  • Thermal energy storage (TES) systems using Microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) have been recognized as one of the most advanced energy technologies in enhancing the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. We examined a way to incorporate MPCMs with building materials through application for wood-based flooring. Wood-based flooring is commonly used for floor finish materials of residential buildings in Korea. However, wood-based flooring has not performed the characteristic of heat storage. This study is aimed at manufacturing high thermal efficiency wood flooring by increasing its heat storage using MPCM. As a result, this study confirmed that MPCM is dispersed well in adhesive through the scanning electron microscopy analysis. From the differential scanning calorimetry analysis, it can be confirmed that this composite has the characteristic of a thermal energy storage material. Also, we analyzed how this composition was formed by physical combination through the Fourier transform infrared analysis. Also, we confirmed the bonding strength of the material by using the universal testing machine.

  • The viscoelastic properties of blends of melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) for engineered flooring used on the Korean traditional ONDOL house floor heating system were investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). Because MF resin is a thermosetting adhesive, the effect of MF rein was shown across all thermal behaviors. The addition of PVAc reduced the curing temperature. The DMTA thermogram of MF resin showed that the storage modulus (E') increased as the temperature was further increased as a result of the cross-linking induced by the curing reaction of the resin. The storage modulus (E') of MF resin increased both as a function of increasing temperature and with increasing heating rate. From isothermal DMTA results, peak $T_{tan{\delta}}$ values, maximum value of loss modulus (E") and the rigidities (${\Delta}E$) of MF/PVAc blends at room temperature as a function of open time, peak $T_{tan{\delta}}$ and maximum loss modulus (E") values were found to increase with blend MF content. Moreover, the rigidities of the 70:30 and 50:50 MF/PVAc blends were higher than those of the other blends, especially of 100% PVAc or MF. We concluded that blends the MF/PVAc blend ratios correlate during the adhesion process.

  • The structural and environmental characteristics of typical pig houses in different growth phases were surveyed and analyzed. Based on the data for thirty nine selected farms in four provinces, Jeonbuk-do, Jeonnam-do, Gyeongbuk-do, and Gyeongnam-do, in the southern provinces, Korea, the goal is to eventually establish standard pig houses of sow and litter, nursery pigs, and growing-finishing pigs. The survey included farm scale, production specialization, structural dimensions of the houses and their ventilation systems, cooling and heating systems, and floor and pit systems related to manure collection. The survey showed 90∼98% of growing-finishing pig houses adopted the sidewall curtain systems. The sidewall curtain systems, although popular, is not well insulated which leads to excessive heating costs in winter. Regarding flooring and manure collection system of the house, 23∼35% of growing-finishing houses installed scraper systems with concrete-slat floors in Gyeongsang provinces while 52∼78% did in Jeolla provinces. The cause of a large variance in flooring between tow regions could not be academically pinpointed, rather it could be attributed to the advice of neighbors who leads local pig production circle. A general trend toward enlargement and enclosure of pig houses for all growth phases was gaining popularity in most regions in recent years. A steady shift to multisite operation from continuous operation was also observed to prevent a disease transfer. The structural design of a standard pig house with its environmental control systems including ventilation and heating/cooling system was suggested for further validation study. In-depth analysis of the survey data is presented in the Results and Discussion section.

  • This study investigated the present traditional Korean farmhouse based on a survey of 30 households from Oiam-Ri folk Village in Chung-Nam Province. This study was primarily concerned with the present housing; the size and plan of the house, lighting and heating, the finishing materials of anbang(the master's bedroom or ondol) and the kinds of fumiture. I was also interested in identifying the socio-demographic and physical variables that influenced the housing, both the ordinary farm households and the descendent of nobility households. Bibliographical studies, cultural approaches, field surveys with tape recordings, and questionnaires were used to collect the data. The results showed that the types of house plans were mixed from the southern region(one-line type) and middle region(courtyard type). The heating system and the fuel for the ondol anbang has changed entirely from wood burning system to oil boiler system. The finishing material of the anbang floor changed from traditional oil paper and straw mats to vinyl flooring. Traditional fumiture and small decor items are disappearing and are being replaced by modem items, but the descendents of the nobility household kept many traditional type of fumiture and small decor items.

The sidewall curtain system, although popular, is not well insulated which leads to excessive heating costs in winter. Regarding flooring and manure collection system of the house, there was quite a lot variability among provinces, with 30∼80% of the houses installing scraper systems with concrete-slat floors in comparison with 30∼60% using a slurry system. Gangwon-do and Choongbook Chungwoo-goon are the predominant regions that installed a scraper system. A general trend toward enlargement and enclosure of pig houses for all growth phases was gaining popularity in most regions in recent years. A steady shift to three site production from a lumped system was also observed to prevent a disease transfer. The structural design of a standard pig house with its environmental control systems including ventilation and heating/cooling system was suggested for further validation study. • The purpose of this study was to find out the physical change of the farm house and its anbang(the main room : master bed room), to identify the behavioral changes : activity and awareness of anbang, and to clarify the relationship between the physical changes of the farm house, and the behavioral changes of housing life-style in the anbang space. Bibliographical studies, cultural approaches and field survey method with questionnaire were used to collect data from 55 residents of Anwhari and Yangkyori in Pyong Teck Koon. Tables and drawings were made to analyze the data. The major findings were 1) the heating system of the ondol anbang. The most popular type is the double heating system(new pipes added to the traditional ondol). This combination ondol system brought some conviniences to the farmers. This change in structure of the ondol were of four types : Complete change in style, enlarged-completely changed style, partially changed style, enlarged-partially changed style. 2) from 1960 through 1970 lighting of the anbang changed room oil lamp to electricity. 3) the finishing material of the anbang floor changed from traditional oil paper and straw mats to vinyl flooring. 4) Traditional furniture and small decor items are gradually disappearing and are being replaced by modern items. 5) The awareness and actual use of the ondol anbang has not much changed from the multi-functional and sacred space of daily living : which are the characteristics of Korean traditional ondol anbang. The biggest consistency in the ondol anbang is the heating system of the floor, which is the characteristic of ondol culture in Korea. This system will continue regardless of time and place in Korea.

  • In case of wood flooring, the high emissivity would be one of the most important properties especially as the cover material of underfloor heating system. The FIR (Far Infrared) materials such as wood emit FIR energy by heating, which has been used as the medical therapy such as dry sauna. This research investigated the emissivity and the emission power of wood composites by comparing the amount of the three heat transfer modes transferred by infrared radiation which came from the increased temperature of the bottom board of the plywood box by the heater. The results showed the value of radiation mode was the highest mode for the plywood box, and the convection mode was the main mode for the aluminum box. The rate of convection was 81.8% in the aluminum box and 48.2% in the plywood box, respectively. In case of the rate of radiation, the aluminum box showed only 15.4% and the plywood box showed 51%. The emissivity and the emission power of birch plywood showed the same values as those of wood. The amount of energy required for the temperature rising of water within vial in the aluminum box and in the plywood box were 3.32 kJ and 6.70 kJ respectively, which showed that the vial temperature of the plywood box was two times higher than that of the aluminum box.
