A synthesis and cation-induced fluorescent behavior of the carbazole-attached $NO_2S_2$-macrocycle (L) is described and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray analysis. The photoluminescence spectrum of L in 80% $CH_3CN/CH_2Cl_2$ displays a peak maximum at 431 nm (blue emission). In the metal-induced fluorometric experiment, L showed a drastic chelation-enhanced fluorescence quenching (CHEQ) effect only with $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$. In ESI-mass study, a 1:1 stoichiometry for complexation of L with $Hg^{2+}$ was confirmed, suggesting the unique sensing behavior of the proposed ligand L due to the selective complexation affinity for $Hg^{2+}$. The observed results indicate that L is a promising turn-off type fluoroionophore for $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ detections. Additionally, the $Ag^+$ complex of the precursor macrocycle was prepared and its solid structure was crystallographically characterized.
Lectins and its A- and B-chains from Korean mistletoe (Viscum album var. coloratum) were isolated by affinity chromatography on the Sepharose 4B modified by lactose-BSA conjugate synthesized by reductive amination of ligand (lactose) to .epsilon.-amino groups of lysine residues of spacer (BSA) after reduction by $NaCNBH_3$. The lactose-BSA conjugate was coupled to Sepharose 4B activated by cyanogen bromide. The molecular weight determined by SDS-PAGE were a 31 kD of A-chain and a 35kD of B-chain. Amino acid analysis and N-terminal sequencing were performed. The effects of pH, temperature and guanidine chloride on the conformation of the lectin were investigated by measuring its intrinsic fluorescence and compared with its hemagglutinating activities. Blue shift was detected on the acidic pH and there was a close relationship between activities and conformation of the lectin. Under denaturing conditions, the tryptophan emission profile of lectin showed typical denaturaiional red shift which also correspond to the conformations and activity of lectin.

The accelerated thermal aging of CSPE(chloro sulfonate polyethylene) of test cables were carried out for the period equal to 10, 20 and 30 years in air at $100^{\circ}C$, respectively. The CSPE cables(TAIHAN electric wire Co. Ltd) which installed in nuclear power plant for three years were used as starting materials. Condition monitering methods of the accelerated thermal aging of CSPE cables were estimated through indenter modulus and OIT(oxidation induction time) of IEC 62582, and those were newly estimated through volume electrical resistivity, ultrasound reflection time, density, FE-SEM(field emission scanning electron microscopy), XPS(x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), EDS(energy dispersive spectroscopy), and WD-XRF(wavelength dispersive x-ray fluorescence). A new condition monitoring methods of the accelerated thermal aging of CSPE cables were generally coincident with trend of indenter modulus expect EDS, XPS and XRF. A volume electrical resistivity among new condition monitoring methods of the accelerated thermal aging of CSPE cables is excellent. It is considered that life-time of CSPE cable can be predicted through volume electrical resistivity, if CSPE jacket was aged for period such as more than 20 years.
In order to develop a protocol to quantify cyanobacteria and Microcystis simultaneously, the primers and probe were designed from the conserved regions of 16S rRNA gene sequences of cyanobacteria and Microcystis, respectively. Probe match analysis of the Ribosomal Database Project showed that the primers matched with over 97% of cyanobacterial 16S rRNA genes, indicating these can be used to amplify cyanobacteria specifically. The TaqMan probe, which is located between two primers, matched with 98.2% of sequences in genus GpXI, in which most Microcystis strains are included. The numbers of cyanobacterial genes were estimated with the emission of SYBR Green from the amplicons with two primers, whereas those of Microcystis spp. were measured from the fluorescence of CAL Fluor Gold 540 emitted by exonuclease activity of Taq DNA polymerase in amplification. It is expected that this method enhances the accuracy and reduces the time to count cyanobacteria and potential toxigenic Microcystis spp. in aquatic environmental samples.

Recently, people have concerned about environmental pollution. This environmental pollution occur due to many reasons such as heavy metal ions and anions. In this regard, many researchers have studied organic materials to monitor above reasons to protect environmental pollution. One of the organic materials for this function is chemosensor. This chemosensor has been studied and reported about monitoring toxic heavy metal ions and anions. In this study, the dye sensor was designed and synthesized through reaction of Rhodamine 6G and 1,3-Indanedion. this dye sensor selective detected $Hg^{2+}$ metal ions while showing red color absorption and yellowish-green strong fluorescence emission compared to other heavy metal ions such as $Cu^{2+}$, $Hg^{2+}$, $Ag^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$. In this regard, we anticipated that this dye senosr can provide an significant material for monitoring mercury which cause environmental pollution. Thus, We investigated detailed properties of this dye sesnor with using UV-Vis absorption and fluorescent spectrophotometer, Job's plot method for metal binding complex, computational simulated calculation named Material Studio 4.3 suite to approach for electron distribution and HOMO/LUMO.

The water soluble quantum dots (QDs) are synthesized by the phase transfer and silica coating reaction. The photoluminescence intensity of silica-coated QDs are mainly affected by the amount of phase transfer agent, SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate), and the maximum value is obtained at the cmc (critical micell concentration) concentration of SDS in the phase transfer reaction. Based on fluorescence spectra and field emission transmission electron microscope (FETEM), the energy transfer rate by forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is increasing with the thickness of the silica shell coated on CdSe/ZnS QDs.
This study examined the photoemission behaviors of isolated chains of poly[2-methoxy, 5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene](MEH-PPV) dispersed in various solvents including dichloromethane, chloroform and tetrahydrofuran(THF). A change in polymer-solvent interactions in these solutions caused the MEH-PPV chains to adopt different local conformations, which in turn affected their radiative de-excitation pathways. For the polymer in dichloromethane and chloroform, in which the conjugated chains are relatively extended, photoemission occurs mostly at the long chromophores with lowest HOMO-LUMO energy gap. Their emission spectra showed a main peak at ${\sim}560\;nm$. Dual photoemission of high- and low-energy chromophores was observed when the conjugated chains were forced to partially collapse in a poor solvent THF. Novel high-energy peaks and a typical low-energy peak were detected at ${\sim}414\;nm$ and ${\sim}554\;nm$, respectively. The observation of the high-energy peaks indicates significant suppression of the intrachain energy transfer process, which was attributed to the increase in conformational disorder in the partially collapsed coils. An analysis of the excitation spectra suggests that the high-energy peaks belong to short chromophores constituting of one or two repeat units. This study systematically investigated the effects of polymer concentration, temperature and single bond defects along the backbone on the photoemission of the high-energy chromophores.
The differences in pharmacokinetic behavior and tissue distribution of verapamil and its enantiomers were investigated in rats. In high-performance liquid chromatographic method, an achiral ODS column (150 mm $\times$ 4.6 mm i.d.) with the mobile phase consisting of methanol-water (73:30, v/v) was used for the determination of the concentration for racemic verapamil, and a Chiralcel OJ column (250 mm$\times$4.6 mm i.d.) with the mixture of n-haxane-ethanol-triethylamine (85:15:0.2, v/v/v) as mobile phase was used to determine the concentrations of verapamil enantiomers. A fluorescence detector in the analytical system was set at excitation and emission wavelengths of 275 nm and 315 nm. The differences between enantiomers were apparent in the pharmacokinetics in rats. The area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) of S-(-) verapamil was higher than that of R-(+) verapamil. The half-distribution time ($T_{1/2(\alpha)}$) of S-(-) verapamil which distributing to tissue from blood was shorter than that of R-(+) verapamil, but the elimination half-time ($T_{1/2(\beta)}$) was longer in rat following oral administration of racemic verapamil. At 1.3 h after oral administration of racemic verapamil, however, there were no significant differences between enantiomers for the distributions in major tissues such as heart, cerebrum, cerebellum, liver, spleen and kidney.
This study investigated the fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a water reclamation facility (WRF) in Korea. The WRF consists of coagulation, sedimentation, microfiltration, and reverse osmosis (RO) components. The production capacity of WRF is 90,000 m3/day. The reclaimed water is reused as industrial water. We also characterized DOM in raw, processed, and finished waters based on analysis of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UVA254), fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM), and DOC fractions via liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection (LC-OCD). Based on the results of DOC, UVA254, and FEEM analyses, neither the coagulation/sedimentation nor the microfiltration at the WRF effectively removed DOM. The RO process removed more than 94% of DOM. The raw water (i.e., secondary treated effluent obtained from a wastewater treatment plant) exhibited tryptophan-like peaks, which are a promising marker of wastewater, in the FEEM analysis. Coagulation and microfiltration failed to eliminate the wastewater marker, whereas RO completely removed it. The raw water also carried high levels (89.4%) of hydrophilic and low-molecular weight substances, which are difficult to remove via coagulation-sedimentation or microfiltration. Humic substance was a major component of the hydrophilic fractions. Based on the LC-OCD analysis, RO effectively removed the humic and polymeric materials from DOM.

The succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase which is one of the key enzyme of GABA shunt in CNS has been purified from bovine brain homogeneously for the first time. The molecular mass of the native enzyme was estimated to be approximately 110,000 on gel filtration, The subunit molecular mass was determined by SDS-PAGE to be 54,000. These results indicate that the enzyme is a dimeric protein made up to identical subunits. Chemical modification studies of the enzyme suggest that the critical lysyl, connected with catalytic activity of the enzyme, The binding of IAF-SSDH(enzyme tagged with fluoreceine) to GABA transaminase which catalyzes the degradation of GABA was monitored by steady emission anisotropy. The changes of fluorescence anisotropy by interactions between two enzymes suggest that the formation of enzyme cluster must be invoved in the regulation of GABA concentration in brain tissues. The inhibitory effects of some antiepileptic and anticonvulsant drugs on the enzyme were also examined.
