  • It is important to consider the effect of depth when estimating the ultimate strength of a concrete flexural member because the strength always decreases with an increase of member size. In this study, the size effect of reinforced concrete beam was experimentally investigated. For this purpose, a series of beam specimens subjected to 2-point bending load were tested. More specifically, three different depth (d=15, 30, and 60 cm) of reinforced concrete beams were tested to investigate the size effect. The shear-span to depth ratio (a/d=3) and thickness (20 cm) of the specimens were kept constant where the size effect in out-of-plan direction is not considered. The test results are fitted using least square method (LSM) to obtain parameters for modified size effect law (MSEL). The analysis results indicate that the flexural compression strength and ultimate strain decreases as the specimen size increases. Finally, more general parameters for MSEL are suggested.

  • In this paper, the flexural strength ($f_{fs}$) and splitting tensile strength ($f_{sts}$) of concrete containing different proportions of fly ash have been modeled by using gene expression programming (GEP). Two GEP models called GEP-I and GEP-II are constituted to predict the $f_{fs}$ and $f_{sts}$ values, respectively. In these models, the age of specimen, cement, water, sand, aggregate, superplasticizer and fly ash are used as independent input parameters. GEP-I model is constructed by 292 experimental data and trisected into 170, 86 and 36 data for training, testing and validating sets, respectively. Similarly, GEP-II model is constructed by 278 experimental data and trisected into 142, 70 and 66 data for training, testing and validating sets, respectively. The experimental data used in the validating set of these models are independent from the training and testing sets. The results of the statistical parameters obtained from the models indicate that the proposed empirical models have good prediction and generalization capability.

  • The stitching process has been widely utilized for the improvement of through-thickness property of the conventional laminated composites. This paper rep0l1s the effects of stitching on the flexural and interlaminar shear properties of multiaxial warp knitted composites in order to examine the performance improvements. Considered parameters are as follows: the stacking regularity of the multiaxial warp knits, the stitch spacings, the stitching types, the stitching location, and the location of compression fixture nose. These parameters have little effect on the flexural and interlaminar shear properties, except for the case of stitching location. Stitching on the $0^{\circ}$ fibers showed the lowest flexural strength and modulus ($12\%$reduction for both properties). The stitch spacing of 5mm resulted 8% reduction in interlaminar strength compared with 10mm spacing.

  • The influence of the interface imperfect bonding on the flexural wave dispersion in the bilayered hollow circular cylinder is studied with utilizing three-dimensional linear theory of elastodynamics. The shear-spring type model is used for describing the imperfect bonding on the interface between the layers and the degree of the imperfectness is estimated through the dimensionless shear-spring parameters which enter the mentioned model. The method for finding the analytical expressions for the sought values and dispersion equation are discussed and detailed. Numerical results on the lowest first and second modes are presented and analyzed. These results are obtained for various values of the shear-spring parameters. According to these results, in particular, it is established that as a results of the imperfection of the bonding between the layers the new branches of the dispersion related the first fundamental mode arise and the character of the dispersion curve related to the second mode becomes more complicated.

  • Until recently tensile stresses in concrete have not been considered, since it does not affect the ultimate strength of reinforced concrete flexural members significantly. However, to verify the load-deflection relationship, the effect of tensile stresses between reinforcing bars and concrete, so-called tension stiffening effect must be taken into account. Main parameters of the tension stiffening behavior are known as concrete strength, and bond between concrete and reinforcing bars. In this study a total of twenty specimen subject to bending was tested with different concrete strength, coverage, and de-bonding length of longitudinal bars. The effects of these parameters on the flexural rigidity, crack initiation and propagation were carefully checked and analyzed.

  • A series of 15 reinforced concrete beams was tested to explore the effects of polymer repair on damaged beams. The key parameters for this study were the repair materials, repair methods, repair depths and repair locations. The repaired specimens failed by a typical flexural mode, showing minor interface failure. The results show that epoxy, polyester resins and latex modified cementitous mortars are effective for repairing the concrete beams. The results also show that the depth and the location of the repair do not change significantly the flexural preformance of the repaired beams.

  • Considering the relatively large amount of stable flexural teat results available for steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and their dependency on the constitutive behavior of the material, a technique called “System Identification” is used for interpretating the flexural test data in order to obtain basic information on the tensile constitutive behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete. “System Identification” was successful in obtaining optimum sets of parameters which provide satisfactory matches between the measured and predicted flexural load-deflection relationships.

  • The ACI 318 stress block parameters have been closely examined for validity of their values in evaluation of flexural strength and deformability. For this the conventional definition of stress block has been used. The comparison of parameter values between ACI stress blocks and the exact approach implies that an alternative idealization other than the rectangular stress block may be required.

  • Stress-strain relation and stress block parameters of polymer concrete flexural compression members were experimentally investigated. For these purposes, a series of C-shaped polymer concrete specimens subjected to axial compressive load was tested. Based on the test results, we proposed an equation by which the stress-strain relation of polymer concrete can be predicted. In this model, we took account the slope of descending branch beyond the peak stress point of single curve. The proposed equation was numerically integrated to compute the rectangular stress block parameters. Computed ${\beta}_1$ was greater than the values prescribed in ACI 318 Code for cement concrete, and $\gamma$ was about 0.85 that is similar to the value regulated in the ACI.

  • Influences of different variables that affect the effective flexural rigidity of reinforced concrete (RC) members are not considered in the most seismic codes. Furthermore, in the last decades, the application of steel fibers in concrete matrix designs has been increased, requiring development of an accurate analytical procedure to calculate the effective flexural rigidity of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) members. In this paper, first, a nonlinear analytical procedure is proposed to calculate the SFRC members' effective flexural rigidity. The proposed model's accuracy is confirmed by comparing the results obtained from nonlinear analysis with those recorded from the experimental testing. Then a parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of different parameters such as varying axial load and steel fiber are then investigated through moment-curvature analysis of various SFRC (normal-strength concrete) sections. The obtained results show that increasing the steel fiber volume percentage increases the effective flexural rigidity. Also it's been indicated that the varying axial load affects the effective flexural rigidity. Lastly, proper equations are developed to estimate the effective flexural rigidity of SFRC members.
