This study was conducted to estimate the design flood by the determination of best fitting order of LH-moments of the annual maximum series at six and nine watersheds in Korea and Australia, respectively. Adequacy for flood flow data was confirmed by the tests of independence, homogeneity, and outliers. Gumbel (GUM), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Pareto (GPA), and Generalized Logistic (GLO) distributions were applied to get the best fitting frequency distribution for flood flow data. Theoretical bases of L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moments were derived to estimate the parameters of 4 distributions. L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moment ratio diagrams (LH-moments ratio diagram) were developed in this study.
A technique for the simulation of atmospheric boundary layers in wind tunnels is developed and tested experimentally. The device consists of a grid made of seven horizontal and vertical evenly distributed bars in which air injection holes are drilled in order to influence the flow in the wind tunnel. The air flow in each bar can be controlled independently. Firstly, the device is used together with a rough carpet, which covers the test section floor, in order to simulate the boundary-layer characteristics over an open rural area. Hot-wire measurements, performed at different positions in the test-section, show the capability of the grid in generating the required boundary layer. An acceptable agreement with statistical values of mean velocity and turbulence profiles has been achieved, together with a good span-wise homogeneity. The results are also compared with those of a passive simulation technique based on the use of spires.
Satellite's infrared detector shall be calibrated under thermal vacuum environment using a reference black body before a launch. The full aperture black body (FABB) as an infrared calibration reference shall be composed of vacuum compatible materials and temperature controlled from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $+40^{\circ}C$ with emissivity higher than 0.95. The temperature homogeneity over the central 80 % area of the FABB front surface shall be better than 2 K. The FABB designed by thermal and flow analysis was $1m{\times}1m{\times}8mm$ copper plate on which black painted aluminum honeycomb core was attached. Copper tubes were welded on the opposite side of the honeycomb core to allow temperature regulated gaseous nitrogen to flow through them. By the FABB validation test, the temperature homogeneity was observed around 1 K using 20 PT100 sensors and modified COTS infrared camera. The emissivity value was 0.975 at $40^{\circ}C$ under atmospheric pressure.

Freeway FFS (Free-Flow Speed) under the state of LOS (Level of Service) A has been regarded as a homogeneous state to all levels of traffic volume. The features of low-density FFS is served as the basic data for a decision on limited maximal speed, accident analysis, simulation modeling etc. A few researches for the macroscopic characteristics of design and operation speed have been reported, and any study for the microscopic features of freeway free-flow speed under the state of low density has not been done. Therefore, the characteristics of low-density FFS according to the level of traffic volume (1-3 veh/30 sec) and daily hour periods (0-5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-19, 20-23) is microscopically analyzed in this study with huge volume and speed data. It was found that speed distributions are changed and show different behaviors under the conditions of traffic volume levels and daily time periods. V85s (85th percentile speed) at early morning and night periods decrease when levels of traffic volume increase, whereas V85s at day time do not show considerable differences. Especially, FFSs of levels of traffic volume at early morning and night periods, despite low density, is analyzed as heterogeneity, but homogeneity at day time.

A numerical study was made of the control of transient oscillatory flow modes in Czochralski convection. The reduction of temperature oscillation was achieved by changing the rotation rate of crystal rod, .OMEGA.$_{S}$=.OMEG $A_{S0}$(1+ $A_{S}$sin(2.pi. $f_{S}$/ $t_{p}$t)). The temporal behavior of oscillation flow was scrutinized over broad ranges of two parameters, i.e., the rotation amplitude( $A_{S}$.leq.0.5) and the nondimensional frequency (0.9.leq. $f_{S}$.leq.1.5). The mixed convection parameter was ranged 0.225.leq.Ra/PrR $e^{2}$.leq.0.929, which encompassed the buoyancy-and forced-dominant convection regimes. Computational results revealed that the temperature oscillations could be reduced effectively by a proper adjustment of the control parameters. The uniformity of temperature distribution near the crystal rod was examined. The control of oscillatory flow modes was also made for a realistic, low value of Pr.

Numerical simulations are carried out for the liquid encapsulant Czochralski(LEC) by imposing a magnetic field. The use of a magnetic field to the crystal growth is to suppress melt convection and to improve the homogeneity of the crystal. In the present numerical investigation, we focus on the range of 0-0.3Tesla strength for the axial and cusped magnetic field and the effect of the magnetic field on the melt-crystal interface, flow field and temperature distribution which are the major factors to determine the quality of the single crystal are of particular interest. For both axial and cusped magnetic field, increase of the magnetic field strength causes a more convex interface to the crystal. In general, the flow is weakened by the application of magnetic field so that the shape of the melt-crystal interface and the transport phenomena are affected by the change of the flow and temperature field.

Diesel vehicle is growing in importance in light-duty sector as a way of reducing greenhouse gases due to improved fuel economy. Carbon monoxide, gas-phase hydrocarbon and organic fraction of diesel particulates can be oxidized to harmless products using a diesel warm-up catalyst (WCC). This study investigated the effect of a turbocharger and a baffle on flow fields and temperature distributions in the WCC for Diesel vehicles by a numerical analysis. In the case of the WCC with the turbocharger, velocity vectors and temperatures of inlet of the WCC have the relatively homogeneous distributions by the swirl generated from the turbocharger. Velocity vectors and temperatures of inlet of the WCC with the turbocharger and the baffle have the improved distributions in homogeneity compared with the case of the WCC without the baffle. The homogeneous flow field and the temperature distribution in the WCC may contribute to improve the conversion performance of the catalysts.

The concept of dense granular-flow target (DGT) for the China Initiative Accelerator Driven Subcritical system (CiADS) is an attractive choice for high heat removal ability, low chemical toxicity, and radiotoxicity. A wobbling hollow beam is proposed to enhance the homogeneity of temperature rise of flowing particles in beam-target coupling zone. In this paper, the design procedure of target and beam parameters was discussed firstly. Then we simulated the heat deposition and transfer of the scanning beam in DGT to study the effect of beam parameters. The results show the flux density of proton beam plays a crucial role in the distribution of temperature rise while the contributions from scanning frequency heat transfer are also obvious. Moreover, heat transfer in transversal directions is insignificant, resulting in a low heat flux towards the sidewalls of DGT. This work not only contributes to the design of DGT, but also beneficial for understanding the beam-target coupling in porous materials.
An understanding of temporal trends of stream flows can help in the river management and the water resources planning for natural circumstances and human communities. Changes in temperature, precipitation, flow, and land use (agriculture, flood prevention activities, reservoir operation, interbasin diversion, etc.) are all eventually reflected in the flow pattern of the river. An assumption that the stationarity of the hydrologic series implying time-invariant characteristics of the time series accepted in water structure designs can no longer be valid if the flow changes as a result of the climate change or the stream flow use. Therefore, the identification and description of the characteristics of changes in hydrologic time series is a very important task in the river basin management. In this study, the statistical tests on the flow change forced by excess water diversions in the Sumjin River basin were performed by ways of single variable and time series variable comparisons. The tests showed that currently the Sumjin River basin statistically keeps its homogeneity in annual streamflow series, but the changed situation has been appeared in dry season streamflow series.
Numerical analysis using three dimensional finite volume method for the discretization, adaptive grid method for the numerical accuracy, multiple rotating frame method for the rotating body and the standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model for the turbulent flow was performed to understand the heat transfer phenomena and to improve the efficiency of the scroll compressor. The temperature measurement was carried out under ARI condition. It was found that the fluid temperature in the compressor was predicted accurately while the temperature of the motor coil showed large discrepancy between the calculation and experiment due to the large anisotropy of the conductivity and non homogeneity. We found that the efficiency of the compressor depends on the inlet temperature of the compressing part and the flow pattern around the inlet region of the compressing part influences the inlet temperature due to high surface temperature of the main frame. The efficiency of the compressor using Coanda effect is higher than the previous one because the smooth suction at the inlet region of the compressing part leads to low heat transfer to the refrigerant of the compressor.
