When large size nozzle with low jet velocity is used, the buoyancy effect arises from the density difference among propane, air, and burnt gas. Flame characteristics in such buoyant jets have been investigated numerically to elucidate the effect of buoyancy on lifted flames. It has been demonstrated that the cold jet has circular cone shape since upwardly injected propane jet decelerates and forms stagnation region. In contrast to the cold flow, the reacting flow with a lifted flame has no stagnation region by the buoyancy force induced from the burnt gas. To further illustrate the buoyancy effect on lifted flames, the reacting flow with buoyancy is compared with non-buoyant reacting flow. Non-buoyant flame is stabilized at much lower height than the buoyant flame. At a certain range of fuel jet velocities and fuel dilutions. an oscillating flame is demonstrated numerically showing that the height of flame base and tip vary during one cycle of oscillation. Under the same condition. non-buoyant flame exhibits only steady lifted flames. This confirms the buoyancy effect on the mechanism of lifted flame oscillation.

The stability of turbulent nonpremixed interacting flames is investigated in terms of nozzle configuration shapes and kind of fuels. Four nozzle arrangements - cross 5, matrix 8, matrix 9 and circle 8 nozzles - are used in the experiment. There are many parameters affecting flame stability in multi-nozzle flames such as nozzle separation distance, fuel flowrates and nozzle configuration etc. Key factors to enhance blowout limit are the nozzle configuration and the existence of center nozzle. Even nozzle exit velocity equal 204 m/s, flame is not extinguished when there is not a center nozzle and s/d=15.3∼27.6 in matrix-8 and circular-8 configurations. At these conditions, recirculation of burnt gas is related with stability augmentation. Fuel mole fraction measurements using laser induced fluorescence reveal lifted flame base is not located at the stoichiometric contour.
An experimental study on the characteristics of stability of propane turbulent nonpremixed jet flames discharged normal to air free-streams with uniform velocity profile is conducted. Experimental observations are focused on the flame shape, the stability considering two kinds of flame, lift-off distance, and the flame length according to velocity ratio. In order to investigate the mixing structure of the flame base at the lower limit, we employ the RMS technique and measure the species concentration by a gas chromatography. In the results of the stability curve and lifted flame, it is fecund that the dependency of nozzle diameter is closely related to the large-scale vortical structure representing counter-rotating vortices pair. Also, the detailed discussion on the phenomenon of blowout due to this large vortical motion, is provided.

The effect of fuel mixing on soot structure with methane, ethane, and propane to ethylene-base counterflow diffusion flames has been investigated by measuring the volume fraction, number density, and particle size of soot by adopting the light extinction/scattering techniques. The experimental result showed that the mixing of ethane and propane in ethylene diffusion flame increased soot volume fraction while the mixing of methane decreased. As compare to the ethylene-base flame, the diameters of soot particles for mixture flames are slightly smaller. While the soot number densities for the mixture flames are much higher. Thus, the increase in the soot volume fraction can be attributed to the appreciably increased soot number density by the fuel mixing.
The effects of configuration of fuel and air tubes on the flame stabilization were experimentally investigated in half-closed combustors. Flame behaviors and stabilities of methane, propane, and DME flames were compared by changing tube diameters and the locations of the fuel and air tubes. It was found that flammability limits are significantly affected by the outlet boundary condition, which disturbs compositions of burned and unburned mixtures near the flame base. And it was found that there exist critical inner tube heights, over which flame stability is determined only by the fuel flow rate. Conclusively, flame stabilization is governed by the flame propagation velocity in an ordinary mixing flow and the non-uniform mixture concentration in the combustion space which is affected by flow recirculation and the combustor configuration. The compositions of $NO_x$ and CO were compared to know basic characteristics of methane, propane, and DME flames.
When the fuel jet velocity is smaller than coflow velocity, the trend of decreasing liftoff height of highly diluted propane lifted flame with coflow velocity is observed experimentally. To investigate the mechanism of decreasing liftoff height with coflow velocity, lifted flames in propane jet has been studied numerically. Using one-step overall reaction mechanism the liftoff heights have been calculated for four cases of coflow velocity. The simulation agrees qualitatively with experimental observation that the liftoff height decreases with coflow velocity. As coflow velocity increases, the streamlines between nozzle and lifted flame diverge in radial direction due to the difference of momentum between coflow jet and fuel jet such that the local flow velocity ahead of lifted flame base decreases resulting in decrease of the liftoff height with coflow velocity.
Characteristics of laminar lifted flames of propane highly-diluted with nitrogen have been investigated at various temperatures of coflow air. At various fuel mole fractions, the base of laminar lifted flames has the structure of tribrachial (or triple) flame. The liftoff heights are correlated well with the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity considering initial temperature at a given coflow velocity. It shows that lifted flames are stabilized on the basis of the balance mechanism between local flow velocity and the propagation speed of tribrachial flame, regardless of the temperature of coflow and fuel mole fraction. Lifted flames exist for a jet velocity even smaller than the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity, and liftoff velocity increases more rapidly than stoichiometric laminar burning velocity as coflow temperature increases. These can be attributed to the buoyancy effect due to the density difference.
The effect of electric fields on the stability of non-premixed laminar lifted flame in coflow jets has been investigated by applying high voltage alternative current (AC) to the nozzle of propane fuel. The stable lifted flame which exist in far field of jets, the liftoff height was not effected by applied voltage. This implies that the cold jet between the nozzle and flame base can be analyzed with the previous cold jet theory. Flame liftoff and reattachment velocities were also measured as function of applied voltage and frequency. The fuel jet velocity at flame liftoff and reattachment increased with increasing voltage, implying that the range of flame srability can be extended with the AC charging. However the liftoff velocity increased with frequency of AC charging on nozzle, whereas the reattachment velocity decreases with frequency. The liftoff and reattachment velocities were correlated linearly with voltage considering the effects of frequency.
Pyrophosphoric lactone modified polyester(PATT) that contains two phosphorous functional groups in one unit base resin structure was synthesized to prepare a non-toxic reactive flame retardant coatings. Then the PATT was cured at room temperature with isocyanate, Desmodur IL, to get a two-component polyurethane flame retardant coatings(PIPUC). Comparing the physical properties of the films of PIPUC with the film of non-flame retardant coatings, there was no degradation observed in physical properties by the introduction of a flame-retarding component into the resin. We found that the char lengths measured by $45^{\circ}$Meckel burner method were $3.1{\sim}4.4cm$ and LOI values recorded $27{\sim}30%$. These results indicate that the coatings prepared in this study is good flame retardant one. The surface structure of coatings investigated with SEM does not show any defects and phase separation.
