Weight loss effect through traditional Korean instruments

  • Most modern adults are overweight or obese. Health services are troubling to overcome the large number of individuals in need of weight loss. Music therapy is emerging as a new option. Among various music therapy methods, it studied various treatments through Korean traditional music, and it is thought that Korean traditional music is a good therapy for diet. The present review focused on find the most useful condition for weight control by using Korean traditional music. National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts measured the dB of Korean traditional music, In the next, listen to other dB's music while eating and compared energy intake, water intake, duration of meals, number of servings, number of bites, eating rate (bites per minute), and bite size (grams). As a result of the exhibits, differences in food intake were also found in the difference of dB. 60 dB of music showed a decrease in energy intake. It suggests that Korean traditional music belonging to 60 dB brings weight loss effect. As a result, the effect of weight loss is shown by use Korean traditional music. However, future studies should be performed to reduce the energy intake by increasing the exposure period to Korean traditional music

In silico discovery and evaluation of phytochemicals binding mechanism against human catechol-O-methyltransferase as a putative bioenhancer of L-DOPA therapy in Parkinson disease

  • Levodopa (L-DOPA) therapy is normally practised to treat motor pattern associated with Parkinson disease (PD). Additionally, several inhibitory drugs such as Entacapone and Opicapone are also cosupplemented to protect peripheral inactivation of exogenous L-DOPA (~80%) that occurs due to metabolic activity of the enzyme catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT). Although, both Entacapone and Opicapone have U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval but regular use of these drugs is associated with high risk of side effects. Thus, authors have focused on in silico discovery of phytochemicals and evaluation of their effectiveness against human soluble COMT using virtual screening, molecular docking, drug-like property prediction, generation of pharmacophoric property, and molecular dynamics simulation. Overall, study proposed, nine phytochemicals (withaphysalin D, withaphysalin N, withaferin A, withacnistin, withaphysalin C, withaphysalin O, withanolide B, withasomnine, and withaphysalin F) of plant Withania somnifera have strong binding efficiency against human COMT in comparison to both of the drugs i.e., Opicapone and Entacapone, thus may be used as putative bioenhancer in L-DOPA therapy. The present study needs further experimental validation to be used as an adjuvant in PD treatment.

혈액투석 환자의 일상식품군 섭취량에 따른 혈청 인, 칼륨 농도의 상관성 분석 (Association of food intake with serum levels of phosphorus and potassium in hemodialysis patients)

  • 본 연구는 서울특별시에 소재한 한양대학교병원에서 혈액투석을 시행중인 만성 콩팥병 환자를 대상으로 일상식품군의 섭취량과 혈청 인, 칼륨 농도와의 상관관계를 살펴봄으로써 혈액투석 중의 합병증 예방 및 관리에 필요한 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 1) 본 연구 대상자는 총 48명 (남: 20명, 여: 28명)으로 평균 혈청 인 농도는 $4.50{\pm}1.52mg/dl$, 평균 혈청 칼륨 농도는 $4.74{\pm}0.73mEq/l$였다. 전체 대상자 중 고인산혈증을 보인 환자는 45.8%, 고칼륨혈증을 보인 환자는 35.4%였다. 2) 식이요법 실천율은 남자가 여자보다 유의하게 높았고, 대상자 중 약물치료만 시행하는 군보다 약물치료에 식이요법을 병행하는 군에서 혈청 인 농도가 유의하게 낮았다. 3) 투석기간에 따른 혈청 칼륨 농도는 5년 미만 투석자보다 5년 이상 투석자에서 유의하게 높았다. 4) 백미를 섭취한 군이 잡곡을 섭취하는 군보다 혈청 인, 칼륨 농도가 유의하게 낮았다. 감자와 고구마의 섭취량이 증가할수록 혈청 칼륨 농도가 유의하게 높았으며, 일주일에 3회를 초과하여 섭취한 군의 경우 혈청 칼륨 농도가 정상범위를 넘어섰다. 5) 생선의 섭취량이 증가할수록 혈청 칼륨 농도가 유의하게 높았으며, 특히 일주일에 3회를 초과하여 섭취한 군의 경우 혈청 칼륨농도가 정상범위를 넘어섰다. 콩자반과 두유의 섭취량이 증가할수록 혈청 인 농도가 유의하게 높았으며, 콩자반의 경우 일주일에 1회 이상, 두유의 경우 일주일에 3회 보다 많이 섭취한 군의 경우 혈청 인 농도가 정상범위를 넘어섰다. 6) 채소의 섭취량이 증가할수록 혈청 칼륨 농도가 유의하게 높았으며, 특히 고칼륨 채소의 섭취가 많을수록 혈청 칼륨 농도가 유의하게 더 높았다. 버섯의 섭취량이 증가할수록 혈청 칼륨 농도가 유의하게 높았으며, 일주일에 3회 보다 많이 섭취한 군의 경우 혈청 칼륨 농도가 정상범위를 넘어섰다. 7) 잡곡과 두유의 섭취는 혈청 인 농도와 유의한 양의 상관관계를 보였으며, 투석기간, 잡곡, 감자, 생선, 고칼륨 채소의 섭취는 혈청 칼륨 농도와 양의 상관관계를 보였다. 한편 쌀의 섭취는 혈청 칼륨 농도와 유의한 음의 상관관계를 보였다. 이와 같은 결과를 통하여 혈액투석 환자들의 식이요법 실천은 혈청 인 농도 조절에 긍정적인 효과가 있었으며, 투석기간이 길어질수록 혈청 칼륨 농도가 높아지는 것으로 보아 지속적인 식이요법이 필수적인 것으로 생각된다. 일상식품군의 섭취와 혈청 인, 칼륨 농도와의 상관관계에서 잡곡의 섭취는 혈청 인, 칼륨 농도와 유의한 양의 상관관계를, 백미의 섭취는 혈청 칼륨 농도와 유의한 음의 상관관계를 보여주었다. 이를 통해 잡곡의 섭취를 줄이고 백미를 섭취하는 것이 혈청 인, 칼륨 농도 감소에 긍정적인 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 두유의 섭취는 혈청 인 농도와 유의한 양의 상관관계를 보였으며, 감자 및 생선의 섭취는 혈청 칼륨 농도와 유의한 양의 상관관계를 보였다. 정상 혈청 인, 칼륨 농도의 유지를 위해서는 이들 식품의 1인 1회 섭취 분량을 하루에 0.5회 이하로 나누어 섭취하되, 일주일에 3회를 초과하여 섭취하지 않을 것을 권장한다. 한편 고칼륨 채소의 섭취는 혈청 칼륨 농도와 유의한 양의 상관관계를 보였으며, 다른 채소 섭취에 비해 혈청 칼륨 농도를 정상범위 이상으로 증가시키는 것으로 보아 가급적 섭취를 제한할 것을 권장한다.

대전 지역 주민의 건강 향상을 위한 식습관 및 건강상태, 질병 대처 방안에 관한 기초자료와 교육 요구도 조사 (Survey on Food Habits, Health Condition and Precaution for Disease for the Health Improvement of Community People in Taejon)

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate some problems related to health and to identify citizen's needs related to nutrition education program. The data were analyzed by using $x^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA and multiple range test. The food habits score was 70.0 of 100. The score of man was 69.0, while that of woman was 72.6. Since woman's food habit was better than man, education to man is more needed. Man's BMI was 22.5 and that of woman was 21.4. W/H ratio of man was 0.85 and that of woman was 0.80. BMI and W/H ratio increased as age increases. Systolic blood pressure was 123.5mmHg and diastolic blood pressure was 83.2mmHg. All age groups need the education of blood pressure control. Since subjects who did regular exercise were only 26.3%, these community people needed more regular exercise, specially woman. It turned out that subjects were afraid of cancer, hypertension, cerebral vascular diseases which are related with food habits. The disease or symptom having the highest mobility were dental disease, gastroenteric disorder, headache and constipation. They asked for counselling about health, diet therapy, protection methods of disease and menu planning etc. The program of education for health and good food habits should be developed according to subjects's age, sex, education etc. These results showed primary needs on the curriculum of citizen's education program for enhancing health. In addition, we suggest the research on the practical curriculum of nutrition education program.

Arterial stiffness index, physical activity and food and nutrient intake: cross-sectional study in adults aged 40 years and older

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate arterial stiffness index, physical activity, and food and nutrient intake in middle-aged adults over 40 years when the incidence of cardiovascular disease begins to increase. Methods: This study included 106 subjects (48 males and 58 females) aged between 40 and 64 years. The arterial stiffness index (brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity [baPWV], and ankle-brachial index [ABI]) were measured using a blood pressure pulse wave testing device. Physical activity was assessed using the Korean version of the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire, and food and nutrient intake was calculated using the Food Frequency Questionnaire. Results: The mean age of the subjects was 54.4 years. Although the ABI of the subjects was within the normal range, they were divided into tertiles to compare physical activity and food and nutrient intake. In males, the time spent on moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was significantly higher in T3 (600.6 min/week) than in T1 (304.4 min/week). In females, the time spent in sedentary behavior was significantly lower in T3 (294.5 min/week) than in T1 (472.1 min/week). In addition, the frequency of fish consumption was significantly higher in T3 (1.27 frequency/day) than in T1 (0.64 frequency/day) in females. Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and ω-3 fatty acid intake, adjusted for energy intake, were significantly positively correlated with ABI (r = 0.200 and r = 0.218, respectively). Conclusions: High MVPA (in males), low sedentary behavior (in females), and PUFA and ω-3 fatty acid intake through fish consumption may be associated with low peripheral artery stiffness. Therefore, arteriosclerosis can be prevented through physical activity and proper dietary therapy.

방송매체에 나타난 식품영양정보 모니터링 (The Monitoring of Information about Food and Nutrition Presented Throughout Various Television Brodeast Media)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze information about food and nutrition presented through the television broadcast media, with the aim of finding out the optimal communication method for supplying the general public with accurate information. To perform this study, a total of sixteen monitoring people were recruited and trained before and during the study. Five domestic TV channels were selected to be monitored, and the total monitoring period was six months. For maximum efficiency, the monitoring people were assigned to 8 teams. The results of the present study can be summarized as follows : First, the total reported cases of information about food and nutrition were 237, of which about 30% were judged appropriate and 70% as inappropriate. Second, classifying each case by program type, information programs made up the highest portion at 82 cases (34.6%), cooking programs accounted for 76 cases (32.1%), news programs for 40 cases (16.9%), and entertainment programs for 7 cases (3.0%). The analysis showed that the greatest amount of incorrect information was found in dramas, followed by entertainment, information, cooking and news programs. Third, classifying each case by theme of contents monitored, meal preparation and cookery made up the highest portion at 86 cases (36.3%), foods accounted for 67 cases (28.3%), disease and diet-therapy for 40 cases (16.9%), eating habits for 31 cases (13.1%), and diet and fitness for 13 cases (5.5%). Incorrect information was conveyed most often on the themes of food habits, foods, disease and diet-therapy, cookery, and diet and fitness. Fourth, classifying each case by channel, Cable TV had the highest frequency at 72 cases (30.4%), MBC had 51 cases (21.5%), SBS had 43 cases (18.1%), KBS1 had 41 cases (17.3%) and KBS2 had 30 cases (12.7%). In conclusion, systematic monitoring should be continued to reduce the frequency of incorrect information being broadcast and to help ensure that accurate information is conveyed to the general public. Moreover, there should be a system of cooperation to provide information to help broadcast production teams establish a strategic program. Finally, it is essential to organize an advisory team by promoting links between the mass media and specialists in the field, and to develop an educational program on nutrition to help ensure the communication of accurate information on food and nutrition. 열결(列缺).려구에 대한 용량별 He-Ne 레이저 침 조사(照射)가 고지방(高脂肪) 식이(食餌)로 유발된 고지혈증(高脂血症) 백서(白鼠)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effects of Invasive Low Level Laser Acupuncture Therapy(LLLAT) depending on capacity at LU7+LR5 on the Hyperlipemia Rats Induced by High Fat Diet)

  • Objectives : This research was performed to investigate the effect of invasive low level laser acupuncture therapy(LLLAT) at Yolgyol+yogu(LU7+LR5) on weight gain, food intake, food efficiency, lipid metabolism and liver function in hyperlipemia rats. Methods : Experimental groups were divided into high fat diet cup(Control group), high fat diet and 15 mW/5 min LLLAT at LU7+LR5(15 mW/5 min group), 15 mW/10 min LLLAT at LU7+LR5(15 mW/10 min group), 30 mW/5 min LLLAT at LU7+LRS(30 mW/5 min group), 30 mW/10 min LLLAT at LU7+LR5(30 mW/10 min group). LLLAT was treated at the 15,30mW-5,10min once a 2day during 5 weeks. Results : Body weight was decreased significantly in 30 mW/s min group and 30 mW/10 min group compared with control group. Food intake was decreased significantly in 15 mW/5 min group and 15 mW/10 min group compared with control group. Food efficiency was decreased significantly in 30 mW/10 min group compared with control group. In the lipid metabolism, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and free fatty acid were increased significantly in 15 mW/5 min group and 30 mW/10 min group compared with control group. LDL-cholesterol was increased in 30 mW/10 min group and phospholipids was decreased significantly in all experimental group compared with control group. triglyceride was not showed significant result in all experimental group. In the liver function, AST was not showed significant result in all experimental group, ALT and ALP were increased significantly in 30 mW/10 min group, ALP was decreased in 30 mW/5 min group compared with control group. Conclusions : LLLAT at LU7 and LR5 can manage hyperlipemia by controlling body weight, food intake, food efficiency ratio and lipid metabolism.

성인 남성의 혈압과 식이섭취 실태 및 기타 환경 요인과의 관계에 대한 사례연구 (Correlations among Blood Pressures, Dietary Intakes and Other Environmental Factors in Korean Adult Males)

  • The present survey was designed to investigate correlations among blood pressure, nutritional intakes, and various environmental factors in Korean adult males, and to observe the difference in dietary intakes between hypertensive patients and normotensive subjects. Two hundred forty-three adult men from Seoul and rural areas were interviewed about their food intakes, dietary patterns, food habits, and general environmental factors from December 20, 1982 to February 15, 1983. Their dietary intakes were surveyed by means of 24-hour recall diet method. Dietary score card was used in order to evaluate the quality of routine diet of the subject. Variables of environmental factors and factors related to hypertension were expressed as percentage, and the differences in nutrient intake and food score of each sub-group were examined by means of t-test. Correlation of all the variables were analyzed by Pearsons Correlation Coefficient. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. 38% of the subjects were between the ages of 40~49, and about one-half of the subjects were middle or high school graduates. 28% of the subjects earned 210, 000~350, 000 Won per month, and income distribution was almost identical to that of the urban population of Korea. 2. There was more overweight or obese found in the hypertensive patients than in the normotensive subjects. About 40% of the hypertensive patients reported a family history of hypertension, and their knowledge about hypertension was rather poor, but slightly better than the normotensive subjects. The patient group had less adherence to smoking and alcohol compared with the normotensive subjects, but no difference was observed in coffee drinking. The mean value of the blood pressure for the normotensive subjects was 127/86mmHg and 175/109mmHg for the hypertensive group. 3. Nutrient intake for the hypertensive group was lower for most of nutrients than in the healthy group. Hypertensive patients on diet therapy consumed less calories and carbohydrates compared with those who do not follow diet therapy. 4. There was no difference intake of these food groups between patients and the healthy group. Food score was strongly related to consumption of animal protein, saturated fats, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin A, Riboflavin, and Vitamin C, which are prone to be deficient in the typical Korean diet. 5. Blood pressure had a strong positive correlation with age, body weight, and socioeconomic level. In addition, monthly income was positively related with age and education level. 6. Three was a positive relationship between blood pressure and consumption of vegetable protein, and a negative relationship with consumption of Calories, Carbohydrates, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Niacin, and Vitamin C. Animal protein intake increased as income and education levels increased, but this tendency was opposite for carbohydrates. In summary, nutritional intakes are strongly correlated with various environmental factors and the level of blood pressure. There was no difference between normotensive and hypertensive subjects with respect to the quality of food consumed except restricting energy and carbohydrate in the patient group.

작물에 함유된 Phytoestrogen의 특성과 생리활성 (Biological Activities of Phytoestrogens in Plant and Foodstuff)

  • Phytoestrogens are oestrogenic compounds found in plants and consist of isoflavones, lignans, and coumestans. The structural similarity of phytoestrogens to endogenous oestrogens has promoted the hypothesis that phytoestrogens exert hormonal or anti-hormonal effects relevant to the risk of hormone-dependent disease and/or their suitability as a dietary alternative to hormone replacement therapy. Epidemiological studies suggest that food stuffs containing phytoestrogens may have a beneficial role in protecting against a number of chronic disease and conditions. It is thought that these estrogen-like compounds may protect against chronic diseases, such as hormone-dependent cancers, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Furthermore, phytoestrogens are used as a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy and to reduce menopausal symptoms. Phytoestrogens are considered good candidates for use in natural therapies and as chemopreventive agents in adults. However safe and efficacious levels have yet to be established.

영유아 급성 설사의 영양 공급: 탈수 치료 후 연령별 식이요법을 중심으로 (Nutritional Support for Acute Diarrhea in Children: Focused on Age-appropriate Diet Therapy after Rehydration)

  • The mainstay in the management of mild to moderately dehydrated children is fast rehydration by using hypotonic ORS (oral rehydration solution) and complete resumption of normal diet, including lactose-containing formula after 4 hours rehydration. Since the majority of young children with uncomplicated acute diarrhea will tolerate large amounts of undiluted non-human milk, withholding food and milk from children during diarrhea is not recommended anymore, regarding time to resolution and diarrhea control. In addition, routine dilution of milk and routine use of lactose-free formula are not necessary after fast ORS therapy. Breastfed infants and children fed with solid foods may safely continue receiving their usual diets during diarrhea instead of gradual reintroduction of feeding. However, young infants or children with severe diarrhea or malnutrition should be carefully treated under supervision if fed with lactose containing, non-human milk exclusively.
