Development of testing apparatus and fundamental study for performance and cutting tool wear of EPB TBM in soft ground (토사지반 EPB TBM의 굴진성능 및 커팅툴 마모량에 관한 실험장비 개발 및 기초연구)

  • The excavation performance and the cutting tool wear prediction of shield TBM are very important issues for design and construction in TBM tunneling. For hard-rock TBMs, CSM and NTNU model have been widely used for prediction of disc cutter wear and penetration rate. But in case of soft-ground TBMs, the wear evaluation and the excavation performance have not been studied in details due to the complexity of the ground behavior and therefore few testing methods have been proposed. In this study, a new soil abrasion and penetration tester (SAPT) that simulates EPB TBM excavation process is introduced which overcomes the drawbacks of the previously developed soil abrasivity testers. Parametric tests for penetration rate, foam mixing ratio, foam concentration were conducted to evaluate influential parameters affecting TBM excavation and also ripper wear was measured in laboratory. The results of artificial soil specimen composed of 70% illite and 30% silica sand showed TBM additives such as foam play a key role in terms of excavation and tool wear.

  • In all the Rapid Prototyping (RP) techniques, the computer-aided design (CAD) model of a three-dimensional part is sliced into horizontal layers of uniform, but not necessarily constant, thickness in the building direction. Each cross- sectional layer is successively deposited and, at the same time, bonded onto the previous layer. The stacked layers form a physical part of the model. The objective of this study is to develop a software for automatic generation of unit shape part(USP) for a new RP process, Variable Lamination Manufacturing using the linear hotwire cutting technique and expandable polystyrene foam sheet as part material(VLM-S). In order to examine the applicability of the developed software to VLM-S, USPs of general three-dimensional shapes, such as an auto-shift lever knob and a pyramid shape were generated.

Recycling of Sound Insulation Headliner Waste Material (흡음재 폐기물의 재활용 방안)

  • The headliner was made of polyurethane(PU) and glass fiber(GF) composite materials are widely used as a sound insulation material. A large amount of waste materials occurs as a by-product in the headliner manufacturing process. In order to efficiently reuse the headliner waste materials, separation process of the components are very necessary. According to the results of thermal analysis, weight loss showed increase in the order polyurethane foam> non-foaming polyurethane> non-woven fabric> 1st layer> glass fiber in the range of up to $400^{\circ}C$. Analysis of the DSC characteristics, HDPE, LLDPE, PP, and Master Batch by adding additives the wasted scrap. As a result, except for the PP, there was no exothermic transition due to the crystallization.

In-Situ Formation of Porous HAp Using Polymer Foam Process (폴리머 발포법을 이용한 다공성 HAp 지지체의 제조 및 특성 평가)

  • Porous HAp with three-dimensional network channels was prepared in a polymer foam process using a in-situ formation. HAp/polyol with various HAp solid contents was formed with an addition of isocyanate. Under all conditions, the obtained porous HAp had pore sizes ranging $50\;{\mu}m$ to $250\;{\mu}m$. The influence of the HAp content on the physical and mechanical properties of porous HAp scaffolds was investigated. As the solid content increased, the porosity of the porous HAp decreased from 79.3% to 77.9%. On the other hand, the compressive strength of the porous HAp increased from 0.7 MPa to 3.7 MPa. With a HAp solid content of 15 g, the obtained porous HAp had physical properties that were more suitable for scaffolds compared to other conditions.

  • Rapid Prototyping (RP) and Rapid Tooling (RT) were introduced to reduce time-to-market and cost by shortening not only the development phase but also the production phase of the manufacturing process. RP generally builds up a prototype layer by layer, rapidly generating a fully three-dimensional free form shape. RT enables the manufacture of production tools. The integration of RP and RT has the potential for rapid net shaping of thee-dimensional parts, which have geometrical complexity. In this study, net shaping techniques for making three-dimensional parts using RP and RT are described and a sample part are shown. A three-dimensional metal part is manufactured by a new RP process, Variable Lamination Manufacturing by using Expandable Polystyrene Foam (VLM-S), and its application to RT for making a clover punch. In addition, we discussed the technology fusion between metal forming md RP/RT.

Reduction of floating Dross in the Zinc Bath (도금욕 부유드로스의 감소)

  • Dross formation in the zinc bath is inevitable under any condition as long as coating process on steel strip continues. Thus, bath aluminum and temperature are precisely managed to suppress the increase of dross. Also, excessive dross for normal coating process is generally eliminated physically by bubbling and skimming. Total amount of dross in the bath can be sometimes high enough to cause coating defect. On the other hand, local concentration of dross can make coating defect even with satisfactory level of total amount of dross. Reduction of dross in the bath was attempted by using ceramic foam filter made of mainly alumina. Dross in molten zinc was almost reduced to the levels of solubility of iron and aluminum in molten zinc at $450~460^{\circ}C$. Their solubility levels were confirmed by thermodynamic calculations or DEAL program. Two kinds of filters were tested for dross reduction. One was #20 ppi, porous per inch, and the other #30 ppi filter. Both were effective in reducing the bath dross to the solubility levels at the static state. Bath iron was reduced by 24 wt% and 19 wt% with #20 filter, and by 35 wt% and 29 wt% with #30 filter for GI and GA pot, respectively. Also, ceramic foam filter did not make any harm to the zinc bath composition after filtering test.

Study on Size Evaluation by Surface Expansion for Soft Polymer Foam (연질 고분자 발포체의 표면팽창을 통한 치수평가에 관한 연구)

  • The dimensional quality of flexible foams is often difficult to be evaluated through general machine vision inspection methods due to the free deformation of the outer shape. For the evaluation of the dimensions of flexible foams, methods of estimating the size of the product through the expansion rate of the product surface are evaluated. Specimens with various dimensions and surface gratings are prepared, and the degree of surface expansion is measured through machine vision. The correlation, between the measured surface grid size and the actual size of test specimens, is analyzed. We further analyze the correlation between the size of test specimens and the position of the surface grid. This study provides a basis for estimating the actual dimensions of specimens by measuring the surface expansion of flexible foams.

  • This paper describes the development for the dual thrust rocket motor with two types of propellants with different combustion characteristics. We developed the composition of two kinds of propellant to be applied to a rocket motor, and improved a propellant charging process in a free grain type to improve the adhesion method and the problems of adhesion between different propellants. In addition, to meet the ignition phenomenon as a small rocket motor, the ignition delay was improved by applying a nozzle plug developed in a high density foam. The propulsion rocket motor reflecting this design and the improved manufacturing process was evaluated through a ground performance test.

  • In this paper, fabric composite draping on hemisphere moulds were studied to find out the deformation behaviour of micro-tow structures of fabrics during draping and thermoforming. Aluminium and PVC foams were used to fabricate the hemisphere moulds for draping tests. In order to observe the local tow deformation pattern during the draping several specimens for microscopic observation were sectioned from the draped hemisphere structures. The effect of forming condition and mould properties on tow deformation was investigated by the microscopic observation of the tow parameters such as crimp angle. Normalization scheme was performed to compare tow parameter variations with different forming conditions. Stress-strain .elations of two different PVC foams (HT70 and HT110) were tested to investigate the effect of foam property on the micro-tow deformation during forming.

Fabrication of Macroporous Carbon Foam with Uniform Pore Size Using Poly(methyl methacrylate) Particles As The Template

  • Herein, macroporous carbon materials were readily prepared by carbonization of cured body of resorcinol and formaldehyde using poly(methyl methacrylate) colloid microspheres which were employed as the template in the gelation of resorcinol with formaldehyde. The gel in the water was solvent exchanged with methanol and the wet gel was dried. After carbonization of the template-gel composite at $800^{\circ}C$, it was found that pores were left corresponding to the size of the template, yielding carbon materials with a fine porous structure with enlarged surface area and significant porosity. Properties of the carbon foams including the structure, morphology, thermal stability, and porosity were investigated. Finally, it was concluded that the method using polymer colloids as the template provided a facile route to prepare carbon foams.
