Studies on the Stabilization of Rayon Fabrics for Preparing Carbon Fabrics: 2. Fast Isothermal Stabilization Processes at High Temperature

  • In the present study, fast isothermal stabilization processes for rayon precursor fabrics were performed at $350^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ within 3 minutes and the chemical and physical characteristics of the stabilized fabrics were investigated. In addition, rayon precursor fabrics were pre-treated with three different phosphorous-based flame retardants and then stabilized. The effect of flame retardants on the chemical composition, thermal shrinkage, weight change, thermal stability and XRD results was examined, comparing with those of the precursor fabrics. The result showed that the stabilization of rayon fabrics was most effective as the stabilization temperature was $350^{\circ}C$, the stabilization time was 3 min, and the pre-treatment with phosphoric acid of 1 vol%. The carbon contents of stabilized rayon fabrics were increased with increasing stabilization temperature and time, whereas the oxygen contents were decreased. Also, it is likely that the pre-treatment with phosphoric acid plays a role in retarding the change of chemical structure of rayon fabric. The XRD result was quite consistent with the result showing the effect of phosphoric acid on the chemical composition, thermal shrinkage and weight reduction of rayon fabric.

  • In order to simulate and visually observe combustion phenomena in cylindrical radial-flow porous inert media, a radial multi-channel burner, made of transparent quartz plates, was fabricated. Flame stabilization characteristics and its pulsating instability in the burner were experimentally investigated with respect to various mixture flow rates and equivalence ratio. As a result, five different flame behaviors, such as stable flame, pulsating instability, sudden extinction, blowout and unstable extinction, were observed. Mean radial position of circularly arranged multi-flame and its averaged burning velocity were measured and then compared to the freely propagating flame. The multi-flame pulsation frequency is about several tens of Hz and it is supposed to be generated by the heat diffusion enhancement to cold pre-mixture by the intensive gas-solid interaction.

  • Stabilization characteristics of highly $N_2$-diluted $CH_4-O_2$ flame in an axially two-section porous inert medium were experimentally investigated for its application to the waste gas scrubber in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The flame behaviors were observed with respect to the fuel and $N_2$ flow rates and the equivalence ratios. As a result, four kinds of flame behaviors such as stable, flashback crossing the interface, blowout and sudden extinction were observed. It was also found that there exists two flame regime divided by a critical fuel flow rate. In addition, the flame stability was discussed based on the $N_2$ index which means the abatement capacity of our combustor in scrubbing the waste gas from the semiconductor processes.

연료액적 주변의 비정상 층류 화염장 해석 (Numerical Simulation of Transient Laminar Reacting Flows Around Fuel Droplets)

  • The transient laminar reacting flows around fuel droplet have been numerically analyzed. The physical models used in this study can account for the variable thermophysical properties and the chemistry is represent by the one-step global reaction model. The present study is focused on the vaporization and ignition characteristics, flame structure including wake flame, transition flame and envelope flame, and interaction between droplets. Special emphasis is given to the triple flame structure and flame stabilization.

연료분출을 수반하는 보염기 후류에 형성되는 확산화염의 보염특성 (Stabilization Characteristics of the Diffusion Flame Formed in the Wake of Bluff Body with Fuel Injection)

  • 보염기 후류에 형성되는 화산회생의 보염특성을 고찰하기 위하여 연료 분출각의 변화, 난류발생격자의 설치, 재순환영역 내에 보조 연료의 공급에 따른 화염의 안정범위, 재순환영역의 길이 및 온도, 재순환영역주변의 난류강도 분포를 측정, 고찰하였다. 재순환영역의 길이는 주 연료 분출량의 변화에 따른 영향을 받지 않지만, 연료 분출각 및 주류유속의 변화, 보조 연료의 공급 난류발생격자의 설치 등에 따라 영향을 받는다. 확산화염의 경우 일반적으고 재순환영역의 길이가 길수록 보염성이 불량하지만, 난류발생격자를 설치한 경우에는 재순환영역의 길이가 길수록 보염성이 양호하다. 재순환영역의 온도는 연료 분출각의 변화, 보조 연료의 공급, 난류발생격사의 설치 등에 따라 영향을 받으며, 이론 혼합기 상태에서 최고값에 도달한다. 일반적으로 재순환영역의 온도가 낮을수록 보염성이 양호하지만. 난류발생격자를 설치한 경우에는 재순환영역의 온도가 낮을수록 보염성이 불량하다. 화염이 형성되는 보염기 후류 영역에 대한 난류강도는 격자의 직경이나 구속비가 큰 난류발생 격자를 설치한 경우에 크게 나타나며, 난류강도가 강 할수록 보염성이 불량하다. 연료 분출각의 변화, 난류발생격자의 설치, 재순환영역 내에 보조 연료의 공급 등의 방법으로 확산화염의 보염특성을 제어할 수 있다.

  • An experimental study is made on turbulent diffusion flames stabilized by a circular cylinder in a divergence flow. In this paper, stabilization characteristics and flame structure are examined by varying the divergence angle of duct and position of a circular cylinder. The fuel used is a commercial grade gaseous propane injected by two slit of rod. It is found that the positive pressure gradient greatly influences the eddy structure behind the rod. and that two different kinds of combustion patterns exist at the blowoff limit depending on the divergent angle of duct. They are distinguished by their wake structures: one associated with Karman vortex shedding, the other without it. Also, the blowoff velocity in the former is found to be higher than in the later.

  • Influence of changing combustor pressure on flame stabilization and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission in the swirl-stabilized flame with secondary fuel injection was investigated. The combustor pressure was controlled by suction at combustor exit. Pressure index ($P{\ast}=P_{abs}/P_{atm}$), where $P_{abs}$ and $P_{atm}$ indicated the absolute pressure and atmosphere pressure, was controlled in the range of $0.7{\sim}1.3$ for each equivalence ratio conditions. The flammable limits of swirl flames were largely influenced by changing combustor pressure and they showed different tendency compared with laminar flames. Emission index showed maximum value near atmospheric condition and decreased with decreasing pressure index for overall equivalence ratio conditions. R.m.s of pressure fluctuations also showed similar tendency with nitric oxide emission. By injecting secondary fuel into flame zone, the flammable limits were extended significantly. Emission index of nitric oxide and r.m.s. of pressure fluctuations were also controlled by injecting secondary fuel. The swirl flames were somewhat lifted by secondary fuel with high momentum, hence low nitric oxide emission. This NOx reduction technology is applicable to industrial furnaces and air conditioning system by adopting secondary fuel injection.

  • In present study, the influence of changing combustor pressure on flame stabilization and nitrogen oxide (NOX) emission in the swirl flame with secondary fuel injection was investigated. The combustor pressure was controlled by suction at combustor exit. Pressure index ($P^*=Pabs/Patm$), where Pabs and Patm indicated the absolute pressure and atmosphere pressure, was controlled in the range of 0.7~1.15 for each equivalence ratio conditions. It could be observed that flame stable region became narrower with decreasing equivalence ratio and pressure index. In this combustion system, stable flames were formed until $P^*=\;0.7$. Emission index decreased with decreasing pressure index for overall equivalence ratio conditions and NOx reduction rates were almost identical for $P^*<1$ regardless of equivalence ratio though EINOx values showed different level with change of equivalence ratio for $P^*{\geq}1$. It is also observed that EINOx decreased with increasing secondary fuel injection ratio. Emission index of nitric oxide was controllable by adjusting the changing combustor pressure and injecting secondary fuel and this NOx reduction technology is applicable to industrial furnaces and air conditioning system.

  • The characteristics of flame dynamics occurring near bluff body was experimentally investigated in a model combustor with V-gutter bluff body. Flashback occurs due to the change of pressure gradient in the combustor, and flashback distance depends on equivalent ratio. Unstable flames can be classified into three types depending on the flashback distance and structure. Re-stabilization takes place as the flame moves downstream. This process is supported by a strong vortex structure behind bluff body.

  • The present study has focused on numerical investigation on the flame structure, flame lift-off and stabilization in the partially premixed turbulent lifted jet flames. Since the lifted jet flames have the partially premixed nature in the flow region between nozzle exit and flame base, level set approach is applied to simulate the partially premixed turbulent lifted jet flames for various fuel jet velocities and co-flow velocities. The flame stabilization mechanism and the flame structure near flame base are presented in detail. The predicted lift-off heights are compared with the measured ones.
