Various matching methods have been introduced by investigators to improve digital elevation model (DEM) accuracy of satellite imagery. This study proposed an area-based matching method according to land cover property using correlation coefficient of pixel brightness value between the two images for DEM generation from IKONOS stereo imagery. For this, matching line (where "matching line" implies straight line that is approximated to complex nonlinear epipolar geometry) is established by exterior orientation parameters to minimize search area. The matching is carried out based on this line. Land cover classes are divided off into water, urban land, forest and agricultural land. Matching size is selected using a correlation-coefficient image in the four areas. The selected sizes are $81{\times}81$ pixels window, $21{\times}21$ pixels window, $119{\times}119$ pixels window and $51{\times}51$ pixels window in the water area, urban land, forest land and agricultural land, respectively. And hence, DEM is generated from IKONOS stereo imagery using the selected matching sizes and land cover map on the four types.

This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics of warm-season turfgrasses and to find out suitable turfgrass species on Saemangeum reclaimed land. Twenty native zoysiagrass(Zoysia sinica, Z. matrella, Z. japonica, Medium-leaf type zoysiagrass(hybrid zoysiagrass)) and bermudagrass(Cynodon dactylon) collected from Korea were used in this study. Total stolon length and the number of stolon per square meter, relative growth rate of shoot and stolon, and coverage rate were analyzed for 2 year. C. dactylon showed not only the most growth response with high relative growth rate of shoot and stolon, which were 19.9% and 66.3%, but also resulted in higher level of turf visual quality compared to others. Whereas Z. japonica showed the least growth response with low relative growth rate of shoot and stolon, which were 2.4% and 0.7%. Although all warm-season turfgrasses took root and grew up well, there were different growth rates between the interspecies. Z. sinica 'Z2034', Z. matrella 'Z4091', Z. japonica 'Z1064', Medium-leaf type zoysiagrass 'ZN6019' and C. dactylon 'BN7014' were the greatest growth rate of shoot and stolon. These results will be useful for selecting salt tolerant breeding lines and also used to develop a turfgrass cultivar with strong salinity tolerance through continuous monitoring.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of soil covering and vegetation base materials implementation on the growth of Lespedeza cyrtobotrya Miq. in abandoned coal mine land. We compared the biomass of L. cyrtobotrya at the study plots of four different soil covering depth (control, 10cm, 20cm, and 30cm) and four different compounds of vegetation base materials composed of soil conditioner (S), erosion control (E), and peat moss (P) (control, S+P, E+P, and S+E+P). The result showed that the biomass of L. cyrtobotrya was higher in the study plots implemented with soil covering than control plot, although the increase in biomass was not constant with soil covering depth. In case of the vegetation base materials treatments, the biomass was highest in S+E+P plot, and S+P and E+P plots showed higher biomass than control plot.

The purpose of this study is to analyze impacts of the forest fragmentation caused by development project. Furthermore, to investigate the applicability of landscape indicator when 'Feasibility of forest land conversion to other use' is conducted. The study site was consisted of golf course development and road construction. It is to compare before and after impacts of areal and linear development. As for the methods, selecting landscape indices, clustered into 3 Categories have been utilized. Category I was concerned with 'size of forest patches', II as 'shape of forest patches', and III as 'Core Area' These were calculated by FRAGSTATS, the program for analyzing fragmentation. The results showed that linear development caused more fragmented than areal development projects. Also, patch size, patch shape and core area are related to impacts of development, while Patch size decreased, patch shape and core area increased after development. Therefore, it is necessary to minimize the impacts of forest by considering fragmentation when development project is planned.

This study was performed to show criteria of a National Ecological Network (NEN) for South Korea and it was a part of a study of ecological network for broad areas on national land showed by Ministry of Environment of Korea. After 1970s, many european countries presented methods and criteria not on individual protected area but on networking among many habitats. The PEEN (Pan European Ecological Network) and NATURA 2000 are results of those. In South Korea, concepts and mapping metheods of ecological network was studied but those were not applied to the whole national land because the equality and local specialities were not reflected. So, in this study, we presented the criteria composed of forest, river, wildlife and coastal evaluation items in conservation ecology and showed the mapping method which can applied to the national land. After the evaluation on land area which composed of forest, river and wildlife axis. Core areas were $30,616km^2$, buffer zone were $21,870km^2$ and each accounted for 31% and 22% of the national land. Except for Taebaeck-Gangwon region, whole region's core areas were accounted for 20~30% of it and buffer zone were accounted for 20~25% of it, so these can be applied to the national land with equality and local specialities. Forest axis and river axis were clearly linear and connected, but the wildlife axis was dispersed in point form. Therefore, to apply the NEN, a detailed habitat map is important and the interconnected implementation of forest, river, wildlife, and coastal axis is required.
This study was carried out to evaluate high resolution satellite imagery of IKONOS for classifying the land cover, especially forest type. The IKONOS imagery of 11km$\times$11km size was taken on April 24, 2000 in Bong-pyoung Myun Pyungchang-Gun, Kangwon Province. Land cover classes were water, coniferous evergreen, Larix leptolepis, broad-leaved tree, bare land, farm land, grassland, sandy soil and asphalted area. Supervised classification method with algorithm of maximum likelihood was applied for classification. The terrestrial survey was also carried out to collect the reference data in this area. The accuracy of the classification was analyzed with the items of overall accuracy, producer's accuracy, user's accuracy and k for test area through the error matrix. In the accuracy analysis of the test area, overall accuracy was 94.3%, producer's accuracy was 77.0-99.9%, user's accuracy was 71.9-100% and k and 0.93. Classes of bare land, sandy soil and farm land were less clear than other classes, whereas classification result of IKONOS in forest area showed higher performance than that of other resolution(5-30m) satellite data.

Soil seed banks as natural storage of plant seeds play an important role in the maintenance and regeneration of watershed. Natural regeneration potential of the soil seed bank of Land use types (LUTs) in Ogun River watershed (ORW) was investigated. ORW was stratified using proportionate sampling technique into Guinea Savannah (GS), Rainforest (RF) and Swamp Forest (SF) Ecological Zones (EZs). Three LUTs: Natural Forest (NF), Disturbed Forest (DF) and Farmland (FL) were purposively selected in GS: GSNF, GSDF, GSFL; RF: RFNF, RFDF, RFFL and SF: SFNF, SFDF, SFFL, respectively. Systematic line transects was used in the laying of the sample plots. Sample plots of 25 m×25 m were established in alternate positions. Ten 1 m×1 m quadrats were randomly laid for soil core sampling from previously randomly selected ten plots. The core samples (10) were pooled per plot in each LUT and placed in individual trays. Ten trays with sterilized soil were used as control. The trays were watered regularly and checked for seedlings emergence fortnightly for 18 months. The experimental design used was 3×3 factorial experiments. ANOVA, Diversity index (H') and Similarity index (SI) were used to analyze the data. There was significant difference in seedling emergence among ecological zones and land use types (p<0.05). A total of 4,400 seedlings emerged from the soil samples. All species were distributed among 32 families. FL in the RF had the highest number of germinated seeds (705±37.33 seedlings) followed by DF in the RF (701±49.6 seedlings). The lowest emergence was in NF of the SF (199±28.41 seedlings). DF in the RF had highest number of species (34) distributed among 22 families. Emergence from soil seed bank of NF in ORW was generally with more of tree species than herbs that were predominant in FL and DF.

The study aims to assess composition, diversity and population indices of natural regeneration of woody species in Jebel El Gerrie forest reserve, Blue Nile State, Sudan. We conducted field work between December 2018 and January 2019. We used random sampling to collect vegetation data in the forest where we made a total of 90 circular sample plots (radius 17.84 m) and distributed them proportionally to the area of each of the four density-based vegetation classes of the forest i.e. high density (C1), medium density (C2), low density (C3) and crop land (C4). In each sample plot we identified all regenerating tree species and counted their regeneration frequencies. We calculated ecological metrics of regeneration frequency, density, abundance, richness, evenness, diversity and importance value index (IVI) and drew abundance rank curve. Results revealed that out of fifteen mature tree species present, natural regeneration of 8 species, which belong to 6 families, was observed. The relatively most frequently naturally regenerating and abundant species were Anogeissus leiocarpa and Combretum hartmannianum. Richness, evenness and diversity of regenerating species were 1.33, 0.82 and 1.7, respectively. One-way ANOVA (α=0.05) of mean regeneration densities disclosed that there were significant differences (F3,86=16.77, p=0.000) between C2 & C3 (p=0.000) and C2 & C4 (p=0.000). While regeneration of seven tree species were absent, two, two and four species were of good, poor and fair regeneration status, respectively. A comparison of mean density of natural regeneration with that of parent trees reflects a poor regeneration status of the forest. The study provides empirical results on the regeneration status of species and signifies the need for management interventions for species conservation and restoration, maintenance of biodiversity and sustainable production.

A forest functions classification map is an essential element for the management planning of national forests. This study was intended to make out the map at the stand level by utilizing the Forest Functions Evaluation Program(FFEP), developed by Korea Forest Research Institute. In this program, the potential of each function was evaluated in each grid cell, and then a forest functions estimation map was generated based on the optimum grid cell values in each sub-compartment unit. Finally, the program produced a forest functions classification map with consideration of the priority of the functions. The final forest functions classification map required for the national forest management planning made out overlapping those results which the rest of the forest classified referring priority functions classification map to national forest manager and classified according to the local administrative guidance and sustainable forest resources management guidance. The results indicated that the forest function classification using the FFEP program could be an efficient tool for providing the data required for national forest management planning. Also this study made a meaningful progress in the forest function classification by considering the local forest administrative guidance and sustainable forest resources management guidance.
