  • Recent studies proved turbulent flow properties in high-rise building models differ from those in low-rise building models by comparing turbulent statistics. Although it is important to understand the flow characteristics within and above high-rise building models in the study of urban environment, it is still unknown and under investigation. For this reason, we performed wind tunnel experiment using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to investigate and identify the turbulent flow properties and characteristic flow patterns in high-rise building models. In particular, we focus on instantaneous flow field near the canopy and extracted flow field when homogeneous flow field were observed. As a result, six characteristic flow patterns were identified and the relationship between these flow patterns and turbulent organized structure were shown.

  • In this study the numerical analyses on cavity flow in supersonic flow field are conducted. According to the length-to-depth ratio of cavity, the shear layer is changed, consequently influencing on vortex structure inside the cavity. Especially in case the fluid flow outside cavity impinges inside the cavity, the oscillation of the cavity flow is identified. Another result is that though the cavity flow shows the unsteadiness, characteristics of cavity flow can be represented by pressure coefficients converged.

  • The effects of duct inlet conditions on fan characteristics and upper wind velocity fields were investigated for two kinds of impellers. As the duct inlet condition, the relative positions between duct inlet and fan impeller and the size of baffle plate mounted on a duct inlet were selected. The 3-dimensional velocity components in flow fields were measured by a 5-holes pitot tube. From the results of measurements, it was found that the size of baffle plate scarecely effect on upper wind flow fields and characteristics of fan. It was also confirmed that the upper wind velocity distributions can be estimated by the potential flow field with large baffle plate at duct inlet.

  • This study investigated torque characteristics for Couette flow experimentally under circumstaces that ferrofluids were between two coaxial spheres. Torque measurement was obtained for the situation where the inner sphere was rotating while the outer sphere was kept stationary. The magnetic field was imposed on the fluid, using a bar magnet which was inserted in the inner sphere. In the laminar flow region the torque increase when the magnetic field is applied and the critical Reynolds number is increased. However, in the transition regime, the effect of the magnetic field on the torque characteristics decrease as Reynolds number increases. The value of torque were the same as those of glycerine solution beyond the cirtical Reynolds number. We also made experimental equation which could obtain coefficient of torque within critical Reynolds number in terms of sphere spacing Reynolds number and magnetic properties of ferrofluid.

  • In-cylinder flows in a motored 3.5L four-valve SI engine were investigated quantitatively using three-component LDV system, to determine how engine configuration affects the flow field. The purpose of this work was to develop quantitative methods which correlate in-cylinder flows to engine performance. For this study, two distinct intake/piston arrangements were used to examine the flow characteristics. Quantification of the flow field was done by calculating two major parameters which are believed to characterize adequately in-cylinder motion. These quantities were turbulent kinetic energy(TKE) and tumble ratio in each plane at each crank angle. The results showed that in-cylinder flow pattern is dominated by the intake effects and two counter rotating vortices, developed during the intake stroke, produced relatively low tumble ratio. Therefore, the applicability of these quantities should be carefully considered when evaluating characteristics resulting from the complex in-cylinder flow motions.

  • Numerical simulations were carried out to analyze the flow characteristics of the wind tunnel. Flow field characteristics with velocity uniformity at the test sections are largely affected by inlet conditions of air flow rate and temperature. Axial average velocity of the flow field inside the test area was almost linearly decreased by 0.026% each 1m. The uniformity distributions of axial velocity showed the highest reduction rate of about 24% between nozzle outlets 1 ~ 2m. In addition, average velocity and the uniformity are increased with air temperature in the wind tunnel due to density variation. The results of this paper are expected to be useful for the basic design of wind tunnel and to be used for efficient design.

  • Flow control of flow field is essential to design efficient elements relating to fluid machineries. In this study, flow characteristics of rectangular prism with center gap through-flow at different aspect ratio was investigated to flow control. It was used a FLUENT 6.3 version to study flow field. It was found that the through-flow disturbs the development of vertical velocity component and decreased the vortex size and critical value of a rapid change in pressure coefficient distribution.

  • An experimental Investigation was performed to study the characteristics of Electro-Rheological fluid flow in a horizontal rectangular tube with or without D.C electric field control. First, the microscopic behavior of the ER suspension structure between rectangular tube brass electrodes for the stationary ER nut(i and flow of the ER fluid was investigated by flow visualization. The flow of the ER fluid between fluid rectangular tube was solved experimental using the constitutive equation for a Bingham fluid. ER fluid is made silicon oil mixed with $0.2wt\%$ starch having hydrous particles. Velocity distributions of the ER fluids were obtained by particle image velocimetry measuring those of the clusters using an image processing technique.

  • Butterfly valves are widely used as control valves for industrial process. For the definition of optimum configuration of the valve, wide range of related studies has been actively conducted in the case of working fluids of water or air under the normal temperature. Recently, internal flow and performance characteristics of cryogenic butterfly valve for LNG carrier take a growing interest in the field of research and development. Therefore, present study is aimed to investigate the internal flow and performance characteristics of the cryogenic butterfly valve because the study result for the valve can be hardly found at present. Part 1 of this paper describes the study result of a butterfly valve model under the condition of the normal temperature. Succeeding Part 2 of this paper will describe the internal flow characteristics of a cryogenic butterfly valve for LNG carrier. The results of Part 1 show that pressure loss coefficients and flow rate coefficients obtained by the present experiment and CFD analysis agree well each other. Moreover, internal flow visualization for the valve by CFD analysis and PIV measurement have revealed complicated flow patterns of the internal flow field in detail.

  • In a clothes dryer, various thermo-fluid flow phenomena occur such as the heat and mass transfer in the process of removing moisture from clothes, the flow field generated by the fan, and the various flow characteristics from the complex flow paths. The study and understanding of such phenomena is an important factor in increasing the performance of dryers. In this study, as part of a dryer research, the flow field inside a vented dryer was measured using PIV, which the result will be used as the basic material in analyzing the various flow phenomena.
