Pre-Monsoon Dynamics of Zooplankton Community in the Downstream of the Gagok Stream, Eastward into the East Sea, Korea

  • Pre-monsoon dynamics of zooplankton community were investigated in the downstream of the Gagok stream flowing into the East Sea of Korea. Monthly sampling was carried out to collect zooplankters at five sites in the stream during the period between April and July 2014. Dissolved oxygen contents exceeded $7.0mg\;L^{-1}$ all the time. Water temperature was in a range of 15.7 to $24.9^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.4 to 8.8, respectively. A total of 75 taxa consisted of 36 species of rotifers, 16 species of cladocerans, 16 species of copepods, four kinds of aquatic insects, two kinds of decapods and one nematod was occurred. One species of marine copepod and one cladoceran, and one species of brackish rotifer and one copepod distributed at the station located in the stream mouth. Zooplankton abundance showed to vary from 42 to 4202 individuals $m^{-3}$ due to the explosion of aquatic insects and Alona sp. at site 2 located in the downstream in April. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon period seems to decrease the zooplankton abundance caused by diffusion and drifting to the sea. Species diversity indices were generally high between 1.2~2.3 and were recorded to be high at the downstream throughout the study period. With the zooplankton dynamics, the influence of the input of sea waters into the stream seemed to be confined to some hundred meters of the stream mouth facing the East Sea.

  • Stream Pilot Project, which began in May 2003 and finished in December 2003, was selected to develop effective methods applicable to nature-like streams. Stream restoration projects aim to maintain or increase ecosystem goods and services while protecting downstream and coastal ecosystems. Fields environmental monitoring such as flow discharge and precipitation were conducted along the Idong stream for amount of channel zone change in 2007. This study selected three monitoring positions to measure the water level and discharge of flowing water. A stage-discharge relation is obtained from direct discharge measurements for three stations by fitting an empirical relationship to the data set. Since discharge measures are made only for low flow conditions, a curve of discharge against stage can then be built by fitting these data with a power curve. And this study used data obtained from floodmark checkup as well as HEC-RAS model to analyze the hydrodynamic characteristics of monitoring sites. Reach-averaged hydraulic parameters for the supply reach were calculated from the small area's HEC-RAS model for Idong stream, and a HEC-RAS model used to analyze hydraulics for a period in 2007, after the stream was considered bank stabilization.

Stable Carbon Isotope Signature of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) in Two Streams with Contrasting Watershed Environments: A Potential Indicator for Assessing Stream Ecosystem Health

  • We conducted a study to investigate the characteristics of the carbon cycle of two streams (located in Shig a Prefecture, Japan), having similar size, namely, the Adokawa stream (length: 52 km, area: 305 km2, watershed population: 8,000) and the Yasukawa stream (length: 62 km, area: 380 km2, watershed population: 120,000), but with different degree of human activity. Samples were collected from these two streams at 14 (Adokawa stream) and 23 (Yasukawa stream) stations in the flowing direction. The dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration and the stable carbon isotope ratio of DIC (δ13C-DIC) were measured in addition to the watershed features and the chemical variables of the stream water. The δ13C-DIC (-9.50 ± 2.54‰), DIC concentration (249 ± 76 µM), and electric conductivity (52 ± 13 µS/cm) in Adokawa stream showed small variations from upstream to downstream. However, the δ13C-DIC (-8.68 ± 2.3‰) upstream of Yasukawa stream was similar to that of Adokawa stream and decreased downstream (-12.13 ± 0.43‰). DIC concentration (upstream: 272 ± 89 µM, downstream: 690 ± 37 µM) and electric conductivity (upstream: 69 ± 17 µS/cm, downstream: 193 ± 37 µS/cm) were higher downstream than upstream of Yasukawa stream. The DIC concentration of Yasukawa stream was significantly correlated with watershed environmental variables, such as, watershed population density (r = 0.8581, p<0.0001, n = 23), and forest area percentage of the watershed (r = -0.9188, p<0.0001, n = 23). δ13C-DIC showed significant negative correlation with the DIC concentration (r = -0.7734, p<0.0001, n = 23), electric conductivity (r = -0.5396, p = 0.0079, n = 23), and watershed population density (r = -0.6836, p = 0.0003, n = 23). Our approach using a stable carbon isotope ratio suggests that DIC concentration and δ13C-DIC could be used as indicators for monitoring the health of stream ecosystems with different watershed characteristics.

수치모형을 통한 함평만과 해제반도 주변해역의 조류 및 조석잔차류 분포 (Tidal and tide-induced residual currents around Hampyung Bay and Hajae Peninsula by numerical simulation)

  • In order to understand the currents around Hampyung Bay and Haeje Peninsula, 2D numerical simulations for tidal currents and tide-induced residual currents were carried out. Dominant semidiurnal tidal currents have reversing form and flow NNE-SSW from northern Haeje Peninsula to Songi Island, E-S at northern Haeje Peninsula and NNW-SSE in Hampyung Bay. In flood, a part of currents from Imja Island~Nakwhol Island flow along the main stream flowing northeast at offshore region and the rest flow into Hampyung Bay flowing east along the northern coast of Haeje Peninsula. In ebb, currents from Hampyung Bay flow west along the northern coast of Haeje Peninsula and run together with the main stream flowing southeast at offshore region. The currents create an anticyclonic circulation in flood and a cyclonic circulation in ebb around Haeje Peninsula including Hampyung Bay. Tidal currents are accumulated on Doripo which located at the entrance of Hampyung Bay and show high current velocities. Tidal currents and tide induced residual currents are weak at the inside of Hampyung Bay which has narrow entrance, shallow water depth and wide intertidal zone. An anticyclonic eddy is formed around Gaksi Island as a result of tide induced residual currents. In northern coast of Haeje Peninsula, slow constant currents flow east. It is expected that a gradual change of sediment and an increase of flushing time for suspended materials are carried by tidal currents occurring in Hampyung Bay.

3중화염의 구조에 미치는 연료종류에 관한 수치해석 (Numerical Analysis on the Triple Flame Structure with Different Kinds of Fuel)

  • This study investigates the effects of different kind fuels on the flame structure by using the numerical simulation in triple flame made by a co-flowing fuels-air stream based on the elementary chemical reaction mechanism. Methane and Hydrogen were used as fuel for this study. In order to interpret the result of the study on numerical simulation Skeletal chemistry is employe as the elementary chemical reaction mechanism for methane Gutheil's as an offset ele-mentary chemical reaction mechanism for hydrogen. The result of this study is as follows. In com-parison between the apparent burning velocity change of triple flame and the one-dimensional pre-mixed flame hydrogen fuel flame is higher than methane fuel flame. The flame thrusts out for-ward in the down stream of the boundary between air-fuel mixture and air stream and a part of the flow is bent and forks out in this protruding flame so that a triple flame is originated.

한강수계 내 Melamine 농도검출과 GAC처리에서의 파과모델링 (Melamine Concentration in Han River Basin and the in GAC Column Breakthrough Curve Model)

  • 현재, melamine은 레진, 내화제, 접착제, 라미네이트 등 우리 생활에 다양하게 사용되고 있다. 그로 인해 melamine이 포함된 폐수의 수계 유입 또한 증가하고 있다. EU안전지침서의 GHS에는 melamine을 암 유발 가능성이 있는 물질로 구분하고 있다. 하지만 아직까지 melamine에 대한 독성연구는 진행 중이며 어떤 영향을 주는지 아직까지 밝혀진 사실이 적다. 본 연구에서는 한강과 주변하천의 melamine 오염 정도를 HPLC/UV를 이용하여 오염 정도를 파악하였다. 그리고 활성탄을 이용한 흡착실험 및 모델링에 관한 연구를 하였다. 우선 한강수계 중 상대적으로 상류에 있는 팔당댐 근교와 그보다 하류지역인 뚝섬유원지에서 동일한 시료를 3개씩 채수하였고 한강에 유입되는 하천 중 홍릉천, 왕숙천, 청계천에서 동일하게 시료를 채수하여 정제 후 melamine 농도를 측정하였다. 그 결과 팔당댐 근교의 시료에서는 melamine이 검출되지 않았으며 그보다 상대적으로 하류인 뚝섬유원지에서는 $0.312{\mu}g/L$농도가 검출되었다. 왕숙천에는 $0.578{\mu}g/L$로 가장 높았으며 청계천과 홍릉천은 각 $0.197{\mu}g/L$, $0.325{\mu}g/L$로 검출되었다. 전체적으로 낮은 농도지만 대부분의 지점에서 melamine의 검출을 확인할 수 있었다. 1970년대에는 melamine 생산량이 200,000 ton에서 최근에는 1,400,000 ton으로 계속적인 사용의 증가로 수계오염은 심화될 것으로 보인다. 활성탄을 이용한 흡착 실험에서는 활성탄 크기에 따라 melamine흡착에 약간의 차이를 보였으나 파과모델과 어느 정도 일치함을 보였다.

생태하천 복원 방안 (Suggestions for Ecological Stream Restoration)

  • Urban streams have been severely degraded with wastewater and concrete structure over a prolonged period. The Chonggyecheon Restoration Project recovered a stream in the downtown Seoul with landscaping, plantings and bridges after the cover concrete and elevated asphalt road were removed. The project has been criticized partly because it is not an ecological restoration but rather the development of an urban park with an unnaturally straight flowing stream, artificial building structures, and artificial water pumping from the Han River. Nevertheless, the public have praised the project and almost 100,000 visitors per day come to see the reeds, catfish, and ducks. The stream restoration project is attractive to central and regional government decision makers because it increases the public concern of landscape amenity. Several projects such as Sanjichon and Kaeumjungchon are on going and proposed. These projects have a common and different respect in scope and procedure. The Chonggyecheon project in the process of environmental impact assessment (EIA) and prior environmental review system (PERS) reviewed the environmental impacts before development. Kaeumjungchon in the PERS and Sanjichon without EIA and PERS are reviewed. EIA and PERS systems contribute to checking the ecological sustainability of the restoration projects. A stream restoration project is a very complex task, so an integrated approach from plan to project is needed for ecologically sound restoration. Ecological stream restoration requires 1) an assessment of the entire stream ecosystem 2) establishing an ecologically sound management system of the stream reflecting not only benefits for people but also flora and fauna; 3) developing the site-specific design criteria and construction techniques including habitat restoration, flood plains conservation, and fluvial management; 4) considering the stream watershed in land use plan, EIA, PERS, and strategic environmental assessment (SEA). Additionally the process needs to develop the methodologies to enhance stakeholder's participation during planning, construction, and monitoring.

범람원에 형성된 호소성 습지에 관한 연구 - 낙동강 중류를 사례로 - (Lake-like Swamps Formed in Floodplain on Middle Reach of Nakdong-gang River)

  • 본 연구는 낙동강과 그 지류인 금호강에 형성된 호소성 습지의 형성과정을 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 세 시기의 지형도를 비교 분석하고 단면도를 작성하였으며, 퇴적물의 입경분포를 분석하였다. 그 결과 호소성 습지의 형성 과정을 3가지로 유형화하였다. 첫째, 샛강습지와 금강늪은 망류하천을 이루고 있는 구간에서 분류하여 흐르는 유로의 자유로운 이동 과정에서 남아 형성된 잔적호 습지이다. 둘째, 씩실늪과 낫늪은 배후산지에서 흘러나온 지류가 자연제방의 방해로 유로가 차단되어 자연제방과 평행하게 흘러 본류로 유입되는 yazoo형 습지이다. 셋째, 세천늪과 호촌늪, 진촌늪은 본류 하천의 범람으로 자연제방과 배후습지가 형성된 이후에 다음 홍수시 범람하는 본류 하천이 습지로 유입되어 형성된 범람 유입수형 습지이다.

대전지역 도심하천의 수리화학적 및 동위원소적 특성 (Hydrochemical and Isotopic Characteristics of Major Streams in the Daejeon Area)

  • 이 연구에서는 대전지역 주요 도심하천인 갑천, 유등천, 대전천을 대상으로 하천수의 수리화학적 특성과 산소, 수소, 황, 탄소 동위원소 특성을 분석하였다. 하천수 시료는 풍수기와 갈수기 2차례 채취되었다. 하천의 수리화학적 특성은 상류에서는 Ca(Mg)-$HCO_3$ 유형을 보이다가 도심권을 통과하면서 Ca(Mg)-$SO_4(Cl)$유형으로 전이되고 하류에서는 Na(Ca)-$HCO_3$(Cl, $SO_4$) 유형으로 변하였다. 이와 같은 화학적 유형의 변화는 자연적 영향뿐만 아니라 하수처리장의 방류수와 인위적 오염물질의 유입에 의한 영향이 관여된 것으로 해석된다. 전반적으로 풍수기에 비해 갈수기에 하천수의 전기전도도 값이 높은 특성을 보여준다. 갑천하류는 하수종말처리장의 방류수가 합류되면서 수질이 급격하게 변화한다. 하천수의 pH는 상류에서 중성을 보이다가 도심권을 지나면서 최고 pH 9.8의 고알카리성을 보인다. 이는 현장조사결과 아파트의 우수관을 통한 세제 유입에 기인하는 것으로 보인다. 하천수의 산소-수소 동위원소 관계식은 ${\delta}D=6.45{\delta}^{18}O-7.4$으로 Craig의 순환수선보다 다소 하향 이동되어 도시된다. 이는 기단의 변화와 하천수의 표면 증발 효과에 의한 것으로 보인다. 뿐만 아니라, 상-하류사이에 고도효과를 반영하는 동위원소 조성 값의 차이를 보여준다. 하천수의 ${\delta}^{13}C$ 값은 $-19.5{\sim}-7.8%o$ 범위로 대기중 이산화탄소와 유기물 기원의 범위에 해당된다. 전반적으로 하천수의 상류에서 하류로 향할수록 ${\delta}^{13}C$값이 높아지므로 $CO_2$의 기원이 상류에서는 주로 유기물기원에서 도심권에서는 오염된 대기와 지하수의 기저유출로 인한 무기기원의 비율이 높아지기 때문으로 해석된다. ${\delta}^{34}S-SO_4$함량 관계도에서 하천수를 4개 그룹(갑천중 상류, 유등천, 대전천, 갑천하류)으로 구분하였다. 황산염의 농도는 갑천중상류<유등천<대전천<갑천하류의 순서로 높아지는 반면 ${\delta}^{34}S$값은 감소하는 경향을 보인다. 이는 하천별 황산염의 증가에 따른 공급원이 다르다는 것을 의미한다. 하천수내 황의 기원은 대기기원을 중심으로 황산염의 농도가 높아질수록 황철석의 영향이 큰 것으로 해석된다. 그러나 하천수에 유입되는 생활하수 등에 대한 황동위원소 자료가 없으므로 이에 대한 영향에 대해서는 향후 연구되어야할 과제이다.

모악 금·은광산에 방치된 폐석이 주변 수계 및 생태계에 미치는 환경적 영향 (Environmental Effects on the Hydrologic and Ecologic System around the Wasted Ore Dump of the Moak Gold-Silver Mine)

  • The heavy metal contents and their dispersion patterns in stream water, stream sediments, land plants and aquatic larvae collected from the hydrologic system flowing via the wasted ore dump of the Moak Au-Ag mine were investigated systematically in order to evaluate the environmental impacts of the abandoned metal mine. The heavy metal content increases abruptly in the vicinity of the wasted ore dump, then attenuated with increasing distance from the mine area. Attenuating rates were stream water > stream sediments > land plants > aquatic larvae. On the other hand, the cumulative content of heavy metals was stream sediments >aquatic larvae > land plants > stream water. Each element tends to be enriched selectively according to media; Zn > Cu > Cd > Pb in stream water, Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd in stream sediments and land plants, and Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd in aquatic larvae. These results show that the degree of enrichment and dispersion of pollutant extruded from the wasted ore dump are different according to elements and media, and that the circulation system of materials of each medium is different. The heavy metals, especially Cu, Pb and Zn, of polluted downstream sediments occur in high proportions of Fe-Mn oxides and organic bounded forms, which show high potential of a secondary pollution source. The content of heavy metals and their dispersion patterns in stream sediments are different from those of ten years ago; pollution levels of heavy metals were degraded in various ranges. The Zn and Cu-polluted areas were widened whereas Fe and Pb-polluted areas were reduced. In crops collected from the farm lands in downstream area, the pepper was more concentrated in all heavy metal than rice. The pepper showed some contaminated level in Cu(9.7ppm) and Zn(149ppm), and the rice in Zn(90ppm). However, both crops showed no significant level in Cd(<0.2ppm) and Pb(<0.5ppm).
