In order to manage the water quality from the flowing streams in Cheju Island, the characteristics of water quality was investigated from August, 1996 to May, 1997 and the pollutant loadings for future were estimated from the watershed at each stream. Comparing the mean concentrations of each water quality with the criterion of water quality in river, it was under I class except for Changgo Stream, for DO, under I class at the whole station for SS and under II class for BOD. As the pollutant loadings at each stream in 2020 is compared with those in 1996, the estimated results are as follows : 1) for BOD, 59% at Donghong Stream, 24% at Yeonoe Stream, 44% at Ohngpo Stream and 57% at Changgo Stream. 2) for T-N, 91% at Donghong Stream, 76% at Yeonoe Stream, 63% at Ohngpo Stream and 89% at Changgo Stream. 3) for T-P, 69% at Donghong Stream, 42% at Yeonoe Stream, 45% at Ohngpo Stream and 73% at Changgo Stream. The point source loadings discharged through combined sewer could be treated at sewage treatment plant. However, the expected slow decreasing rate of BOD, T-N, and T-P loadings is due to the part of untreated nonpoint source loadings. Nonpoint source loading overflow typically occurs when the flow of stormwater combined with sewage exceeds the capacity of the interceptor sewers. Since most of the sewers used in Cheju Island are the combined sewers, the combined overflow sewage is bypassed into the receiving water area after a rainstorm. Therefore, a means to control nonpoint source loadings should be considered for the river and marine water quality management.

The Singil Stream, flowing into an artificial lake, Lake Shihwa (South Korea), experiences a strong anthropogenic pressure with continuous organic matter (OM) inputs from rural, urban, and industrial areas. In this study, we investigated suspended particulate matter (SPM) and streambed sediments collected along the Singil Stream in 2014 and 2016, by applying a dual element approach (δ13C and δ15N) to identify OM sources. The SPM and streambed sediment samples from the indusrial area showed higher organic carbon and nitrogen concentrations (or contents) than those from the other areas, with distinctively lower δ15N values. Accordingly, our dual element approach indicates that the industrial area was the predominant OM source influencing OM quality and thus water quality of the Singil Stream flowing into Lake Shihwa during the study periods. However, further studies are necessary to better constrain OM sources in the Singil Stream since OM sources from the industrial area appear to be complex.
Groundwater in Jeju Island, flowing through main stream, is spring water from underground. To set a fixed quantity of groundwater flowing from surface in a hydrological view, 4 downstream (Woedo stream, Gangjung stream, Yeonwoe stream and Ongpo stream) were selected to calculate the characteristic of baseflow and the base-flow discharge through the data on tachometry. There were 11 to 14 level peak caused by runoff, mostly occurred during monsoon season. Also, duration of runoff was 15 to 25 hours, well reflecting the characteristic of inclined, short stream length in Jeju Island and pervious hydrogeographical feature. In case of Gangjung stream, Yeonwoe stream and Ongpo stream, variation of stream water level by baseflow rose above during summer, which was closely linked to the distribution of seasonal precipitation. From autumn to spring, water level fell below while that of Woedo stream remained the same all year round. Data on the water level observed in Woedo stream and Gangjung stream in every single minutes was applied to weir formula(equation of Oki and Govinda Rao) to calculate baseflow discharge. Also, using the data on current and water level calculated in Ongpo stream and Yeonwoe stream, water level-water flow rating was applied to assess base flow discharge.

The drainage area of the Miho stream is composed of granitic basins, gneissic and sedimentary mountains. 80 percent of the Miho stream flows through the Jincheon basin and the Cheongju inner-plain within the Daebo granite belt. Because the deep weathering of granitic hills provides a large amount of sands to the streams, there are wide floodplains with thick alluvium developed in the basin and plain. The thickness of the alluvium is 5~10m and the width of the floodplains is 2~2.5km. In the basin outlet area where a stream passes through the mountain canyon, wide floodplains and deep alluvium are developed in other riverside. The Miho stream is a sand-gravel channel flowing through the Cheongju inner-plain with wide floodplains and deep alluvium formed by deep weathering of granite.
The nucleotide sequence variations of mitochondrial DNA were investigated to understand genetic differentiation for five different Pungitius kaibarae populations at five study sites from selected four streams flowing into the East Sea. The complete sequences of mtDNA control regions of them were determined the constant sites 342 bp and variable sites 183 bp including parsimony infromative sites 122 bp. Based on the phylogenetic tree, five populations were monophyletic unit (97% MPand 100% NJ) and separated two groups (Myongpa-Songhuen stream group and others group). The population of Baebong stream (82nd bp, G-A) consistently formed them of the Jasan stream into a monophyletic unit even though it is closer then Myongpa stream (99th bp, T-C) from the Baebong stream. Further studies on the molecular phylogeny for the primary freshwater fish are needed to establish for the fish biodiversity conservation in mountainous and upland streams.
Stream piracy is one of the dynamic geomorphic processes in the mountainous area. If many stream piracies were concentrated in a certain region, the concentrated distribution of those might reflects the geological structure and tectonic movements of that region. In this study, the stream piracies identified in the lower areas between the Chiri and the Deokyoo mountainous areas were analyzed in relation with the tectonic line from Kwangju to Pohang and the so-called Hansan Mountains. The stream piracy at the Subunchi occurred between the lower-altitude, higher-gradient upper reach of the Seomjin-River flowing on the lower-level basin and the higher-altitude, lower-gradient upper reach of the Geum-River flowing on the higher-level basin. The geomorphic evidences concerning the stream piracy and the human responses to the headward erosion might be found in the vicinity of stream piracy site. Together with the Deunbongsaem(the source fountain of Geum-River), the Subunchi at which the geomorphic processes of stream piracy could be identified in a small area will be a good site for the geography education as well as the geo-tourism.
This study was performed to evaluate the temporal and spatial variations of the water quality at stream flowing into the Suncheon bay in Suncheon city from October 2008 to August 2009 and to estimate the pollutant sources from the streams using multivariate analysis. Water qualities from Seo stream, Dong stream, Ok stream were evaluated as I grade(very good) that compared to the Water Quality Standard. But Haeryong stream and inlet site of Suncheon Bay in BOD were evaluated as a little bad and fair. Water quality at the stream flowing into the Suncheon Bay was could be explained up to 92.8% by three factors which were included in loading of nutrients, organic matter and total coliform group by the allochthonous matters(53.7%), Topographic Factors(25.0%), seasonal variation(14.2%). The concentrations of total nitrogen and phosphorus at sewage treatment plant and organic matters at Haeryong stream were higher than that of others, respectively. From principal component analysis and factor analysis, it could be suggested that it is very important to make an effort to reduce the nutrients and organic matters from sewage treatment plant and Haeryong stream to be in good conservation of the Suncheon bay.
According to the character states of nostrils in the Barbatula species comprising 1,366 specimens collected from the major river system in Korea, distribution pattern of the two Korean Barbatula species was reviewed. The taxonomic character related to nostrils in Barbatula was very stable and two character states (widely separated and closely set) were observed in the present materials. B. toni (Dybowski, 1869) with widely separated nostrils distributes in the streams flowing into the East Sea north of Sokcho, Gangwon-do Province; Eogokcheon Stream, a tributary of Namhangang River; and Anseongcheon Stream, Gyeonggi-do Province, whereas B. nuda (Bleeker, 1864) with closely set occurs in most rivers flowing into the Yellow Sea including Nakdonggang River as well as in the Yangyangnamdaecheon Stream, Gangwon-do Province south to Bangyulcheon Stream, Gyeongbukdo Province, flowing into the East Sea as previously reported with some exception. Especially, both Barbatula species were co-occurred in the Yeongokcheon Stream, Gangwon-do Province and Eogokcheon Stream. The present results will provide a useful guide to study the regional fish fauna or fish community analysis as well as to clarify the taxonomical status of the Korean Barbatula species.
This study investigated the changes caused by diverting water applications at the riverhead of the Onchun Stream via the monitoring of several water quality and biological parameters between 10/09 and 10/10. The analysis indicated that the Onchun Stream distinctly decreased in terms of several water quality parameters, such as BOD, COD, TN, TP, and the concentration of heavy metals as compared to similar values in 2005, before the flowing of the Nakdong River. Especially, BOD showed the 2nd grade of water quality, with an average of 2.0 mg/l at all sites. The species number and standing crops of plankton and benthic macroinvertebrates in the Onchun Stream were also increased. Thus, it was concluded that diverting water from the Nakdong River to the Onchun Stream dramatically improved various environmental indices, such as water quality and biological changes.
