초등학생의 올바른 식습관 형성을 위한 연관교과 내 식생활교육의 효과판정 -식습관 변화를 중심으로- (Effect-Evaluation on Nutrition Education in Related Curriculums for Elementary School Children -Focused on Change of Dietary Habits-)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop of nutritional education activities and effect evaluation in related curriculums for all Dongbu Elementary School children in Jinhae by the teacher in charge. This educational purpose was to build a desirable dietary behavior for optimal growth and health in elementary school children. The educational program contents were developed according to 1) selection of content related curriculums 2) analysis of contents related on dietary habits by grade 3) preparation teaching plans to build desirable dietary habits 4) development of teaching manual by turns. Twelve hours of nutrition education at all school classes were done from March 2 to December 10 2004 in Dongbu Elementary School in Jinhae, Gyeongnam. The education effects were evaluated through the questionnaire surveys before and after the education and their comparative analysis. The results of this study were summarized as follows : Forty percent of the underweight group, $22.8\%$ of the normal group, $42.2\%$ of the obese group had the wrong perceptions on their body figures, but after nutrition education $80.5\%$ of the underweight group, $94.3\%$ of the normal group, $97.9\%$ of the obese group gleaned the correct perceptions on their body figures (p < 0.001). As the effects of the education, the subjects who exercise more than 3 times in a week increased in all groups (p < 0.01-0.001), notably in the obese group. Meal regularity (p < 0.001) , skipping meals (p < 0.001), eating rate and snack selection patterns (p < 0.01-p < 0.001) also improved by nutrition education. We could also observe the effects of the nutrition education through the affirmative statements which appeared in their dietary records. These results showed a possibility of nutrition education activities in related curriculums to improve in dietary habits of school children. Next year, we will start with the system of nutrition teachers in elementary school, but nutrition teacher cannot undertake the task of teaching and food service management alone. 산모의 요오드섭취가 산후 갑상선염 발현에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Dietary Iodine Intake on the Postpartum Thyroiditis(PPT) Manifestation)

  • Iodine-rich seaweed soup has been traditionally supplied to postpartum women in Korea. This dietary habit might introduce over-intake of iodine above the recommended requirements, and might provoke postpartum thyroid dysfunction. Although the response to excess iodine intake is highly variable, goiter, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and thyroiditis could follow the daily intake of 1,500$\mu\textrm{g}$ of iodine. A few studies are available concerning iodine toxicity in Korea. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the dietary intake of iodine and thyroid function change as well as the incidence of postpartum thyroiditis. One hundred and thirty-seven postpartum women who had experienced normal deliveries were studied. Dietary intake of iodine and excretion concentration of iodine in breast milk and maternal urine were measured . Serum T$_3$, T$_4$, TSH, anti-thyroglobulin antibody, and anti-microsomal antibody were anlayzed 1 week before delivery and 1, 6, 12, and24 weeks after delivery. Iodine intake was analyzed by one-to-one interviews using 24-hr recall and a food frequncy questionnaire. The result showed that the intake of dietary iodine before delivery and 1 and24 weeks after delivery were 483$\mu\textrm{g}$/day, 3367$\mu\textrm{g}$/day, and 1069$\mu\textrm{g}$/day, respectively. The concentration of iodine in urine at the first week after delivery was 63$\mu\textrm{g}$/dL, and 23.9$\mu\textrm{g}$/dL in breast milk . The levels of serum T$_3$ and T$_4$ before delivery were 2.01ng/mL and 11.49$\mu\textrm{g}$U/dL, respectively, showing that the levels were gradually dropping to normal values after delivery. Positive serum anti-thyroglobulin antibody and anti-microsomal antibody appeared in 3 cases. After a 24 week follow-up period , 6 women(10.3%) experienced cases of postpartum thyroiditis, 5 of which were cases of hyperthyroidism and one of which was a case of hypothyroidism. These figures of postpartum thyroiditis are similar to those of other countries.

  • This study was carried out for analyzing pathological and epidemiological factors of osteoporosis and doing pilot test using trial compounds of tuna bone and oriental herbs based on the factors. Osteoporosis is originated from osteoblast, osteoclast, organic and inorganic factors etc. Therefore the pathology of osteoporosis is not simple because the cytokine, growth factors and hormones of the components are various a lot. Taking a view of epidemiological factors of type I osteoporosis, ageㆍmenarcheㆍcholesterolㆍBMI etc. have definite relation to them. So we can approach to aging or consumptive disease in oriental medicine, specifically differential diagnosis of blood depletion with deficiency of qi, deficiency of kidney, deficiency of yin, bony weakness etc. And it should be considered together with rules for maintaining good health or habit concomitantly. Therefore IL1ㆍ6 or TNF αㆍβ are generally used as molecular biological index for osteoblast and osteoclast because the most important index is bone mineral density and strength, but the factors like collagen and noncollagen protein must be accounted as biomarkers. Trial compounds generally showed favorable effects on accompanying subjective symptoms of osteoporosis in the pilot test for menopausal woman. But if she didn't have specific symptoms of osteoporosis there wasn't any specific change. And osteocalcin was increased in case of being under standard level, but wasn't changed in case of normal level. Therefore these trial compounds can be used as a funcdonal diet for type I osteoporotic patients or preventive measures.

자녀((子女)의 식습관(食習慣) 육성(育成)에 미치는 부모(父母)의 영향(影響)에 관(關)한 조사연구(調査硏究) (A Study of Children's Dietary Habits, focusing on Parental Influences)

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 식습관(食習慣)에 있어서의 부모자(父母子)의 일치도(一致度)와 또한 이 사람들의 각종(各種) 식습관(食習慣)의 경향(傾向)을 조사(調査)하여 영양교육자료(營養敎育資料)를 얻는데 그 목적(目的)이 있다. 조사대상(調査對象)은 서울시내(市內)에 거주하는 국민학교(國民學校)부터 고등학교(高等學校)까지의 남녀학생(男女學生) 1,000명(名)과 동일대상학생(同一對象學生)의 부(父)와 모(母) 2,000명(名)을 대상(對象)으로 하고, 조사방법(調査方法)은 질문지법(質問紙法)(questio nnaire)을 사용(使用)하였다. 자료(資料)는 $Chi-Square(x^2)$에 의한 상관계수(相關係數)와 백분율(百分率)로 통계처리(統計處理)하였다. 조사결과(調査結果) 얻은 결론(結論)은 다음과 같다. 1. 식습관(食習慣)에 있어서의 부모자(父母子)의 일치도(一致度) 자녀(子女)의 성별(性別), 출생순위별(出生順位別) 모두 부(父)보다 모(母)의 영향(影響)이 더 컸다. 특(特)히 성별(性別)로 볼 때 여자(女子)와 츨생순위(出生順位)로 볼 때 중간자녀(中間子女)가 모(母)와의 상관(相關)정도가 높았다. 2. 각종(各種) 식습관(食習慣)에 대(對)한 경향조사(傾向調査) 1) 기호면(嗜好面) : 성별(性別), 연령별에 상관(相關)없이 일반적(一般的)으로 다 좋아하는 식품(食品)은 쇠고기, 우유, 만두, 도마도, 오이, 상추, 시금치였고 싫어하는 식품(食品)은 돼지비계, 쇠간, 진밥 돼지고기였다. 2) 영양(營養) 및 식사행동면(食事行動面) : 주부(主婦)의 교육수준(敎育水準), 경제수준(經濟水準)이 높을수록 영양지식(營養知識), 가족(家族)의 영양(營養)에 대(對)한 관심도(關心度), 새로운 조리법(調理法)에 대(對)한 진취성(進取性)이 높았고 Food Attitudes, 음식과 보상(補償)관계는 주부(主婦)의 교육수준(敎育水準), 경제수준(經濟水準)과 무관(無關)하였다. 3) 식습관변화면(食習慣變化面) : 조사대상중(調査對象中) 식습관(食習慣)이 변(變)한 사람은 70%이상(以上)에 달(達)하였으며 변화(變化)의 원인(原因)과 시기(時期)는 결혼(結婚)이후 배우자(配偶者)의 영향(影響)이 가장 컸다. 이상(以上)의 결과(結果)를 통(通)하여 각(各) 가정(家庭)에 있어서 주부(主婦)의 자녀(子女)들에 대(對)한 올바른 영향지도(營養指導)가 얼마나 중요(重要)한가를 알 수 있었다. 또한 주부(主婦)의 교육수준(敎育水準)이 높다고 하여 자녀(子女)들에 대한 영양교육면(營養敎育面)이 모두 바람직하다고는 볼 수 없었으므로 교육(敎育)받은 여성(女性)들의 책임(責任)과 자각(自覺)이 시급히 요청(要請)됨을 알 수 있었다.

대구.경북지역 뇌졸중 환자의 생활습관 및 식행동 특성 (Life Style and Eating Behavior of Stroke Patients in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Province, Korea)

  • 본 연구는 대구 경북지역 뇌졸중 환자들의 생활습관 및 식행동 특성을 분석하여 뇌졸중과 관련 있는 위험요인을 파악함으로써 지역민의 뇌졸중 예방을 위한 영양교육의 기초자료를 얻고자 수행되었다. 조사 대상자는 뇌졸중으로 처음 진단받은 입원 환자 100명(남자 50명, 여자 50명)을 환자군으로 하고 같은 기간 동안 뇌졸중 병력이 없고 환자군과 연령이 비슷한 지역 사회 주민 150명(남자 75명, 여자 75명)을 대조군으로 하였다. 조사는 일반특성, 생활습관, 식행동 특성, 식품섭취빈도, 식품 기호도 등의 내용을 포함한 설문지를 이용하여 조사자와 직접 면접을 통하여 실시하였으며 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 뇌졸중 환자의 평균 연령은 남자 63.5세, 여자 69.9세였으며 일반 특성사항에서 환자군이 대조군에 비해 유의적으로 높은 것은 BMI, 당뇨병 고혈압과 심장병의 유병율, 뇌졸중과 당뇨병 고혈압의 가족력과 시골 거주율이었고, 유의적으로 낮은 것은 교육수준이었다. 생활습관에서 전체적으로 환자군은 대조군에 비해 흡연율이 유의적으로 높았고 녹차섭취와 규칙적 운동습관이 유의적으로 낮았다. 성별로는 남자는 흡연율과 규칙적인 운동 여부에서, 여자는 녹차섭취와 규칙적인 운동 유무에서 환자 대조군 간 유의한 차이를 보였다. 식행동 특성에서는 환자군은 대조군에 비해 불규칙한 식사, 과식, 육식의 비율이 높았고, 충분히 씹는 습관과 한식 섭취 비율이 유의적으로 낮았다. 식품섭취빈도는 전체적으로 환자군은 식용유, 참기름의 섭취 빈도가 대조군에 비해 유의하게 높았으나 콩제품, 채소류, 버섯류, 해조류, 종실류, 생선 어패류, 올리브유, 두유, 녹차, 과일 주스의 섭취 빈도가 유의하게 낮았다. 식품 기호도에서는 환자군은 대조군에 비해 닭고기, 계란, 볶음, 짠맛, 단맛의 선호도가 유의적으로 높았고 국류, 찌개류, 김치류, 해조류, 생선류, 우유 및 유제품, 콩유, 채소류, 과일류, 무침조리법의 선호가 유의적으로 낮았다. 본 연구 결과, 높은 BMI, 당뇨병과 고혈압의 유병, 뇌졸중 가족력, 흡연, 과식과, 육식의 식습관은 뇌졸중의 위험인자로 나타났고, 규칙적 운동습관과 녹차 섭취, 음식을 충분히 씹는 습관, 한식의 섭취, 콩 제품과 채소류, 버섯류, 해조류 생선 어패류, 두유, 녹차의 잦은 섭취가 보호인자로 나타났다. 따라서 정상 체중을 유지하고 고혈압, 당뇨병과 같은 선행질환을 예방하고 관리하는 것이 뇌졸중을 예방하기 위한 중요한 생활습관이라 생각된다. 또한 녹차의 섭취와 금연, 규칙적인 운동은 남녀 모두에서 뇌졸중을 예방하는 좋은 생활습관이며 규칙적인 식사와 과식금지, 충분히 씹는 습관, 단 음식의 절제, 채식과 육식을 가리지 않고 골고루 섭취하는 것, 조리법으로는 무침, 초무침을 선택하는 것이 뇌졸중을 예방하는 좋은 식습관인 것으로 나타났다.

COVID-19 팬데믹 전후 한국 성인 남녀의 건강 및 식생활행태 비교연구: 국민건강영양조사 제8기(2019-2021년도) 자료 활용 (Comparative study on the health and dietary habits of Korean male and female adults before and after the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: utilizing data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2021))

  • Objectives: This study aims to compare changes in physical factors, health behaviors, eating habits, and nutritional intake among Korean male and female adults over a period of three years (2019-2021) before and after the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: This study utilized raw data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2021). The participants in this study included 6,235 individuals in 2019, 5,865 individuals in 2020, and 5,635 individuals in 2021. Individuals whose daily energy intake was less than 500 kcal or exceeded 5,000 kcal were excluded from the study. Results: In comparison to 2019, overweight/obesity rates, weight, waist circumference, weekend sleep hours, and resistance exercise days/week increased in both male and female during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regarding eating habits, the proportions of people skipping breakfast, not eating out, consuming health supplements, and recognizing nutritional labels increased in 2020 and 2021, whereas the rate of skipping dinner decreased. Total energy intake has continued to decrease for the two years since 2019. A comparison of nutrient intake per 1,000 kcal before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 revealed that intake of nutrients, including protein, phosphorus, iron, vitamin A, riboflavin, and niacin increased, while folic acid intake decreased. In male, calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin, and niacin intakes increased, whereas iron, vitamin C, and folic acid intakes decreased. In female, phosphorus, iron, vitamin A, and riboflavin intake increased significantly, while protein and niacin intake decreased significantly. Conclusions: After COVID-19, the obesity rate, breakfast skipping rate, health supplement intake, and nutritional label use increased, while the frequency of eating out, dinner skipping rate, and total energy intake decreased. These environmental changes and social factors highlight the need for nutritional education and management to ensure proper nutritional intake and reduce obesity rates in the post-COVID-19 era.

경남지역 일부 초등학교 비만아동의 식습관 분석 및 영양교육을 위한 교수학습과정안 개발 (A Survey on Dietary Habits in Gyeongnam and the Development of the Nutrition Education Curriculum with Teacher's Guide for Obese Elementary School Children)

  • 본 연구는 경남 일부 초등학교 비만아동을 대상으로 식습관, 영양교육에 대한 인식, 영양지식을 조사하여 분석한 자료를 바탕으로 비만아동의 영양교육을 위한 수업지도안을 개발하였다. 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 아동의 신체적 특징으로 신장은 남학생과 여학생 간에 유의적인 차이는 없으며 체중은 남학생(55.0${\pm}$9.0 kg)이 여학생(52.0${\pm}$9.4 kg)보다 유의적으로 높았다(p<0.05). 2. 전체 아동의 83.5%가 영양교육을 받아본 경험이 없다고 답하였으며 80.3%가 영양교육의 필요하다고 답하여 영양교육에 대한 관심도가 크다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 3. 희망하는 영양교육 내용에는 '체중 감소를 위한 식사조절법(64.7%)', '올바른 간식(12.2%)'으로 조사되었다. 희망하는 영양교육 방법으로 남학생은 '게임(35.4%)', '강의(18.8%)', '조리실습(16.7)', '개인상담(16.7%)' 순으로, 여학생은 '조리실습(25.6%)', '개인상담(25.6%)', '강의(11.6%)', '그림그리기(11.6%)'로 나타나 유의적인 차이를 보였다(p<0.01). 4. 아동의 식사속도는 남학생이 여학생보다 식사속도가 유의적으로 빠른 결과를 나타내었다(p<0.05). 5. 운동종목에서 남학생이 '가벼운 레포츠활동(27.0%)'과 '구기종목(25.4%)'을 여학생은 '가벼운 레포츠 활동(47.9%)'과 '걷기(25.4%)'를 선호하여 유의적인 차이를 보였다(p<0.001). 운동장소로 남학생이 여학생에 비해 운동장 등 활발한 장소를 선택하여 유의적인 차이를 보였다(p<0.001). 6. 영양교육 수업지도안 개발은 비만 개선을 위한 올바른 식습관과 영양지식을 교육하기 위해 13차시 분량의 수업지도안을 개발하였다. 개발된 초등학교 고학년용 영양교육 교수 학습지도안은 비만 정의 알기, 자신의 모습 사랑하기, 식사와 관련된 감각 익히기, 식품군 알기, 아침결식개선, 편식개선, 올바른 간식선택, 외식의 8개 대주제와 13개의 소주제로 구성된 13차시였다. 본 연구의 수업지도안을 활용하여 실제로 수업하여 그 효과판정을 하지 못했으므로 그에 대한 후속 연구가 이루어져야 하며 비만인구는 점점 증가하고 세계적으로 문제시되고 있지만 이에 대한 교육방법 개발과 실제 교육은 학교에서 거의 이루어지고 있지 않은 실정이다. 앞으로 비만문제를 단순히 가정에 맡기거나 의학적인 문제로 방치하기 보다는 그 예방차원이 우선시되어 아이들의 교육을 담당하고 있는 학교에서 식습관 관련 수업이 영양교사에 의해서 이루어지는 것이 필요하리라 생각된다.

경기도지역 어린이집의 단체급식 중 나트륨 함량 실태조사 연구 (Survey on the Sodium Contents of Nursery School Meals in Gyeonggi-Do)

  • 어린이 먹거리 안전관리를 위한 목적으로 경기지역 6개 도시 12개소의 어린이집을 대상으로 여름철과 겨울철에 각각 5일간 현지 출장하였으며, 실측량 기록법으로 단체급식에 제공되는 식품의 섭취량을 조사하였고 총 601건의 시료를 수거하여 식품 중 나트륨 섭취량을 조사 연구하였다. 조사결과 어린이집의 한 끼니 당 평균 나트륨 섭취량은 582.2 mg으로 세계보건기구와 세계농업기구(WHO/FAO)의 성인 섭취 권장량의 2,000 mg/1일의 29.1%를 차지하고 있었으며, 본 연구의 조사대상이 어린이임을 고려하면 매우 높은 양이다. 어린이집의 나트륨 섭취에 가장 영향을 미치는 식품군은 국 및 탕류로 어린이집 나트륨 섭취량의 35.7%를 차지하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 국에서 나트륨 섭취를 줄이는 방법이 어린이집에서 효율적인 나트륨 섭취 저감화가 될 것으로 사료된다. 여름철과 겨울철의 나트륨 섭취량은 각각 572.3 mg, 592.3 mg으로 나타나 겨울철의 나트륨 섭취량이 높은 것으로 나타났으나 유의적 차이는 없었으며, 지역 특성에 따른 나트륨 섭취량은 공단지역이 가장 높은 696.4 mg으로 나타났고, 가장 섭취량이 적은 지역은 아파트단지로서 514.3 mg이었다. 영양사의 배치에 따른 나트륨 섭취량은 영양사가 배치되지 않은 어린이집이 545.1 mg으로 영양사가 배치된 어린이집 619.4 mg보다 유의적으로 낮게 나타났으며 나트륨 섭취량(mg)/한 끼 섭취량(g) 비를 조사한 결과 유의적 차이는 식품의 나트륨 함량과 식품의 섭취량에 기인한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 조사결과 어린이집에서 나트륨 섭취량 저감화를 위해서는 어린이집 단체급식의 종사자에 대한 나트륨 교육 및 실질적인 나트륨 측정방법 교육 등을 제공하는 것이 필요하다고 사료된다. 본 연구 조사는 어린이 먹거리 안전관리 중 나트륨 저감화 정책의 중요한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있으며 향후 나트륨 저감화 사업을 위해서는 어린이집 단체급식 종사자에 대한 실질적인 교육이 필요할 것이라 사료된다.

일 지역 성인의 구강건강실태에 관한 조사연구 (A study on the status of the Dental Health of Adults)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the state of the dental health of adults, used self-reporting qestionnaire as objects of 923 residents living in nine districts at random among the sites of eleven town located in a County. The level of knowledge on dental health of adults in a County was 65.6 points out of 100 points, comparatively low. Accodingly, it is necessary for entire adults to have a dental health-related education and get high standard of knowledge. Especially, educational approach should be performed for groups of 40-49 years old, 50-59 years old, above 60 years old, male, no educational background, having only elementary and middle school education, not having any jobs, engaging in agriculture, doing business on their own and so on. When planning the contents of health education, one actually has to include the habit of amalgam, the factor in influencing on dental health as well as show an example such as how to brush teeth, checking point of proper brushing, how to grip toothbrush. The attitude score related to dental heath was 71.2 points out of 100 points, relatively low. Consequently, the change of attitude related the dental health among entire adults is necessary, particularily, the strategical approach is essential to change dental health connected to attitude positively for groups of male, having high school education background, office workers and the civil service. Besides, among dental health related symtoms, more that 30-40% of objects showed negative attitude toward as the following cases; in case that plaque or food debris are attached to the teeth (40.8%), upper and lower teeth do not fit together(40.3%), you cannot sleep well because of toothache(31.0%), more than one tooth fall out(31.0%), you have loosing teeth(30.6%), the approach should be conducted to form attitude that dental care is necessry. The state of dental health through dental health related symtoms was 33.3 points out of 100 points, which was fairly satisfactory. However, dental treatment for the state of dental health should be executed in case of comparison of the dental health state according to general characteristics, the group who are above 60 years old, have elementary school education background, engage in aggriculture who are not good in dental health state as opposed to other groups. Furthermore, there should be dental care needs according to dental health related symtoms, particularly, more than 60-70% of objects have experienced symtoms that plaque or food debris attached to the teeth, tartar is on the teeth so dental treatment should be peformed for a large number of adults. In addition, for the people who have indications that there was a cavity, more than one tooth loss, chilled teeth, toothache when chewing, loose teeth, upper and lower teeth do not fit together, you cannnt sleep well due to the toothach, etc, there should be care through dental treatment. The actual conditions of the hygine of the mouth was relatively good and the difference of the actual state of dental health care in terms of general characteristics showed in only gender; female was more careful in dental health. Comparing the state of oral health synthetically, when they have symtoms, only 34.8% of objects go to a dentist, 60.7% are using passive or negative care such as gargling, tolerating or ignoring. There was many symtoms to care through dental therapy such as plaque or food debris get in between the teeth, tartar on the teeth, teeth are very cold, more than one tooth fallout, loose teeth, there is wrong amalgam, and so on, among symtoms to care passively or negatively. Therefore the education for proper treatment program should be performed. As a result of dental health-related knowlege, attitude, health state, verification of correlation between the actual condition of care, the higher the dental heath-related knowldege becomes, the more positive the dental health-related attitude is, and the state of dental health, that is, the standard of the symtom of dental health diminishes. the care for dental health executed through more active method and the more positive dental health-related attitude is, the more active means they performed. Consequently, the high level of dental health-related knowledge should be necessary, the more positive the dental health-related attitude was, the more active method they adopted, therefore, the program is needed to form attitude related to the dental health positively. As the knowledge on dental health is increasing, the attitude is also positive, after all, the plan to increase the standard of knowledge on dental health should be contrived through education program related to dental health.

울산지역 노인의 생활습관에 따른 항산화 영양소 섭취실태 및 혈액내 항산화 영양 상태 비교 (The Effects of Smoking, Drinking and Exercise on Autioxidant Vitamin Intakes and Plasma Antioxidant Status in Elderly People Living in Ulsan)

  • Body antioxidant status is an important factor in the prevention of many chronic diseases caused by oxidative stress, especially in the elderly and is affected by health-related habits, such as smoking, drinking and regular physical activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between these health-related habits and plasma antioxidant status in the elderly. Plasma antioxidant status was examined by determining plasma levels of antioxidant vitamins (vitamin C, A, E, $\beta$ -carotene), total antioxidant status (TAS) and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) . The subjects included 225 elderly persons aged over 60 yews (63 males, 162 females) living in the Ulsan area. They were interviewed to collect data on their general characteristics and health behaviors such as smoking, exercise and alcohol consumption by means of questionnaires. Their dietary intakes were obtained by means of semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) The study population was divided into two or three groups according to their smoking, drinking, and exercise status. The ratio of smoker, drinker and exerciser was 16.7%, 31.0% and 44.2% respectively. The dietary antioxidant vitamin intakes were not significantly different among groups of smoking and drinking status, but tended to be higher in non-smokers and non-drinkers than in smokers and drinkers. Plasma vitamin C and $\beta$ -carotene levels were significantly higher in non-smokers, but Plasma vitamin A and TBARS levels were significantly lower in non-smokers than in smokers. Plasma TAS was not significantly different among the smoking groups, but showed a tendency to decrease with an increase in the number of packyear. Plasma vitamin C and $\beta$ -carotene levels of the non-drinkers were higher than those of drinkers and past-drinkers, but plasma vitamin A, C, E, TAS and TBARS showed no difference among the groups of drinker. All vitamin intakes of the exercisers were slightly higher than those of the non-exercisers, but vitamin C intake was significantly higher in female exercisers than in non-exercisers. Plasma $\beta$ -carotene levels were significantly higher in male exercisers and plasma vitamin A, C, E, TAS and TBARS levels tended to be higher in exercisers than in non-exercisers. These results suggested that change to non-smoker, modulation of alcohol consumption and regular exercise could enhance antioxidant defences against reactive oxygen species and might increase the likelihood of a healthier life span.
