Numerical computations are carried out to analyze the characteristics of flow fields around Air Supported Ships. The computations are performed in a rectangular grid system based on MAC(Marker And Cell) method. The governing equations are represented in finite difference forms by forward differencing in time and centered differencing in space except for its convection terms. For the certification of this numerical analysis method, the computations of flow fields around a Catamaran, an ACV(Air Cushion Vehicle) modeled with pressure distribution on free surface and two SES(Surface Effect Ship)'s are carried out, The results of the present computations are compared with the previously presented computational and experimental results in the same condition.
Three dimensional turbulent flow fields around ships are simulated by a numerical method. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used where Reynolds stresses are approximated by Baldwin-Lomax and Sub-Grid Scale(SGS) turbulence models. Body-fitted coordinate system is introduced to conform three dimensional ship geometries. The governing equations are discretized by a finite volume method. Temporal derivatives are approximated by the forward differencing and the convection terms are approximated by the QUICK or Kawamura scheme. The 2nd-order centered differencing is used for other spatial derivatives. Pressure and velocity fields are simultaneously iterated by the Highly Simplified Marker-And-Cell method. To verify the numerical method and turbulence models, flow fields around ships are simulated and compared to the experiments.
The dynamics of a tornado-like vortex with touching down is investigated by using the LES turbulence model. The detailed information of the turbulent flow fields is provided and the force balances in radial and vertical directions are evaluated by using the time-averaged axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations. The turbulence has slightly influence on the mean flow fields in the radial direction whereas it shows strong impacts in the vertical direction. In addition, the instantaneous flow fields are investigated to clarify and understand the dynamics of the vortex. An organized swirl motion is observed, which is the main source of the turbulence for the radial and tangential components, but not for the vertical component. Power spectrum analysis is conducted to quantify the organized swirl motion of the tornado-like vortex. The gust speeds are also examined and it is found to be very large near the center of vortex.

An unstructured overset mesh method has been developed for the simulation of unsteady flow fields around isolated rotors and rotor-fuselage configurations. The flow solver was parallelized for the efficient calculation of complicated flows requiring a large number of cells. A quasi-unsteady mesh adaptation technique was adopted to enhance the spatial accuracy of the solution and to better resolve the rotor wake. The method has been applied to calculate the flow fields around rotor-alone and rotor-fuselage configurations in forward flight. Validations were made by comparing the predicted results with those of measurements. It was demonstrated that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of unsteady time-accurate flow fields involving multiple bodies in relative motion.
The present study numerically investigates two-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer ir the confined jet flow in the presence of applied magnetic field. For the purpose of controlling vortex shedding and heat transfer, numerical simulations to calculate the fluid flow and heat transfer in the confined jet are performed for different Reynolds numbers in the absence and presence of magnetic fields and for different Prandtl numbers of 0.02 (liquid metal), 0.7 (air) and 7 (water) in the range of $0{\le}N{\le}0.05$, where N is the Stuart number (interaction parameter) which is the ratio of electromagnetic force to inertia force. The present study reports the detailed information of flow and thermal quantities in the channel at different Stuart numbers. As the intensity of applied magnetic fields increases, the vortex shedding formed in the channel becomes weaker and the oscillating amplitude of impinging jet decreases. The flow and thermal fields become the steady state if the Stuart number is greater than the critical value. Thus the Nusselt number at the stagnation point representing the heat transfer characteristics also vary as a function of Stuart number.
The present study compares flow fields reconstructed by data assimilation method with different combinations of parameters. As a data assimilation method, Vortex-in-Cell-sharp (VIC#), which supplements additional constraints and multigrid approximation to Vortex-in-Cell-plus (VIC+), is used to reconstruct flow fields from scattered particle tracks. Two parameters, standard deviation of Gaussian radial basis function (RBF) and grid spacing, are mainly tested using artificial data sets which contain few particle tracks. Consequent flow fields are analyzed in terms of flow structure sizes. It is demonstrated that sizes of the flow structures are proportional to an actual scale of the standard deviation of RBF. It implies that a combination of larger grid spacing and smaller standard deviation which preserves the actual standard deviation is able to save computational resources in case of a low track density. In addition, a simple comparison using an experimental data filled with dense particle tracks is conducted.
The flow fields in Gas Bubble Driven Circulation Systems were numerically analyzed. In various gas flow rate and bubble size, the flow characteristics were predicted. Eulerian-Eulerian approach was used for the formulation of both the continuous and dispersed phases. The modification of the general purpose computer program PHOENICS code was employed to predict the mean flow fields, turbulent characteristics, gas dispersion, volume fraction. The predicted shows very satisfactory agreement with experimental results for all regions of ladle. The results are of interest in the design and operation of wide variety of material processing.
This study investigates flow fields and energy dissipation due to regular wave interaction with a perforated vertical breakwater, through velocity data measurement in a two-dimensional wave tank. As the waves propagate through the perforated breakwater, the incoming wave energy is reflected back to the ocean, dissipated due to very turbulent flows near the perforations and inside the chamber, and transmitted through the perforations of the breakwater. This transmitted energy is further reduced due to the presence of the perforated back wall. Hence most of the energy is either reflected or dissipated in the vicinity of the structure, and only a small amount of the incoming wave energy is transmitted through the structure. In this study, particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed to measure two-dimensional instantaneous velocity fields in the vicinity of the structure. Measured velocity data was treated statistically, and used to calculate mean flow fields, turbulence intensity and turbulent kinetic energy. For investigation of the flow pattern, time-averaged mean velocity fields were examined, and discussed using the cross-sections through slot and wall for comparison. Flow fields were obtained and compared for various cases with different regular wave conditions. In addition, turbulent kinetic energy was estimated as an approach to understand energy dissipation near the perforated breakwater. The turbulent kinetic energy was distributed against wave height and wave period to see the dependence on wave conditions.
Using a Rheometries Dynamic Analyzer (RDA II), the dynamic viscoelastic properties of a semi-solid ointment base (vaseline) in large amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields were measured over a temperature range of $25{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ and the linear viscoelastic behavior in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields was investigated over a wide range of angular frequencies. In this article, the nonlinear viscoelastic behavior was reported from the experimentally obtained data and the effect of temperature on this behavior was discussed in detail. In addition, the angular frequency and temperature dependencies of a linear viscoelastic behavior were explained. Finally, the applicability of a time-temperature superposition principle originally developed for polymeric materials was examined using a shift factor. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) At very small strain amplitude region, vaseline shows a linear viscoelastic behavior independent of the imposed deformation magnitudes. Above a critical strain amplitude $({\gamma}_{0}=0.1{\sim}0.2%)$, however, vaseline exhibits a nonlinear viscoelastic behavior ; indicating that both the storage modulus and dynamic viscosity are sharply decreased with increasing deformation magnitude. (2) In large amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields, an elastic behavior (storage modulus) has a stronger strain amplitude dependence and begins to show a nonlinear behavior at a smaller strain amplitude region than does a viscous behavior (dynamic viscosity). (3) In small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields, the storage modulus as well as the loss modulus are continuously increased as an increase in angular frequency and an elastic nature is always superior to a viscous behavior over a wide range of angular frequencies. (4) A time-temperature superposition principle can successfully be applicable to vaseline. This finding allows us to estimate the dynamic viscoelastic behavior of vaseline over an extraordinarily extended range (11 decades) of angular frequencies inaccessible from the experimentally measured range (4 decades).
When a secondary gaseous flow is injected vertically into a supersonic flow through circular nozzle, a complicated structure of flow field is produced around the injection area. The interaction between the two streams produces a strong bow shock wane on the upstream side of the side-jet. The results show that bow shock wave and turbulent boundary layer interaction induces the boundary layer separation in front of the side-jet. This study is to analyze the structure of flow fields and distribution of surface pressure on the flat plate according to total pressure ratio using a supersonic cold-flow system and also to study the control force of affected side-jet. The nozzle of main flow was designed to have Mach 2.88 at the exit. The injector has a sonic nozzle with 4mm diameter at the exit of the side-jet. In experiments, The oil flow visualization using a silicone oil and ink was conducted in order to analyze the structure of flow fields around the side-jet. The flow fields are visualized using the schlieren method. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic solution is also compared with experimental results.
