This paper deals with the optimal muffler model by using acoustic analysis and CFD(computational fluid dynamics) analysis. The complicated muffler model could be better noise reduction performance. However, it could be worse affected to back-pressure performance by pressure drop in working fluid. High back-pressure is caused to low system efficiency. Therefore, it is important for the muffler design to consider the pressure drop. The muffler models are changed their partition plate position. Acoustic power transmission loss(TL) and pressure drop of working fluid are calculated by using computational analysis and used to build database for finding their trends. The optimal muffler model in user-interested frequency range could be selected by analyzing this database.
The effect of channel cutback on three-dimensional flow fields and aerodynamic losses downstream of a cavity squealer tip has been investigated in a turbine rotor cascade for the squealer rim height-to-chord ratio and tip gap height-to-chord ratio of $h_{st}/c$ = 5.51% and h/c = 2.0% respectively. The cutback length-to-camber ratio is changed to be $CB/c_c$ = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. The results show that longer cutback delivers not only stronger secondary flow but also higher aerodynamic loss in the tip leakage vortex region, meanwhile it leads to lower aerodynamic loss in the passage vortex region. The discharge of cavity fluid through the cutback opening provides a beneficial effect in the reduction of aerodynamic loss, whereas there also exists a side effect of aerodynamic loss increase due to local wider tip gap near the trailing edge. With increasing $CB/c_c$ from 0.0 to 0.3, the aerodynamic loss coefficient mass-averaged all over the measurement plane tends to increase slightly.
Electrorheological(ER) fluid's storage shear modulus(G') and loss factor(${\eta}$) have been directly measured using small amplitude forced oscillating rheometer as a function of oscillating frequency, strain amplitude and applied electric field. Two types of experiment were performed , (a) frequency sweep and (b) amplitude sweep. Two kinds of sample were employed for this experiment ; cornstarch particles in corn oil and zeolite particles in silicone oil. The storage shear modulus was a strong function of driving frequency. Generally, the modulus increased with driving frequency. On the other hand, the loss factor was not well behaved as storage modulus, but as the driving frequency increases the loss factor slightly decreases was the trend of the material's characteristics. Also the modulus was a strong function of strain amplitude. Generally, modulus decreased with increasing strain, but loss factor increases slightly with increasing strain amplitude. For G', cornstarch in corn oil ER fluid has higher values than zeolite based fluid as we increased applied electric field. On the other hand, zeolite based fluid has higher values for ${\eta}$. There is a reasonable agreement between theoretical calculation and experiment.

The mixture of bentonite powder and water is generally used to maintain the stability of excavation surface during the construction of vertical cutoff walls. The filter cake on the sidewall surface is the result of filtration of slurry into the adjacent soil formation. The filter cake is believed to have a very low hydraulic conductivity compared to that of the cutoff wall. This paper evaluates hydraulic conductivities of bentonite filter cakes set up with three types of bentonites under various pressure levels. A modified fluid loss test was employed in this experiment. Theory of filtration process was reviewed to explain the procedure in the present experiment. Hydraulic conductivity of the filter cakes with consideration of the filter medium resistance was evaluated. The results of the experiment with two calculation methods and discussion are presented to show the efficiency of the modified fluid loss test.

The performance of stilting engine, in particular, its energy conversion efficiencies are critically influenced by the regenerator characteristics. The regenerator characteristics are influenced by effectiveness, void fraction. heat transfer loss and fluid friction loss in the regenerator matrix. These factors were influenced by the surface geometry and material properties of the regenerator matrix. The regenerator design goals arc good heat transfer and low pressure drop of working Bas across the regenerator. Various data for designing a wire screen matrix have been given by Kays and London(1984). The mesh number of their experiment. however, was confined below the No. 60. which seems rather small for the Stirling engine applications. In this paper. in order to provide a basic data for the design of regenerator matrix, characteristics of heat transfer and flow friction loss were investigated by a packed mettled of matrix in oscillating flow as the same condition of operation in a Stirling engine. Seven kinds of sing1e wire screen meshes were used as the regenerator matrices. The results are summarized as follows; 1. While the working fluid flew slowly in the regenerator. the temperature difference was great at the both hot-blow(the working fluid flows from healer to cooler) and cold-blow(the working fluid flows from cooler to healer). On the other hand. while the working fluid flew fast. the temperature difference was not distinguished. 2. The No.150 wire screen used as the regenerator matrix showed excellent performance than tile others. 3. Phase angle variation and filling rate affected heat transfer or regenerator matrices. 4. Temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the regenerator is very hish in degree of 120 phase angle.
A computational study on the improvement of the pressure loss of intake system, which is located at engine manifold of the combat vehicle, has been conducted using a finite-volume-based, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver. The computational result of the pressure loss through the air cleaner is in good agreement with equivalent experimental data. A parametric study was done for improving of the pressure loss of intake system over the baseline case. The effects of five primary parameters such as the height of inlet, the width of interconnection pipe, the shape of drain chamber and the diameter of filter housing were considered in this study. Consequently, this computational investigation can contribute to finding an optimal guideline for the idea of improvement in the pressure loss of intake system.

It is a serous subject for energy conservation to prevent the energy loss caused by the mixture of heated and cooled air jets in perimeter and interior zone of a building operated with tow kinds of air-conditioning system simultaneously. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the quantitative and qualitative mechanisms of mixing loss and to propose a evaluation method for it. By using the dynamic heat load calculation, heat extraction load of a typical office building in Busan are calculated. According to the results, numerical simulations based on CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) were performed in order to evaluate mixing loss in the physical size of HVAC system. Then, the distributions of air temperature and airflow patterns according to the differences of set-point temperature are analyzed to grasp relations how to influence mixing loss.
This study proposes a modified bifurcation model with a computational fluid analysis according to variation of a bifurcation geometry. FLUENT is used for a calculation of the head losses in case of a generation and a pumping. The pressure, velocity field and turbulent intensity are simulated in a bifurcation. With consideration about these flow properties, we propose the modified model to improve a flow efficiency and reduce a sound. The proposed model is able to cut down a head loss by 45% when a generation and 36% when a pumping.
It had been disputed how to apply wall drag to the dispersed phase in the framework of the conventional two-fluid model for two-phase flows. Recently, Kim et al. [1] introduced the volume-averaged momentum equation based on the equation of a solid/fluid particle motion. They showed theoretically that for dispersed two-phase flows, the overall two-phase pressure drop by wall friction must be apportioned to each phase, in proportion to each phase fraction. In this study, the validity of the proposed wall drag model is demonstrated though one-dimensional (1D) simulations. In addition, it is shown that the existing form loss model incorrectly predicts the motion of the dispersed phase. A new form loss model is proposed to overcome that problem. The newly proposed form loss model is tested in the region covering the lower plenum and the core in a nuclear power plant. As a result, it is shown that the new models can correctly predict the relative velocity of the dispersed phase to the surrounding fluid velocity in the core with spacer grids.
