  • The objectives of this study were to examine the start-up method and characteristics of biomass attachment on the media in an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor(AFBR). The media adopted was the granular activated carbon which was successfully capable of adsorbing organics and biomass. The reactor was operated at 5 kg $COD/m^3\cdot day$ and 24hr of HRT. There were important problems in the AFBR's start-up, which has been reported very long and unstable. Therefore, this research was to solve the problem of the start-up and it was performed, comparing two start-up ways that were initial fluidized system and initial static-fluidized system. The results were summarized as follows: (1) On the whole initial static-fluidized system was superior to initial fluidized system in the aspects of biogas production rate, methane content and COD removal efficiency etc. (2) At the steady state methane production rate and recoverable bioenergy of initial static-fluidized system were $2.074 m^3CH_4/m^3\cdot day$, $0.488 m^3CH_4/kgCOD_{removed}\cdot day$, and 81.3kcal/day, respectively. (3) Thickness of biofilm was about $5.11 \mu m$, $\rho_{bw}$ and $\rho_{bd}$ were $1.022 g/cm^3, 0.0953g/cm^3$ respectively. (4) Biomass concentration of fluidized state was about 35 mg/g GAC. In conclusion the efficient method on the start-up of the AFBR using GAC as media was initial static-fluidized system and the period of static state needed to reach steady state was considered about twenty days.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate fluidization characteristics of three solid particles, correlations between voidage and superficial velocity. The inside diameter of a column did not affect the fraction void-superficial velocity relationship for fluidization systems which was obtained as follows: $\frac{u}{u_t}={\varepsilon}^{3.703}----Sea\;Sand$ $\frac{u}{u_t}={\varepsilon}^{3.5665}----long\;Exchange$ $\frac{u}{u_t}={\varepsilon}^{4.066}----GAC$ And the sphericial type media is good for fluidized systems as it maintains low voidage. Actually, if biofilm attached to media (bioparticle), the density became lower in fluidized bed biofilm reactor. Therefore, as the density of media become higher, it is easy to maintain fluidized beds.

  • A fluidized bed reactor containing porous media has been known to be effective for nitrogen and organic matters removal in wastewater. The porous media which attached microbes plays important roles in simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) due to coexistence of oxic, anaerobic and anoxic zone. For SND reaction, oxygen and organic substrates should be effectively diffused from wastewater into the intra-carrier zone. However, the overgrowth heterotrophic microbes at the surface of porous media may restrict from substrates diffusion. From these viewpoints, the existence and effect of heterotrophic bacteria at surface of porous media might be the key point for nitrogen removal. A porous media-membrane hybrid process was found to have improved nitrogen removal efficiency, due to stimulated denitrification as well as nitrification. Microelectrode studies revealed that although intra-media denitrification rate in a conventional fluidized bed was limited by organic carbon, this limitation was reduced in the hybrid process, resulting in the increased denitrification rate from 0.5 to $4.2\; mgNO_3-N/L/hr$.

  • The existing two-phase biological fluidized bed has some problems such as limit of oxygen transfer and blockade of fluidized distributor. In this study, three-phase swirl flow biological fluidized bed has designed to solve the problems and to investigate its running characteristics. TOC of influent synthetic wastewater was approximately $70mg/{\ell}$. HRT of reactor was 1.6 hours. Mean particle size of sand, as packing media, was 0.397mm and packing volume was varied from $200m{\ell}/{\ell}$ to $600m{\ell}/{\ell}$ by stages in the bed. The amount of biomass and effluent water quality was throughly investigated in the bed. Showing experiment results from the above conditions, it was possible to solve the problems of existing fluidized bed and to keep DO of $3mg/{\ell}$ or more. And it was also TOC removal rate of 91 to 94 %, MLVSS of 2,360 to $3,860mg/{\ell}$, MLVSS per g-media of 8.4 to 17.3 mg/g, F/M ratio of 0.59 to $1.04kg-TOC/kg-MLVSS{\cdot}day$, biofilm thickness of $35{\sim}71{\mu}m$ and sludge productivity of 1.03 to $2.35kg-SS/m^3{\cdot}day$. Optimal conditions in this experimental were as follows.; those were biofilm thickness of approximately $54{\mu}m$. MLVSS per g-media of 13 mg and media packing volume of 350 to $400m{\ell}/{\ell}$ when F/M ratio was low, treatment efficiency was high and sludge productivity was low. Showing the media with optics microscope in this optimal condition, attached microbes such as Epistylis sp. were observed. From SEM photographs, it showed that Coccus adhere to and grow on the media surface.

  • Process intensification without any increase in bed requires the exploitation of fluid mechanical phenomena as the basis for elegant solutions to the process engineering problems which result from the need to retain and control the immobilized biomass, and for biomass recovery. The fluidized bed biological reactor provides a solution to these needs. The wastewater treatment characteristics of the fluidized bed was filled with sand media. Indirect aeration were studied experimentally. The researcher was filled with sand particle size(0.60~0.42mm) in three reactors with different section area(A)/height(H), in the state BOD loading 4.5kg-$BOD_5/m^3$ㆍd, and under the fixed state of hydraulic retention time for around 32 minutes.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate capability of dyeing wastewater treatment for 3 type reactors. These reactors were Packed Bed Reactor(PBR), Fluidized Bed reactor(FBR) and Moving Media Complete Mixing Activated Sludge reactor(MMCMAS). Experiments of PBR and FBR were performed by various packing ratios and organic loading rates, experiments of MMCMAS were performed by various organic loading rates. In order to obtain ${SBOD}_5$ removal efficiencies of more than 90%, the F/Mv ratios of PBR, FBR, MMCMAS were 0.11 kgBOD/kgMLVSS$\cdot$d, 0.12 kgBOD/kgMLVSS$\cdot$d, and 0.37 kgBOD/kgMLSS$\cdot$d, respectively. So MMCMAS system which has more active microorganisms showed better capability of organic removal and also stronger dynamic and shock loadings than those of PBR and FBR. In PBR and FBR, the media packing ratio of 20% showed better performance of organic matters removal effciencies than 10% and 30%, but sludge production rate at media packing ratio of 30% was relatively lower than that of 10% and 20%. When more than 90% organic matters removal efficiency was obtained, the ratios of attached biomass to total biomass at PBR, FBR, MMCMAS were 89~99%, 87~98%, and 54~80%, respectively. The ratio of attached biomass to total biomass was low in MMCMAS. This was formation of thin biofilm due to shear force between rotaing disc and water. The average sludge production rates(kgVSS/kgBODrem.) of PBR, FBR and MMCMAS were 0.20, 0.29 and 0.54, respectively.

  • An acidic, real metal-plating wastewater was treated by a fluidized bed membrane reactor introduced with granular activated carbon (GAC) as fluidized media. With GAC fluidization, there was no increase in suction pressure with time at each flux set-point applied. At neutral solution pH, much less fouling rate was observed than acidic pH under GAC fluidization. Higher solution pH resulted in the increase in particle size in metal-finishing wastewater, thus producing a less dense cake structure on membrane. More than 95% of chemical oxygen demand was observed from the fluidized bed membrane reactor under GAC fluidization. Total suspended solid concentration in membrane permeate was near zero. At the raw wastewater pH, no removal of copper and chromium by the fluidized bed membrane reactor was observed. As the pH was increased to 7.0, removal efficiency of copper and chromium was increased considerably to 99 and 94%, respectively. Regardless of solution pH tested, more than 95% of cyanide was removed possibly due to the strong adsorption of organic-cyanide complex on GAC in fluidized bed membrane reactor.

  • The engineering aspect of water treatment processes in the recirculating aquaculture system was studied. To recycle the water in the aquaculture system, a wastewater treatment process was required to maintain high water quality for the growth and health of the cultured fish. In this study, three different biofilm processes were used to reduce the concentration of organic matters and ammonia from the recirculating water - two phase fluidized bed, three phase fluidized bed, and trickling filter. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the optimum treatment conditions of the biofilm processes for the recirculating aquaculture system, and thereby reduce the volume of biofilm processes, which are commonly used for the recycle water treatment processes for aquaculture. The result of this study showed that the removal efficiency of organic matters by trickling filter was found to be lower than that of the fluidized bed. In the trickling filter system, anthracite showed better organic removal efficiency than crushed stone as a media. In the two phase fluidized bed, the maximum removal efficiency of either organics or ammonia was obtained when both the packing rate of media was maintained to $40\%$ of total reactor depth excepting sediment zone and the bed expansion rate was maintained to $100\%$. When 100 tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) of each average 200g was reared, the pollutant production rate was 0.07g $NH_4\;^+-N/kg$ fish/day and 0.06g P04-3-P/kg fish/day, and sludge production rate was 0.39 g SS/kg fish/day. In the two phase and three phase fluidized bed, the volume of water treatment tank could be calculated from an empirical equation by using the relationship between the influent COD to $NH_4\;^+-N$ ratio (C/N, -), media concentration (Cm, g/L), influent ammonia nitrogen concentration (Ni, mg/L), effluent ammonia nitrogen concentration (Ne, mg/L), bed expansion rate $(E,\;\%)$, and influent flowrate $(Q,\;m^3/hr)$. The empirical equation from this study is $$V_2\;=\;10^{3.1279}\;C/N^{3.5461}\;C_m\;^{-3.7473}\;N_i\;^{4.6477}\;E^{0.0326}\;N_e\;^{-0..8849}\;Q\;(Two\;Phase\;FB) V_3\;=\;10^{11.7507}\;C/N^{-1.2330}\;C_m\;^{-6.5715}\;N_i\;^{1.5091}\;N_e\;^{-1.8489}\;Q (Three\;Phase\;FB)$$

  • This study was performed to estimate the characteristics of the organic wastewater treatment and bed porosity with the circulation velocity in the anaerobic fluidized bed biofilm reactor. The results were as follows; 1. With Increasing circulation velocity the fluidized bed expanded smooth and with increasing initial particle volume the fluidized bed was increased. 2. With increasing circulation velocity the gasproduction was increased, but at 1.Scnt/sec of circulation velocity AFBBR showed the highest value of methane production rate per removed COD. Therefore, for the purpose of economical operation in AFBBR, 1.5cm/sec of circulation velocity was optimum 3. The microorganisms were colonized in the crevice of the media. 4. On fluidization, COD, VA,55 profiles with the reactor height were not showed. In conclusion, AFBBR suit the organic wastewater treatment's purpose, and at 1.5cm/sec of circulation velocity the system is economical in an energy Point of view.

  • The removal of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) from aqueous media was investigated using Thiobacillus novellas cells immobilized on a $SiO_2$ carrier (biosand). The optimal growth conditions for the bacterial strain were $30^{\circ}C$ and initial pH of 7.0. The main product of hydrogen sulfide oxidation by T. novellus was identified as the sulfate ion. A removal efficiency of 98% was maintained in the three-phase fluidized-bed reactor, whereas the efficiency was reduced to 90% for the two-phase fluidized-bed reactor and 68% for the two-phase reactor without cells. The maximum gas removal capacity for the system was 254 g $H_2S/m^3/h$ when the inlet $H_2S$ loading was $300g/m^3/h(1,500ppm)$. Stable operation of the immobilized reactor was possible for 20 days with the inlet $H_2S$ concentration held to 1,100 ppm. The fluidized bed bioreactor appeared to be an effective means for controlling hydrogen sulfide emissions.
