A reduction of the response of irregular structures subjected to earthquake excitation by control devices equipped by suitable control algorithm is proposed in this paper. The control algorithm, which is used, is the pole placement one. A requirement of successful application of pole placement algorithm is a definition-selection of suitable poles (eigen-values) of controlled irregular structures. Based on these poles, the required action is calculated and applied to the irregular structure by means of control devices. The selection of poles of controlled irregular structure, is a critical issue for the success of the algorithm. The calculation of suitable poles of controlled irregular structure is proposed herein by the following procedure: a fictitious symmetrical structure is considered from the irregular structure, adding vertical elements, such as columns or shear walls, at any location where is necessary. Then, the eigen-values of symmetrical structure are calculated, and are forced to be the poles of irregular controlled structure. Based on these poles and additional damping, the new poles of the controlled irregular structure are calculated. By pole placement algorithm, the feedback matrix is obtained. Using this feedback matrix, control forces are calculated at any time during the earthquake, and are applied to the irregular structure by the control devices. This procedure results in making the controlled irregular structure to behave like a symmetrical one. This control strategy can be applied to one storey or to multi-storey irregular buildings. Furthermore, the numerical results were shown that with small amount of control force, a sufficient reduction of the response of irregular buildings is achieved.
In biological cell manipulation, manual thrust or penetration of an injection pipette into an egg is currently performed by a skilled operator, relying only on visual feedback information. Massive load of various micro injection of either genes, fluid or cells in the postgenomic era calls a more reliable and automatic micro injection system that can test hundreds of genes or cell types at a single experiment. We initiated to study cellular force sensing in zebrafish eggs as the first step for the development of a more controllable micro injection system by any inexperienced operator. Zebrafish eggs at different developmental stages were collected and an integrated biomanipulation system was employed to measure cellular force during penetrating the egg envelope, the chorion. First of all, the biomanipulation system integrated with cellular force sensing instrument is implemented to measure the penetration force of cell membranes and characterize mechanical properties of zebrafish embryo cells. Furthermore, implementation of cellular force sensing system and calibration are presented. Finally, the cellular force sensing of penetrating cell membranes at each developmental stages was experimentally performed. The results demonstrated that the biomanipulation system with force sensing capability can measure cellular force at real-time while the injection operation is undergoing. The magnitude of the measured force was in the range of several hundreds of uN. The precise real-time measurement should provide the first step forwards for the development of an automatic and reliable injection system of various materials into biological cells.

In this study, a Hardware-In-The-Loop-Simulation(HILS) system for developing a Electric-Power-Steering(EPS) system is designed. To test a EPS by HILS system, a mathematical vehicle model with a steering system model has been constructed. This mathematical model has been constructed. This mathematical model has been downloaded to the Digital-Signal-Processor(DSP) board. To realize the lateral force acting on the front wheel in a real car. the steering wheel angle sensor and vehicle velocity have been used for input signal. The force sensor has been used for a feedback signal. The full vehicle states could by simulated by the HILS system. Consequently, the HILS system could by used to analyze control-parameters of a EPS that contributes to the maneuverability and stability of a vehicle. At the same time, the HILS system can evaluate the whole performance of the vehicle-steering system. Also the HILS system could do test could not be executed in real vehicle. The HILs system will useful for developing the control logic for the EPS system.
Proprioception training has been considered a secondary method to facilitate postural control ability. This study investigated the effects of two different proprioception training methods - the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and visual feedback-based joint position and force reproduction (VF) - on postural control advancements. Sixteen healthy people volunteered for this study, and they randomly grouped two. Each group participated in the PNF and VF training for three weeks. We evaluated each subject's proprioception levels and balance ability before and after the training. We used a clinometer and electromyogram (EMG) for VF training. The joint position reproduction test was also used to evaluate the position and force aspects of the proprioception level. We analyzed the trajectory of the center of pressure (COP) while subjects were standing on the firm floor and balance board with one leg using a pressure mat. The improvement of the position aspect of the proprioception level of the VF group (4.93±4.74°) was larger than that of the PNF group (-0.43±2.08°) significantly (p=0.012). The improvement of the anterior-posterior COP velocity of the PNF group (0.01±0.01 cm/s) was larger than that of VF group(0.002±0.01 cm/s) significantly (p=0.046). Changes of position error in the PNF group (rho=0.762, p=0.028) and tibialis anterior force reproduction error in the VF group showed a significantly strong relationship with balance ability variables. These results showed that different PNF and VF have different effects on improving two aspects of proprioception and their relationship with the balance ability. Therefore, these results might be useful for selecting proprioception or balance rehabilitation considering the clinical and patients' situation.

This paper presents the feasibility for improving the ride quality of railway vehicle equipped with semi-active suspension system using magnetorheological(MR) fluid damper. In order to achieve this goal, a fifteen degree of freedom of railway vehicle model, which includes a car body, bogie frame and wheel-set is proposed to represent lateral, yaw and roll motions. The MR damper system is incorporated with the governing equation of motion of the railway vehicle which includes secondary suspension. To illustrate the effectiveness of the controlled MR dampers on railway vehicle secondary suspension system, the sky-hook control law using the velocity feedback is adopted. Computer simulation for performance evaluation is performed using Matlab. Various control performances are demonstrated under external excitation which is the creep force between wheel and rail.
By using differential force between left and right wheel, lateral motion can be controlled known as Direct Yaw-moment Control (DYC). In previous researches, DYC control is proposed to increase the stability of the vehicle, but maneuverability has not been discussed sufficiently. The car handling condition which is called the index parameter of maneuverability is dependent on the vehicle velocity and steering angle. To achieve the desired vehicle's cornering path, the car handling condition must be considered sufficiently. In this paper, the novel DYC method is proposed which gives the car handling condition regardless of the longitudinal speed. The proposed controller is based on the PI controller to feedback the curvature parameter. The controlled system shows the advantages of DYC regarding to the reference trajectory by the dual motor system. With respect to the uncontrolled model, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by numerical examples.

A mobile robot system is developed which is remotely controlled by a haptic master called ‘PHANTOM’. The mobile robot has 4 ultrasonic sensors and single CCD camera which detects the distance from a mobile robot to obstacles in the environment and sends this information to a haptic master. For more convenient remote control, haptic rendering process is performed like viscosity forces and obstacle avoidance forces. In order to show the effectiveness of the developed system, we experiment that the mobile robot runs through the maze and the time is checked to complete the path of the maze with/without the haptic information. Through this repeated experiments, haptic information proves to be useful for remote control of a mobile robot.
In this paper, analysis, design, control and prototype construction of a wearable wire-driven haptic interface called HapticPen is discussed. This device can be considered as a wire driven parallel mechanism which three wires are attached to a pen-tip. Wire tensions are provided utilizing three DC servo motors which are attached to a solid frame on the user's body. This device is designed as input as well as output device for a wearable PC. User can write letters or figures on a virtual plate in space. Pen-tip trajectory in space is calculated using motor encoders and force feedback resulting from contact between pen and virtual plate is provided for constraining the pen-tip motion onto the virtual plane that can be easily setup by arbitrary non-collinear three points in space. In this paper kinematic model, workspace analysis, application analysis, control and prototype construction of this device are presented. Preliminary experiments on handwriting in space show feasibility of the proposed device in wearable environments.

This paper presents experimental results on the energy-bounding approach to a rate-mode bilateral teleoperation control that can guarantee the robust system stability in variable time-delayed telecommunication environments. Previously, rate-mode energy bounding approach [15] was proposed and verified with experimental results using the simulated remote slave model. In this paper, a real experimental setup using an industrial robot (Denso) as a remote slave robot composed and conducted similar experiments with previous paper. In order to guarantee stability of the Denso when contacting with high impedance wall, velocity based impedance control modified by position based is used. Experimental results show that the rate-mode energy bounding approach can guarantee stable bilateral teleoperation system in the free and contact motion with variable time delay.

An intelligent steering control system is designed for the steering control of a 4 wheel drive (4WD) electric vehicles without steering mechanism, where the vehicle is assumed to have 3 degree of freedom and input-output feedback linearization is employed. Especially, a fuzzy-rule-based side force estimator is suggested to avoid uncertain highlynonlinearexpression sof relations between side forces and their factors. Also, aneural-network-based predictive compensator is additionally utilized for the vehicle model to be correctly controlled with unstructured uncertainties. The proposed overall control system is numerically shown to be robust against drastic change of the external environments.
