Fossil power plants firing lower grade coals or equipped with modified system for $NO_x$ controls are challenged with maintaining good combustion conditions while maximizing generation and minimizing emissions. In many cases significant derate, availability losses and increase in unburned carbon levels can be attributed to poor combustion conditions as a result of poorly controlled local fuel and air distribution within the boiler furnace. In order to develop a on-line combustion tuning system, field test was conducted at operating power boiler. During the field test the exhaust gases' $O_2,\;NO_x$ and CO was monitored by using a spatially distributed monitoring grid located in the boiler's high temperature vestibule and upper convective rear pass region. At these locations, the flue gas flow is still significantly stratified, and air in-leakage is minimal which enables tracing of poor combustion zones to specific burners and over-fire air ports. using these monitored information we can improving combustion at every point within the furnace, therefore the boiler can operate at reduced excess $O_2$ and gas temperature deviation, reduced furnace exit gas temperature levels while also reducing localized hot spots, corrosive gas conditions, slag or clinker formation and UBC. Benefits include improving efficiency, reducing $NO_x$ emissions, increasing output and maximizing availability. Discussion concerning the reduction of greenhouse gases is prevalent in the world. When taking a practical approach to addressing this problem, the best way and short-term solution to reduce greenhouse gases on coal-fired power plants is to improve efficiency. From this point of view the real time optimized combustion tuning approach is the most effective and implemented with minimal cost.
High temperature air combustion technology has been utilized by using preheated air over 1100 K and excessive exhaust gas recirculation. Numerical analysis was performed to investigate the combustion characteristics with high temperature deficient oxygen air combustion by adopting a counterflow as a model problem accounting for detailed chemical kinetics. Methane($CH_4$) was used as a test fuel and calculated oxidizer conditions were low temperature high oxygen (300K, $X_{O2}=0.21$) and high temperature low oxygen (1300K, $X_{O2}=0.04$) conditions. The latter case showed that the flame temperature is lower than the former case and its profile showed monotonic decrease from oxidizer to fuel side, without having local maximum flame temperature at high stretch rate. Also, heat release rate was one order lower and it has one peak profile because of low oxygen concentration and heat release rate integral is almost same for stretch rate. High temperature low oxygen air combustion shows low NO emission characteristics.
Most of combustion processess used in industries require recovering or removing flue gas components. Recently a new MBA (moving bed adsorption) process for recovering $CO_2$ using zeolite 13X was developed. In this study, adsorption experiments for carbon dioxide, nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, and water vapor on zeolite 13X were carried out. Adsorption equilibrium and adsorption rate into solid particle were investigated. Langmuir, Toth, and Freundlich isotherm parameters were calculated from the experiment data at various temperatures. Experimental results were consistent with the theoretically predicted values. Also $CO_2$ adsorption amount was measured under the conditions with impurities such as $SO_2$ and $H_2O$. Binary adsorption data were well fitted to the extended Langmuir isotherm using parameters obtained from pure component experiment. However, $H_2O$ impurity less than, roughly, ${\sim}10^{-5}H_2O\;mol/g$ zeolite 13X enhanced slightly $CO_2$ adsorption. Spherical particle diffusion model well described experimentally measured adsorption rate. Diffusion coefficients and activation energies of $CO_2$, $SO_2$, $N_2$, $H_2O$ were obtained. Diffusion coefficients of $CO_2$ and $SO_2$ decreased with small amount of preadsorbed impurity. Parameter values from this study will be helpful to design of real commercial adsorption process.

This study investigated mercury emission at various combustion conditions and analyzed mercury species in flue gas from coal combustion at a laboratory scale furnace in coal. The results of this study can be used to predict and to assess mercury emission at coal boilers and power plants. The coal used in the plants generally contains about $0.02{\sim}0.28\;mg$ of mercury per kg. Bituminous and anthracite coal used for the experiment contained 0.049 and 0.297 mg/kg of mercury, respectively. Mercury emissions during coal combustion at temperatures range of $600^{\circ}C$ to $1,400^{\circ}C$ was measured and analysed using Ontario Hydro method; the speciation changes were also observed in mercury emissions. The results showed higher fraction of elemental mercury than that of oxidised mercury at most temperatures tested in this experiment. The fraction of elemental mercury was lower in combustion of anthracite coal than in bituminous combustion. As expected, equilibrium calculations and real power plants data showed good similarity. The distribution of particle size in flue gas had the higher peak in size above $2.5\;{\mu}m$. However the peak of mercury enrichment in dust was at $0.3\;{\mu}m$, which could be easily emitted into atmosphere without filtration in combustion system. When the CEA(Chemical equilibrium and Application) code was used for combustion equilibrium calculation, Cl was found to be the important component effecting mercury oxidation, especially at the lower temperatures under $900^{\circ}C$.

In order to minimize emission of polychlorinated dibenzo dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo furans (PCDD/PCDFs) from municipal solid waste incinerators, it is important to maintain optimized operating conditions along with the system modification/improvement. Operating conditions of MSW incinerator make very complicated influence on formation of PCDD/PCDFs in each unit apparatus. For revealing these influences, concentrations of PCDD/PCDFs are measured from the stack and from the fly ash, while monitoring the plant operating conditions. The effects are grouped into 3 main categories, combustion conditions, de Novo synthesis effects, and adsorption/destruction effects in the flue gas treatment system. Interpretation of the results showed that de Novo synthesis effect, reformation by metalic catalyst, especially Cu in fly ash in the temperature range of $250{\sim}500^{\circ}C$, is found to influence most dominantly on the concentration of PCDD/PCDFs. A plausible mathmatical model for predicting concentration of PCDD/PCDFs is proposed, and discussed.

This study was carried out to develop an efficient process abating high NO concentration. A hybrid process of selective catalytic reduction(SCR) and activated carbon fiber(ACF) adsorption was newly designed and tested. Used ACF in NO adsorption was regenerated by simultaneously applying heat and vacuum. The result of ACF regeneration was for superior in the desorption condition at $140^{\circ}C$ and vacuum 600 mmHg. A commercial catalyst was used at the conditions of reaction temperature at $300^{\circ}C$, $NH_3/NO$ mole ratio = 1.0 for SCR process. NO evolved from ACF regeneration reactor could be removed by SCR reactor up to 98%. But high concentration of NO was exhausted from SCR reactor for one minute when the flue gas of NO 300 ppm and deserted NO from ACF regeneration were simultaneously treated by the same SCR reactor. Therefore, it is necessary to use additional small sized SCR reactor or to increase $NH_3$ concentration for a short time along with NO concentration rather than to mix flue gas with the gas evolving from ACF regeneration at fixed $NH_3$ inlet concentration. The hybrid process of SCR and ACF showed high NO removal efficiency over 80% at any time courses. Through the repeated cycles, stable DeNOx efficiency was maintained, indicating that the hybrid process would be a good countermeasure to the spotaneously high NO concentration instead of increasing the SCR capacity.

A pilot-scale Spray Drying Sorber (SDS) system was set up to evaluate the effect of spray characteristics on the desulfurization yield. The size distribution and the Sauter Mean Diameters of slurry droplets were measured in advance using the optical size measurement system, Malvern 2600. The desulfurization yield of the drying chamber by size was measured for the conditions of inlet gas and spray injection. As a reagent, 10% limestone slurry of $Ca(OH)_2$ was treated with flue gas containing $SO_2$, and the combustion gas analyzer and gas detectors were attached to measure the $SO_2$ concentration. With a flow rate of 144 Nm3/h and a temperature range of $200{\sim}300^{\circ}C$, the experiments were performed for the Stoichiometric Ratio (SR) of 1.0 to 3.0 and droplet mean diameter of 6.5 to $34.3{\mu}m$. In case of smaller spray droplets, the desulfurization efficiency improved due to the increase of total droplet surface area, while the reduction in evaporation time reduced the contact time between the droplets and $SO_2$ gas. In some typical region of droplet diameter, this negative effect, reduction of contact time, became dominant and the desulfurization yield decreases the desulfurization yield in spite of the expansion in absorption area. These results revealed that there exists the optimal size of spray droplets for a given state, which is determined by the compromise between the total surface area of slurry droplets and the evaporation time of droplets. The measurements also indicated that the inlet temperature of flue gas changes the optimal injection condition by varying the driving force for evaporation. The results confirm that the effect of the evaporation time of slurry droplets should be considered in analyzing the desulfurization yield as well as the total surface area, for it is a significant aspect of the correlation with the capabilities of $SO_2$ absorption in wet droplets. In conclusion, the optimal condition of spray can be determined based on these results, which might be applied to design or scale-up of SDS system.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process is the most widely applied technology for the denitrification of coal-fired power plant flue gases due to its selectivity and high efficiency. In order to attain the optimum design of SCR process, it is required to consider various catalysis characteristics as well as various operating conditions. A systematic study to elucidate the effects of the design conditions(reaction temperature, $NH_3/NO$ mole ratio, space velocity and linear velocity) on the reduction of NOx using the SCR pilot plant with maximum flue gas flow rate of $1,000Nm^3/hr$ was carried out and employed to identify the optimum design parameters. Design approaches of SCR process with test results were also presented.

Microalgae has been seen all over the seawater and several species are used for human food. Specially, Nannochloropsis oculata, a photosynthetic microalgae, has been focused for a vast array of valuable nutritious compounds. In order to find high mass Nannochloropsis oculata culture conditions, some of important growth factors of pH, temperature, culture media, and $CO_2$ effect were tested. The optimal growth condition was found to be as follows : 3% artificial seawater, initial pH 8.5, and temperature $25^{\circ}C$. The alga mass and chlorophyll content were dramatically increased by applying 5% flue $CO_2$ gas (1.50 g/L algae in a continuous $CO_2$ flue; 0.76 g/L alga without $CO_2$). It was shown that the chlorophyll biosynthesis was also closely associated with alga growth.

In this study, alkanolamine was used to achieve high absorption rates for $CO_2$ as suggested at several literatures. The absorption rates of aqueous AMP and MEA solutions with $CO_2$, $SO_2$, $NO_2$ were measured using a stirredcell reactor. The reaction rate constants were determined from the measured absorption rates. The performances were evaluated under various operating conditions. As a result, the reactions with $SO_2$, $NO_2$ into aqueous AMP and MEA solutions were classified as an instantaneous reaction respectively. The absorption rates increased with increase of the reaction temperature and the concentration of absorbents. The simultaneous absorption rate of $CO_2/SO_2/NO_2$ into 3, 5, 10 wt.% MEA at various pressure of $CO_2/SO_2/NO_2$, was more increased 14~20% than AMP solution. We investigated the effect of $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ on the simultaneous absorption of $CO_2/SO_2/NO_2$ from a flue gas. The performances were evaluated under various operating conditions in order to investigate the absorption characteristic.
