A non-intrusive Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence(PLIF) technique was applied to study the turbulent mixing process in a Rushton turbine reactor. Instantaneous and ensemble averaged concentration fields are obtained by measuring the fluorescence intensity of Rhodamine B tracer excited by a thin Nd:Yag laser sheet illuminating the whole center plane of the stirred tank. The gray level images captured by a 14-bit cooled CCD camera can be transformed to the local concentration values using a calibration matrix. The dye injection point was selected at the tank wall with three quarter height (3/4H) from the tank bottom to observe the mixing characteristics in upper bulk flow region. There exist distinct two time scales: the rapid decay of mean concentration in each region after the dye infusion reflects the large scale mixing while the followed slow decay reveals the small scale mixing. The temporal change of concentration probability functions conjectures the two sequential processes in the batch type mixing. An inactive column of water existed above the impeller disk, in which the fluid rotates with the shaft but is isolated from the mean bulk flow.

We have deigned, fabricated and compared four different types of static chaos microfluid mixers, including the mixers using straight channel flow, microblock-induced alternating whirl flow, microchannel-induced lamination flow, and combined alternating whirl-lamination flow. Among them, the alternating whirl-lamination (AWL-type) mixer, composed of 3-D rotationally arranged microblocks and dividing microchannels fabricated by conventional planar lithography process, is effective to reduce the mixing length over wide flow rate ranges. We characterize the performance of the fabricated mixers, through the flow visualization technique using phenolphthalein solution. We verify that the AWL-type microfluid mixer shows the shortest fluid mixing length of 2.8mm∼5.8mm for the flow rate range of Re=0.26∼26 with the pressure drop lower than 5kPa. Compared to the previous mixers, requiring the mixing lengths of 7∼17mm, the AWL-type microfluid mixer results in the 60% reduction of the mixing lengths. Due to the reduced mixing lengths within reasonable pressure drop ranges, the present micromixers have potentials for use in the miniaturized Micro-Total-Analysis-Systems($\mu$TAS).

The spray-induced mixing characteristics and thermal decomposition of aqueous urea solution into ammonia have been studied to design optimum sizes and geometries of the mixing chamber in SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. The cold flow tests about the urea-injection nozzle were performed to clarify the parameters of spray mixing characteristics such as mean diameter and velocity of drops and spray width determined from the interactions between incoming air and injected drops. Discrete particle model in Fluent code was adopted to simulate spray-induced mixing process and the experimental results on the spray characteristics were used as input data of numerical calculations. The simulation results on the spray-induced mixing were verified by comparing the spray width extracted from the digital images with the simulated Particle tracks of injected drops. The single kinetic model was adopted to predict thermal decomposition of urea solution into ammonia and solved simultaneously along with the verified spray model. The hot air generator was designed to match the flow rate and temperature of the exhaust gas of the real engines The measured ammonia productions in the hot air generator were compared with the numerical predictions and the comparison results showed good agreements. Finally, we concluded that the design capabilities for sizing optimum mixing chamber were established.
Visualization of the mixing pattern in a non-element mixer was carried out using laser induced fluorescence(LIF) to evaluate characteristics of mixer consisting of the main flow pipe and branch flow pipes. The branch flows were injected periodically with the period $T_{in}$ normal to the main flow, and rhodamine B was mixed into the most upstream branch flow to visualize mixing pattern in the main flow pipe by LIF. The length of boundary line L of the LIF image was measured. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed to identify the mixing process of the non-element mixer, and the results were compared with experimental results. Each result was almost the same. When the number of branch flows is increased, the mixing pattern became complicated and was supposed to become chaotic. The length of boundary line L increased exponentially with an increase in the number of branch flows.
A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of an inlet flow pulsation on mixing of two solutions with different concentrations in a micro conduit. We treat an unsteady, incompressible and two-dimensional flow through a micro conduit by adopting the momentum equations with the electrostatic force due to streaming current and the concentration equation. The feasibility of the inlet flow pulsation to enhance the mixing process inside the micro conduit is carefully examined by varying the inlet pulsation frequency. When a low-frequency pulsation is induced at the inlet, the interface between two solutions with different concentrations becomes wavy, which results in mixing enhancement. As the pulsation frequency increases, the waviness of the interface becomes meager, and the concentration gradients at the interface approach the value for the non-pulsating steady flow.

It is of great interest to enhance mixing performance in a microchannel in which the flow is usually characterized as a low Reynolds number (Re) so that good mixing is quite difficult to be achieved in this laminar flow regime. In this regard, we present a new chaotic passive micromixer, named Barrier Embedded Micromixer (BEM), of which the mixing mechanism is based on chaotic flows. In BEM, chaotic flow is induced by periodic perturbation of the velocity field due to periodically inserted barriers along the channel wall while a helical type of flow is obtained by slanted grooves on the bottom surface of the channel in the pressure driven flow. To experimentally compare the mixing performance, a T-microchannel and a microchannel with only slanted grooves were also fabricated. All microchannels were made of PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) from SU-8 masters that were fabricated by conventional photolithography. Mixing performance was experimentally characterized with respect to an average mixing intensity by means of color change of phenolphthalein as pH indicator. It was found that mixing efficiency decreases as Re increases for all three micromixers. Experimental results obviously indicate that BEM has better mixing performance than the other two. Chaotic mixing mechanism, suggested in this study, can be easily applied to integrated microfluidic systems , such as Micro-Total-Analysis-System, Lab-on-a-chip and so on.

This paper presents numerical and experimental works for simultaneous pumping and mixing small liquid using asymmetric microelectrode arrays, based on AC electroosmotic flows. To this end, four arrangements of electrode pairs were considered with diagonal/herringbone shapes. Numerical simulations were made of three-dimensional geometries by using the linear theory. The results indicated that the helical flow motions induced by the electrode arrays play a significant role in the mixing enhancement. The pumping performance was influenced by the slip velocity at the center region of the channel compared to that near the side walls. To validate the numerical predictions, the microfluidic devices were made through MEMS. The flow rate was obtained by using micro PIV, increasing the applied frequency. The electrolyte was potassium chloride solution. The flow patterns above electrodes were visualized to see lateral flow for mixing. The experimental results showed good agreements with the numerical predictions.
Electroosmotic flow induced by an applied electrostatic potential field in microchannel is analyzed in this study. The electroosmotic flow is an alternative to pressure driven flow in microchannels, but the usage has been limited to the simple cases. In this study, We analyze electroosmotic flow driven by inhomogeneous surface charge on the channel wall. The surface charge varies along a direction perpendicular to the electric field in order to generate the electroosmotic flow. A numerical results substantiate the highly efficient mixing performance. It is highly the beneficial to fabrication process since only straight microchannel rather than complex geometry is enough to yield efficient mixing.
The hydrogen behavior in a nuclear containment vessel is a significant issue when discussing the potential of hydrogen combustion during a severe accident. After the Fukushima-Daiichi accident in Japan, we have investigated in-depth the hydrogen transport mechanisms by utilizing experimental and numerical approaches. Computational fluid dynamics is a powerful tool for better understanding the transport behavior of gas mixtures, including hydrogen. This paper describes a Large-eddy simulation of gas mixing driven by a high-buoyancy flow. We focused on the interaction behavior of heat and mass transfers driven by the horizontal high-buoyant flow during density stratification. For validation, the experimental data of the Containment InteGral effects Measurement Apparatus (CIGMA) facility were used. With a high-power heater for the gas-injection line in the CIGMA facility, a high-temperature flow of approximately 390 ℃ was injected into the test vessel. By using the CIGMA facility, we can extend the experimental data to the high-temperature region. The phenomenological discussion in this paper helps understand the heat and mass transfer induced by the high-buoyancy flow in the containment vessel during a severe accident.
