Around the Nakdong River which is one part of the repairing business of 4 Grand Rivers currently being constructed, sandy ground is distributed throughout the wide area. Many civil engineering structures such as small and medium sized dams, flood control basins, and redevelopment of reservoirs and retention reservoirs are scheduled to be constructed, so the prevention measures for liquefaction are surely needed. To identify such liquefaction, a lot of factor affecting the strength of liquefaction were studied through laboratory investigation. Most of the conducted study was about clean sands, but in the case of the real ground the sand can exist not in the clean conditions but in the conditions mostly including sand of fine grained soil. The sand of fine grained soil has become a significant factor to assess liquefaction because many cases of liquefaction happened in the silty and clayer soil. In this study, un-drained tests of plasticity index of fine grained particles were conducted with the sands from Nakdong River. In result, the study shows that dynamic shear strength characteristics differ according to the plasticity index.

Recently, river maintenance is change due to concern for the environment increases. Thus, the river restoration and river environment is best part of river maintenance. In case of Korea, existing river is improvement straightly for flood control and transportation. When the stream channel is straightly, maintain stability is important. Thus, construction of levees along the river. The various river structures for the purpose of flood control and transportation are inhibit factors of longitudinal and lateral connectivity. Connectivity is defined as the maintenance of lateral, longitudinal, and vertical pathways for biological, hydrological, and physical processes. Long-term point of view, increased connectivity is very important for a healthy ecosystem composition. As the first step of river restoration, this study described theory and concept of river continuum and the numerical model was applied to a real topography to simulate the flow analysis with or without segregated and blocked space in the Mankyung river. The results of this study can be utilized to develop the watershed connectivity assessments methods in order to the river restoration.
The flood pulse in streams enhances the biodiversity and ecosystem services of the channel-floodplain ecosystems by exchanging water, nutrients, sediments and organisms. However, the lateral connectivity in most streams of Korea has been disrupted by the levee constructions for the purpose of flood control and land use of floodplains. To compare the characteristics of floodplain vegetation according to existence of lateral connectivity in streams, we investigated the geomorphological and soil environmental factors and structures and distribution of vegetation in the floodplains connected and isolated by levee to the channel in Cheongmi Stream, Seom River, Hwangguji Stream, Mangyeong River, Gomakwon Stream, and Boseong River, Korea. In comparison of soil environments, moisture and clay contents were higher in the isolated floodplain than in the connected floodplain. According to the result of principal component analysis (PCA) using environmental data, the environments of the connected floodplain and the isolated floodplain were separated by soil moisture contents, soil texture and distribution altitude of the vegetation. The results of detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) using vegetation data showed that the isolated floodplain was dominated by the hydropythic communities of diverse life form and that the connected floodplain was dominated by the hygrophytic communities that endure disturbance. In conclusion, it is thought that the vegetation of the floodplain changed to the lentic wetland vegetation dominated by diverse hydrophytes as the floodplain was isolated from the channel by artificial levees.

It is essential to understand the hydraulic characteristics of rivers for increasing flood-control capacity and operating hydraulic structures efficiently. Multi-dimensional models can be the proper measures to obtain the detailed information on the hydraulic characteristics of rivers. But huge amount of data and time-consuming work have been the obstacle for applying multi-dimensional models. In this study, simulation technique with multi-dimensional model(EFDC), coupled with COSFIM and FLDWAV, has been developed and applied to the real river system for verification. Developed technique can offers spatial and grid unit information as well as line and section unit information from 1-D modeling. It is considered that the coupling simulation technique can provide useful hydraulic information for river management and treatment.
Prediction of exact soil loss yield has as important engineering meaning as prediction of exact flow measurement in a stream. The quantity of soil loss in a stream should be considered in planning and management of water resources and water quality such as design and maintenace of hydraulic structures : dams, weirs and seawalls, channel improvement, channel stabilization, flood control, design and operation of reservoirs and design of harbors. In this study, the soil loss of Sap-gyo reservoir watershed is simulated and estimated by RUSLE model which is generally used in the estimation of soil loss. The parameters of RUSLE model are selected and estimated using slope map, landuse map and soil map by GIS. These parameters are applied to RUSLE's estimating program. And soil loss under probability rainfall in different frequencies are estimated by recent 30 years of rainfall data of Sap-gyo reservoir watershed.

It is essential to understand the hydraulic characteristics in accordance with the changes in the river environment and operating hydraulic structures for increasing flood-control capacity. The objective of this study is to analysis the effect of dredging and operation of weirs on hydraulic characteristics in Nakdong River(Seongju~Imhaejin). HEC-RAS model has been used to examine the hydraulic characteristics with considering the flow transition through the unsteady flow analysis and the information about the specifications of multi-functional weirs. The relationship between Manning n and roughness height k, the effect of weir installation and operation on the flow and stage, and the bed change resulted from the river treatment project have been examined by steady and unsteady flow analysis. It is expected that the result from this study can be the basic data for the river treatment and management.

The river disaster caused by installation of hydraulic structures on the river gives varieties to flowing water stream, tractive force and so on. In this study, the changes of tractive force and energy from the side weir installation for the purpose of flood control was analyzed through laboratory experiment. The experiments of the pre and after-installation have been performed under conditions that waterway is trapezoidal shape, waterway slope ranges are from 0.1 to 1.0 percentage, and flow rates are 25 l/sec. As results, the specific energy ratio increases in the higher slope and at a certain point, larger specific energy ratio showed than 1 in the 1.0% slope. The tractive force ratio decreases in higher slope and the sections that tractive force ratio appeared higher than 1 are more widespread in the direction of downstream. And calculated tractive force is about 1.3.

It is essential to obtain accurate and highly reliable streamflow data for water resources planning, evaluation and management as well as design of hydraulic structures. A new discharge computation method proposed in this research uses Chiu's velocity distribution and estimation of maximum velocity. This method shows acceptable channel discharges comparing these by the exiting velocity-area method. When velocity-area method is used, it is required to observe velocities at every specified point and vertical line using a velocity meter like Price-AA. If the method proposed in this research, is used, however it is not necessary to observe all point velocities needed in the velocity-area method. But this method can not be applied for the cases of very complex and strongly asymmetric channel cross-sections because Chiu's velocity distribution using entropy concept may be quite biased from that of natural rivers.

Rivers refer to either natural or artificial structures whose primary functions are flood control and water conservation. Due to recent localized torrential downpours led by climate change, large amounts of eroded soil have been carried away, forming deposits downstream, which in turn degrades the capacity to fulfill these functions. To manage rivers more effectively, we need data on riverbed erosion and deposition. However, environmental factors make it challenging to take measurements in rivers, and data errors tend to prevent researchers from grasping the current state of erosions and deposits. In this context, the aim of the present study is to provide basic data required for river management. To this end, the author made annual measurements with a Real-time Kinematic-Global Positioning System (RTK-GPS) and a total station in Pats Cabin Canyon, Oregon, United States, and also prepared thematic maps of erosion and deposition thickness as well as water depth profiles based on a GIS spatial analysis. Furthermore, the author statistically analyzed the accuracy of three dimensional (3D) measurement points and only used the data that falls within two standard deviations (i.e. ±2σ). In addition, the author determined a threshold for a DEM of Difference (DoD) by installing measurement points in the rivers and taking measurements, and then estimated erosion and deposition thickness within a confidence interval of ±0.1m. Based on the results, the author established reliable data on river depth profiles and thematic maps of erosion and deposition thickness using pre-determined work flows. It is anticipated that the riverbed data can be utilized for effective river management.
As the impacts of climate change have been emerged all the way through society, the potential risks specifically on agricultural water and facilities are recently getting concerned. Evaluating vulnerability of agriculture to climate change on is a time-tested strategy. While a number of researches on the adaption and mitigation of climate change were performed in various aspects for sustainable agricultural production, the vulnerability of management system for agricultural water and infrastructure has not been investigated yet. This study is aimed to clarify the definition of vulnerability to climate change, find the major indicators able to presume the vulnerability, and finally determine the relative importance of the indicators based on the specialist questionnaire survey and its analyses. The lists of indicators for major parts of agricultural water management such as, water use, flood control, reservoir related issues, and pumping and drainage systems are initialized referring to the related precedent studies. The primary survey was conducted in the form of Delphi to complement the list and methods and the main survey was then conducted using AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) technique to quantitatively prioritize the indicators. The results derived in this study would be directly adopted in weighting importance of indicators to investigate the indicator-based vulnerability analysis to climate change in agricultural water and infrastructure management.
