Cyclic loading tests were carried out on six half-scale reinforced concrete beam-column subassemblages designed to the current Chinese Seismic Design Code for Buildings. The deformation behavior and restoring force characteristics of the subassemblages were studied. Emphasis was directed on their seismic behavior and deformation components. Based on test data and a simplified analysis model of the global and local deformation, the contribution of the deformation components due to beam flexure, column flexure, joint shear, and slippage of longitudinal reinforcement in the joint to the global deformation of subassemblages at different displacement amplitudes of cyclic loading was investigated.
This paper proposes a novel frame element on Winkler-Pasternak foundation for analysis of a non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) member resting on foundation. These structural members represent flexural-shear critical members, which are commonly found in existing buildings designed and constructed with the old seismic design standards (inadequately detailed transverse reinforcement). As a result, these structures always experience shear failure or flexure-shear failure under seismic loading. To predict the characteristics of these non-ductile structures, efficient numerical models are required. Therefore, the novel frame element on Winkler-Pasternak foundation with inclusion of the shear-flexure interaction effect is developed in this study. The proposed model is derived within the framework of a displacement-based formulation and fiber section model under Timoshenko beam theory. Uniaxial nonlinear material constitutive models are employed to represent the characteristics of non-ductile RC frame and the underlying foundation. The shear-flexure interaction effect is expressed within the shear constitutive model based on the UCSD shear-strength model as demonstrated in this paper. From several features of the presented model, the proposed model is simple but able to capture several salient characteristics of the non-ductile RC frame resting on foundation, such as failure behavior, soil-structure interaction, and shear-flexure interaction. This confirms through two numerical simulations.
The primary mirror system in a satellite camera is an opto-mechanically coupled system for a reason that optical and mechanical behaviors are intricately interactive. In order to enhance the opto-mechanical performance of the primary mirror system, opto-mechanical behaviors should be thoroughly investigated by using various analysis procedures such as elastic, thermo-elastic, optical and eigenvalue analysis. In this paper, optimal design of the bipod flexure mounts for high opto-mechanical performance is performed. Optomechanical performances considered in this paper are RMS wavefront error under the gravity and thermal loading conditions and 1st natural frequency of the mirror system. The procedures of the flexure mounts design based on design of experiments and statistics is as follows. The experiments for opto-mechanical analysis are constructed based on the tables of orthogonal arrays and analysis of each experiment is carried out. In order to deal with the multiple opto-mechanical properties, MADM (Multiple-attribute decision making) is employed. From the analysis results, the critical design variables of the flexure mounts which have dominant influences on opto-mechanical performance are determined through analysis of variance and F-test. The regression model in terms of the critical design variables is constructed based on the response surfaceanalysis. Then the critical design variables are optimized from the regression model by using SQP algorithm. Opto-mechanical performance of the optimal bipod flexure mounts is verified through analysis.
Purpose: This investigation was designed to estimate the flexure strength, density, and microstructure of the colored and uncolored zirconia oxide ceramics for fixed partial denture. Material and Methods: LAVATM All Ceramic(3M-ESPE, USA), Cercon Smart Ceramic(Dentsply, USA), and Z-match Ceramic(DentAim, Korea) were used for this study. All specimen was fabricated by ASTM C1161. After preparing $25{\times}2{\times}1.5mm$ of rectangular column and sitting rectangular column on universal test machine (UTM), external supporting point distance is 20.0 mm, internal supporting point distance is 10.0 mm. Specimen was loaded with 0.2 mm/min of cross head speed until fracture and at the time of broken of specimen, measuring loading value with PC software. Results: The results were obtained as follows: 1. Flexure strength of uncolored zirconia was higher than that of colored zirconia. 2. In uncolored zirconia, flexure strength of LAVATM Ceramic was more higher than the other ceramics, and it showed statistical difference between LAVATM Ceramic and Cercon Smart Ceramic (P<0.05). 3. In colored zirconia, flexure strength of LAVATM Ceramic was more higher than the other ceramics too, but they did not show statistical difference (p>0.05). 4. In Weibull analysis, Characterastic strength was showed highest value to uncolored LAVATM Ceramic and lowest value to Z-match ceramic, and Weibull modulus(m) of uncolored zirconia was higher than that of colored zirconia. 5. In XRD analysis, all group except Z-match showed high peak of t-ZrO2 but they did not show m-ZrO2. Colored zirconia group showed lower peak of t-ZrO2 than that of uncolored zirconia group.
Although earthquakes generate random cyclic lateral loading on structures, a quasi-static cyclic loading pattern with gradually increasing amplitude has been commonly used in the laboratory tests because of its relatively low cost and simplicity compared with pseudo-dynamic and shake table tests. The number, amplitudes and sequence of cycles must be chosen appropriately as important parameters of a quasi-static cyclic loading pattern in order to account for cumulative damage matter. This paper aims to reach a new cyclic displacement pattern to be used in quasi-static tests of well-confined, flexure-dominated reinforced concrete (RC) columns. The main parameters of the study are sectional dimensions, percentage of longitudinal reinforcement, axial force intensity and earthquake types, namely, far-fault and near-fault.
Reinforced concrete shear walls with deficient reinforcement details are tested under cyclic loading. The deficiency of reinforcement details includes insufficient splice length in U-stirrups at the ends of horizontal reinforcement and boundary column dowel bars found in existing low- to mid-rise Korean buildings designed non-seismically. Three test specimens have rectangular, babel and flanged sections, respectively. Flexure- and shear-controlled models for reinforced concrete shear walls specified in ASCE/SEI 41-13 are compared with the flexural and shear components of force-displacement relation extracted separately from the top displacement of the specimen based on the displacement data measured at diverse locations. Modification of the shear wall models in ASCE/SEI 41-13 is proposed in order to account for the effect of bar slip, cracking loads in flexure and shear. The proposed modification shows better approximation of the test results compared to the original models.
Typically, beams that form part of structural systems are subjected to vertical distributed loading along their length. Distributed loading affects moment and shear distribution, and consequently spread of inelasticity, along the beam length. However, the finite element models developed so far for seismic analysis of frame structures either ignore the effect of vertical distributed loading on spread of inelasticity or consider it in an approximate manner. In this paper, a beam-type finite element is developed, which is capable of considering accurately the effect of uniform distributed loading on spreading of inelastic deformations along the beam length. The proposed model consists of two gradual spread inelasticity sub-elements accounting explicitly for inelastic flexural and shear response. Following this approach, the effect of distributed loading on spreading of inelastic flexural and shear deformations is properly taken into account. The finite element is implemented in the seismic analysis of plane frame structures with beam members controlled either by flexure or shear. It is shown that to obtain accurate results the influence of distributed beam loading on spreading of inelastic deformations should be taken into account in the inelastic seismic analysis of frame structures.
Experiments were performed to explore the hysteretic performance of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) cross-shaped columns. Nine specimens were designed and tested under the combined action of compression, flexure, shear and torsion. Torsion-bending ratio (i.e., 0, 0.14, 0.21) and steel forms (i.e., Solid - web steel, T - shaped steel, Channel steel) were considered in the test. Both failure processes and modes were obtained during the whole loading procedure. Based on experimental data, seismic indexes, such as bearing capacity, ductility and energy dissipation were investigated in detail. Experimental results suggest that depending on the torsion-bending ratio, failure modes of SRC cross-shaped columns are bending failure, flexure-torsion failure and torsion-shear failure. Shear - displacement hysteretic loops are fuller than torque - twist angle hysteretic curves. SRC cross-shaped columns exhibit good ductility and deformation capacity. In the range of test parameters, the existence of torque does not reduce the shear force but it reduces the displacement and bending energy dissipation capacity. What is more, the bending energy dissipation capacity increases with the rising of displacement level, while the torsion energy dissipation capacity decreases.
Reinforced Concrete (RC) shear walls are widely used in Nuclear power plants as effective lateral force resisting elements of the structure and these may experience nonlinear behavior for higher earthquake demand. Short shear walls of aspect ratio less than 1.5 generally experience combined shear flexure interaction. This paper presents the results of the displacement-controlled experiments performed on six RC short shear walls with varying aspect ratios (1, 1.25 and 1.5) for monotonic and reversed quasi-static cyclic loading. Simulation of the shear walls is then carried out by Finite element modeling and also by macro modeling considering the coupled shear and flexure behaviour. The shear response is estimated by softened truss theory using the concrete model given by Vecchio and Collins (1994) with a modification in softening part of the model and flexure response is estimated using moment curvature relationship. The accuracy of modeling is validated by comparing the simulated response with experimental one. Moreover, based on the experimental work a multi-linear hysteretic model is proposed for short shear walls. Finally ultimate load, drift, ductility, stiffness reduction and failure pattern of the shear walls are studied in details and hysteretic energy dissipation along with damage index are evaluated.

The paper presents the development of an adaptable strut-and-tie model that can be applied to the design or analysis of four-pile caps that support axial compression and biaxial flexure from a supported rectangular column. Due to an absence of relevant test data, the model is validated using nonlinear finite element analyses (NLFEA). The results indicate that the use of the proposed model would lead to safe and economical designs. The proposed model can be easily extended to any number of piles, providing a rational procedure for the design of wide range of pile caps.
