As one part of the ecological studies of Korean white pine plantation, a synecological survey was made on the undergrowth vegetation of Korean white pine plantations of different age class i.e., 5, 15, 25, 35, and 40 year age classes under which shrub and ground vegetation were distinctly different. And, the results are summarized as follows. 1. In shrub, the important species is Corylus heterophylla var. japonica and the dominant species in each age-class stand are as follows; 5 year-class ; Quercus mongolica, Lespedeza Maximowiczi. 15 year-class ; Corylus heterophylla var. japonica, Lespedeza Maximowiczi. 25 year-class ; Corylus heterophylla var. japonica. 35 year-class ; Corylus heterophylla var. japonica, Maackia amurensis. 40 year-class ; Corylus heterophylla var. japonica. 2. The higher the age class of the plantation are, the lower the height and the density of the shrub become. 3. Dominant species of ground-vegetation under the shrub of each age-class are as follows; 5 year-class ; Arundinella hirta var. cilia, Miscanthus purpurascens. 15 year-class ; Arundinella hirta var. ciliata, Potentilla Freyniana. 25 year-class ; Physematium manchuriense, Viola xanthopetala, Rubus craegifolius. 35 year-class ; Viola xanthopetala, Rubus crataegifolius. 45 year-class ; Viola xanthopetala, Rubus crataegifolius. 4. The standing crops of ground vegetation under the shrub were decreased with increasing age-class, which also caused the decreasing height and density and changing floristic composition of the shrub. 5. The ratio of the standing crop of root to the standing crop of shoot was increased as the age class increased. 6. The floristic composition of ground vegetation has shown a change from heliophyte to sciophytes on the sere.
Physical and mechanical properties of Korean red pine wood grown in Anmyeon-do, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do and Sogwang-ri, Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea were measured and each relationships between them were analyzed. The ring width and latewood proportion along radial axis in Korean red pine at two-regions were measured by collecting the growth core of stands with age class V and IX. The ring width in Korean red pine at two-regions decreased with increasing cambium age. The average ring widths in age class V and IX in Anmyeon-do and Sogwang-ri were 2.865 mm, 1.705 mm, 4.764 mm, and 2.228 mm, respectively. The ring widths in Anmyeon-do were measured from 23% to 40% smaller than Sogwang-ri. The latewood proportion was negatively related with the ring width of Korean red pine at two-regions. The relationship between physical and mechanical properties of specimens for compressive and bending strength tests were analyzed with simple regression analysis. The relationship between latewood proportion and oven-dry density were positive and statistically significant. The relationship between latewood proportion and mechanical properties was slightly positive and not statistically significant, except the specimens for bending strength test of Anmyeon-do. The relationship between oven-dry density and mechanical properties was positive. It was just statistically significant in the specimens of Sogwang-ri. The compressive and bending strengths of Anmyeon-do and Sogwang-ri were 51.3 MPa, 80.5 MPa, 37.7 MPa, and 63.7 MPa, respectively. The strength difference between two-regions was determined to due to difference of ring width and latewood proportion by age class.
In this study, growth changes of the diameter at breast height (DBH), height, basal area, volume, and biomass of Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc.) on a plantation were examined via long-term monitoring. In addition, this study was performed to provide the basic data for timber production in line with DBH class by comparing the growth of the relative DBH size. Growth characteristics according to DBH class were analyzed by categorizing trees into five classes based on sorted DBH rankings: class I (1%-20%; upper 20%), class II (21%-40%), class III (41%-60%), class IV (61%-80%), class V (81%-100%; lower 20%). A total class (0%-100%) was also used. Total increment and mean annual increment (MAI) were calculated using data from nine measurements taken over 39 years. Tree characteristics based on average values and stand characteristics based on unit area per hectare were examined. According to the total increments of variables, the differences in DBH, basal area, volume, and biomass among classes I-V increased over time, whereas the height difference did not continually increase. According to MAI, the maximum DBH value was 0.92 cm·yr-1 at age 23 in class I, whereas the maximum value in all trees was 0.69 cm·yr-1 at age 17. The maximum value of height MAI for class I was 0.52 m·yr-1 at age 23, whereas that for all trees was 0.49 m·yr-1 at age 20. In terms of basal area, volume, and biomass growth at tree-and stand-level, the maximum MAI of class I and all trees was not observed during the measurement period. Therefore, additional long-term monitoring data are required to determine the maximum MAI of the variables.
This study was carried out to estimate the Korean Pine stand structure such as coefficient of variation of mean DBH, number of trees and volume per ha by Weibull distribution for each age class from I to V, based on photo measurement and timber cursing in Kangwon National University Experimental Forests. The results were summarized as follows: 1) Coefficient of variation of mean DBH for each age class from I to V, which was obtained by converting DBH estimated from crown diameter by photo measurement into quadratic mean DBH, was estimated as 28.88%, 24.13%, 23.29%, 20.27%, and 18.79%, respectively. 2) Number of trees per ha of each age class by Weibull distribution was obtained as 2875, 2100, 1875, 800, and 325, respectively. 3) Volume per ha of each age class was estimated as $22.9m^3$, $66.8m^3$, $101.3m^3$, $209.6m^3$, and $266.8m^3$, respectively. 4) Therefore, aerial photographs will be helpful to estimate the stand structure effectively.
This paper was aimed to find alternatives for coping spontaneously with the changing world forest resoures and international timber markets after UNCED in 1992. The guarantee of timber resources abroad in Korea is essential and the urgent subject, because about 90% of korean forest resources are specially under III age class and young, korean forest is in the step of improvement forestry. Therefore, some strategies were proposed for the stable guarantee of overseas timber resources.
Using dynamic programming, which is one of operations research techniques, the best pathway was chosen to maximize the total harvest volume for a Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis) stand. This study was carried out in an age class III at Chuncheon National Forest, Gangwon province. That stand was assumed to apply 3 different thinning intensities of none, 30% and 50% thinnings. These thinning pathways are planned to implement two times, of thinning at 35 age and 55 age. The final cutting (rotation age) is assumed to carry out in 70 years. A growth function for Korean white pine stand was developed with forest inventory data, the volume was calculated with this growth function. As a result, the best thinning pathway for this Korean white pine stand using dynamic programming is to implement 30% at the first thinning and 50%at the second thinning.

Forest biomass estimation is essential for greenhouse gas inventories and terrestrial carbon accounting. Remote sensing allows for estimating forest biomass over a large area. This study was conducted to estimate forest biomass and to produce a forest biomass map for Muju county using forest biomass conversion table developed by field plot data from the 5th National Forest Inventory and Landsat TM-5. Correlation analysis was carried out to select suitable independent variables for developing regression models. It was resulted that the height class, crown closure density, and age class were highly correlated with forest biomass. Six regression models were used with the combination of these three stand variables and verified by validation statistics such as root mean square error (RMSE) and mean bias. It was found that a regression model with crown closure density and height class (Model V) was better than others for estimating forest biomass. A biomass conversion table by model V was produced and then used for estimating forest biomass in the study site. The total forest biomass of the Muju county was estimated about 8.8 million ton, or 128.3 ton/ha by the conversion table.

Reliable forest statistics provides important information to meet the UNFCCC. In this respect, the national forest inventory has played a crucial role to provide the reliable forest statistics for several decades. However, the previous forest statistics calculated by administrative district has not provided spatial information in a small scale. Thus, this study focused on developing models to estimate an explicit spatial distribution of forest growing stock. For this, first, stand volume model by stand types was developed using National Forest Inventory(NFI) data. Second, forest type map was integrated with this model. NFI data were used to calculate plot-level stand volume and basal area. The stand types of NFI plot including the species composition, age class, DBH class and crown density class are very crucial data to be connected with forest type map. Finally, polygonlevel stand volume map was developed with spatial uncertainty map. Average stand volume was estimated at 85.7 $m^3$/ha in the study area, and at 95% significance interval it was ranged from 79.7 $m^3$/ha to 91.8 $m^3$/ha.

Forest type map is a main forest thematic map which shows forest type, age class, diameter class and density. This map has been used as a base data in various fields such as forest policy decision-making, land suitability assessment and eco map production etc. But the existing map had many kinds of errors and no metadata because there was no standard for digital map production. On this study, we developed standard for digital forest type map production consisting of 33 unit processes including DB schema design, mapping process, quality control and metadata input process. Based on this standard, country-wide digital forest type map can be produced with consistent quality and standard metadata.
In order to understand the growth percentage of red pine, author had 207 trees cut and made stem analysis on them and there by studied and analysed volume growth percentage, bark volume percentage, diameter growth percentage and the relation between diameter growth percentage and volume growth percentage and so forth. The result was as follows. 1. The volume growth percentage decreased as the age class increased and it was about 3% at the cutting age. 2. Bark volume percentage was about 5~15% and it seemed to be about constant irrespective of the age class. 3. The diameter growth percentage gradually decreased as the age class increased and it would be constant from a certain age class on. 4. As for the relation between the diameter growth percentage and volume growth percentage, the correlation ratio showed to increase with the age class increase generally the value of b was between 2.0~3.6.
