Manufacturing facility for non-alcoholic drink, the parts of the food industry, disposes wastewater which includes high organic concentration and low nitrogen, phosphorus concentration. For this kind of wastewater, the treatment plant consists mainly of aerobic reactor and chemical coagulation process. And sand-filter or activated carbon process is normally installed further. However, aerobic reactor must have long HRT to treat high concentration of organic contaminant included in this wastewater, so the large site area is required. And settling tank which is normally applied for wastewater treatment facility has some problems such as water quality degradation caused by the sludge spill. To solve these problems, we applied MBR system for the wastewater. And the MBR pilot plant was installed nearby the wastewater treatment facility of W food factory and operated during long term to evaluate treatment efficiency. This plant was operated about 3 months and than the result was 97% of organic removal rate on conditions of flow rate $20m^3/day$, HRT 29 hr, recycle 4Q. However, contaminant removal ratio of bio-reactor decreased and TMP of membrane increased rapidly on more conditions.

Food wastewater eluted from the three-stage methane fermentation system developed in this lab showed high concentrations of TCOD, BOD, T-N and T-P. Because the effluent of biological filter chamber (BFC) still had high concentration of nitrogen and organic material, the effluent was treated with algal periphyton system using algae. The removal rates of COD, T-N and T-P wer 96, 98 and 91%, respectively, in this system. The grown algae could digested byy waterfleas using the ecological food chain system. Food wastewater is better than algal culture medium for growth of waterflea, Moima Macrocopa. During 12days, the individual of waterflea increased to 180 in the food wastewater containing a T-N concentration of 150 mg/ ${\ell}$.

This study performed to extract operation factors of major organic wastes, which were food wastes and waste activated sludge generated in industries in order to use them as a substrate for bio-H2 production. According to the results of experimental analysis for hydrogen production capacity by various organic concentrations, the hydrogen production yield was the highest at 80 g/L, and the efficiency was improved by the pretreatment of waste activated sludge (acid treatment, alkali treatment). Hydrogen production efficiency was improved by mixing food wastes and waste activated sludge if waste activated sludge was below than 30%, however, it was decreased when it was more than 50%. The impacts of heavy metals on the hydrogen production shows that the inhibition level depends on the concentration of Cr, Zn, and Cu, Fe was able to enhance the hydrogen production.
Food compost, having a higher organic contents than soil, could be an alternative material to prevent the proliferation of heavy metals contamination in soil. In this study we used a convection-dispersion local equilibrium sorption model(CDE) and a two-site non-equilibrium sorption model to find the effects on the adsorption and transportation of Pb by mixing food compost with soil and we also tried to find the effect of velocity and concentration of the injected solution on the characteristics of Pb. We measured Pb concentrations in injection-liquid and in effluent, and then applied them to CXTFIT program. As a result of column experiments, some parameters(D, R, ${\beta}$, ${\omega}$) used in two-site non-equilibrium adsorption model were obtained. Characteristics of Pb adsorption and transport were analyzed using the parameters(D, R, ${\beta}$, ${\omega}$) obtained from the CXTFIT program, We could know that mixed soil with food compost showed a higher adsorption capacity from the retardation factor(R) calculated from the breakthrough curve(BTCs) of Pb. Rs of soil and mixed soil are 20.45, 37.45 respectively, indicating that the adsorption and the transportation characteristics could be accessed quantitatively by using of two-site non-equilibrium adsorption model.

Food waste leachate (FWL) is a serious pollutant waste coming from the food waste recycling facilities in Korea. FWL has a high organic matter content and high COD to nitrogen (COD/N) ratio, which can disturb efficient methane production in the anaerobic digestion of FWL. In the present study a microalga, Clorella vulgaris (C.V), was used as co-substrate for the FWL anaerobic digestion in order to supply nutrients, decrease the COD/N ratio and increase its methane yield. Different co-digestion mixtures (COD/N ratios) were studied by using biochemical methane potential test and modified Gompertz equation for kinetic study. Mixed substrate of FWL and C. vulgaris in the co-digestion clearly showed more the biomethane yield than the sole substrates. The maximum methane production, 827.7 mL-$CH_4$/g-VS added, was obtained for COD/N ratio of 24/1, whereas the highest improvement of methane yield was found for COD/N ratio of 15/1.
In this study, we investigated coagulants such as polyaluminum chloride (PACl) and ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$) and the combination of a coagulant and powdered activated carbon (PAC) for the removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from fish processing effluent to reduce membrane fouling in microfiltration. The efficiency of each pretreatment was investigated through analyses of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm ($UVA_{254}$). Membrane flux and silt density index (SDI) analyses were performed to evaluate membrane fouling; molecular weight distributions (MWD) and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (FEEM) spectroscopy were analyzed to assess DOM characteristics. The results demonstrated that $FeCl_3$ exhibited higher DOC and $UVA_{254}$ removals than PACl for food processing effluent and a combination of $FeCl_3$ and PAC provided comparatively better results than simple $FeCl_3$ coagulation for the removal of DOM from fish processing effluent. This study suggests that membrane fouling could be minimized by proper pretreatment of food processing effluent using a combination of coagulation ($FeCl_3$) and adsorption (PAC). Analyses of MWD and FEEM revealed that the combination of $FeCl_3$ and PAC was more efficient at removing hydrophobic and small-sized DOM.

To develop the treatment process of swine wastewater using Rhodopseudomonas palustris KK14 with high utilizable ability of organic acids, some operating conditions were investigated and optimized in flask-scale and laboratory-scale reactors. The optimal operating conditions in photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) reactor of semi-continuous type were obtained at HRT 6 day, 5% (v/v/day) seeding rate of PSB sludge and 10% (v/v/day) returning rate of PSB return sludge. Under the above operating condition, COD level of the wastewater (initial COD: 10 g/l) was reduced to about 1.7 g/l after 4 days treatment and MLSS was held constant at $4{\sim}5\;g$ per liter. In laboratory-scale process consisted of 5.2 l anaearobic digestion reactor and 15 l PSB reactor, the total removal rates of COD and BOD were increased to 95% and 96% by the continuous operation for 5.36 days, respectively, showing $3kg\;COD/m^3/day$ COD loading rate and 1.1 Kg COD/Kg MLSS/day sludge loading rate in PSB reactor. The offensive odor was considerably removed through the treatment process of swine wastewater.
This study was conducted to evaluate the treatment efficiency including reaction kinetics and hydraulic characteristics of food processing wastewater by using an ejector-type aeration system (ETAS) in activated sludge process. The oxygen transfer efficiency in ETAS can be changed in accordance with the depth of reactor. However, the optimum air velocity was found less than 1.82 m/hr at a superficial liquid velocity of 634 m/hr. The ETAS process showed higher organic material removal efficiency than that of the existing activated sludge process under hydraulic detention time 6 to 12 hours. This process, which can maintain MLVSS highly, is able to have high organic material removal efficiency at short HRT and deal with variable organic material loading.
Submerged Membrane Bio-Reacter(SMBR) process was used to food wastewater treatment. From laboratory pilot-scale experiment data, it was confirmed that this process was very effective process for organics, suspended solid, and N, P treatment. It was found that BOD and COD removal rate were obtained 90% and 92%, respectively, for 150 days operation. Organics loading rate did not affect to the removal efficiency because MLSS concentration in aerobic tank was highly maintained. IN the case of first reactor operated with anoxic and second reactor operated as aerobic, T-N, T-P removal rate were obtained 93% and 95%, respectively. It was shown that removal efficiency could be maintained stable due to the complete removal of SS and sludge production decreased with increasing of sludge retention time.
The paper presents results of qualitative analysis of non-regulated organic pollutants in municipal wastewater and treated municipal wastewater with flocculation, ozone and UV process using GC-MS. The majority of the pollutants in the influent of the municipal wastewater treatment facility were either food related or due to the diffuse discharge from products used both in households and in industry. In the case of biological treatment process removed some organic pollutants effectively. But some organic pollutants were not removed with biological treatment. Thus, additional steps to improve the quality of effluent municipal wastewater will require a more rigorous control of consumer products used in household and municipal wastewater process using advanced treatment processs. The obtained data contributed to the evaluation of pollutants discharges to the ecosystem as well as to the characterization of pollution sources in the basin.
