  • Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) is performed for developing turbulent flow of the $270^{\circ}$ curved duct at a Reynolds number of 56,690. The curvature ratio on the basis of a centric radius $R_c$ and a duct height H is 3.357. Turbulence models adopted are k-$\omega$ model for Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation Simulation and Shear Stress Transport (SST) model for DES. DES is used as the hybrid computation technique combined with RANS-SST and Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Predicted results are compared with measured results including the distributions of Reynolds stresses and the flow characteristics on the symmetric plane of curved duct are presented. Judging from the comparison between the predicted and the measured results, the DES approach is applicable to calculate the developing turbulent flow in a $270^{\circ}$ curved duct.

  • Vessel traffic safety management means the managerial technical measures for improving the marine traffic safety in general terms. The main flow of vessel traffic safety management is that: 1) Traffic Survey, 2) Replay by Marine Traffic Flow Simulation, 3) Quantitative Assessment, 4) Policy Alternatives, 5) Prediction·Verification. In the management of vessel traffic safety, it is most important to establish assessment models that can numerically estimate the current safety level and quantitatively predict the correlation between the measures to be taken and the improvement of safety and the reduction of ship handling difficulties imposed on mariners. In this paper, the replay model for traffic flow simulation was made using marine traffic survey data, and the present traffic situation became replay in the computer. An attempt was made to rate the current safety of ports and waterways by applying the Environmental Stress model. And, as a countermeasure for traffic management, by taking of, the promotion of total traffic congestion in early morning rush hour, the correlation between traffic control rate and the reduction in ship handling difficulties imposed on mariners was predicted quantitatively.

  • Three-dimensional incompressible flow past an open cavity in a channel is investigated using Detached Eddy Simulation(DES). The length to depth ratio of the cavity is 2 and the Reynolds number defined with the cavity depth is 3,360. The DES methods are based on the Menter's SST model. In the present work, two types of inflow conditions are used: one is RANS profile, the other is LES inflow from another Large Eddy Simulation(LES) of fully developed channel flow. The results are compared with experimental data and LES results in terms of the mean statistics, temporal physics and scalar transport phenomenon of the flow.

  • We start to develop a predictable technology for thermal-hydraulic performance of the RMWR core using an advanced numerical simulation technology. As a part of this technology development, we are developing the advanced interface tracking method to improve the conservation of volume of fluid. The present paper describes a part of the development of the twophase flow simulation code TPFIT with the advanced interface tracking method. The numerical results applied to large-scale water-vapor two-phase flow in tight lattice rod bundles are shown and compared with experimental results. In the results of numerical simulation, a tendency of the predicted void fraction distribution in horizontal plane agreed with the measured values obtained by the advanced neutron radiography technique including the bridge formation of the liquid at the position of adjacent fuel rods where an interval is the narrowest.

  • The objective of this study were to develop a cooling simulation model for fixed-bed of rough rice and to analyze the factors affecting cooling time of rough rice. A computer simulation model based on equilibrium conditions between grain and air was developed to predict temperature and moisture content changes during cooling of rough rice. the result of t-test showed that there were no significant differences between predicted and measured temperature changes on significance model agreed well with measured values. This cooling simulation model was applied to analyze the effect of some factors, such as air flow rate, cooling air temperature and humidity, initial grain temperature and moisture content, and bed depth, on cooling time of rough rice. Cooling rate increased with increase of air flow rate and bed depth whereas it decreased with increase of cooling air temperature and humidity and initial grain temperature. Among these factors, the most important factor was air flow rate. Specific air flow rate of 0.35㎥/min㎥ was required for cooling rough rice in 24 hours.

  • Using finite elements, a simulation is prformed for the pipe systems to investigate free vibrational characteristics, that is natural frequencies, considering the intial tension due to the velocity and the pressure of the inside fluid flow. To confirm the program developed in this study, the results are compared with the results of commercial software ANSYS. When the initial tension is neglected in curved pipes, the natural frequencies are reduced as flow velocity increases, and the rapid decreases of the natural frequencies took place. However, when the initial tension is taken into account, the natural frequencies are not changed with the change of the flow velocity. In free vibrational simulation of pipe systems, it is necessary to calculate the initial state force due to the velocity and the pressure of the fluid flow from the equilibrium first, then the force should be included in the equation of motion of the systems to get more accurate natural frequencies.

  • Analysis of the internal state of the blast furnace is needed to predict and control the operating condition. Especially, it is important to develop modeling of blast furnace for predicting cohesive zone because shape of cohesive zone influences on overall operating condition of blast furnace such as gas flow, temperature distribution and chemical reactions. Because many previous blast furnace models assumed cohesive zone to be fixed, they can't evaluate change of cohesive zone shape by operation condition such as PCR, blast condition and production rate. In this study, an axi-symmetric 2-dimensional steady state model is proposed to simulate blast furnace process using the general purpose-simulation code. And Porous media is assumed for the gas flow and the potential flow for the solid flow. Velocity, pressure and temperature distribution for gas and solid are displayed as the simulation results. The cohesive zones are figured in 3 different operating conditions.

  • The transient incompressible flow behind the axisymmetric bluff body is numerically simulated using the random vortex method(RVM). Based on the vorticity formulation of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations, the Lagrangian approach with a stochastic simulation of diffusion using random walk technique is employed to account for the transport processes of the vortex elements. The numerical solutions for 2-dimensional recirculating flow behind a backward-facing step in the laminar range of Reynolds number are compared with experimental data. The present simulation focuses on the transitional flow regime where the recirculation zone behind the bluff body becomes highly unsteady and large-scale vortex eddies are shed from the bluff body wake due to intrinsic shear layer instabilities. The unsteady vertical flow structures and the mixing characteristics behind the bluff body are discussed in detail.

  • In the present study, a numerical analysis of transient mixer flow is performed considering free surface formation. The flow patterns and free surface shape in a mixers formed by flat paddle and pitched paddle impellers are predicted. In a flat paddle mixer, two flow circulation regions are formed due to strong radial flow, whereas one large circulation is formed in a pitched paddle mixer due to axial downward flow. These differences affect the free surface evolution and shape. It is seen from the results that a flat paddle mixer gives deeper free surface at center region than a pitched paddle mixer. The free surface of 8-blades-flat-paddle mixer is also simulated to compare with the available experimental and simulation results. The present computational results agree reasonably well with the experimental data.
