Brown algal extracts have long been used as feed supplements to promote health of farm animals. Here, we show new molecular insights in to the mechanism of action of a fucose containing polymer (FCP) rich fraction from the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum using the Caenorhabditis elegans-Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14 infection model. FCP enhanced survival of C. elegans against pathogen stress, correlated with up-regulation of key immune response genes such as: lipases, lysozyme (lys-1), saponin-like protein (spp-1), thaumatin-like protein (tlp-1), matridin SK domain protein (msk-1), antibacterial protein (abf-1), and lectin family protein (lfp). Further, FCP caused down regulation of P. aeruginosa quorum sensing genes: (lasI, lasR, rhlI, and rhlR), secreted virulence factors (lipase, proteases, and elastases) and toxic metabolites (pyocyanin, hydrogen cyanide, and siderophore). Biofilm formation and motility of pathogenic bacteria were also greatly attenuated when the culture media were treated with FCP. Interestingly, FCP failed to mitigate the pathogen stress in skn-1, daf-2, and pmk-1 mutants of C. elegans. This indicated that, FCP treatment acted on the regulation of fundamental innate immune pathways, which are conserved across the majority of organisms including humans. This study suggests the possible use of FCP, a seaweed component, as a functional food source for healthy living.
Several our studies have focused recently on the mass production of the freshwater Cladoceran Moina macrocopa which can substitute Artemia nauplii for the culture of larval marin fish. A 6 weeks experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of enrichment on the fatty acid composition of Moina macrocopa through feeding Schizochytrium sp. containing highly unsaturated fatty acids and to study the impacts of n-3-HUFA enriched Moina on improving survival rate and fatty acid compostion of larval rockfish Sebastes schlegeli. After feeding for 6 weeks, the Moina-fed fry resulted in a higher survival rate of 99.2% compared to the Artemia-fed fry 12.8%. In addition, the Moina-fed fry had the fast growth rate 45.6mm compare to the Artemia-fed fry 25.7 mm at the end of the experiment. The Moina-fed fry showed significantly higher level of 16.47% DHA than their Artemia-fed fry counterparts of the level of 3.97% with respect to DHA. PL, the cell membrane components in living food organisms, constituted 63.8% of the Moina, which was significantly higher than in the 40.1% of the Artemia. The present study indicate that Moina macrocopa can be used as Artemia substitute and improving the survival rate rockfish larvae through enchriment Schizochytrium sp.
Carbon cycling and productivity within Weno Island of Micronesia enclosed by the coral reef may be likely self-maintained and insignificantly affected by the open ocean. Therefore, it is important to understand the role of the mangrove known as providing the organic matter and habitats for many organisms in this enclosed area. In order to trace the nutritional source of fauna (mostly invertebrates) in the mangrove forest of Weno island, we analyzed the fatty acid (FA) and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of potential nutritional sources (mangrove leaf & pneumatophore, seagrass leaf & root, surface sediment, and particulate organic matter (POM) in water) and consumers (4 gastropods and anomura). The mangrove and seagrass contained the abundance of 18:2${\omega}$6, and 18:3${\omega}$3, whereas FAs associated with phytoplankton and bacteria were accounted for a high proportion in the surface sediment and POM. FA composition of consumers was found to be similar to those of the surface sediment, mangrove, and seagrass. These were also confirmed through the mixing model of stable isotope for contribution of nutritional sources to consumers. Overall results with the feeding types of investigated mangrove fauna indicate that investigated mangrove fauna obtained their nutrition from the various sources, i.e. the mangrove for Littorina cf. scabra, the microalgae for Strombus sp., and omnivorous Pagurus sp. and Terebralia cf. palustris. However, it is obvious that the nutrition of most species living in the mangrove ecosystem is highly dependent on the mangrove, either directly or indirectly. More detail food-web structure and function of the mangrove ecosystem would be established with the analysis of additional fauna and flora.
Pathogenic Naegleria fowleri, Acanthamoeba castellanii, and Acanthamoeba polyphaga, are distributed worldwide. They are causative agents of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis or acanthamoebic keratitis in humans, respectively. Trophozoites encyst in unfavorable environments, such as exhausted food supply and desiccation. Until recently, the method of N. fowleri encystation used solid non-nutrient agar medium supplemented with heat-inactivated Escherichia coli; however, for the amoebic encystment of Acanthamoeba spp., a defined, slightly modified liquid media is used. In this study, in order to generate pure N. fowleri cysts, a liquid encystment medium (buffer 1) modified from Page's amoeba saline was applied for encystation of N. fowleri. N. fowleri cysts were well induced after 24 hr with the above defined liquid encystment medium (buffer 1). This was confirmed by observation of a high expression of differential mRNA of nfa1 and actin genes in trophozoites. Thus, this liquid medium can replace the earlier non-nutrient agar medium for obtaining pure N. fowleri cysts. In addition, for cyst formation of Acanthamoeba spp., buffer 2 (adjusted to pH 9.0) was the more efficient medium. To summarize, these liquid encystment media may be useful for further studies which require axenic and pure amoebic cysts.
Objective of the study was to investigate characteristics and meanings of the agricultural extension work during the period of Japanese $rule(1906{\sim}1945)$ through historical review on the work. The agricultural extension work during the period of Japanese rule was categorized into six patterns such as agricultural extension work by (1) government agricultural administration system, (2) agricultural experiment/research institute, (3) public school, (4) through the movement of rural development(Nong-chon-Jinheung Undong), (5) pro-government private organization, and (6) pure private organization. In conclusion, the characteristics of the extension work were defined; 1) a tool and/or method for colonial rule, 2) non-democratic and top-down extension work by administration, 3) authoritative and coercive work initiated by governmental system, 4) nation wide work of cooperation with public and private organization, 5) extension work focused on production increasing food and industrial materials, and 6) extension work initiated by government system without participation of pure private organization. The meanings of the extension work were reviewed in two ways. Firstly, in macro point of view, the work has negative meaning that was utilized as a tool and/or method for Japanese colonial rule, since the extension work was implemented under the direction of agricultural policy and was also directly related to the policy of Japanese colonial government. Secondly, in micro point of view, the work has significant meaning either negative or positive such as 1) beginning of modernized extension work based on experiment and research, 2) introduction of forcible agricultural extension work, 3) inducement of distrust tendency to agricultural policy and agricultural extension work, 4) establishment of basis in hardware of agricultural extension work, 5) production of experience in software of agricultural extension work, and 6) improvement of recognition toward scientific farming and improvement of level in agricultural techniques.
The purpose of this research is to investigate how obesity and eating behavior are related to the concentration of serum insulin and lipids and blood pressure of middle-aged men The sample for this study utilizes 240 middle-aged men between th4 age of 40 and 60 living in the city of Kumi. Through a process of anthropometry and categorization by relative body weight, the sample is devide into two groups, the obese group (51 men) and the normal group (129 men). The results of the study were as follows : 1111111. The men from the obese group with the exception of height, subs-capular/triceps skinfold girth ratio(STR) had a higher level of body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumference, waist/hip girth ratio(WHR), subscapular and triceps skinfold thickness than the normal group (P=0.0001). 2. In comparing the serum insulin and lipids between the obese and normal group, the obese group had a higher level of insulin and triglyceride (P=0.016, P=0.050) but a lower concentration of HDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol (P=0.034, P=0.004). Also, the obese group had a higher level of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (P=0.001, P=0.029). When looking at the relationship between the serum insulin and lipids and anthropometric measurements, the relationship between waist/hip girth ratio(THR), the concentration of fasting serum insulin and lipids were stronger than the obesity index, body mass index(BMI). 3. Men who exercised regularly had a lower total cholesterol and systolic blood pressure 9P=0.049, P=0.041), and a higher level of HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol (P=0.004). There was no observable relationship between the food habit score, the preference for fiber foods, and the concentration of serum lipids. Also, the concentration of serum lipids had no apparent effect on the preference for salty, sweet, and greasy foods.
This study investigated the overall conditions related to family meals, including perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors, among middle and high school students. The data were collected from 773 male and female students attending middle and high schools in Seoul and Kyunggi-Do from March to May 2006, using pre-tested self-administered questionnaires. The results are as follows: 78.9% of the subjects lived with their parents and siblings, and 75.7% regarded family meals as meals eaten with all family members living together in a household. As for the frequency of family meals, 40.1% of the middle school subjects answered that they ate with their family 'more than once per day' and 20.8% answered '1 or 2 time per a week'. However 21.0% of the high school students had family meals 'more than once per day', and 31.7% had family meals '1 or 2 times per a week', showing a significant difference between the groups(p<0.001). When the degree of satisfaction with life was evaluated using a Likert scale(strongly satisfied 5 point, strongly unsatisfied 1 point), the middle school students showed a significantly higher level of satisfaction than the high school students towards daily life, health, nutritive conditions, and family care. feelings, attitudes, and behaviors toward family meals were also evaluated(strongly agree 5 point, strongly disagree 1 point), and the results showed that the subjects had positive psychological feelings, with significant differences based on the frequency of family meals. Likewise, the groups who ate frequent family meals scored higher on aspects related to having positive attitudes and behaviors toward the family meal, implying that eating family meals is associated with promoting friendship, psychological stability, and positive thinking in adolescents. These findings suggest that attention needs to he directed toward increasing the frequency of family meals and creating a positive family meal environment.

Chemical fertilizers have been used to increase crop production and contributed to escaping food shortages. However, excessive use of chemical fertilizers over a long period caused many problems such as environmental pollution and the hampered production potential of the land. Thus, it is necessary to develop eco-friendly bio-fertilizers that can replace the use of chemical fertilizers. Here, we tested the effect of some nitrogen-fixing microorganims on the plant growth promotion. Seventy free-living nitrogen fixing microorganisms were isolated from rhizosphere of crop cultivation fields, streamside soils and sludge in Ansung, Korea. Of them, three strains (NF2-4-1, Yeast; EMM409, Mesorhizobium; Gsoil662, Burkholderia) were selected to be most efficient in the capacity of N-fixing nitrogen based on colony forming cell assay in N-free media. To investigate the ability to promote plant growth, these strains were inoculated into the soil and cabbage were grown for 4 weeks in the grown chamber. Fresh weight, dry weight, and leaf area were measured from 4-week-old plants. Phenotypic analysis revealed that the growth of the plants inoculated with NF2-4-1 and EMM409 strains were significantly promoted compared to the mock-treated control plants, while Gsoil662-inoculated plants did not show statically significant promotion. These results indicate that these nitrogen-fixing microorganims can be used to develop plant growth promoting bio-fertilizers. Further analysis on nitrogen fixing level in soil by these strains will be tested.
This study analysed the mercury concentration in the hair of 62 students (male : 21, female : 41) of D university in Najusi, Jeon-Nam area. Also, questionnaire, which developed by NIES, were completed by the students. According to the questionnaire, most of the students had a higher intake of meat than that of fish. Also, among the students, there were many smokes and many had dental treatment with amalgam. Based on the gender, female showed 1.024 ${\mu}g/g$ and male showed 0.882 ${\mu}g/g$ of the mercury concentration. This means that female students had higher level of mercury in their hair, but it was not a significant statistic difference. Comparing by the intake frequency of meat, processed food stuffs, protein foods, it shows the more they at the higher mercury concentration was observed. According to the intake frequency of fish, when the number of times they intake increased, the mercury concentration was higher. Under one time was 0.857 ${\mu}g/g$ and twice or more times were 1.152 ${\mu}g/g$, which showed a significant statistical difference (p<0.05). Depending on the Life style, the mercury concentration in the hair was high with workout, outdoor activities, and direct smoking. The mercury concentration in the hair showed no difference for whether they received amalgam treatment but the personal dietary habit and the Living condition affects strongly on the mercury concentration level.
This is a historical study of the tea culture and its manners after checking the origin of the tea culture in Korea. Also I created the Blooming Lotus Pond Tea which can be utilized in various meetings or at homes in connection with the tea culture and etiquette by studying good manners, clothing and light refreshments in 'Kyucongyogyul' by Lee-E, 'Karyejibramdo' by Kim Jang-Seng and other books of the Chosun Dynasty. I created the Blooming Lotus Pond Tea by referring to the tea-ceremonies described in the poems by Hong Inmo, his wife, Lady Suh, and her descendants. They can be better harmonized with the modem tea culture rather than the strict procedures of traditional court ceremonies or marriage, funeral, and other formal tea ceremonies. About the costumes of the nobilities, that is especially referred to Kyukmongyogyul by Lee-I of the Chosun Dynasty for the etiquette, also 'The Living Manners' by Professor Lee Gilpyo and Choi Baeyong. In addition, the tea-food is made based on 'the five elements'. The Blooming Lotus Pond Tea is made of frozen lotus flowers and prepared in the lotus formed broad-rimmed tea-utensils and supposed to be shared with family members or guests. It's recommended to hold a poetry-party with a tea-party. At present, this kind of daily tea ceremony is being developed at homes. It'll be desirable if it could recreate the traditional way as a ceremonial tea culture. In that case, it'll regain the quality of the traditional etiquette by harmonizing tea culture and manners. Such a tea culture can contribute to the quality of people's ordinary life and the identity of our country.
