An Investigation on Dynamic Behaviors of Single Vortex with CO2 Dilution in a CH4-Air Jet Diffusion Flame (CH4공기 제트 확산화염에서 CO2 첨가에 따른 단일 와동의 동적거동에 관한 연구)

  • The dynamic behaviors of the single vortex interacting with $CH_4-Air$ jet diffusion flame are investigated numerically. The numerical method is based on a predict-corrector scheme for a low Mach number flow. A two-step global reaction mechanism is adopted as a combustion model. Studies are conducted in fixed initial velocities for the three cases according as where $CO_2$ is added; (1) without dilution, (2) dilution in fuel stream and (3) dilution in oxidizer stream. A single vortex is generated by an axisymmetric jet, which is made by an impulse of a cold fuel when a flame is developed entirely in a computational domain. The simulation shows that $CO_2$ dilution in fuel stream results in somewhat larger vortex radius, and greater amount of entrainment of surrounding fluid than in other cases. Thus, the dilution of $CO_2$ in fuel stream enhances the mixing in single vortex and increases the stretching of the flame surface. The budgets of the vorticity transport equation are examined to reveal the mechanism of vortex formation when $CO_2$ is added. It is found that, in the case of $CO_2$ dilution in fuel stream, the vortex destruction due to volumetric expansion and the vortex production due to baroclinic torque are more dominant than in other cases.

  • The chemical response of energetic materials is analyzed in terms of 1) the thermal decomposition under the thermal stimulus and 2) the reactive flow upon the mechanical impact, both of which give rise to an exothermic thermal runaway or an explosion. The present study aims at building a set of chemical kinetics that can precisely model both thermal and impact initiation of a heavily aluminized cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine (RDX) which contains 35% of aluminum. For a thermal decomposition model, the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement is used together with the Friedman isoconversional method for defining the frequency factor and activation energy in the form of Arrhenius rate law that are extracted from the evolution of product mass fraction. As for modelling the impact response, a series of unconfined rate stick data are used to construct the size effect curve which represents the relationship between detonation velocity and inverse radius of the sample. For validation of the modeled results, a cook-off test and a pressure chamber test are used to compare the predicted chemical response of the aluminized RDX that is either thermally or mechanically loaded.

  • The conventional model did not take momentum conservation into consideration when the electron absorbs and emits the photons. II-ray provides momentum conservations on any directions of the entering photons, and also the electrons have radial momentum conservations and fully elastic bouncing between two atoms, in the new atom model. Conventional atom model must be criticized on the following four points. (1) Natural motions between positive and negative entities are not circular motions but linear going and returning ones, for examples sexual motion, tidal motion, day and night etc. Because the radius of hydrogen atom's electron orbit is the order of 10$^{-11}$ m and the radia of the nucleons in the nucleus are the order of 10$^{-l4}$m and then the converging n-gamma rays to the nucleus have so great circular momentum, the electron can not have a circular motion. We can say without doubt that any elementary mass particle can have only linear motion because of the n-rays' hindrances, near the nucleus. (2) Potential energy generation was neglected when electron changes its orbit from outer one to inner one. The h v is the kinetic energy of the photo-electron. The total energy difference between orbits comprises kinetic and potential energies. (3) The structure of the space must be taken into consideration because the properties of the electron do not change during the transition from outer orbit to inner one even though it produces photon. (4) Total energy conservation law applies to the energy flow between mind and matter because we daily experiences a interconnection between mind and body. An understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the control of normal proliferation and differentiation of the various cell types which make up the human body will undoubtedly allow a greater insight into the abnormal growth of cells, A large body of biochemical evidence was eventually used to generate a receptor model with an external ligand binding domain linked through a single trans-membrane domain to the cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase and autophosphory-lation domains. The ligand induced conformational change in the external domain generates either a push-pull or rotational signal which is transduced from the outside to the inside of cell.l.ell.

  • This paper is concerned with joining of thin metal sheets by single stroke clinching process. This method has been used in sheet metal work as it is a simple process and offers the possibility of joining similar-dissimilar thin sheet metals. Clinching generates a joint by overlapping metal sheets deforming plastically by punching and squeezing sequence. AA 5754 aluminum alloy of 0.5 mm thick sheets have been selected as a modal material and the process has been simulated under different process conditions and the results have been analyzed in terms of the quality of clinch joints which are influenced mainly by tool geometries. The rigid-plastic finite element method is applied to analyses in this paper. Analysis is focused mainly on investigation of deformation and material flow patterns influenced by major geometrical parameters such as die diameter, die depth, groove width, and groove corner radius, respectively. To evaluate the quality of clinch joints, four controlling or evaluation parameters have been chosen and they are bottom, neck thickness of bottom and top sheets, and undercut thickness, respectively. It has been concluded from the simulation results that the die geometries such as die depth and diameters are the most decisive process parameters influencing on the quality of clinch joints, and the bottom thickness is the most important evaluation parameter to determine if the quality of clinch joints satisfies the demand for industrial application.

Modeling Artificial Groundwater Recharge in the Hancheon Drainage Area, Jeju island, Korea (제주도 한천유역 지하수 모델개발을 통한 인공함양 평가)

  • For the Hancheon drainage area in Jeju island, a groundwater flow model using Visual MODFLOW was developed to simulate artificial recharge through injection wells installed in the Hancheon reservoir. The model was used to analyze changes of the groundwater level and the water budget due to the artificial recharge. The model assumed that $2{\times}10^6m^3$ of storm water would recharge annually through the injection wells during the rainy season. The transient simulation results showed that the water level rose by 39.6 m at the nearest monitoring well and by 0.26 m at the well located 7 km downstream from the injection wells demonstrating a large extent of the affected area by the artificial recharge. It also shown that, at the time when the recharge ended in the 5th year, the water level increased by 81 m at the artificial reservoir and the radius of influence was about 2.1 km downstream toward the coast. The residence time of recharged groundwater was estimated to be no less than 5 years. The model also illustrated that 15 years of artificial recharge could increase the average linear velocity of groundwater up to 1540 m/yr, which showed 100 m/yr higher than before. Increase of groundwater storage due to artificial recharge was calculated to be $2.4{\times}10^6$ and $4.3{\times}10^6m^3$ at the end of the 5th and 10th years of artificial recharge, respectively. The rate of storage increase was gradually diminished afterwards, and storage increase of $5.0{\times}10^6m^3$ was retained after 15 years of artificial recharge. Conclusively, the artificial recharge system could augment $5.0{\times}10^6m^3$ of additional groundwater resources in the Hancheon area.

  • This paper describes a research work of developing a computer-aided design of irregularly shaped-sheet metal product with bending and piercing operation for progressive working. An approach to the CAD system is based on the knowledge-based rules. Knowledge for the CAD system is formulated from plasticity theories, experimental results and the empirical knowledge of field experts. The system has been written in AutoLISP on the AutoCAD with a personal computer and is composed of five main modules, which are input and shape treatment, flat pattern-layout, production feasibility check, blank-layout, and strip-layout module. Based on knowledge-based rules, the system is designed by considering several factors, such as radius and angle of bend, material and thickness of product, complexities of blank geometry and punch profile, and availability of press. This system is capable of unfolding a formed sheet metal part to give flat pattern and automatically account for the adjustment of bend allowances to match tooling requirements by checking dimensions and the best utilization ratio of blank-layout within bending production feasibility area which is beyond ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ degrees intersecting angle between grain flow and bending edge line and which is suitable to progressive bending operation. Also the strip-layout drawing generated by a bending and a piercing operation according to punch profiles divided into automatically for external area of irregularly shaped-sheet metal product is displayed in graphic forms.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of magnetorheological (MR) fluid based mount (MR mount in short) which can be applicable to vibration control of diesel engine of ship. In this work, a mixed - mode including squeeze mode, flow mode and shear mode is proposed and designed. In order to determine actuating damping force of MR mount required for efficient vibration control, excitation force from diesel engine is analyzed. In this analysis, a model of V-type engine is considered and the relationship between velocity and pressure of gas in torque of the piston is derived. Subsequently, by integrating the field-dependent rheological properties of commercially available MR fluid with the excitation force an appropriate size of MR mount is designed. In addition, in order to achieve maximum actuating force with geometric constraints design optimization is undertaken using ANSYS software. Through the magnetic density analysis, optimal design parameters such as bottom gap and radius of coil are determined.

  • An abrasive, calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate (DCPD), was synthesized in a Box-wilson experimental design by reactions between phosphoric acid and milk of lime, and calcium chloride and sodium phosphate solutions, and stabilized with TSPP and TMP. The optimum conditions for preparation of DCPD from phosphoric acid with milk of lime were such as; reaction temp.; $51.9^{\circ}C$, conc. of lime; 25.9%, conc. of phosphoric acd; 77.9%, drying temp.; $60.2^{\circ}C$ and final pH; 6.46. The physico-chemical and pharmaceutical properties of DCPD were showed as follows: glycerin absorption value(68 ml/100g), whiteness(99.5%), particle size(10.9 nm), pH(7.8), and set test(pass). XRD and SEM of DCPD indicated a monoclinic system crystallographically. $N_2$ adsorption isotherm curve by BET showed non porous type II form. The micromeritic parameters of DCPD showed that surface area was $3.27{\sim}4.6\;cm^{2}/g$ and pore volume, pore area and pore radius were negligible. The rheogram of the toothpaste containing DCPD showed pseudoplastic flow with yield value of 321, and thixotropic behavior forming hysteresis loop. These results meet the requirements as abrasive standard, and sythesized DCPD is expected as a good dental abrasive such as a high quality grade in practice.

  • The natural convection model of the consolidated system has been developed to make sure the removal of decay heat generated in the spent fuel for the loss of forced cooling accident. The numerical technique employed was based on the ADI scheme. The calculation of heat generation rate in the spent fuel was peformed by the ANS-79 decay heat model, and the nonuniform surface heat flux is assumed with a chopped sine curve for the conservative decay heat generation input. The sensitivity study was performed to examine the possibility of the pool bulk boiling by varying the various parameters, i.e. inter-fuel spacing ratio, heat generation power, and radius of the fuel rod. The application results of this model show that the natural circulation flow through compacted spent fuel bundles enables the pool temperature to control in a safe and effective manner, after the required cooling time. The corresponding acceptance criteria of the cooling time for rearranging the spent fuel rods were also found.

  • Ceramic Injection Molding (CIM) is one of wide used processes in industry field and the applications are gradually being expanded to parts of medical and electric devices. In this study, the CIM process were analyzed with FEM and process parameters were studied and analyzed the effect on product quality. The shape of simple flat plate was compared to the shapes with the hole, with the round corner portion or with the side wall portion. If there are holes then the hole around the uneven density distribution and the defects such as weld lines could be occurred. The Large radius of the corners of the product give good formability and fluidity. Not only the shape parameters of product but also the process parameters during CIM are studied. The simulation results showed that the process parameters of temperature, initial fractions and velocity are important design parameters to improve the quality of products.
