  • 사람의 발성 기관은 공기를 짜내어 주는 역할을 하는 호흡기관(breathing apparatus)과 소리의 원음을 만들어 내는 성대(vocal folds) 그리고 성대로부터 만들어진 원음을 공명 (resonance) 시키고 여과(filtering) 시킴으로써 특징적인 소리의 모양을 갖추는 역할을 하는 성도(vocal tract)로 크게 나누어 볼 수 있다.

  • Semi-invariant submanifolds of Lorentzian almost paracontact mani-folds are studied. Integrability of certain distributions on the submanifold are in vestigated. It has been proved that a LP-Sasakian manifold does not admit a proper semi-invariant submanifold.

Post-Affricate Phonatory Processes in Korean and English: Acoustic Correlates and Implications for Phonological Analysis

  • This study investigates phonation modes of vowels following the affricate consonants in Korean and English- -tense affricate /c'/, lenis affricate /c/, and aspirated affricate /$c^{h}$/ for Korean; voiced affricate /$\check{J}$/ and aspirated affricate /c/ for English. The investigation makes significant use of the H1*-H2* measure (a normalized amplitude difference between the first and second harmonics) to provide acoustic correlates of the phonation types. The major findings for English are that the H1*-H2* measure at the vowel onset was significantly larger in post-aspirated position than in post-voiced position. The Korean data showed the H1*-H2* measure at the vowel onset to be significantly higher in the post-aspirated class than in the post-tense class. On the other hand, the Fo values for the post-lenis vowels were significantly lower than those of the other two classes during the first half of the vowel. Based on the phonetic results, this study argues for the need to incorporate the [stiff vocal folds] and [slack vocal folds] features into the phonological treatments of Korean affricates, while maintaining the two features [constricted glottis] and [spread glottis].

가족 발생적인 갑상선이상의 방사성면역 측정법에 의한 TSH 평가 (An Evaluation by TSH Radioimmunoassay on Familial Thyroid Disorders)

  • The occurrence of thyroid disorders is connected with iodine deficiency, defective synthesis or releasing of thyroid hormone and endemicity. Genetic factors are known as a single gene defects, interaction of multiple genes with environmental factors, as well as chromosomal aberrations. Diofnosis thyroid disorders is enforced by I-131 uptake test, thyroid scanning with I-131 or Tc-99 m and serum radioimmunoassays of T3, T4, free T4 and TSH. They were largely classified as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, simple goiter and normal. The pedigree of 58 families was drawn by propositus, and then the correlation between thyroid disorders and TSH levels was analyzed. The results are as follows: 1) The offsprings and their mothers of 15 families were hypothyroidism, THS level was 5 folds for offsprings and 4 folds for mothers in comparison with control group. 2) 13 families were hyperthyyroidism in siblings but their mothers were normal in thyroid function, TSH level of the siblings was lower than control group. 3) Though the offsprings and their mothers of 10 families were similar to TSH level of control group, they are all simple goiter, familial thyroid disorders, in other thyroid function test. The familial thyroid disorders suggested that these transmitted from mothers to offsprings with X-linked dominant or autosomal dominant inheritance.

우리벼메뚜기 유충과 성충의 전장 점막상피에 관한 형태학적 연구 (Morphological Studies on the Epithelium of the Foregut of the Nymph and the Adult in the Grasshopper, Oxya sinuosa)

  • The morphological characteristics and changes of the foregut in the grasshopper (Oxya sinuosa Mistshenko) have been studied with the special reference to the developmental stage. In light microscope level, the epithelia are seen the cuboidal shape in the 5th instar nymph and the adult. A number of pigment granules are appeared in the cuboidal epithelium of the 5th instar nymph, however the pigment granules were a few in the adult. Indistinct or undifferentiated folds of the epithelial layer were appeared in the 5th instar nymph, whereas the well-developed folds were in the adult. The well-developed muscular layers are seen in the 5th instar nymph, however in the adult the muscular layers are appeared thin or a few layer except the crop. In electron microscope level, in the foregut epithelium, a few round or oval shaped mitochondria, well-developed rER, Golgi complex, lysosome and a number of vacuoles were appeared in the cytoplasm. Two types of pigment granules, electron dense or homogenous and low electron dense or lamellar profiles, are seen in the esophageal epithelium. The crystalline profiles and plasma membrane infoldings were also appeared. In the foregut epithelium of the 5th instar nymph, however the cell organelles were generally undifferentiated and in the crop two types of pigment granules as the adult esophageal epithelium were also found.

Registration of 3D CT Data to 2D Endoscopic Image using a Gradient Mutual Information based Viewpoint Matching for Image-Guided Medialization Laryngoplasty

  • We propose a novel method for the registration of 3D CT scans to 2D endoscopic images during the image-guided medialization laryngoplasty. This study aims to allow the surgeon to find the precise configuration of the implant and place it into the desired location by employing accurate registration methods of the 3D CT data to intra-operative patient and interactive visualization tools for the registered images. In this study, the proposed registration methods enable the surgeon to compare the outcome of the procedure to the pre-planned shape by matching the vocal folds in the CT rendered images to the endoscopic images. The 3D image fusion provides an interactive and intuitive guidance for surgeon by visualizing a combined and correlated relationship of the multiple imaging modalities. The 3D Magic Lens helps to effectively visualize laryngeal anatomical structures by applying different transparencies and transfer functions to the region of interest. The preliminary results of the study demonstrated that the proposed method can be readily extended for image-guided surgery of real patients.

Production of Selenium Peptide by Autolysis of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

  • Selenium-containing peptide (selenium peptide) was produced by autolysis of total proteins of Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown with inorganic selenium. Selenium peptide exhibited antioxidant activity as a glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mimic, and its activity was dependent on the hydrolysis methods. The GPx-like activity of the hydrolyzed selenium peptide increased 2.7-folds when digested by protease, but decreased by acid hydrolysis. During the autolysis of the yeast cell, the GPx-like activity and selenium content increased 4.3- and 2.3-folds, respectively, whereas the average molecular weight (MW) of selenium peptide decreased 70%. The GPx-like activity was dependent on the MW of selenium peptide and was the highest (220 U/mg protein) at 9,500 dalton. The maximum GPx-like activity (28,600 U/g cell) was obtained by 48 h of autolysis of the cells, which were precultured with 20 ppm of selenate. Selenium peptide showed little toxicity, compared with highly toxic inorganic selenium. These results show the potential of selenium peptide as a nontoxic antioxidant that can be produced by simple autolysis of yeast cells.

Dynamic analysis of a cylindrical boom based on Miura origami

  • The dynamic behavior of the deployment and folding process of a foldable boom based on the Miura origami pattern is investigated in this paper. Firstly, mechanical behavior of a single storey during the motion is studied numerically. Then the deployment and folding of a multi-storey boom is discussed. Moreover, the influence of the geometry parameters and the number of Miura-ori elements n on the dynamic behavior of the boom is also studied. Finally, the influence of the imperfection on the dynamic behavior is investigated. The results show that the angles between the diagonal folds and horizontal folds will have great effect on the strains during the motion. A bistable configuration can be obtained by choosing proper fold angles for a given multi-storey boom. The influence of the imperfection on the folding behavior of the foldable mast is significant.
