were highest in C treatment, followed by D, B, and A treatments. The nitrogen and phosphate contents of the underground part of Zoysia japonica were highest in D treatment, followed by C, A, and B treatments. C and D treatments showed the best results in every aspect of grass growth. The results of this study could be used to identify the cost effective way to improve soil quality for soil surface fixation on reclaimed areas using grass species.
The study aimed to develop a cryopreservation method for long-term storage using mature somatic embryo of Japanese larch. In this study, desiccation treatments significantly affected re-induction rates of embryogenic tissue (ET) from dried somatic embryos. In the effect of different dehydration temperature and duration on the re-initiation ET. the highest frequency was shown when somatic embryos were dehydrated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 2 (45.5%) or 1 day (43.3%), respectively. In addition, low temperatures [$4^{\circ}C$, 2 days (44.2%) or 3 days (43.5%)] were marked higher ET initiation. After that, the initiation value was declined with dehydration duration. For comparison of different relative humidity on re-induction frequency of ET, the best re-induction (43.5%) was obtained from somatic embryos pre-dried at $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ (RH 79%). Both $Na_2HPO_4$ (RH 97%) and $Na_2CO_3$ (RH 88%) treatments were showed the similar rate, 34.6, 34.2%, respectively. However the lowest rate (19.6%) was observed in distilled water (RH 100%). In comparison of the various storage temperatures and duration of the dried somatic embryos, the highest frequency (66.9%) of re-initiation was obtained when somatic embryos were cryopreserved for one day. However, the frequency was gradually decreased as the time length of storage increased regardless of types of storage. None of ET re-initiated when stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 1, 2 and 84 days.
Dehydrins are group II, late embryogenesis abundant proteins that act putatively as chaperones in stressed plants. To elucidate the function of dehydrins in poplar, we isolated the $SK_2$-type dehydrin gene Podhn from Populus alba $\times$ P. tremula var. glandulosa suspension cells and analyzed its expression following treatments of abiotic stress, wounding and plant growth regulator. Sequence homology and phylogenetic analyses indicate Podhn encodes an acidic dehydrin (pI 5.14, 277 amino acids, predicted size 25.6 kDa) containing two lysine-rich "K-segments" and a 7-serine residue "S-segment", both characteristic of $SK_2$-type dehydrins. Southern blots show Podhn genes form a small gene family in poplar. Podhn was expressed in all tissues examined under unstressed conditions, but most strongly in cell suspensions (especially in the stationary phase). Drought, salt, cold and exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) treatments enhanced Podhn expression, while wounding and jasmonic acid caused its reduction. Therefore, Podhn might be involved in ABA or stress response.

This research was studied to inverstigate the effect of plant mixtures and tackifibers on the vegetation of slope sites. 5 type plant mixtures(tree type, forest type, native herbaceous plant type, foreign herbaceous plant type, and cool-season turfgrass type) and 3 different tackifibers (Guar tackifibers, Polyarchrylamide tackifibers and Cellulose methyl starch) were treated with 3 replications on the experimented slope. The germination and coverage rate were high on native and foreign herbaceous plants and low on cool-season turfgrass, forest and tree types. We could notice that herbaceous plant types were effective on the vegetation of slope in the short term. Because tree or forest type vegetations similar to natural plant habitat, however, were preferable on slope vegetation in the long term, tree species of high germination rate should be selected in this experiment for tree or forest type slope vegetations. Tackifiber treatments increased the germination rate during the early treatment stage. However, the effect of tackifiber treatment on germination rate was decreased on the elapse of time. Guar tackifiber treatment was most effective on the vegetation of slope. As far as soil erosion control was concerned, all tackifiber treatments were effective compared to control.
To establish in vitro nodal culture conditions of Echinosophora koreensis Nakai, one of rare and endangered species famous for beautiful flowers in the Korean Peninsula, the influence of plant growth regulators (PGRs) on shooting and rooting from in vitro shoots was investigated. In shoot multiplication, addition of 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) to the half-strength Driver and Kuniyuki's media in the range of 2.22 to 8.88 ${\mu}M $induced 2.5 to 2.7 shoots per axillary bud; and addition of 2.27 ${\mu}M $ thidiazuron (TDZ) produced 3.2 shoots, during 4 weeks of culture, while zeatin and isopentenyl adenine (2ip) were not effective on shoot multiplication as observed from several combination treatments of BA with other PGRs. Shoots established were smaller than 2 cm in length, in most of the treatments. while in BA 8.88 ${\mu}M $ treatment more than 30% of shoots were longer than 2 cm and shorter than 4 cm. In rooting, naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) from 5.37 to 21.48 ${\mu}M $ showed the rooting rate from 40.0 to 62.5%. Indole butyric acid (IBA) addition had little effect on rooting (<10%), although some roots in IBA-containing media were longer than those in NAA. Micropropagation from axillary buds of nodular explants was applicable and promising to multiplication and conservation of Echinosophora koreensis Nakai.

The empty fruit bunch fibers(EFB) of oil palm were examined for optimal utilization of the EFB fibers. The EFB fibers were obtained by shredding EFB, followe by removal of fines. The surface properties of the fibers were modified with various pre-treatments, such as hot water extraction, the soaking treatments with NaOH, $ClO_2$ and n-hexane. The changes in the fiber surface were examined with FT-IR method, which showed the changes in chemical compositions such as pectin, lignin, and etc. according to the pre-treatment methods. And the z-directional tensile testing of the fiber mold made of the treated EFB fibers showed the changes in the bonding strength by the pre-treatments. The fiber mold made of EFB fibers treated with $ClO_2$ showed the greater increase in the tensile energy absorption although the NaOH treatment resulted in the severer impact on the EFB fibers.
This study was conducted to investigate the propagation characteristics of Cephalotaxus koreana by cutting, whose plant has been known to new anticancer treatments. The treatments of plant growth regulators, cutting media temperature and growing media were investigated to know the rooting ability of cuttings. For rooting formation affected by plant growth regulators and its concentration, The application of IBA 100 mg/L was most effective in all of the characteristics including rooting rate of 88.5%. The optimum media temperature by cutting was $24^{\circ}C$ (treatment IBA 100 mg/L, rooting rate 84.6%), predicting that greenwood cutting from June to July is most effective. VPPL (vermiculite+peatmoss+perlite 1:1:1(v/v/v)) showed the highest value in all of the characteristics including rooting rate of 68.5% for the effect of growing media on rooting formation.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of temperature and shading on germination and early growth of Pimpinella brachycarpa. Experiment was performed by temperature controls ($5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$) and shading treatments (control, 35% shading, 50% shading, and 75% shading). Seed pre-treatment before the germination experiment was carried out by temperature (with low temperature and wetting treatments for 0day, 20days, and 40days). Seeds of P. brachycarpa were, 20days of seed pre-treatment, germinated well at $5^{\circ}C$ and the more temperature went up, the more germination rate went down. As a result of surveying shading treatments, the height, leaf area, leaf length, leaf width etc were the highest (7.3cm, $12.8cm^2$, 5.4cm, and 2.3cm, respectively) under 50% shading. Specially, the root was grown well under 35% and 50% shading. Fresh weight of shoot (leaves+stem) was the highest under 50% and 75% shading and dry weight of shoot (leaves+stem) was the highest under 35% and 50% shading. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, it is concluded that the production of P. brachycarpa seedling is more effective under 50% shading.
