CV흑연주철(黑鉛鑄鐵)의 응고특성(凝固特性)에 관한 연구(硏究) (A Study on the Solidification Characteristics of CV Graphite Cast Iron)

  • Many researchers have studied the eutectic solidification of CV Graphite Cast Iron qualitatively. However quantative studies have not been done. The type of eutectic solidification of CV Graphite Cast Iron treated with CG Alloy (Fe-Si-Mg-5Ti-Ca-Ce) was studied quantitatively through M.D.E. value (Mushy Degree of Eutectic Solidification) = $t_2/t_1)$, where $t_1$ is the difference of the eutectic solidification starting time between surface and center part of the casting sample, and $t_2$ is the time of eutectic solidification of the center part. Following results were obtained. (1) The M.D.E. value of CV graphite cast iron lies between that of spheroidal graphite and that of flake graphite cast iron but is closer to that of Flake graphite cast iron. (2) The M.D.E. value of CV graphite cast iron depends upon CV ratio. (3) The time required for eutectic solidification increases as graphite form is changed from Flake, CV. to spheroidal graphite. (4) The M.D.E. value increases as cooling rate increases.

동계소결 마찰재의 마찰마모에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Friction and Wear of Bronze Sintered Friction Materials)

  • The effect of bronze sintered friction materials on frictional and mechanical properties is studied with the content(8~18 wt,%) and shapes (flake and irregular) of graphite that is used as solid lubricants to meet diverse characteristics such as low coefficient of friction, low wear rate and high bending strength. The content and shapes of graphite are optimized by statistical experiments. Friction test was carried out measure friction coefficient, temperature dependence and wear rate. As a result of experiments, the density, hardness and bending strength with a shape of flake graphite are lower and decrease rapidly than that of Irregular, as the content of graphite increases up to 18 wt% Aftei friction test, coefficient of friction is 0.3~0 4 and wear rate is $0.32{\sim}2.98{\times}10^{-7}cm^3/kg{\cdot}m$. When the content of graphite increases, coefficient of friction increases In a shape of flake graphite and decreases in a shape of irregular graphite.

  • CV graphite cast iron has been studied and generally known to have properties close to the average values of those between flake and spheroidal graphite cast iron. However, the thermal diffusivity of CV graphite cast iron is much larger than that of the average value of those between flake and spheroidal graphite cast iron. In this study, an easy production method of CV graphite cast iron with small additions of a Al-Cu which is known as the element of the graphitization was investigated. The effects of hold time and of Al-Cu additions after the treatments with spheroidizer (Fe-Si-Mg alloy) were also investigated. Increasing the additions of a Al-Cu alloy, the holding time to form a CV graphite cast iron was decreasing. Tensile strength and thermal diffusivity (flash method) were measured in order to find the changes of the mechanical properties and the physical properties. Spheroidal, CV, and flake graphite cast iron have tensile strengths 46.44, 38.29, and $27.29\;kg/mm^2$ and thermal diffusivities $3.95{\times}10^{-6,}$ $8.41{\times}10^{-6}$, $8.81{\times}10^{-6}m^2/sec$, respectively at room temperature.

  • This study aims to establish the fundamental basis for the design of materials used in high-speed trains, by using a lab-scale dynamometer to evaluate the characteristic behavior of metallic sintered friction materials in relation to the shape of graphite. The test results clearly demonstrate that when flake graphite and granular graphite are added equivalently, the average coefficient of friction is much lower, and it is less influenced by speed variation; moreover, friction wear is observed to be insignificantly low. Adding flake graphite increases the coefficient of friction, which leads to higher friction wear. In addition, the roughness of the disc surface was equivalent regardless of the shape of the graphite.

  • It is well known that the graphite flakes become spherulite, when a suitable amount of nodulizing element, such as cerium or magnesium, is added to the cast iron. The change of graphite from flake to nodular shape improves not only the tensile strength but the ductility as well. However, the mechanism of spheroidization of graphite in cast iron has not yet been clearly understood, and various theories proposed by a number of investigators were such that it may be due to the special nucleation effect, prevention of flake formation by the adsorption of magnesium vapour on the graphite surface or file surface free energy difference between plain graphite and magnesium-adsorbed graphite. Regardless of the speculations of spheroidizing mechanism of the graphite in the cast iron, the final phenomenon comes to the conclusion that it may be due to the lack of wettability between graphite and iron matrix. In order to collaborate this fact through an experimental method, the authors have constructed a vacuum arc furnace for the wettability measurement as its first step. Our study and experiments were then directed to the comparison of the wettability between iron and graphite on the two cases (namely, the one where magnesium was preliminarily coated on the graphite surface and the other not coated), by means of contact angle measurements. The result was such that a significant difference of the contact angles has been shown between the above two cases. indicating the spheroidization of graphite which might have resulted from the lack of wettability between magnesium-adsorbed graphite and iron matrix.

  • The effect of the microstructure of gray cast iron on friction properties was investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Cast iron samples used in this investigation were obtained from "step block" castings, which were designed to produce microstructure with different graphite flake morphologies from different cooling rate and solidification rate. Results of this work showed that the gray cast iron disks with long graphite flakes showed less fading. The rotors containing smaller amounts of ferrite showed higher friction coefficient and better fade resistance than others.an others.

Performance of modified graphite as anode material for lithium-ion secondary battery

  • Two different types of graphite, such as flake graphite (FG) and spherical graphite (SG), were used as anode materials for a lithium-ion secondary battery in order to investigate their electrochemical performance. The FG particles were prepared by pulverizing natural graphite with a planetary mill. The SG particles were treated by immersing them in acid solutions or mixing them with various carbon additives. With a longer milling time, the particle size of the FG decreased. Since smaller particles allow more exposure of the edge planes toward the electrolyte, it could be possible for the FG anodes with longer milling time to deliver high reversible capacity; however, their initial efficiency was found to have decreased. The initial efficiency of SG anodes with acid treatments was about 90%, showing an over 20% higher value than that of FG anodes. With acid treatment, the discharge rate capability and the initial efficiency improved slightly. The electrochemical properties of the SG anodes improved slightly with carbon additives such as acetylene black (AB), Super P, Ketjen black, and carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, the cyclability was much improved due to the effect of the conductive bridge made by carbon additives such as AB and Super P.

고 망간 편상흑연주철에서 냉각속도별 공정반응 분석 (Analysis of Eutectic Reaction as a Function of Cooling Rate in High Manganese Flake Graphite Cast Irons)

  • The effects of Mn content and cooling rate on the eutectic reaction of flake graphite cast irons were studied by a combined analysis of macro/micro-structure and cooling curve data. The correlation between the eutectic reaction parameter and macro/microstructure was systematically investigated. Two sets of chemical compositions with different Mn contents were designed to cast. Three types of molds for cylindrical specimens with different diameters were prepared to analyze the cooling rate effect. The difference between undercooling temperature and cementite eutectic temperature (${\Delta}T_1=T_U-T_{E,C}$), which is decreased by increasing the Mn content or increasing the cooling rate, is considered to be a suitable eutectic reaction parameter for predicting graphite morphology. According to the criterion, A-type graphite is mainly suggested to form for ${\Delta}T_1$ over $20^{\circ}C$, and D-type graphite is mainly suggested to form for ${\Delta}T_1$ below $0^{\circ}C$. Eutectic reaction time (${\Delta}T$), which is increased by increasing the Mn content and decreased by increasing the cooling rate, is regarded as a suitable eutectic reaction parameter for predicting eutectic cell size. Eutectic cell size is found to decrease in proportion to the decrease of ${\Delta}T$.

  • Influence of frictional and mechanical properties was studied with the content(8-18 wt.%) and shapes(flake of irregular) of graphite that was used as lubricant components of copper-based sintered materials. The density, hardness and bending strength of friction materials with the shape of flake graphite were lower and decreased rapidly than that of irregular, as the content of graphite increases up to 18 wt.%. In friction test, wear rate was about 2.0-$2.5{\times}10^{-7}\textrm{cm}^3$/kgf.m and coefficient of friction was 0.30-0.37, independent on graphite content and shape. As the temperature of friction materials increased, wear rate decreased rapidly because oxides such as $Cu_2O$ and $SnO_2$ in the surface of friction material were formed.
