Performance and flow characteristics of a small forward swept propeller fan for home refrigerators are studied experimentally. An unusual discontinuity is observed in the performance curve of the fan. Mean flow fields measured with as-hole Pitot probe reveal that the flow is axial at the high flow rate and radial at the low flow rate. The flow structure changes abruptly across the discontinuity. Unsteady flow measurements with a set of hot-wire probes indicate that near the discontinuity a single-cell stall rotates at 40% speed of the fan speed, while away from the discontinuity the flow shows periodic variation corresponding to the blade passage frequency. Phase-lock averaged flow fields measured with a triple-sensor hot-wire probe show that there appears radially inward flow over the pressure side of the blade and the outward passage flow over the tip.
This paper presents two flexible alternatives to the decoupled load flow(DCL) method. The proposed load flow methods can improve the convergence profiles of the DCL by reflecting in part the effects of the off-diagonal terms in the Jacobian at minimal costs. They can improve the convergence characteristics especially when the power system operating states deviate from the conditions required for stable convergence of the DCL and the P-Q coupling becomes significant. Two algorithms are obtained from the expression of the full Newton-Raphson load flow (NRL) method by successively diminishing the effects of the off-diagonal submatrices in the Jacobian. In the process of simplification, the Neuman series expansion is utilized. Test results show promising performances of the proposed algorithms in their convergence characteristics both in number of iterations and overall convergence speeds. Proposed algorithms are expected to provide flexible alternatives to the NRL when the DCL experiences convergence problems.
In this paper, the numerical simulation of the gas-liquid flow in a cylinder cyclone separator is performed to investigate the flow characteristics using a commercial software, FLUENT, which solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RaNS) equations. First, a single-phase flow with water in a gas-liquid cylinder cyclone(GLCC) separator is simulated and compared with the experiments(Farchi, 1990) and numerical simulations(Erdal, 1997). Then, the characteristics of the multi-phase flow for water-air, mud-only, and mud-air cases are discussed in the view point of the feasibilities for a mud handling system.
The characteristics of flow and heat transfer in a bubbling fluidized bed are investigated by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To simulate two-phase flow for the gas and solid flows, Eulerian-Eulerian approach is applied. Attention is paid for a heat transfer from the wall to fluidized bed by bubbling motion of the flow. From the result, it is confirmed that heat transfer is promoted by chaotic bubbling motion of the flow by enhancement of mixing among solid particles. In particular, the vortical flow motion around gas bubble plays an important role for the mixing and consequent heat transfer. Discussion is made for the time and space averaged Nusselt number which shows peculiar characteristics corresponding to different flow regimes.
The numerical analysis and the experiments are carried out to develop the design program for the flow control valve attached to the vane pump for power steering. The factors affecting the flow rate characteristics are analyzed by the experiments and the numerical analysis. The results are summarized as follows; (1) the main factors affecting to the first and second control flow rate are the diameter of big and small rod of the spool. (2) the cut off is mainly affected by the main spring constant, the initial displacement of main spring and the small diameter of the spool. (3) the dropping slope characteristics are decided by the chamfer of spool and the dynamic characteristics of the spool.
Many researchers have developed the measurement technique of in-cylinder flow characteristics and found the effect of intake port geometries on engine performance. The flow characteristics of four-valve cylinder head were examined in a steady flow rig for different intake ports. Tumble intensity of intake configurations with different entry angles were quantified with a tumble meter. The velocity and angular momentum distributions in the tumble adaptor were measured under steady conditions with PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). We have obtained the results that flow structure becomes complicated by valve interference at low valve lift. As the valve interferences were reducing and the flow pattern changed to large vortex structure with tumble direction, intake ports with different entry angles have different tumble centers. Tumble eccentricity of intake port with low entry angle was large, so that the port had relatively much angular momentum compared to others which was expected to improve combustion performance.
Turbocharging is one of the best methods to improve the performance of diesel engines, because of its merits,-power ratio, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Most of them in small and medium diesel engines have adopted the pulse turbocharging method with twin entry vaneless radial turbines to maximize the energy utility of exhaust gas. This method requires the high performance of turbine under unsteady flow, and also the matching between turbine and diesel engine is most important. However, it is difficult to match properly between them. Because the steady flow data are usually used for it. Accordingly, it is necessary to catch the characteristics of turbine performance correctly over the wide range of the operation conditions under unsteady flow. In this paper, the characteristics of turbine performance under unsteady flow are represented at varying conditions, such as inlet pressure amplitude, turbine speed and frequence.
A numerical simulation was performed to investigate the internal flow characteristics in gas turbine nozzle by the variation of flow area of the nozzle. In general the area of turbine nozzle is chosen by the most substantial factor on performance improvement of turbine at the first stage. In the performances test through CFD analysis for three types of nozzle with conventional, enlarged and reduced area, reduced one with effective flow area (EFA) was the most efficient. That is the minimum effective value within EFA limit defined by the manual of technical order had a good performance. It is useful to avoid the low power problem in the test of performance after maintenance and overhaul of turbine engine.
In comparison with previous researches for swirling flow, the spiral flow self-generated in the spiral flow nozzle has some different characteristics. It is not needed a compulsive tangential momentum to get its velocity component and has long potential core, relatively low swirl ratio, and high focusing ability. In this study, the self-generated mechanism of the spiral flow was clarified and the effect on the width of annular slit on spiral flow characteristics was investigated experimentally and numerically. As a result, the existence of tangential velocity component regardless of a compulsive angular momentum is clarified and the results obtained by experiment have a satisfactory agreement with those by numerical method, quantitatively and qualitatively.

The flow characteristics of impinging jet flow are affected greatly by nozzle plate to distances. An sharp edge nozzle was used to achieve uniform mean velocity at the nozzle inlet, and its diameter is 10mm(d). Therefore, the flow characteristics on the impinging jet plate can be changed largely by the control of main flow. In the parent study, we investigate the effects of main flow length , its variable is nozle plate to distances( 12d, 10d, 8d, 6d and 4d).
