Because of varied functions and characteristics, water soluble polymers have lone attracted much intrest in both academic and industrial fields, especially now in pollution problems such as wastewater treatment through ployrneric flocculants. In this regard, the main objective of this study is to synthesize polymeric floccuants containning hydrophobic group in presence of the potassium persulfate/sodium thiosulfate redox system and to estimate their flocculating ability on the kaolin suspension. In order to test the flocculating power of flocculant prepared on the kaolin suspension system, turbidity of the supernatant liquid, residence time, filtration rate of flocculated samples, have additionally been measured from the flocculation experiments and analysed In comparision with the theoretical background.
To prevent weakly flocculating characters of bottom brewing yeast during first fermentation, various technical investigations were carried out using strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It appeared that the propagation at $10^{\circ}C$ promoted the molecular structure and biochemical composition of cell wall in favor of flocculation. The yeast grown at $20^{\circ}C$ by addition of zinc ion also had a stimulating effect on flocculation behavior during first fermentation cycle. The zinc ion did not influence directly on the changes of cell wall in favor of stronger flocculence. The increased fermentation activity of yeast due to addition zinc ion was rather responsible for the intensified flocculation capacity. It was concluded that the weakly flocculating characters of bottom brewing yeast during first fermentation can be solved by using yeast propagated at $10^{\circ}C$ or by means of yeast by addition of zinc ion during propagation.

Radioactive substances, especially $^{137}Cs$ discharged in the course of Nuclear Power Plant Accident or maintenance of power plants, cause contamination of the soil. For habitation of residents and reuse of industrial land, it is inevitably necessary to decontaminate the soil. This study examines a soil washing process that has actually been used for washing of radioactive-contaminated soil. The soil washing process uses a washing agent to weaken surface tension of the soil and cesium, separating cesium from the soil. In this study, in order to raise the efficiency of the process, a flocculating agent was added to the washing water to remove fine soil and cesium. The cesium concentrations before and after applying the flocculating agent to cesium solution were measured through ICP-OES. When using 0.1 g of J-AF flocculating agent in the experiment, the maximum Cs removal performance was approximately 88%; the minimum value was 67%. Species combinations between cesium and soil were predicted using Visual MINTEQ Code; the ability to reuse the washing water or not, and the removal rate of the fine soil, determined via measurement of the turbidity after applying the flocculating agent, were determined.
Among microorganisms isolated from soil, YJ-66 strain was the best producer of flocculant and was examined for flocculating ability in the active carbon and CaCl2. YJ-66 strain was the best producer of flocculant and was examined for flocculating ability in the active carbon and CaCl2. YJ-66 strain was identified to be a species belonging to the genus Achromobacter. The optimum culture condition for production of bioflocculant with the isolated strain was for 72hrs at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and pH7.5. The favorable carbon, nitrogen sources and inorganic salts for production of the flocculant were sucrose, peptone, MgSO4 and KH2PO4, whose optimal concentrations were 2%. 0.067%, 0.1% and 0.1%, respectively. Addition of the carbon and inorganic salts significantly increased the production of flocculant. Compositions of optimized culture medium for bioflocculant production by Achromobacter sp. YJ-66 were 2% sucrose, 0.067% peptone, 0.1% MgSO4 and 0.1% KH2PO4 in initial pH 7.5 during at 3$0^{\circ}C$ for 72hrs.

About 600 microorganisms isolated from soil, marsh, compost, etc. were examined for their flocculating ability in the kaolin suspension and swine wastewater. Among them, K-199 was the best producer of flocculant and was identified to be a species belong to the genus Corynebacterium. The maximum production of the flocculant from Corynebacterium sp. K-199 was observed in culture medium containing 2% glycerol, 0.4% peptone, 0.3% K$_{2}$HPO$_{4}$, 0.1% CaCO$_{3}$, 0.05% NaCl, 0.1% yeast extract, 0.1% MgSO$_{4}$,7H$_{2}$O and initial pH 7.5 when cultured with rotary shaker controlled at 25$\circ$C and 150 rpm. Under the optimal culture condition with jar fermentor, the maximum production was reached to flocculating activity of 780 units/ml after 4 days. From the results of the activity be fully maintained by periodate oxidization, it suggests that the activity is due to the protein.

For the need of bio-degradable flocculant in stage of wastewater treatment, some cultural conditions of bioflocculant production were optimized with Aeromonas hydrophila KH-54. About 260 strains of type culture and bacteria isolated from marsh, pond, activated sludge, etc were examined for their ability to flocculate kaolin particles and swine wastewater. Among them, KH-54 showed the highest flocculating activity and was identified as Aeromonas hydrophila according to the cultural, morphological and physiological properties. The maximum production of the flocculant secreted by Aeromonas hydrophila KH-54 was observed in culture medium containing 2.0% mannitol, 0.05% ammonium chloride, 0.02% potassium phosphate dibasic, 0.01% $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ and 0.05% yeast extract at initial pH 7.0 when cultured on rotary shaker controlled at $25^{\circ}C$ and 150 rpm. Under the optimized condition, the flocculating ability reached to 770 units/ml of kaolin flocculating activity and 81% of NTU removal efficiency against swine wastewater after 4 days cultivation. The bioflocculant was also effective on various organic wastewaters other than swine wastewater, showing NTU removal rate ranging from 92% to 34%.
Among 120 microorganisms isolated from soil, KF-67 was the best producer of flocculant and was examined for flocculating ability in the kaolin clay and CaCl2 suspension. KF-67 was identified to be a species belong to the genus Agrobacterium sp. The influence of components of the culture medium for flocculant production by Agrobacterium sp. KF-67 was studied. The favorable carbon and inorganic nitrogen source for production of the flocculant were glucose and NH4NO3 and their addition concentrations were 2% and 0.1%, respectively. Addition of the organic nitrogen such as yeast extract, peptone and inorganic salt such as CaCO3 significantly increased the production of flocculant. These result indicated that the production of flocculant by Agrobacterium sp. was significantly affected by both organic nitrogen and inorganic salt. The components of the optimum culture medium were 2% glucose, 0.1% NH4NO3, 0.01% yeast extract, 0.01% peptone, 0.04% CaCO3, 0.03% NaCl in initial pH 7.5 when cultured with rotary shaker controlled at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and 120 rpm. Under the optimum culture medium, flocculant production was highly improved about 76% than that isolation medium.
