Rice world production is affected due to the growing impact of diseases such as bacterial panicle blight, produced by Burkholderia glumae. The pathogen-induced symptoms include seedling rot, grain rot and leafsheath browning in rice plants. It is currently recognized the entrance of this pathogen to the plant, from infected seeds and from environmental sources of the microorganism. However, it is still not fully elucidated the dynamics and permanence of the pathogen in the plant, from its entry until the development of disease symptoms in seedlings or panicles. In this work it was evaluated the infection of B. glumae rice plants, starting from inoculated seeds and substrates, and its subsequent monitoring after infection. Various organs of the plant during the vegetative stage and until the beginning of the reproductive stage, were evaluated. In both inoculation models, the bacteria was maintained in the plant as an endophyte between $1{\times}10^1$ and $1{\times}10^5cfu$ of B. $glumae.g^{-1}$ of plant throughout the vegetative stage. An increase of bacterial population towards initiation of the panicle was observed, and in the maturity of the grain, an endophyte population was identified in the flag leaf at $1{\times}10^6cfu$ of B. $glumae.g^{-1}$ fresh weight of rice plant, conducting towards the symptoms of bacterial panicle blight. The results found, suggest that B. glumae in rice plants developed from infected seeds or from the substrate, can colonize seedlings, establishing and maintaining a bacterial population over time, using rice plants as habitat to survive endophyticly until formation of bacterial panicle blight symptoms.
This experiment was carried out to examine the effect of water stress at anthesis on the grain maturation and to interpret the immediate and resulting growth response in barley. The dry weight of root, stem, internode, flag leaf and grain under water stress was remarkably more reduced than that under no-water stress, respectively. Water stressed plants had heavier grain dry weight during 7.14 days after water stress than that under no-water stress, but this early response was reversed significantly in the later period. The relative turgidity of organs except grain under water stress was severely lowered than that under no-water stress. The net photosynthsis by rewatering after water stress had been kept at the lower level than that under no-water stress ti1l the late maturation.
Gamadi, a native rice cultivar from Nepal in which the panicle remains enclosed within its flag leaf sheath upto maturity, was crossed with different genetic marker testers of 12 linkage groups in order to analyze its linkage relationship. The results obtained from the experiment were summarized as follows: Normal segregations of all the genetic marker genes used in this experiment viz Cl, wx and Pla of linkage group I, Pn, Rd and Pub of linkage group III, and lg, g, Ps, gh, Hla, la, nl, bl, be and gl of linkage groups II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII respectively confirmed the previous results, and also strongly indicated that the genetic constituent of the Gamadi and marker testers is same. 'Gamadiness' (the panicle enclosing character) was controlled by two complementary dominant genes with the segregation ratio of 9 Gamadi to 7 normal panicle-exserting types. These genes have been temporarily proposed as G-a and G-b for gamadiness. G-a gene was found to be linked with the neckleaf gene (nl) of linkage group Ⅸ with the crossover value of 0.3733$\pm$0.027. G-b gene appeared to be associated with the brittle culm gene (bc) of the linkage group XI with the crossover value of 0.2725$\pm$0.061.TEX>0.061.
Heat stress during the ripening stage reduces the yield and quality of rice. Considering the adverse effects of global warming, it is necessary to breed heat stress tolerant rice cultivars and analyze their stress tolerance characteristics. We investigated the ripening characteristics and antioxidant enzyme activity of Ilmi under heat stress condition during the ripening stage. Ripening rate, 1000 brown grain weight, and rice quality of Ilmi were not significantly changed by heat stress during the ripening stage. Leaf chlorophyll, chlorophyll a/b ratio, and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents of Ilmi leaves were also less changed than those of Ilpum. These results strongly suggested that Ilmi has heat tolerance characteristics during the ripening stage. Analysis of antioxidant enzyme activity of Ilmi revealed that peroxidase (POX) activity was significantly higher than that of Ilpum, and showed a significant correlation with the change in chlorophyll a/b ratio and hydrogen peroxide content of flag leaves of Ilmi. These data suggest that the high POX enzyme activity of Ilmi could be considered one of its major heat tolerance characteristics.
Rice varieties showing different degree of resistance were compared with their yield losses due to the damage of sheath blight disease in field condition through 1985 to 1986. Gayabyeo showed the lowest value of disease severity among 5 varieties tested in 1985 and 8 in 1986. and Taebaekbyeo, Kwanakbyeo and Labelle showed higher value of disease severity under the condition of artificial or natural disease inoculation. Grain yield of Gayabyeo, a moderate resistant rice variety, was reduced by 0.3 to 5% in the rate due to sheath blight disease damage and Taebaekbyeo. a susceptible variety. showed the highest in the rate of yield loss, 6.8 to 25.8 %. The matured grain rate and 1000-grain weight of the matured tiller were decreased when the developing disease lesion reached to the flag leaf, and then panicle weight was decreased more than 25 % compared with panicle of healthy culm. In conclusion, Gayabyeo showed the lower rate of yield loss because of slow development of disease to the upper leaves after initial disease occurence on the lower parts of rice plants.

Tilletia laevis Kuhn (syn. Tilletia foetida (Wallr.) Liro.) causes wheat common bunt, which is one of the most devastating plant diseases in the world. Common bunt can result in a reduction of 80% or even a total loss of wheat production. In this study, the characteristics of T. laevis infection in compatible wheat plants were defined based on the combination of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscopy. We found T. laevis could lead to the abnormal growth of wheat tissues and cells, such as leakage of chloroplasts, deformities, disordered arrangements of mesophyll cells and also thickening of the cell wall of mesophyll cells in leaf tissue. What's more, T. laevis teliospores were found in the roots, stems, flag leaves, and glumes of infected wheat plants instead of just in the ovaries, as previously reported. The abnormal characteristics caused by T. laevis may be used for early detection of this pathogen instead of molecular markers in addition to providing theoretical insights into T. laevis and wheat interactions for breeding of common bunt resistance.
Two near-isogenic lines with dark and pale green leaves, derived from the F$\_$7/ generation of wxl26 cross were compared on photosynthetic capacity, growth parameters, grain yield and yield-related characters. Dark green-leaved lines contained much greater content of chlorophyll a and b than pale green-leaved ones, but chlorophyll a to b ratio showed no difference between them. The photosynthetic nte per unit leaf area was higher in dark green-leaved lines than in pale green-leaved ones in the flag leaves at heading stage, but that per unit chlorophyll content showed reversed result. The crop growth rate from transplanting to heading was consistantly higher in the dark green-leaved lines, resulting from their greater net assimilation rate. Dark green-leaved lines produced greater number of panicles and spikelets per hill, out yielding pale green-leaved lines, but ripened grain ratio and 1000-grain weight showed no differences between those lines.

The experiment aim to breed an early-maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). It was conducted at the Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Cheonan, Korea, from 2022 to 2023. The new variety named "Oasis" is a diploid with green leaves and has a semi-erect growth habit in late fall, and an erect growth habit in early spring. With a heading date of May 10, Oasis is categorized as an early-maturing variety. Compared with the "Florida80" as a control variety, Oasis's flag leaf was 1 mm wider and 2 cm shorter, while the plant length was 7.8 cm longer. Additionally, the ear of Oasis was 1.2 cm longer than that of Florida80, and it showed lodging resistance. The dry matter yield of Oasis (8,805 kg/ha) was higher than that of Florida80. The total digestible nutrient and crude protein contents of Oasis were 64.5%, and 9.3%, respectively, which were 1.1% and 0.6% higher than those of Florida80, respectively. The neutral and acid detergent fiber contents in Oasis were 54.2% and 30.8%, respectively, which was 1.9% and 1.4% lower than those of Florida80, respectively. These results indicate that Oasis has good dry matter yield in the most of region and especially, middle and northern region of South Korea.
This experiment was conducted at the Kyungpook National University Agriculture college farm during 1988 to determine the effect of tiller no. Per hill on growth and competitive response of the rice plant. The results obtained were summarized as follows : As tiller no. Per hill, Rice yield increased and also yield component such as 1000-grain weight and ripening ratio were increased up to at 10 tiller no. Per hill but they decreased at 13 tiller no. Per hill in used four rice varieties. Culm length of four rice varieties was shortest at one tiller no. Per hill however as tiller no. Per hill increased culm length significantly decreased in all rice varieties. Flag leaf length was highest at one tiller no. Per hill in all varieties while flag leaf length decreased with increased tiller no. Per hill. Highest harvest index exhibited at 13 tiller no. Per hill in all varieties and also showed that Chil seongbyeo and Samgang byeo of Tongil variety were higher harvest index compared to Nagdongbyeo and Palgongbyeo of Japonica Variety. Tiller no. Per hill did not significantly affect the heading date except by delayed heading date on Chilseong and Samgangbyeo at one tiller no. Per hill. The correlation coefficients of competitive index and ripening ratio and harvest index were 0.60 and 0.77 respectively while panicle length was 0.43 and grain weight was 029.
The effects of foliar application of phosphate was investigated in the light of plant physiological point of view. The phosphate applied on the foliar both in meiosis and heading time was penetrated considerably into the rice. The amount of P absorbed by foliar application at high temperature was higher than that at low temperature but still considerable amount of P was absorbed at low temperature. The phosphate applied on younger flag leaf was absorbed more vigorously than the second and third leaves. The absorbed P on leaf was translocated to the panicle, especially on the brown rice starch, then moved to another panicle wherever the phosphate was needed. The major fraction of absorbed P under high temperature condition was T.C.A. soluble-Ba insoluble phosphate of mainly phytic form but Ba soluble-EtOH insoluble fraction, sugar phosphate ester, was identified as dominant P under low temperature condition.
