As increasing demands for a floating structure expanded from offshore industry facilities to living facilities, it has emerged that necessity of techniques to reduce motions of a floating structure. This study present a floating structure with porosity on the outer surface of the floater. Under each regular and irregular wave, responses of the floater was investigated in frequency domain. The proposed structure is composed of inner and outer floaters, which are connected to each other and the outer wall is perforated, and the heave and the pitch of floaters with different perforation rates (0~30%) were compared with at both the center and the edge. The results showed that pitch responses can be decreased by increasing of perforation rate of the floater. Comparing with responses of the non-perforated floater, those of the proposed floating structure were reduced to above 10% and 2%, respectively for regular and irregular wave conditions.

When ships and offshore plants are flooded or the floating crane is equipped with a heavy object, these floating structures are excessively inclined. In this case, immersion, heel, and trim affecting the hydrostatic restoration performance are very large and are coupled each other. In this paper, in order to calculate a static equilibrium position of floating structures with excessive inclination, the nonlinear governing equations were constructed by sequential linearization. In the governing equation, the immersion, heel, and trim are fully coupled, and the equations are represented using a plane area, a primary moment, and a moment of inertia of the water plane area. Therefore, it is possible to calculate the additional factor related the water plane area for estimating stability. Position and orientation of the floating structure are obtained by iterative calculation. The calculated results are compared with the previous studies in the aspect to the performance and the accuracy.

IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) has been widely used around the power industry as it has good switching performance and its excellent conductance. In order to reduce power loss during switch turn-on state, it is essential to reduce its resistance. However, trade off relationship between breakdown voltage and device conductance is the greatest obstacle on the way of improvement. Floating island structure is one of the solutions. Still, under optimized device condition for the best performance, improvement rate is negligible. Therefore, this paper suggests adding trench gate on floating island structure to eliminate JFET (junction field effect transistor) area to reduce resistance and activate floating island effect. Experimental result by 2D simulation using TCAD, shows 20% improvement of turn-on state voltage drop.

In this paper, noise and vibration reduction for floating-floored ship cabin is studied. A mock-up is built by using 6 mm steel plate, and two identical cabins are made for simulation of ship cabins. When a speaker is used as a sound and vibration sources, it is shown that floating floor is more effective in isolating sound than bare deck by 2-5 dB. It is also shown that structure-borne noise of the bare deck is greater than that of floating-floored deck by 3-10 dB. For tapping machine excitation, it is found that the effect of floating floor in airborne noise and structure-borne noise reduction reaches up to 40-50 dB for high frequency ranges.

The main objective of the present research was investigating the effects of a floating wave barrier installed in front of an offshore jacket structure on the wave height, base shear, and overturning moment. A jacket model with the height of 4.55 m was fabricated and tested in the 402 m-long wave flume of NIMALA marine laboratory. The jacket was tested at the water depth of 4 m subjected to the random waves with a JONSWAP energy spectrum. Three input wave heights were chosen for the tests: 20 cm, 23 cm, and 28 cm. Two different cross sections with the same area were selected for the wave barrier: square and rhombus. Results showed that the average decrease in the jacket's base shear due to the presence of a floating wave barrier with square and rhombus cross section was 24.67% and 34.29%, respectively. The use of wave barriers with square and rhombus cross sections also resulted in 19.78% and 33.11% decrease in the jacket's overturning moment, respectively. Hence, it can be concluded that a floating wave barrier can significantly reduce the base shear and overturning moment in an offshore jacket structure; and a rhombus cross section is more effective than an equivalent square section.
Warm or waste water discharged from offshore-based facilities often causes environmental polution as it is transported to coastal area due to tidal actions. In this research a floating-type current control structure is introduced in order to reduce the pollutant spreading in the coastal area. Effectivenss of the structure is investigated through the numerical experiment which is based on a 3-D finite difference multi-level scheme. The warm-water spreading in the bay is reduced when the draft of the structure increases and its optimum draft is found to be between 0.25h and 0.65h, where h is the water depth. The proposed structure is also tested in the Gohyun Bay and it ts proven to be applied to controllling pollutant spreading if its draft is properly chosen.

The floating islands have been constructed for the water quality improvement and the biodiversity conservation in an disturbed aquatic ecosystem. We made floating islands consisted of a special float and substrates of coconut fibers implanted with four emergent macrophytes such as Phragmites australis, Zizania latifolia, Iris pseudoacorus, Typha angustifolia. Vegetation structure and plant growth were compared between on the floating islands and on ground in order to select suitable plants for the construction of floating islands. Emergent-macrophytic vegetation on the floating islands showed lower coverages and higher plant biodiversity due to natural introduction of various hydrophytes and hygrophytes. Shoot density was increased on floating islands except for Zizania latifolia. From the point of coverage and density of plants, Phragmites australis and Iris pseudoacorus were suitable for floating islands. Total biomass of emergent macrophytes was decreased on the floating islands. The belowground/aboveground biomass ratio of floating islands was higher than that of the ground. Out of planted macrophytes, Iris pseudoacorus with a high belowground/aboveground biomass ratio could be evaluated a suitable plant for the floating islands because a plenty of its root is profitable to adapt with the nutrient-limited environment of floating islands.

The effects of floating islands on the changes in phytoplankton community structure were investigated in a small artificial pond. The floating islands planted with various emergent macrophytes covered 35% of total water surface area of the pond. Total 17 genera and 25 species of phytoplankton were found in the pond, of which Dinophyceae was 1 genera and 1 species, Cyanophyceae 1 genera and 1 species, Bacillariophyceae 6 genera and 8 species, and Chlorophyceae 9 genera and 15 species. Dominant phytoplanktons under floating islands were changed from Aphanizomenon sp. as a Cyanophyceae to Golenkinia radiata, Kirchneriella contorta and Micractinium pusillum as a Chlorophyceae for 56 days after the construction of floating islands on July 24, 2001. The changes of dominant phytoplanktons of the control without floating islands were similar to those under floating islands in July and August, but Aphanizomenon sp. was rapidly increased in the control sites in September. About 99% of the cell number of Aphanizomenon sp. was disappeared for a month after construction of floating islands. Species diversity of phytoplankton under the floating islands of Iris pseudoacorus was higher than those of other macrophytes as well as the control without floating islands. The cell numbers of Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae were fewer under the floating islands of I. pseudoacorus than those of other macrophytes. Our results showed that the floating islands could be a useful eco-technique for the control of water bloom by Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae in a pond ecosystem.

This paper investigates the natural modes of moduled floating structure with module unit connector. As an example structure, a floating parking place($120m{\times}60m$) is considered. In the evaluation of natural modes, numerical equations are formulated by FEM(Finite Element Method) and the natural modes are solved by the subspace iteration method. By comparing results for various stiffness of module unit connector, the effect of stiffness of unit connector is examined.
