The free-surface motions interacting with structures are investigated numerically using the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method proposed by Koshizuka et al. (1996) for solving incompressible flow. In the method, Lagrangian moving particles are used instead of Eulerian approach using grid system. Therefore the terms of time derivatives in Navier-Stokes equation can be directly calculated without any numerical diffusion or instabilities due to the fully Lagrangian treatment of fluid particles and topological failure never occur. The MPS method is applied to the numerical study on the fluid impact loads for wet-drop tests in a LNG tank, and the results are compared with experimental ones.

Numerical analysis of static and dynamic wind effects on civil engineering structures was performed. Long-span suspension bridges are flexible structures that are highly sensitive to the action of the wind. Aerodynamic effect often becomes a governing factor in the design process of bridges and aeroelastic stability boundary becomes a prime criterion which should be confirmed during the structural design stage of bridges because the long-span suspension bridges are prone to the aerodynamic instabilities caused by wind. If the wind velocity exceeds the critical velocity that the bridge can withstand, then the bridge fails due to the phenomenon of flutter. Buffeting caused by turbulence results in structural fatigue, which could lead to the failure of a bridge. Navier-Stokes equations are used for the aeroelastic analysis of bridge girder section. The aeroelastic simulation is carried out to study the aeroelastic stability of bridges using both Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) and Computational Structural Dynamic (CSD) schemes.

In order to design a shear coaxial injector of solid particles for underwater propulsion system, basic experiments on gas-liquid shear coaxial injector are necessary. In the gas-liquid coaxial injector self-pulsation usually occurs with an intense scream. When self-pulsation occurs, mass flow rate oscillation and intense scream are detected by the interactions between the liquid and gas phase. Self-pulsation must be suppressed since this oscillation may cause combustion instabilities. Considerable research has been conducted on self-pulsation characteristics, but these researches are conducted in swirl coaxial injector. The main objective of this research is to understand the characteristics of self-pulsation in shear coaxial injector and reveal the mechanism of the phenomenon. Toward this object, self-pulsation frequency and spray patterns are measured by laser diagnostics and indirect photography. The self-pulsation characteristics of shear coaxial injector are studied with various injection conditions, such as the pressure drop of liquid and gas phase, and recess ratio. It was found that the frequency of the self-pulsation is proportional to the liquid and gas Reynolds number, and proportional to the L/d.

The hot deformation characteristics of pure molybdenum was investigated in the temperature range of $600{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range of $0.01{\sim}10.0/s$ using a Gleeble test machine. The power dissipation map for hot working was developed on the basis of the Dynamic Materials Model. According to the map, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurs in the temperature range of $1000{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ and the strain rate range of $0.01{\sim}10.0/s$, which are the optimum conditions for hot working of this material. The average grain size after DRX is $5{\mu}m$. The material undergoes flow instabilities at temperatures of $900{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ and the strain rates of $0.01{\sim}10.0/s$, as calculated by the continuum instability criterion.

A horizontal Rijke tube with an electric heating part is a convenient system for studying the thermo acoustic instability. In this work, horizontal Rijke tube is manufactured to investigate and compare damping characteristics of Helmholtz resonator under unsteady heat release and room temperature conditions. We obtained basic data using the Helmholtz resonator which is used as passive damper under the thermo acoustic instabilities.

The motions of a spinning rotor and a fluid enclosed in its cavity are known to have mutual interactions, which change the frequencies of forced vibrations and cause instabilities. These phenomena are of technical importance for fluid-cooled turbines as well as spin-stabilized satellites or rockets containing liquid fuels. In this paper the characteristics of unstable whirling of a rotor containing a partitioned cavity filled with two kinds of liquids are investigated experimentally. It studies the influence of rotational speed and filling ratio of two kinds of liquids on unstable whiring. As a result, it is found that the whirl velocity is approximately equal to, or slightly lower for large masses of trapped fluid than rotor critical speed. In case of a spinning rotor partially filled with two kinds of liquids the boundary surface plays a similar role to the free surface, and cases unstable forward whirl.

Numerical characteristics of air chemistry associated with hypersonic flows are described and are compared with those of hydrogen oxygen combustion, applying the partially implicit time integration method to air chemistry. This paper reveals that the time integration of air chemistry needs a chemical Jacobian for stable calculations. However the positive real eigenvalues in air chemistry are relatively smaller than those of hydrogen combustion, and the numerical integration is less sensitive than that with combustion. lt is also found that the application of the partia1ly irnplicit method reduces the computing time without numerical instabilities.
We develop in this work a new well-balanced preserving-positivity path-conservative central-upwind scheme for Saint-Venant-Exner (SVE) model. The SVE system (SVEs) under some considerations, is a nonconservative hyperbolic system of nonlinear partial differential equations. This model is widely used in coastal engineering to simulate the interaction of fluid flow with sediment beds. It is well known that SVEs requires a robust treatment of nonconservative terms. Some efficient numerical schemes have been proposed to overcome the difficulties related to these terms. However, the main drawbacks of these schemes are what follows: (i) Lack of robustness, (ii) Generation of non-physical diffusions, (iii) Presence of instabilities within numerical solutions. This collection of drawbacks weakens the efficiency of most numerical methods proposed in the literature. To overcome these drawbacks a reformulation of the central-upwind scheme for SVEs (CU-SVEs for short) in a path-conservative version is presented in this work. We first develop a finite-volume method of the first order and then extend it to the second order via the averaging essentially non oscillatory (AENO) framework. Our numerical approach is shown to be well-balanced positivity-preserving and shock-capturing. The resulting scheme could be seen as a predictor-corrector method. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed scheme are assessed through a carefully selected suite of tests.

The present work addresses structural characteristics of natural gas flames in a lean premixed swirl-stabilized combustor with an attention focused on the effect of the formation of recirculation zones on the combustion instability. It is known that the recirculation zone plays an important role in stabilizing a turbulent, premixed natural gas flames by providing a source of heat or radicals to the incoming premixed fuel and air. To improve our understanding of the role of recirculation zones, the flame structure was investigated for various mixture velocities, equivalence ratios and swirl numbers. The optically accessible combustor allowed for the application of laser diagnostics, and Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) measurements was used to characterize the flame structure under both cold flow conditions and hot flow conditions. Dynamic pressures were also measured to investigate characteristics of combustion at the same time. The results indicates that the formation of recirculation zone is strongly related to the occurrence of thermo-acoustic instabilities.

3-Roll coating process as a key application technology for manufacturing automotive pre-painted metal-sheets has been studied. The 3-Roll coating system for this study consists of pick-up roll for picking up and distributing coating liquid from the reservoir, metering roll to properly meter coating liquid in metering gap regime, and applicator roll for directly transferring liquid into metal-sheet surface. Flow dynamics and operable coating windows of a polymeric paint (primer) with shear-thinning rheological property have been correlated with processing parameters such as speed ratio and metering gap between pick-up and metering rolls. In the uniform coating regime, dry coating thickness increased with increasing metering gap or decreasing speed ratio. Ribbing and cascade instabilities were observed in low speed and high speed ratio conditions, respectively. It is revealed that lower speed ratio makes severity and wavelength of the ribbing increase, aggravating flow instability in coating systems.
