In accordance with the revision of the Enforcement Regulations of the High-Pressure Gas Safety Management Act in February 2021, from August 27, 2021, the operation status of safety devices such as gas leak detection and alarm devices, emergency shut-off devices and flame detectors installed at hydrogen vehicle charging stations can be monitored in real time. It is transmitted and operated by the computer system managed by Korea Gas Safety Corporations. We intend to share the results of statistical analysis of abnormal signals that have occurred along with the results of the monitoring system construction so that they can be used for the safety management of hydrogen refueling stations, and to seek future safety management directions.

Urban public health monitoring in smart cities focuses on the control of conditions and health challenges in urban environments. Considering the rapid spread of diseases and pandemics, it is important for health authorities to trace people carrying the virus. In smart cities, this tracing must be interoperable and intelligent, especially in indoor surfaces characterized by small distances between people. Therefore, to fight pandemics, it is necessary to start with the already-existing digital equipment of the Internet of Things, such as connected objects and smartphones. In this study, the developed system is employed to provide a social IoT network and suggest a strategy which allows reliable traceability without threatening the privacy of users. This IoT-based system allows respecting the social distance between persons sharing public services in smart cities without applying smartphone applications or severe confinement. It also permits a return to normal life in case of viral pandemic and ensures the much-desired balance between economy and health. The present study analyses previous proposed social distance systems then, unlike these studies, suggests an intelligent and distributed IoT based strategy for positioning students. Two scenarios of static and dynamic optimization-based placement of Bluetooth Low Energy devices are proposed and an experimental study shows the contribution and complementarity of the introduced contact tracing strategy with the applications on smartphones.
Recently, there has been an increase in the number of hazardous events, such as fire accidents. Monitoring systems that rely on human resources depend on people; hence, the performance of the system can be degraded when human operators are fatigued or tensed. It is easy to use fire alarm boxes; however, these are frequently activated by external factors such as temperature and humidity. We propose an approach to fire detection using an image processing technique. In this paper, we propose a fire detection method using multichannel information and gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) image features. Multi-channels consist of RGB, YCbCr, and HSV color spaces. The flame color and smoke texture information are used to detect the flames and smoke, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than the previous method in terms of accuracy of fire detection.

This study presents the prediction of NOx and mixing characteristics with several chemical reaction mechanisms of methane in EV burner of double cone. Experimental results are compared with numerical results for validation. Mixing characteristics are analyzed at monitoring points based on the modified unmixedness. The mixing characteristics were improved in a certain case, the lance injection case. In 1-step reaction case, inside of the cone, flame was formed and lots of NOx was generated because the fuel injected from the lance was overestimated. In 2-step reaction case, numerical results showed a good agreement with experimental results in a qualitative manner.
Monitoring of OH chemiluminescence through an optical fiber was demonstrated to be a useful method in detecting self-excited combustion oscillations. OH chemiluminescence intensity detected by the optical fiber showed mostly excellent agreement with those obtained by high speed CCD camera measurements when combustion oscillations were strong. Symptoms of self-excited combustion oscillation were also studied in order to predict the onset of combustion oscillation before it proceeded to a catastrophic failure. For the purpose, we have found and proposed unique measures to tell the onset of self-excited combustion oscillations based on the careful statistics of fluctuating properties in flames, such as pressure or emission of OH radicals.
Bioremediation technologies were applied to experimental microcosms, simulating an oil spill in a lower intertidal area. Three treatments (oil only, oil plus nutrients, and oil plus nutrients and microbial inocula) were applied, and each microcosm was repeatedly filled and eluted with seawater every 12 h to simulate tidal cycles. To minimize washing-out of the inoculum by the tidal cycles, microbial cells were primarily immobilized on diatomaceous earth before they were applied to the oiled sand. Oil degradation was monitored by gravimetric measurements, thin layer chromatography/flame ionization detector (TLC/FID) analysis, and gas chromatography (GC) analysis, and the loss of oil content was normalized to sand mass or nor-hopane. When the data were normalized to sand mass, no consistent differences were detected between nutrient-amended and nutrient/inoculum-amended microcosms, although both differed from the oil-only microcosm in respect of oil removal rate by a factor of 4 to 14. However, the data relative to nor-hopane showed a significant treatment difference between the nutrient-amended and nutrient/inoculum-treated microcosms, especially in the early phase of the treatment. The accelerating effect of inoculum treatment has hardly been reported in studies of oil bioremediation in the Tower intertidal area. The inoculum immobilized on diatomaceous earth seemed to be a very effective formulation for retaining microbial cells in association with the sand. Results of this study also suggest that interpretation of the effectiveness of bioremediation could be dependent on the selection of monitoring methods, and consequently the application of various analytical methods in combination could be a solution to overcome the limitations of oil bioremediation monitoring.
In case of wild fire, early detection of wild fire is the most important factor in minimizing the damages. In this paper, we suggest an effective system that detects wild fire using a panoramic image from a single camera with PAN/TILT head. This enables the system to detect the size and the location of the fire in the early stages. After converting RGB image input to color YCrCb image, the differential image is used to detect changes in movement of the smoke to determine the regions which may be prone to forest fire. Histogram analysis of fire flame is used to determine the possibility of fire in the predetermined regions. In addition, image matching and SURF were used to create the panoramic image. There are many advantages in this system. First of all, it is very economical because this system needs only a single camera and a monitor. Second, it shows the live image of wide view through panoramic image. Third, this system can reduce the quantity of saved data by storing panoramic images.
Background: Benzene is a known occupational and environmental pollutant. Its urinary metabolite trans, trans-muconic acid (tt-MA) has been introduced by some environmental and occupational health regulatory associations as a biological index for the assessment of benzene exposure; however, recently, doubts have been raised about the specificity of tt-MA for low-level benzene exposures. In the present study, we investigated the association between urinary levels of tt-MA and inhalational exposure to benzene in different exposure groups. Methods: Benzene exposure was assessed by personal air sampling. Collected benzene on charcoal tube was extracted by carbon disulfide and determined by a gas chromatograph (gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector). Urinary tt-MA was extracted by a strong anion-exchange column and determined with high-performance liquid chromatography-UV. Results: Urinary levels of tt-MA in intensive benzene exposure groups (chemical workers and police officers) were significantly higher than other groups (urban and rural residents), but its levels in the last two groups with significant different exposure levels (mean = 0.081 ppm and 0.019 ppm, respectively) showed no significant difference (mean = $388{\mu}g/g$ creatinine and $282{\mu}g/g$, respectively; p < 0.05). Before work shift, urine samples of workers and police officers showed a high amount of tt-MA and its levels in rural residents' samples were not zero. Conclusion: Our results suggest that tt-MA may not be a reliable biomarker for monitoring low-level (below 0.5 ppm) benzene exposures.
To enforce the maximum residue limit for residual hexane (0.005 g/kg) in commercially available Korean vegetable oil, convenient and accurate quantification methods were investigated. Using dual surrogate standards, pentane and heptane were dissolved in ethanol, and then added to hexane-tree sunflower oil for setting up the calibration curve. Gas Chromatograph-Flame Ionization Detector with a porous layer open tubular column, indicated good chromatographic separation of hexane from other inhibiting matrix components. The lowest calibration level was $0.5\;{\mu}g/g$, not exceeding a relative standard deviation of 10% (RSD%), and 1.0\;{\mu}g/g$ not exceeding a deviation of 22% RSD% using heptane as an internal standard for the Static headspace analysis by using a headspace auto-sampler and manual injection, respectively. The residual hexane was detected in nine of the samples among 87 vegetable oil samples purchased on the local market.
A diode laser sensor system based on absorption spectroscopy techniques has been developed to measure $CO_2$ concentration and temperature non-intrusively in high temperature combustion environments using a 2.0 ${\mu}m$ DFB(Distributed Feedback) laser. Two optics was fabricated in pig-tail fashion and all optical components were implemented in a single box. The evolution of measurement sensitivity was done using test cell by changing sweep frequency and $CO_2$ concentration. Gas temperature was determined from the ratio of integrated line strengths. Species concentration was determined from the integrated line intensity and the measured temperature. The result show that the system has 2% error in wide operation frequency range and accuracy of $CO_2$ concentration was about 3%. The system was applied to measure temperature and concentration in the combustion region of a premixed $CH_4$ +air triangular flame. The measurement results of gas temperature agreed well with thermocouple results. Many considerations were taken into account to reduce optical noise, etalon effect, beam steering and base line matching problem. The evaluations results and actual combustion measurement demonstrate the practical and applicability for in-situ and real time combustion monitoring in a practical system.
