  • This study was aimed to describe the population dynamics and secondary production of Tapes philppinarum on Chohwa and Toksan tidal flats in Kwangyang Bay, from June 1994 to July 1995. The size distributions in shell length showed bimodal patterns from June 1994 to April 1995. Thereafter the distribution changed to the passage of time, indicating an increase in shell length. The mean densities decreased gradually with month. Chohwa A sustained highestdensity, followed by Chohwa B, Toksan C, and Toksan D. The recruitment of new year class occurred first on the upper tidal flat, and then moved to the lower tidal flat. The mean biomass in flesh dry weight of each year class increased in spring just before the spawning period, and thereafter decreased progressively. Annual mean biomass wasrecorded as 170.7 g m$\^$-2/ at Chohwa A, 220.7 g m$\^$-2/ at Chohwa B, 21.8 g m$\^$-2/ at Toksan C, and 45.2 g m$\^$-2/ at toksan D. Annual productions of Ruditapes philippinarum were estimated as 259.72 g m$\^$-2/ yr$\_$-1/ at Chohwa A, 359.79 g m$\^$-2/ yr$\_$-1/ at Chohwa B, 45.02 g m$\^$-2/ yr$\_$-1/ at Toksan c, 68.88 g m$\^$-2/ yr$\_$-1/ at Toksan D. Annual productions were much higher on Chohwa tidal flat than those on Toksan tidal flat. While P:B ratio were higher on Toksan tidal flat as 1.70 than those on Chohwa tidal flat as 1.58. In conclusion, the Chohwa tidal flat showed higher biomass and producion of Ruditapes philippinarum, whereas the Toksan tidal flat showed higher P:B ratio. The total amount of potential food might influence on the density, biomass nad produciton, whereas the amount of food and space per individual might influence on the growth rate and P:B ratio.

  • The purpose of this research was to provide the information needed for improving the elderly housing education and the elderly housing contents of Technology and Home Economics textbook. Thus, the elderly housing contents of current Technology and Home Economics textbook were categorized. Then, a total of 233 teachers were surveyed to examine their importance perception on the elderly housing contents. Elderly housing contents were grouped into S categories, each of which was named 'safety and safety management', 'room plan for the elderly', 'shrinking stage in family life cycle and dependency stage in housing life cycle','a house for 3-generation extended family', and 'universal design'. Teachers' importance perception was generally high for 'safety and safety management' and especially for 'safety and safety management' of bathroom(protection against slippery floor, safety bar, the appropriate position and height of shower, bathtub, and wash stand) ; the basic guidelines of 'room plan for the elderly'(emergency call, closely located bathroom, flat and non-slippery floor) ; the general guidelines during shrinking stage in family life cycle and dependency stage in housing life cycle'(protection equipments against safety accident, emergency call, flat and non-slippery floor) ; independent life among 3-generation extended family members(bathroom for the elderly, space plan for independent life among extended family members) ; the basic design guidelines of universal design(safety bar in bathroom, flat floor) and the guidelines of universal design which were especially helpful for wheelchair users(enough empty space in front of door and in corridor, wide door and corridor). Recommendations for the elderly housing education and the elderly housing contents of Technology and Home Economics textbook were that 'emergency call','safety bar in bathroom' and 'flat and non-slippery floor' were the most basic guidelines for elderly housing; that 'enough empty space in front of door and in corridor', 'wide door and corridor', 'low and wide steps', 'ramp for wheelchair users' and 'D-type or lever-type door handle' were most recommendable guidelines for universal design; that 'need for elderly housing', 'types of elderly housing', 'alternatives and choices of dependency stage in housing life cycle' and 'house plans for shrinking stage in family life cycle' were required guidelines for increasing elderly-only family.

  • This paper presents the theoretical developments of an exact finite strip for the buckling and initial post-buckling analyses of isotropic flat plates. The so-called exact finite strip is assumed to be simply supported out-of-plane at the loaded ends. The strip is developed based on the concept that it is effectively a plate. The present method, which is designated by the name Full-analytical Finite Strip Method in this paper, provides an efficient and extremely accurate buckling solution. In the development process, the Von-Karman's equilibrium equation is solved exactly to obtain the buckling loads and the corresponding form of out-of-plane buckling deflection modes. The investigation of thin flat plate buckling behavior is then extended to an initial post-buckling study with the assumption that the deflected form immediately after the buckling is the same as that obtained for the buckling. It is noted that in the present method, only one of the calculated out-of-plane buckling deflection modes, corresponding to the lowest buckling load, i.e., the first mode is used for the initial post-buckling study. Thus, the postbuckling study is effectively a single-term analysis, which is attempted by utilizing the so-called semi-energy method. In this method, the Von-Karman's compatibility equation governing the behavior of isotropic flat plates is used together with a consideration of the total strain energy of the plate. Through the solution of the compatibility equation, the in-plane displacement functions which are themselves related to the Airy stress function are developed in terms of the unknown coefficient in the assumed out-of-plane deflection function. These in-plane and out-of-plane deflected functions are then substituted in the total strain energy expressions and the theorem of minimum total potential energy is applied to solve for the unknown coefficient. The developed method is subsequently applied to analyze the initial postbuckling behavior of some representative thin flat plates for which the results are also obtained through the application of a semi-analytical finite strip method. Through the comparison of the results and the appropriate discussion, the knowledge of the level of capability of the developed method is significantly promoted.

  • The pitch tool provides superior surface roughness compared to other types of polishing tool. However, because of difficulty in handling the pitch tool, pitch tool polishing has rarely been analysed, which led many craftsman to eliminate the pitch tool from their experiences. We found that it was possible to use a pitch tool in the well-determined material removal after the completion of computer simulation and experiment. We could simulate the TIF of the pitch tool with 79% accuracy. Also, after five successive simulations of polishing process on a 280 mm optical flat, the surface p-v error was found to be reduced from $1{\mu}m$ to 168 nm.

  • We present the properties of galaxies in filaments around the Virgo cluster with respect to their vertical distance from the filament spine. Using the NASA-Sloan Atlas and group catalogs, we select galaxies that do not belong to groups in filaments. The filament member galaxies are then defined as those located within 3.5 scale length from the filament spine. The filaments are mainly (~86%) composed of low-mass dwarf galaxies of logh2M∗/M⊙ < 9 dominantly located on the blue cloud in color-magnitude diagrams. We observe that the g - r color and stellar mass of galaxies correlate with their vertical distance from the filament spine in which the color becomes red and stellar mass decreases with increasing vertical filament distance. The galaxies were divided into two subsamples in different stellar mass ranges, with lower-mass (logh2M∗/M⊙ ≤ 8) galaxies showing a clear negative g-r color gradient, whereas higher-mass (logh2M∗/M⊙ > 8) galaxies have a flat distribution against the vertical filament distance. We observe a negative EW(Hα) gradient for higher-mass galaxies, whereas lower-mass galaxies show no distinct variation in EW(Hα) against the vertical filament distance. In contrast, the NUV - r color distribution of higher-mass galaxies shows no strong dependence on the vertical filament distance, whereas the lower-mass galaxies show a distinct negative NUV - r color gradient. We do not witness clear gradients of HI fraction in either the higher- or lower-mass subsamples. We propose that the negative color and stellar mass gradients of galaxies can be explained by mass assembly from past galaxy mergers at different vertical filament distances. In addition, galaxy interactions might be responsible for the contrasting features of EW(Hα) and NUV - r color distributions between the higher- and lower-mass subsamples. The HI fraction distributions of the two subsamples suggest that ram-pressure stripping and gas accretion could be ignorable processes in the Virgo filaments.

  • This study has been designed to grasp the present situation, shapes and meaning of the standing stones and rock pillars in the whole area of Noseong Mountain Fortress in Nonsan City which have never been academically reported yet. Accordingly, the research was carried out to grasp the spatial identity of Noseong Mt. and Noseong Mountain Fortress and the dispersion of standing stones scattered around inside and outside Noseong Mountain Fortress, while the shapes and structural characteristics of stones were investigated and analyzed focusing on Chongsuk Temple, which was considered to have the highest density of standing stones and greatest values for preservation as a cultural property. In consideration of the reference to the 'Top Sa' (tower temple) at the 'Bul Woo Jo' (Article about Buddhism Houses) of 'Shinjoong Dongguk Yeoji Seungram', theoretical existence of the temple according to surveying investigation, and the excavation records of roof tile pieces with the name of 'Gwan Eum Temple', it is presumed that there had been a Buddhist sanctum inside the fortress and it could be connected to the carved letters, 'Chongsuk Temple'. According the observation survey, the 6th place of standing stones among many other places inside the fortress shows that Chongsuk Temple appears to have the strong characteristics of artificially constructed space in consideration of the size of trees and stones, the composite trend of tree and stone composition, and trace of the adjacent well and strand and the construction of stairway leading to the stone gate. Along with the constellation of the Big Dipper carved on a rock at the same space, the stones, on which the letters of 'Shinseonam', 'Chilseongam' and 'Daejangam' were carved, including 'Chongsuksa', and the carved statue of Buddha, which was assumed to be Avalokitesvara Guan Yin, have offered clue which make it possible to infer that the space was a space for Chilseong and Mountain god(Folk Belief) that had originated from the combination of Buddhism, Taoism and folk religion. According to the actual measurement of standing stones at Chonsuk Temple, it was identified that there were big differences in height among 24 stones in total, ranging from 402~29cm and the averaged distance between each stone appeared to be 23.6cm. And the shape of stones appeared to be standing or flat, and various stones such as mountain-like stones and Buddha-like stones were placed in a special arrangement or assorted arrangement, but the direction of the stones had a consistency pointing to the west. And comparing to the trace of construction of ZEN Landscape Garden well known in the country, the three flat stones except for the standing and shaped stones appeared to have the shape of meditation statue, which is the typical formational factors of a ZEN Landscape Garden, on the basis of formational technique of stones. Among them, the flat stone facing the Buddhist saint statue, was formed by way of symbolization of three-mountain stone, which was assumed to be an offering stone for sacrificial food rather than carrying out ZEN Meditation. In consideration of the formation of standing stones at Chong-suk Temple, which was carried out in the composite stoning method based using the scalene triangle with ratio of 3:5:7 in order to seek the in-depth beauty based on the stone statues of three Buddhas where the three factors such as heaven, earth and humans are embodied in the elevated or flat formation, the stones at Chongsuk Temple and the space seemed to the trace of contracted garden construction that was formed with stones for a temple, so that could be used for ZEN meditation.

  • Sound absorption characteristics of membrane system which are used in stadiums and arenas were investigated. Theoretical studies on acoustic properties of single and double leaf permeable membrane conducted. Also, experimental studies on sound absorption characteristics of combined membrane system that is composed of outer and inner membrane material were conducted. In this study, sound absorption characteristics of each membrane were investigated by experiments in reverberation chamber. 4 types of permeable membranes and a non-permeable membrane were used for experiments. Air space behind membrane material and tension on the membrane was varied. Sound absorption performance of permeable membrane materials was confirmed. As increasing air space behind the membrane material, sound absorption coefficient was increased. In a resonance absorption frequency band sound absorption coefficient varied more dramatically. Sound absorption characteristics were flat in mid and high frequency range and sound absorption coefficient was from 0,3 to 0,5. Also sound absorption coefficient was increased by the increment of surface density and air permeability of membrane. However, over the certain value of air permeability, sound absorption coefficient was decreased. These results can be used as design factors and method for the room acoustic design of dome-stadiums and large free-form buildings.

  • Transition location of boundary layers over airfoils is predicted by using PSE(Parabolized Stability Equations) and $e^N$-method. Growth rates of disturbances are obtained from the PSE analysis and the N-factor curves are calculated by integrating the growth rates. The computational code developed in the present study is validated by comparing the computed results with the well known data for the cases of flat plate boundary layers and airfoils. Predictions of transition location are made for the boundary layers over NACA0012, NLF(1)-0414F, and NLF(1)-0416 airfoil. Predicted transition locations are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • The effect of pintle shape on the thrust level of pintle-nozzle Solid Rocket Motor(PNSRM) was studied numerically using the Spalart-Allmaras turbulent model of Fluent. Mass flow rate of PNSRM was always less than theoretical value and the extent of decrease in mass flow rate grew in the large pintle because of increase in the relative boundary layer thickness between pintle body and nozzle wall. The bigger pintle size was, the more thrust of pintle tip pressure was obtained. Meanwhile the more thrust of nozzle and chamber pressure decreased. Hence, total thrust of big pintle was less than a small pintle under same throat area condition. Specific impulse was relatively flat for all pintle shape.

  • Scanning white-light interferometry is an important measurement option for many surfaces. However, serious profile measurement errors can be present when measuring free-form surfaces being highly curved or tilted. When the object surface slope is not zero, the object and reference rays are no longer common path and optical aberrations impact the measurement. Aberrations mainly occur at the beam splitter in the interference objective and from misalignment in the optical system. Both effects distort the white-light interference signal when the surface slope is not zero. In this paper, we describe a modified version of white-light interferometry for eliminating these measurement errors and improving the accuracy of white-light interferometry. Moreover, we report systematic errors that are caused by optical aberrations when the object is not flat, and compare our proposed method with the conventional processing algorithm using the random ball test.
