The deletion of the distal long arm of chromosome 1 is associated with a characteristic facial appearance and a pattern of associated malformations. Characteristic manifestations include a round face with prominent 'cupid's bow' and downturned corners of the mouth, thin vermilion borders of lips, a long upper lip with a smooth philtrum, a short and broad nose, epicanthal folds, apparently low-set ears, micrognathia, microcephaly, abnormal hands and feet, variable cardiac or genital anomalies, moderate to severe mental retardation, and growth retardation. Using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis to map precisely the deletion, we present a case of chromosome 1q44 deletion with craniofacial characteristics, multiple congenital anomalies, and growth and psychomotor retardation. In comparison with other reported cases of 1q43-44 deletion, the subject does not show hydrocephalus, seizure, syn- or polydactyly of hands, and a urogenital anomaly. However, an arachnoid cyst, pinpoint dimple on the midline of the forehead, a right-sided supernumerary nipple and auricular pit, polydactyly of the right foot, adducted thumb, and flexion restriction of the proximal interphalangeal joint with a simian line in both hands were observed additionally.
Purpose: Free flap reconstruction in the pediatric population is difficult. However, microsurgery has had remarkable success rates in children. The aim of study is to present our clinical experience using free flap for reconstruction of soft tissue defects in children and to describe long-term follow-up results. Methods: Between June 2002 and July 2010, 30 cases of pediatric reconstruction were performed with free flap. The authors analyzed several items, such as the kind of flap, associated complications, and growth problems. Results: Among the 30 cases, 21 cases were due to traffic accidents, 5 to cancer, and 4 to falls and other soft tissue defects. The lower leg and foot were the most common sites of the lesion. In the free flap operations we have done, 20 cases involved an anterolateral thigh perforator free flap, 6 a superficial circumflex iliac perforator free flap, and 4 an upper medial thigh perforator free flap. In early postoperative complications, partial necrosis was seen in 2 cases, infection in 1 case, and the hematoma in 1 case. A satisfactory success rate and functional results were achieved. Conclusion: Free flap reconstruction in children allows satisfactory function with no significant effect on growth. Free flaps are regarded as the primary choice for selective pediatric reconstructive cases.

SHORT syndrome is an extremely rare congenital condition due to a chromosomal mutation of the PIK3R1 gene found at 5q13.1. SHORT is a mnemonic representing six manifestations of the syndrome: (S) short stature, (H) hyperextensibility of joints and/or inguinal hernia, (O) ocular depression, (R) Rieger anomaly, and (T) teething delay. Other key aspects of this syndrome not found in the mnemonic include lipodystrophy, triangular face with dimpled chin (progeroid facies, commonly referred to as facial gestalt), hearing loss, vision loss, insulin resistance, and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). 3q duplication syndrome is rare syndrome that occurs due to a gain of function mutation found at 3q25.31-33 that presents with a wide array of manifestations including internal organ defects, genitourinary malformations, hand and foot deformities, and mental disability. We present a case of a 2 year and 3 month old male with SHORT syndrome and concurrent 3q duplication syndrome. The patient presented at birth with many of the common manifestations of SHORT syndrome such as bossing of frontal bone of skull, triangular shaped face, lipodystrophy, micrognathia, sunken eyes, and thin, wrinkled skin (progeroid appearance). Additionally, he presented with findings associated with 3q duplication syndrome such as cleft palate and cryptorchidism. Although there is no specific treatment for these conditions, pediatricians should focus on referring patients to various specialists in order to treat each individual manifestation.
The global population has increased with swift urbanization in developing countries, and it is likely to result in a high demand for animal-derived protein-rich foods. Animal farming has been constantly affected by various stressful conditions, which can be categorized into physical, environmental, nutritional, and biological factors. Such conditions could be exacerbated by banning on the use of antibiotics as a growth promoter together with a pandemic situation including, but not limited to, African swine fever, avian influenza, and foot-and-mouth disease. To alleviate these pervasive tension, various immunomodulants have been suggested as alternatives for antibiotics. Various studies have investigated how stressors (i.e., imbalanced nutrition, dysbiosis, and disease) could negatively affect nutritional physiology in chickens. Importantly, the immune system is critical for host protective activity against pathogens, but at the same time excessive immune responses negatively affect its productivity. Yet, comprehensive review articles addressing the impact of such stress factors on the immune system of chickens are scarce. In this review, we categorize these stressors and their effects on the immune system of chickens and attempt to provide immunomodulants which can be a solution to the aforementioned problems facing the chicken industry.

Objective: The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the effects of once-a-day milk feeding on growth performance and routine behavior of preweaning dairy calves. Methods: At 22nd day of age, twenty-four Holstein calves were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups (n = 12/treatment) based on milk feeding frequency (MF): i) 3 L of milk feeding two times a day; ii) 6 L of milk feeding once a day. The milk feeding amount was reduced to half for all calves between 56 and 60 days of age and weaning was done at 60 days of age. To determine the increase in weight and structural measurements, each calf was weighed and measured at 3 weeks of age and then at weaning. The daily behavioral activity of each calf was assessed from the 22nd day of age till weaning (60th day of age) through Nederlandsche Apparatenfabriek (NEDAP) software providing real-time data through a logger fitted on the calf's foot. Results: There was no interaction (p≥0.17) between MF and sex of the calves for routine behavioral parameters, body weight and structural measurements. Similarly, there was no effect of MF on routine behavioral parameters, body weight and structural measurements. However, the sex of the calves affected body weight gain in calves. Male calves had 27% greater total body weight and average daily gain than female calves. There was no effect of the sex of the calves on behavioral measurements. Collectively, in the current study, no negative effects of a once-a-day milk feeding regimen were found on routine behavioral and growth parameters of preweaning calves in group housing. Conclusion: Once-a-day milk feeding can be safely adopted in preweaning calves from 22nd day of age.
The osteochondroma is a cartilage-capped exostosis resulting from an error in the regulation of normal chondrocyte proliferation and maturation that leads to a normal bone growth. Although exostoses are benign lesions, they are often associated with characteristic progressive skeletal deformities and may cause clinical symptoms. Surgery can prevent progression and provide correction for certain deformities. We experienced a rare case of solitary osteochondroma in a 21-year-old male which caused the valgus deformity of the ankle.

Perkinsus sp. has been identified as responsible organism for the decrease in Manil clam production along the west and south coast of Korea. Monthly investigation on infection intensity and pathology of Perkinsus infected Manila clam population was carried out in Komsoe Bay located in the west coast during February and December 1999. About one hundred clams were collected each month for the analysis. Infected clams were incubated in fluid thioglycollate media over a week, stained with iodine solution, digested with 2M NaOH and the number of Perkinsus present in an individual recorded. Histological slides were also prepared from infected clams and their pathologic symptoms were examined using a microscope. Trophozoites of Perkinsus sp. were dominantly distributed on gills and epithelia of digestive glands however a few numbers could be detected at siphons and foot tissues. Heavily infected clams often exhibited white spots on mantle and foot tissues due to the inflammatory reaction of the hemocytes, forming nodules. Trophozoites were also found along the connective tissues of follicles during spawning season indicating that Perkinsus sp. may disturb reproduction of the clam. Total number of Perkinsus sp. in an individual clam varied from none to 9, 550, 000 with a monthly mean of 279, 663 to 2, 198, 558 during the course of study. The number of Perkinsus sp. in the clam was found to lowest durin July and August when unusually low salinity was recorded in this area due to the heavy rain. Highest monthly infection intensity in terms of total number of Perkinsus sp. i clam was observed in February, when water temperature recorded as lowest during the study. Small size of clams with shell length of ten mm or less were not infected with Perkinsus sp. It was concluded that Perkinsus infection in Manila clam is in pa controlled by changes in salinity and clam growth; low salinity environment minimize infection intensity while tile clams get more Perkinsus as they grow.
Recently, the demand for marine leisure industry is rapidly increasing due to the five-day work week and the per capita income approaching US $ 30,000. In particular, the Republic of Korea is surrounded by the sea on three sides and is composed of 3,150 islands and coastline. As shipbuilding infrastructure is abundant and the government is expected to actively support policies as a new growth engine, leisure boat furniture industry is expected to grow rapidly along with leisure boat manufacturing. Therefore, in this paper, after understanding the leisure boat (yacht) and analyzing the requirements of yacht furniture, we proposed a beautiful yacht furniture design that is lightweight, durable and safe using a 120-foot super yacht that can best show the characteristics of yacht furniture using wood bending technology and color variation of woods.
Floristic composition and vertical distribution of Mt. Daedun (western slope) were investigated from 1985 to 1986. The results are as follows; 108 families, 346 genera, 511 species, 2 subspecies, 75 varieties, 5 forma or 593 taxa including 77 cultivars. The floral data showed the ecological characteristics such as the value 346 in Fisher's Index, H-D1-H5 in biological type, 10.9% in urban index of naturalized plants and 60.5% in erect form growth form. Based on the physiognomy and population density of dominant tree species the forest vegetation of Mt. Daedun (western slope) was classified into 5 types; Quercus mongolica forest and Q. variabilis forest at 800m above, Carpinys laxiflora forest and Acer mono forest at 700m to 800m and Sapium japonicum forest at 500m to 800m in altitude. And Lindera erythrocarpa forest and zelkova serrata forest are widely distributed at 400m to 800m in altityde along valley and at mountain foot area.
