Temperature history of very small interstellar dust particles is followed under diffuse interstellar radiation. Because of extremely small thermal capacities of these grains with sizes ranging from a few tens to hundred Angstroms in radii, they are to experience strong fluctuations in temperature whenever they are hit by interstellar ultraviolet photons. Fluctuating temperature can inhibit these smaller component of interstellar dust from growing into core-mantle particles of submicron sizes by continuously evaporating atoms and molecules adsorbed on their surface. This is interpreted as a possible physical reason for the bimodal nature in grain size distribution. A brief discussion is also given to the far infrared emission properties of such small grains in diffuse interstellar dust clouds.
The technique of proper orthogonal decomposition is potentially useful in specifying the fluctuating surface pressure field around structures. However there has been a degree of controversy over whether or not the calculated modes have physical meanings. This paper addresses this issue through consideration of the results of full scale experiments, and through an analytical investigation. It is concluded that the lower, most energetic modes are likely to reflect different fluctuating flow mechanisms, although no mode is likely to be associated with just one flow mechanism or vice versa. The higher, less energetic modes are likely to represent interactions between different flow mechanisms, and to be significantly affected by the number of measurement points and measurement errors. The paper concludes with a brief description of the application of POD to the problem of building ventilation, and the calculation of cladding pressures.
In this paper the capacity of Covariance Proper Transformation (CPT) analyses to provide information about the wind loading mechanisms of bluff bodies is investigated through the application to square cylinders. CPT is applied to the fluctuating pressure distributions on a single cylinder, as well as on a pair of cylinders in the tandem and side by side arrangements, with different separations. Both smooth and turbulent flow conditions are considered. First, through the analysis of the contributions of each CPT mode to the total fluctuating aerodynamic forces, a correspondence between modes and aerodynamic components is sought, which is then verified through examination of the mode shapes. When a correspondence between modes and aerodynamic components is found, an attempt is made to separate the different frequency contributions to the aerodynamic forces, provided by each mode. From the analyses it emerges that (a) in most cases each mode is associated to one single force component, that (b) retaining a limited number of modes allows reproducing the aerodynamic forces with a rather good accuracy, and that (c) each mode is mainly associated with one frequency of excitation.
This study was undertaken to judge the quality of air-tightened exhibition cases. Exhibition cases for artifacts display provide a layer of protection between the interior conditions in the exhibition case and the exterior fluctuating conditions of temperature and relative humidity in the museum environment. An infiltration model of the exhibition case was developed through the experimental measurements to calculate the number of air change rate in the exhibition case undergoing in a day, which represents the airtightness of the exhibition case. The results indicate that tighter exhibition cases provide greater protection against the fluctuating conditions of temperature and humidity outside. When the temperature and humi- dity difference between the exhibition case in-and-out is larger, some absorption materials should be applied to control the environmental conditions in the exhibition case.
This study investigated physiology and psychological response of subjects, when heat pump was operated long time within comfort temperature range. Eight subjects were participated for the experiment. Their age was from 22 to 25 years old. The results of this experiment will propose basic data for improving comfort control algorithm in fluctuating environment by using heat pump. When indoor temperature was controlled by heat pump, the conclusion was as follows. 1) When votes of subjects was considered, the thermal comfort neutrality or lower range helped formation of comfort sensation for subjects. 2) When room temperature was lower, thermal comforts of shoulder, knee and foot with subjects thermal comfort showed high correlation. And when room temperature was higher, thermal comfort of face region with subjects thermal comfort showed high correlation. 3) The necessity of temperature change after 50 minutes from initially operating heat pump demands the additional analysis against the physiological signal.
For a cylinder in a uniform flow stream, sound is generated by the fluctuating pressure on the cylinder surface due to the vortex shedding behind the cylinder. It is known that the major parameters to predict the sound pressure are the characteristic length of the flow along the cylinder axis and the fluctuating lift coefficient. These parameters strongly depend on the Reynolds number and the yaw angle of the cylinder to the free stream. In this experimental study the effects of yaw on the flow parameters, and consequently on the generated sound are investigated. The surface pressure and the radiated sound are measured simultaneously for different yaw angles and showed that the reduced normal velocity component to the cylinder axis reduces the unsteady lift fluctuation which results in lowered sound press-are level, However, experimental result shows that "the cosine law" which uses the normal velocity component as a characteristic velocity for noise Generation from a yawed cylinder needs to be carefully reviewed. reviewed.
Methods for stochastic simulation of non-Gaussian wind pressure have increasingly addressed the efficiency and accuracy contents to offer an accurate description of the extreme value estimation of the long-span and high-rise structures. This paper presents a linear prediction and z-transform (LPZ) based Cumulative distribution function (CDF) mapping algorithm for the simulation of multivariate non-Gaussian fluctuating wind pressure. The new algorithm generates realizations of non-Gaussian with prescribed marginal probability distribution function (PDF) and prescribed spectral density function (PSD). The inverse linear prediction and z-transform function (ILPZ) is deduced. LPZ is improved and applied to non-Gaussian wind pressure simulation for the first time. The new algorithm is demonstrated to be efficient, flexible, and more accurate in comparison with the FFT-based method and Hermite polynomial model method in two examples for transverse softening and longitudinal hardening non-Gaussian wind pressures.
Dynamic characteristics of tall building structures with double negative stiffness damped outriggers (2NSDO) are parametrically studied using the theoretical formula. Compared with one negative stiffness damped outrigger (1NSDO), 2NSDO can achieve a similar maximal modal damping ratio with a smaller negative stiffness ratio. Besides, the 2NSDO can improve the maximum achievable damping ratio to about 30% with less consumption of an outrigger damping coefficient compared with the double conventional damped outriggers (2CDO). Besides, the responses of structures with 2NSDO under fluctuating wind load are investigated by time-history analysis. Numerical results show that the 2NSDO is effective in reducing structural acceleration under fluctuating wind load, being more efficient than 1NSDO.
The heat transfer characteristics from a solid sphere in a fluctuating air flow is simulated numerically in the range of the Reynolds numbers, $1\;{\leqslant}\;Re\;{\leqslant}\;40.$ Such a situation may be encountered in forced convection from a heated spherical particle in a sound field or oscillat-ing flow. The amplitude and phase delay in the heat transfer response to the flow oscillation are computed for a small amplitude flow. The instantaneous response of heat transfer is simulated for the large amplitude oscillation and compared with the quasi-steady response. The effect of the oscillation on the time - mean value in the local and overall heat transfer rate is discussed along with the change in the flow .field.
